A new year brings a new series here on the OST Party! This week's film, the 1999 sci-fi rom-com Blast from the Past, marks the finale of our neo-swing trilogy, and also the beginning of our series on the films of Brendan Fraser. Blast from the Past, as Libby's husband Ian pointed out, is like if you crossed Encino Man with The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And the soundtrack reflects that weird clash of tones. You've got the square 60s tunes of Perry Como, the neo-swing revival of The Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers, and modern 90s rock in acts like Everclear, Dishwalla and Sonichrome. The whole thing is a fascinating time capsule of where we were in the late-90s, and how that era is well and truly behind us. Time marches on, and so do we! Welcome to the stunning conclusion of this two-part series about the end of time! This episode focuses on four truths about the end times that matter far more than any particular perspective on how God will fulfill his eschatological promises. In the process of exploring these four truths, the dynamic duo considers how different views of the millennium have developed and changed throughout Christian history. In the end, your intrepid cohosts reveal their own views about the end of time, and they spend some time considering how the pains of this past year have awakened a new yearning within them for the return of Jesus. Warning to parents: Garrick kicks off this episode by attempting to kill a phoenix with a wooden knife. Please do not attempt this at home. Garrick is a trained professional who almost has a Ph.D. Due to Garrick’s gratuitous act of attempted violence in the early moments of the episode, Timothy recommends that parents cover young children's eyes while listening to this portion of the program, unless your children are driving a vehicle or operating heavy machinery while listening to the podcast in which case you're probably not the type of parent who cares about protecting your children from violent images anyway. Thankfully, Garrick's felonious efforts fail, and the episode improves from that point forward. Also, “Murder Phoenix” would be the perfect name for a death metal band. The new cover art for this season was created by Dani Wallace (daniwallace.myportfolio.com). In This Episode Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He teaches in the areas of family ministry and applied apologetics. He has authored or edited more than a dozen books, including Why Should I Trust the Bible?, The God Who Goes Before You, Perspectives on Family Ministry, and Christian History Made Easy. Follow Dr. Jones at @DrTimothyPJones. Garrick Bailey is a Ph.D. student in systematic theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, studying Herman Bavinck and Roman Catholicism under the supervision of Gregg Allison. The Revelation of Jesus Christ: The ancient Greek word translated Revelation is apokalupsis (apocalypse). The word simply means “a revealing, an unveiling.” Merryam-Webster Dictionary gives 2 meanings to the word The expectation of an imminent cosmic cataclysm in which God destroys the ruling powers of evil and raises the righteous to life in a messianic kingdom A great disaster (Collins) A cataclysmic event, the sudden and violent end of the world. This said the meaning of this word has 2 opposites. For Christians is a great thing, for the world is a catastrophe. History can be divided into "ages" (aeons), which are time periods each with certain commonalities. One age comes to an end and a new age or world to come begins. The Apocalypse does not deal with the "end of time" but rather with the end of a certain period, the end of life as it is now, and the beginning of a new period. So we can say for certain that we are living “Apocalyptic times”. CNET (Article March 16, 2020): Need a playlist for a coronavirus outbreak that would've seemed inconceivable just a month ago? Alternative rock band R.E.M.'s 1987 hit, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), might just be on that soundtrack. The buzzy hit has shown up in the top songs list on iTunes. Today a Google search under "Covid-19" comes up with 13 billion hits. People have been in isolation and quarantine for weeks. The economic impact of this coronavirus outbreak is just incalculable. No shopping, limited production, little or no travelling (business or pleasure), workplaces shutting down, possibly for ever, markets crashing, profit margins destroyed, health facilities strained to breaking point. Of course, the way we live our lives, cramped together in open offices, trains, buses, factories, planes, classrooms, favours the spread of the virus enormously. The virus is not out to get us as such – we are merely a convenient part of its life cycle. A handy link in its chain, because we frequently touch the same public surfaces, and then touch our faces. Pretty soon, there is unlikely to be any country in the world that remains unaffected. Disruption on this global type of scale has never happened before for more than a day or two. This looks set to carry on for weeks, if not months. The world economy could go into a tailspin. We just don't know. So what do we do? Stay calm. Panic won't help anyone. Is this related to the Bible book of Revelation. Is it described there as a percursor to the end-times? The answer is yes and I will show you how.

On the Stuff You Should Know podcast about Baby Boomers, the hosts (both Gen X-ers) pointed out that generations are often characterized by events that shake their collective innocence (e.g. 9-11, JFK, Challenger) They then suggested generations might as well be characterized by the technology that unites them. Boomers were the first generation to grow up with TV. Gen X was the first generation to grow up with video and videogames. Computers, too. And Millennials grew up with more ubiquitous computers and the spread of the internet. Generation Z is growing up with smartphones. So…we somehow define our humanity by the technology at hand. Probably cavemen were like, “Yeah, our young ones are the Fire Generation. They’ll never what it was like for us before we got that life changing Fire stuff.” Probably the Fire Generation and the House Building Generation got together and sang songs at each other right over the head of the lone representative of the farming generation, who declared that all this generational thinking is bullshit. It's time again for our annual Thanksgiving show! That means all feedback this week, all from PaleoPosse who have been kind enough to give us a bit of their hard-earned cash to help us keep producing this podcast for y'all.    00:00:00 - Our first PaleoPOW of the week comes from Joshua W., who is worried that microbes might be out there causing mass extinctions. We do our best to comfort him with cold hard science, so maybe not actually that comforting after all.   00:12:35 - One form of comfort is having a drink with your friends, so let's try that. This segment is actually brought to us by Clay the Human, who has started a recurring donation specifically to support the drinking segment. Thanks, Clay! Patrick sups some fine Basil Hayden bourbon, and gets a bit defensive about his use of an ice cube. Ryan, having recently returned from Sweden, has a sampling of various liquors of which Charlie suggests one of the aquavits. He drinks out of it from a shotglass sent in to our mailing address by superfan and donor Morgan M. Skol, Morgan! Since it was in a tiny airplane bottle, a beer is in order. Since Thanksgiving is the biggest meal of the year, Ryan has the biggest beer in his fridge a 5 Monks Quintupel Ale by Avery coming in at a whopping 19.39%. Charlie has an Emissary Imperial Stout in his Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association mug, because he likes some fish with his beer.    00:28:17  - Clay the Human also had a question basically wanting us to discuss how on Earth we're going to continue surviving as a species... on Earth. We each have our own takes, leading Charlie to get philosophical about things. No great shock. We end with a voicemail from David who wants to wish up a happy Thanksgiving and gives us a truly wonderful gift.      Don't forget to check out our Winter Solstice Gift Guide for 2014!
