“You know the best advice I ever got? If you're up there on stage, hopin' on a spot, if someone gets in your way, step on ‘em. If you're the only one left standin' there, they hire you.” It's The SHOWGIRLS Shindig this week on The Blind Rage Podcast! Before Tony and I dive into Paul Verhoeven's 1995 enduring cult classic, we examine YOU DON'T NOMI, the documentary which coincided with the 25th anniversary of the film. I can honestly say, as a longtime fan of SHOWGIRLS, this episode was a blast to record. Hope you have just as much fun taking this journey with us. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blindragepod/message

We wrap up Verhoeven Month and our coverage of Showgirls! We take a new approach to how we fix this movie to bring it more in line with how one would pitch an actual film. Joe describes his one and only experience in a strip club, Jack gives us a closer look at screenwriter Joe Eszterhas and his Fleetwood-Mac-esque 90's love life (note: don't take relationship advice from psychics), we briefly touch on some more of Paul Verhoeven's weirdness as we further discuss the documentary You Don't Nomi, Jack delves into Hollywood sleaze and scandal as he describes Girl 27, and we finally present our idea for how to fix this movie and prevent it from winning Worst Picture at the 1995 Razzie Awards. Put on your best Versace, heat up some brown rice and vegetables, and join us for this surprisingly unsexy finale. CW: Sexual assault, misogyny, description of a male strip club, Jack jokes about being hit by a bus Podcast plugged in this episode: Doom Generation (@DoomGenPod on Twitter) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/derazzled/support
Peaches Christ steps back Behind The Rope. We have one word - SHOWGIRLS. Yes, that classic mess of a movie or classic brilliant masterpiece, depending upon which side of the fence you fall. Wait, before we get to that and “You Don't Nomi”, the documentary that analyzes the making of Showgirls, the movie itself, the public's reaction, and how it remains a cult classic all these years later, Peaches chats more with us about her life and career that has spanned several decades on the San Francisco, and world, drag scene. Peaches has been producing full blown Midnight Movie drag extravaganzas for years, one of which was Showgirls. The other of which is Purple Rain. Yes, we have yet another Prince fan in the house to discuss one of the biggest musical geniuses of our, or any, generation. We also discuss Peaches' “Spin The Bottle”, a drag-umentary send up of Madonna's “Truth or Dare” chronicling life behind the scenes at Midnight Movie Mass. Speaking of Madonna, Peaches analyzes current day Madonna, her “interesting” social media behavior, and whether she has “lost her way”. On the subject of train wrecks like Showgirls that we just cannot look away from, Peaches chats our favorite subject, Reality TV and all its glory. In other current event news, Peaches discusses, yes we are on an Elizabeth Berkley kick, the just released Saved By The Bell Reboot. Finally, we talk about other “so bad they are good” movies such as Grease 2 and Xanadu, to name a few. Tune in now as our two part sit down with the one and only Peaches Christ continues and comes to a conclusion. @thepeacheschrist @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: HIGHLAND TITLES - www.highlandtitles.com (Use Code VELVET for 15% Off Entire Site. I tried to watch SOME things on Mubi, and I go through them here! Content note: I briefly mention themes of sexual violence and child sexual abuse while talking about You Don't Nomi, Petit Maman and The Trouble With Being Born. I don't go into any detail or describe the scenes, but I understand these are sensitive topics you might want to avoid completely.Announcement Sound 5 via SergeQuadrado on Pixabay. Hosted on Acast. There are some AWESOME Vegas movies out there. Classics like "Casino", "Oceans Eleven" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". There are also some TERRIBLE Vegas movies out there...like "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone", "3000 Miles To Graceland" and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2". I think it's fair to say that the film we're discussing in this episode falls somewhere in the middle. Considered to be one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, Showgirls (written by Joe Eszterhas, directed by Paul Veerhoven, and starring Elizabeth Berkley) has morphed into a huge cult classic. Thanks to a steady stream of nudity & gratuitous sex, the film was given an NC-17 rating and to this day, remains the only film with that rating to have had wide release in US movie theaters. And although Showgirls wasn't based on a true story, Eszterhas and Veerhoven claimed they did "extensive interviews" with people in the Vegas entertainment community to make the portrayal of the showgirl world as accurate as possible. So, did they get it right? We're about to find out. My guest for this episode, making her second appearance on the podcast, is Dani Elizabeth - a legit Showgirl and former cast member of the legendary Vegas shows, "Jubilee" and "Crazy Girls". Dani shared the story of the first time she saw Showgirls and how it almost led to a career change, we dove into the film with some character analysis & theories on why people watch the film over and over again, and we compared Dani's "showgirl life" to Nomi Malone's. If you want to dive further into the world of Showgirls - and really, who wouldn't? - check out the documentary You Don't Nomi directed by Jeffrey McHale (available for sale & rent on your favorite streaming service). __________________________________________________________________________ Become a Jeff Does Vegas Insider today for only $5 USD/month & enjoy all kinds of cool perks like early access to new episodes, commercial-free versions of EVERY episode, invites to exclusive live streams & videos, insider-only virtual hangouts and even real-life in-person hangouts IN Las Vegas! Peaches Christ (aka Joshua Grannell) is a filmmaker and cult leader living in San Francisco. Her infamous movie events at the Castro Theatre regularly draw over 1,000 attendees to each new production before they tour. Events have featured special guest stars John Waters, Cloris Leachman, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell, Linda Blair, Bruce Campbell, Apollonia, Barry Bostwick, Pam Grier, and more. Peaches is the alter- ego of Joshua Grannell, the writer and director of the feature film All About Evil. The award-winning dark comedy gore film stars Natasha Lyonne, Thomas Dekker, Cassandra Peterson, Mink Stole, and Peaches Christ herself. Peaches Christ has been featured in the films Milk, I Am Divine, Diary Of A Teenage Girl, Mansfield 66/67, Tura!, Scream Queen: My Nightmare On Elm Street, You Don't Nomi, and more. All About Evil is a wild ride that's as horrific as it is hilarious. It's been called “a riotous experience” (Horror News), “clearly ahead of its time” (Geekscape) and “made for lovers of horror by someone who loves the genre” (Daily Dead). Now the “demented, outrageous and hysterical” (PopOptiq) debut feature from writer/director Joshua Grannell can finally be experienced by audiences everywhere: When a mousy librarian (Natasha Lyonne of RUSSIAN DOLL) takes over her late father's struggling movie theater, a series of grisly murders caught on camera will transform her into the new queen of indie splatter cinema. Thomas Dekker (TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES), Cassandra Peterson (ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK), Noah Segan (DEADGIRL), Mink Stole (FEMALE TROUBLE) and drag legend Peaches Christ co-star in this “huge fun nod to forgotten horror and exploitation via loads of blood and black humor” (Yell! Magazine) produced by Darren Stein (JAWBREAKER).You can see All About Evil now streaming on Shudder.
We end our year with a bang going deeper on Showgirls. Join us as we do extra credit and watch You Don't Nomi and try to figure out if this movie was better than our first impressions. Zack spends a lot of time looking at the history and physical demands of being a showgirl. Zack spends too much time looking into bananas strip club laws around the country. Zack spends way too much time looking up current pubic barbering trends and the risks associated with them. We talk about the sad ending of both the showgirl show, and the Cheetah dancing lounge. We also do the math and figure out how many human fingers Nomi could have been carrying in that gross suitcase.
The guys review You Don't Nomi, a film that examines the infamous flop Showgirls with a generous critical eye. Might as well have been called Why is This a Thing: The Movie.

Thank you for checking out our latest episode of The Film Scribes Podcast. This week the scribes on deck Rich Heimlich (/comment), Stephen Silver (Splice Today, Philly Voice) and Dan Tabor (Phawker, Cinapse.co) are remote and reviewing Spike Lee's latest Da 5 Bloods, Jude Apatow's latest The King of Staten Island and the cheeky Showgirls doc, You Don't Nomi. After the review we do a quick, or not really that quick, discussion on the Gone with Wind debacle while also discussing life in quarantine. As always any feedback or questions can be sent to Filmscribes@philafcc.org to be discussed on a future show.
YOU DON'T NOMI is a loving deconstruction of the infamous film blunder, SHOWGIRLS.
And so it came to pass that there was another episode. This week, El'Ahrai and John review "The King of Staten Island" and "You Don't Nomi"! But wait, there's more! We also have an interview with "Becky" directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion! So, y'know, that's a thing. I need you to say the things I can't say, and you need me to do the things you can't do.

We're nearing the anniversary of the release of one of my favorite films ever made, Showgirls, which came out on September 22, 1995. So this week we're heading into the Sewers of Paris vault for a listen back to my 2015 conversation with one of the actors in that movie, Patrick Bristow. He played the terrifying choreographer who hollers THRUST IT at Elizabeth Berkeley. He also played the wigmaster on Seinfeld, Larry David's dance teacher on Curb Your Enthusiasm, and the bubbly Peter on Ellen. He shared some fascinating behind the scenes stories about the making of all those movies and shows, as well as his own revelations about learning to set aside the need to fit in.And hey, if you're going to be in Seattle on September 27, I hope you'll join me for a screening of a new documentary about Showgirls entitled You Don't Nomi. I appear in the doc as an expert on Showgirls — which I can hardly believe myself — and I'll be present at the screening to introduce it and answer questions. It's happening at Northwest Film Forum on September 27.Also, a quick heads-up that I'll be doing a very special livestream this Saturday, September 7. A team of drag artists is going to put me into drag, live on camera. Join me along with Arson Nicki, Fraya Love, and Londyn Bradshaw to catch a glimpse of a side of me that nobody, including me, has ever seen. Head over to https://youtu.be/wh2Z1pccCxc to watch, and to set a reminder for when we go live. And just a reminder that right now we're running a Kickstarter campaign for Queens of Adventure, a comedy storytelling podcast where Drag Queens play Dungeons & Dragons. We're raising money to record a dozen hours of new adventures with local drag artists and D&D shows in the midwest, and you can get some gorgeous gay rewards if you back the show. We just added new reward tiers and lowered the price on others, and the campaign ends on September 14.
