This week's show is with Dr. Paul J. Leslie. Paul is a psychotherapist, author, and educator in Aiken, South Carolina. Paul is a licensed therapist and a National Board Certified Fellow in Hypnotherapy. He has a doctorate in Counseling Psychology and is presently the coordinator of the psychology program at Aiken Technical College. He has authored eight books which focus on the areas of transformative psychotherapy, healing, shamanism, and personal development. Paul is a popular trainer of Solution-Based therapies, Ericksonian Hypnosis, and creative coaching applications. In this show, Paul and Lian explored the parallels between magic and psychotherapy, the power of our context for creating the life we live, how and why we make distinctions and how they can be limiting, and how we can move from a “problem solving existence” to a magical life in which we listen to our own hearts to guide us. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: What is your Context? This is the filter through which you will see everything and create within. Paul talked about the way we make distinctions - this is natural and unavoidable, the invitation is to notice when our distinction has become a problem or limitation that is creating a life that isn't the one we desire I love how Paul talked about experience vs information... this is especially relevant for coaches and therapists but is actually so helpful for all of us who wish to create a life of wonder and meaning. Sprinkled, like confetti. This is how I think the half halt should be applied to your ride. Little ones that are really everywhere. None of them too big. Or ‘stand out’. Yet all of them working together to give the desired effect or result. For many riders, the half halt, rather than being like confetti, becomes more like broadsheet newspapers scattered randomly around the arena. Not too many, some altogether. And not really having any use other than to make things look messy and unorganized. Size Matters How do you get your broadsheet size half halts to resemble a piece of confetti? You refine. And refine… The energy that you are putting into that one ‘big’ half halt (your standard broadsheet), divided up and divided amongst a whole lot of smaller, more refined half halt (your ‘confetti'). Yes, I realize I am really oversimplifying something that so many riders struggle with, the trusty half halt. And yet, it really is that simple. It is riders ‘wanting’ to make it harder than it really is... That is the real struggle with the half halt. And they want to make it harder because, although it is simple, it is usually not that easy to grasp when actually riding. I have spoken about the half halt a lot… It really and truly is a sticking point for so many riders. I won’t get into too much of the what and why (you can read about that HERE and HERE and HERE if you’re interested). Instead, I want to give you some practical tips you can use while riding to help you work on turning your half halt from a broadsheet to a tiny piece of confetti. Light, lovely, and a feel-good sign for all who experience it. Read More... Can you put into words what the half halt is? Let’s say you are speaking with your friend, who is not a horsey person, and you’re telling her all about the half halt. What would you say? This week I had two eye-opening conversations. One with a rider and one with my sister… I drew a similar conclusion from both conversations. My conclusion? There are a whole lot of riders out there who don’t really know what the half halt is, or why everyone goes on and on about it… So, back to you and your version of the half halt… It might be easier to start with what it is not. A half of a halt! But, you knew that, didn’t you. And yet, there are many riders who are surprised at that. “It’s kind of slowing down, but not actually letting the horse stop…, I think…” No, that’s not quite it. What is the Half Halt The half halt is a few things in riding. However, we can simplify things by dividing the purpose of the half halt into three simple categories 1. An effective ‘intercom’ system between you and your horse 2. A little ‘fixer-upper' 3. An effective way to help you and your horse maintain balance, focus, and forwardness I am a firm believer that most riders can take the number of current half halts they ride every time they're in the saddle and double or triple that number. And that is just to get started with! We are simply not doing enough half halts. And the irony is, that when you are getting started with it, the more you do, the less you will have to do it later. The half halt is really one of those things that you can do a lot of the work up front and reap the benefits later. A movie without flow is like a martini glass without a stem: preposterous. Nathan and Ryan address the importance of screating an elegant flow with deer-like momentum in your screenplay. They break down the sandiness of “Mad Max” (the newer one), Ryan reveals his “Edge of Your Seat” test, and they discuss why screenplay writers should never have standing desks. They plan to do script surgery on Wonder Woman, but it doesn't need any. Nathan pitches his slam-dunk screenplay concept, “Diva and the Devil.” Ryan agrees to be an equal partner in bringing it to life and in all proceeds from its sale.
I have been trying to get Very Be Careful on Kilson Street since 2013. Believe it or not. Trying to get them on has been a labor of love almost. Usually a band would ask us to be on. But not these guys. Of course they wouldn’t. In my opinion, I think these guys are the most talented and entertaining set of musicians in all of California, maybe the fucking planet. So getting them to give us a mad minute of their time had proved to be difficult. But I understood why. A group of their caliber would be hella busy. And especially since they are LA natives, it would be hard for them to take that long drive down the 5 fwy to our garage. I honestly don’t remember the first time I saw Very Be Careful live. It must have been back in 2008 or 2009. But I DO remember landing on one of their YouTube videos even before that. I don’t know what YouTube-black hole I led myself down before I clicked on the proverbial video. What I saw was a set of guys playing this thing called Vallenato that sounded to me like a cumbia (which I am very familiar with), on a street corner in east LA or somewhere in LA. Tons of people swarmed around them and danced on the street. This only proved to my very young mind at the time that the sound of vallenato music could bring many different people together on a street corner in LA, even though the lyrics were in Spanish. Music is definitely a universal language. It only takes a great rhythm and jumping beat to get people on their feet to move. Very Be Careful have played around the state and internationally in the past decade. Always playing locally and keeping themselves booked up is common for these guys. So after a few tries earlier in the Summer to try to get them on Kilson Street I felt a little bummed that we couldn’t get our dates to align. BUT, as luck has it, and as you can see and hear for yourselves, we managed to agree on a date and get these guys on the show… FINALLY! I always highly recommend people listen for themselves. Instead of sitting here and dissection one’s music, I prefer to let the listener take action and judge or dissect the music as they please. But one thing is for sure with VBC: You Will Not Stay in Your Seat when they play. Make sure you visit Very Be Careful on their social media pages to catch up on any news or new local shows. You won’t want to miss them. www.verybecareful.la Special thanks also to Logan Crow for giving us some time to interview him and come into the Frida Cinema to film. We will be doing more in the near future with them and are excited to do so. http://thefridacinema.org/ Thanks to all the people who showed up on the night of the taping. The half-halt is one of the most useful aids you have in your toolkit as a rider. However, many riders are not utilizing this subtle yet powerful communication to its full potential. The half-halt should be one of the earliest things that riders learn to master when learning to ride their horse. It is a vital part of riding well and being able to perform accurate, balanced movements with your horse. However, while many riders understand the concept of the half-halt in theory, unfortunately, the carrying out of the actual movement leaves a lot of room for improvement. The half-halt is essentially a rein check or a postponement. You are asking your horse for his undivided attention and letting him know that something is about to happen. When ridden correctly, the half-halt can be used to re-balance your horse, to ask him for his attention, prepare him for an upcoming movement, to ask for more self-carriage or collection, to steady or slow him down, to set up transitions and, in fact, should be sprinkled generously throughout your ride from start to finish.
