Amygdala gives us a glimpse into the world of drag, from how she manages to make it work on a budget and what the night industry COULD do to make it easier.
LGBTQ rights in North Carolina are under attack, but activists and organizers across the state are standing up to hate. In this conversation, Laura brings together featured guests in our award-winning series, “The Roots of the January 6th Insurrection” to hear their stories now leading up to the 2024 election. She first investigated LGBTQ backlash in the state in 2023, one year after a deadly power grid attack in Moore County. It coincided with a “Downtown Divas” drag show that had been harassed for months by anti-LGBTQ leaders. Now nearly two years after the attack, there are still no arrests. Plus, legislators and local leaders have introduced bans on books and gender affirming care for minors. On the heels of 2024 Durham Pride, we bring you this roundtable discussion featuring House of Coxx drag artists Stormie Daie and Naomi Dix; Dix is this year's grand marshall. Also featured are PFLAG Southern Pines founders Kristen Parker and Erica Street, and Street's daughter, Alex Lafferty, a young trans activist, artist and composer. How are they creating safety and building community in this moment? These audio exclusives are made possible thanks to our member supporters. Flamy Grant is the first drag artist ever to top the iTunes Christian charts, with her soulful songs about growing up queer in the Bible Belt of the US and navigating faith, Scripture, gender and sexuality with honesty. [there would ordinarily be an image here but Libsyn is a bit ropey today] We caught up with Flamy at Greenbelt festival and talked about God, the Bible, personal authenticity and why she still makes Christian-friendly music. It's a lot of fun, you should listen. The episode was recorded out in the wild, so expect some background noise and for us to be quieter than Flamy, because THIS ISN'T ABOUT US, OKAY? If we're quiet it is because we are good allies choosing not to centre ourselves (and not because we were so concerned about making sure we got Flamy we kinda forgot about ourselves) (also not because Jonty can't find the backup recording where we might be louder) (why would you even think that? shut up). Flamy's latest single, If you ever leave, is out now. Find out more about her and what she's doing at flamygrant.com and check out Greenbelt's helpful payment plans for 2025's festival if you want a cool way to spread the cost. About Beer Christianity Beer Christianity is an anti-capitalist, pro-BLM, pro-LGBTQ+, anti-imperialist, post-post-post-evangelical podcast where we drink a bit and talk a lot. Our aim is to be real, helpful and entertaining. Beer Christianity also has a newsletter in which Jonty and guest authors comment on the news, theological issues and stuff that matters. He updates it according to his own wildly inconsistent neurodivergent schedule, but it's a good read. Sign up for the Beer Christianity newsletter on Substack. Support Beer Christianity… Putting the show together costs a bunch of money in hosting fees, editing software, equipment and time. If you can, please help out by donating via Buy Me a Coffee (or in our case, a beer) where you can make one-off donations or do the membership thing. Follow Beer Christianity on Twitter: @beerxianity and find us on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube and, probably, loads of other places. We love hearing from listeners. You can email us at beerchristianity AT yahoo DOT com. We often respond to mails we get on the show. And if you leave us a voicenote on Insta we might air your question on an episode. There's also a connected Show With Music on Spotify called New Old Music. Check it out if you like eclectic music and random chat. Other things… Malky's design work has graced many good magazines and music videos. You can find his stuff and even commission him if he's not too busy, here. Jonty's novel, Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird, is not literature but it's quite fun if you like Supernatural, Africa or the Goth scene. Laura doesn't want us to post her BookTok until she's posted more videos. She may have prayed for the app to be banned just to avoid it. Beliefs… We don't really want to preach at you, but some people like to know what we believe. It's this: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and came to teach us a better way to be, while reconciling us to God and each other in a way we could never do without Him. He also changed water into wine. Nice.

In this week's episode, our storytellers delve into their personal encounters with psychedelics—moments where reality became a blur, perceptions began to shift, and the boundaries of consciousness expanded. Part 1: While tripping on acid, Michael Czajkowski goes into anaphylaxis. Part 2: Dust Cwaine sees their body differently while experimenting with magical mushrooms. Michael Czajkowski is an origami physicist, fashion redesigner, experimental science communicator and amateur bicycle pilot. Their research concerns materials that have been punctured, folded and otherwise damaged strategically so they will move in dramatic unusual and controllable ways. This research feeds into their greater goals, to connect tangible science with uncommon and underserved audiences. This is the focus of their work with Science for Georgia as Director of Advocacy. In their spare time, they like to maintain their social network: mikemingle.com Dust Cwaine (aka David Cutting) is a Singer-Songwriter and Drag Artist. They are a Non-Binary Aromantic, known for their bright and earthy creativity. Dust's art centers itself in the political nature of queer identity, evoking a sense of belonging and togetherness with their presence in live spaces. Dust Cwaine started Drag in 2016, since their debut They have Produced and Hosted over 250 shows, and They have written 3 Drag musicals. In 2020 Dust began creating music and released a demo album of tracks they created while in quarantine aptly titled AMATUER and on September 23rd 2022 they released Their debut LP Arcana in collaboration with Josh Eastman of Helm Studios. Dust's music carries inspiration from the alt rock insurgence of the late 90's and early 2000's, lyrically weaving earnesty with humor, for an emotional familiarity that is immediately disarming. Their live shows involve a blending of drag and music that intentionally try to break down the walls between the performer and the audience, Dust refers to this as community, where everybody has an equally important part to play. Trans femme, genderqueer spiritual drag artist Bonnie Violet shares how the creative process out pictures in her drag performances and speaking engagements. She has learned to lean into Grace to expand her role as an artist and let her inner child out. As a child, she was constantly told that she was not masculine enough or big enough by her father, but drag lets her lean in and embrace her femineity. She explains how today's gay, lesbian, biracial, and trans stereotypes limit our full creative expression. Our relationship to how we see ourselves impacts how we approach our lives. "When you see me, if you only see a trans person, then you don't see me," she said. "There's more to me than that." Bonnie Violet shares her definition of grace. When we recognize our grace, we realize that we are already worthy. We don't practice creativity to make ourselves whole; we are creative just because. She explains how grace has expanded her view of life. She uses the definition of a White House as a metaphor. When a 10-year-old defines the term "White House," it differs from that of a 40-year-old. Our understanding of what "a white house" means enlarges. We can lean into our knowledge. Bonnie has learned to embrace herself wholeheartedly and continues to reveal parts of her that were always there; that is the gift of being a queer, trans, drag artist. She has the opportunity to push limits and boundaries. Grace puts God back into her life. Bonnie Violet explains that she gets to be part of her creation. She is a co-creator with the creator and has agency. Her creator is always with her. Bonnie ends the interview by reminding the listener that art helps us stop long enough to be present with ourselves. She has chosen to lace her narrative with a spiritual threat and enjoys teaching that process to others. Bonnie Violet is a trans femme genderqueer spiritual drag artist and digital chaplain. She is a YouTuber & Host of a queer chaplain podcast with such series as Drag & Spirituality, TranSpirit & Faith Leaders. She co-hosts Splintered Grace with her conservative Christian aunt & At the CCC recovery podcast. Creator and founder of Allies Linked for the Prevention of HIV & AIDS (a.l.p.ha.), the annual Drag & Spirituality Summit. Bonnie Violet shares her experience, strength, and hope with HIV for 24 years, recovering from drugs, alcohol, and sexual assault, among other things, for 14 years in classrooms, community centers, churches, online, and pretty much anywhere else she is invited. As a queer chaplain, she is present with people in death and dying to self by helping to lace one's narrative with a spiritual thread to remind one of their resilience, strengthen faith in self, create serenity in the now, and instill hope for their future. "5 Questions With.." is a bonus feature from the Left of Str8 Show, where we ask 5 sometimes silly, sometimes serious questions that our curious mind wants to know about our special interview guests from the previous week. Listen in as we ask the fun and quirky type of questions that really get into the personalities of our guests. Today we have have two sets of questions to ask. First we have Drag Artist and Podcaster Jessica L'Whor answering her 5 questions. Jessica is one the go to and hardest work drag artists in Colorado. Since starting drag in her college years at Colorado State University, she has steadily improved and worked her craft to now being able to do it full time. Jessica's Altar Ego Zachary is also a Model. Jessica was one of my favorite interviews of the season and her 5 questions are as fun and quirky as she is. Next we ask 5 questions of Author JD Doyle who wrote the new book; “1981, My Gay American Roadtrip,” and you all know how much I love a gay roadtrip. JD is also an impressive archivist of LGBTQ Music and Texas LGBTQ studies and has had his websites archived to the National Library of Congress. I loved reading JD's book and it took me back to my Senior Year of High School, growing up in the LA area and visiting many of the same spots that JD did. He did a great job on his 5 questions. Bospar's Curtis Sparrer and Cannes' most famous drag queen Michael Sanchez AKA Holly White are both joining us on today's episode of Politely Pushy. When Curtis attended Cannes Lions last year, he noticed there wasn't any LGBTQIA+ nightclubs for attendees. This year, he took a page from Bospar's tech clients (who are always looking to meet a need) and launched a pop-up LGTBQIA+ bar for anyone interested in a safe space. This couldn't have come at a better time as US brands are facing pushback for their support of the LGBTQIA+ community. Curtis found the perfect partner in Michael, who is about to open a cabaret with his husband. Michael's alter ego Holly White is a master on stage, performing and DJ-ing all genres of music into the early hours of the morning. Interested in seeing Mika on stage? Join us for our Cannes Lions PR Afterparty at Club Courage with PRWeek's Steve Barrett: 9pm CET June 21st at L'Experience on 4 Rue Bivouac Napoléon, 06400 Cannes, France. For more information and to RSVP, visit bospar.com/Cannes/

EPISODE 115: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) It's kind of a drag: The Republican Party has persecuted, vilified, targeted, and endangered every drag performer (and any of the rest of us who have refused to join them in their smears) by branding them 'Groomers' has been twisting itself in knots for a month all to protect a new New York Congressman who has been identified by a Brazilian Drag Star as a fellow Drag Artist. Just when we thought "George Santos" had run out of new names, he got his best yet: Kitara Ravache. And there's a photo. And there's apparently a new VIDEO. And this is all that's left to Kevin McCarthy: throw Kitara overboard and risk a smaller House majority, or stick with him and spend the rest of the next two years answering questions about SANTOS'S DRESS SELECTION AND ABILITY TO ACCESSORIZE. It's. Perfect. Plus: the only Republican who's lied more than Santos does it again. Trump inadvertently gives the DOJ evidence of his intent to steal classified folders. And under oath in the E. Jean Carroll rape lawsuit he is asked who's the woman in the photo with him. He answers "that's my wife Marla Maples." It's not. It's... E. Jean Carroll. Could've been worse. Could've been Kitara Ravache. B-BLOCK (16:24) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: "Critical Boy" in Texas. (17:50) IN SPORTS: The National Hockey League destroys its own "Pride Night" in Philadelphia, choosing to defend not the LGBTQ community it pretended to celebrate, but the bigoted player who hid behind his religion that endorsed Russia's attack on Ukraine because Ukraine has Pride Parades. It's a disaster. (25:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Compromises in exchange for debates, Boris Johnson's new book, and a Tesla engineer says there's a problem with the 2016 "Tesla X Drives Itself" video. He says: it's fake. C-BLOCK (29:48) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Republican Primary Debate Chairman David Bossie - THAT David Bossie - says he's willing to put some debates on CNN and/or NBC. Do you know how much CNN and/or NBC had to prostitute themselves just to get this far? I do, from personal experience. Because in 2008, the Republicans' debate price to NBC was: "Fire Olbermann." Join Amanda Wakeley as she is joined by a different celebrity guest each week as she uncovers their very own Style DNA. This week's guest is Ella Vaday - I always knew that I wanted to include a Drag Artist in this first series. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the brilliant and very modest Ella Vaday (say Hell Of A Day fast and you will understand the humour behind the name), AKA Nick Collier, the actor and dancer. Nick created his drag persona Ella Vaday during Lockdown and then went on to be a finalist on the third series Ru Paul's Drag Race UK. We had a fascinating conversation about the transformative process Nick goes through, his attention to detail and his passion for getting the proportions right… think about it…if you have a huge wig and broad shoulders there is quite a skill in getting the proportions to balance. Nick kindly agreed to come as Ella and I was transfixed from the moment she walked through the door… I hope that comes across in our conversation.
What an amazing experience and dive we had the pleasure of having the fabulous Shawn Ellis Rogers host five podcasts and an up and coming Talent group Podcast an up and coming podcast network serving your realness and the real talk about reality TV and pop culture, and I was a guest on Shawn's show Real Reality Realness. In this episode, we take a deep dive into both cultures. With Shawn being born in the early 90s and me being born at the end of the 90s. one right after the other, we look at our past and how we were raised. Our queerness and how it developed us to adulthood. In short, this episode is about two people that want to make a positive impact, be inspired, and, in the process, hopefully, inspire others that open-mindedness is not that scary.

A Conversation w/ Joshua T Berglan welcomes Drag Artist Billy aka Kitty Demure aka Hogatha Cysty for a powerful chat about the difference between the LGBTQ community and the agenda, what it is like to speak out against the agenda, what people should know about drag culture, discovering our sexuality, the church and how God can and will use anyone for His purposes. Drag artist Billy has worked in the drag industry for over 10 years. He has worked with the most famous performers of our time. His character, Kitty Demure, gained attention globally for his video discouraging parents and children from bringing children into drag culture, knowing that it is an adult entertainment and lifestyle. During covid, Billy created an online character named Hogatha Cysty. Hogatha has become an internationally known character. Known as a "meme queen". Hogatha holds a mirror to society and forces people to think critically about current culture. He is often banned and de-platformed from social media. He equally upsets all sides of politics. The Balut Kiki Project: Uniquely Pinoy. Unapologetically Queer.
Pagpapatuloy lamang ito ng ating maharot na kikihan with drag super queens Miss Clea Torres and Miss Maria Christina!Matapang nilang sasagutin ang mga nabiting issues from the previous episode like having sex in drag, the business of tucking and the inevitable 'accidents', at ang laban at pakikipagtagisan ng galing, ganda, at talento ng mga Pinoy drag artists versus the best of the rest of the world. Alamin natin: may laban nga ba ang mga reynang Pinoy versus the likes of Bob the Drag Queen, Monet X Change, Violet Chachki, Bianca Del Rio? Must-listen ang 2-episode serving of artistic realness ng Project for aspiring drag artists and creative minds. Confidence. Honesty. Uniqueness. Perseverance. Authenticity.Jan magaling ang ating mga Bessies! At shempre, hindi magpapahuli ang ating mga panauhing pandangal sa project na ito - Philippine drag royalty, SpacesMNL stalwart Miss Clea Torres and Pinoy Big Brother 2022 Drag Mentor Miss Maria Christina (the artist formerly known as MC BLCK). As two of the country's premiere drag artists, these two ladies school us on Philippine drag her-story and drag in the time of a pandemic. They kiki with us about why they got into drag, what they get out of it, and how they deal with a (sometimes) toxic fan base. They identify where the current center of drag is and kung may rivalry nga ba among drag artists from different parts of the country. At mga drag pushers din pala ang ating mga guests dahil, aside from the fact na may mga tine-train silang mga drag babies sa kanilang Drag Academy ng Spaces MNL, they will also share with us their very personal process of creating their own drag personas. Choices! Choices!Mapaamin kaya natin sila kung may balak ba silang sumali sa mga international drag reality competitions? Pero part one pa lang ito, Bes! Hello my name is Stargirl from Chicago, people would consider me a “look” queen when it comes to my drag but I refer to my drag as club fantasy a mix between a. whimsical and kawaii aesthetic. I've been in the Chicago drag scene for 3 years and drag and art has been my greatest accomplishment I've accomplished in my life. My art and drag is my passion and my drive and I'm really proud of the obstacles and success I've accomplished from starting at the bottom to now, the art of drag is something beyond and beautiful.Stargirl ☆꧁༒☬

The art of drag, with its emphasis on exaggerated costumes and makeup, has gained mainstream popularity around the world, particularly over the last decade. And China is no exception. While drag in the West can trace its roots from Elizabethan England up to the underground queer scene of New York, drag in East Asia draws its own lineage from the Beijing Opera. As one of the more prominent members of the drag queen community in Shanghai, Cocosanti joins this week's episode of Mosaic of China to discuss the meaning of drag, her own personal journey as an artist, and the way in which drag queens can teach us all that… it's OK to be a little weird.
