Do you ever feel like you are way too zoomed in to your own drama to actually see a path forward? Imagine you're on a Google document and you just can't see the whole table but you need to see the whole table to do the equation. And then you zoom out. Suddenly you've got access to all of the tools you need and you're ready to go. What if I told you it's possible to apply this phenomena to your own life? I call it “The Snow Globe Effect” because, if you learn to observe your life from an aerial point of view (as if you're peaking through a snow globe), you gain a whole new perspective. Think of it as your highest self peering down at your life. She can observe appreciate the moments of alignment and shake it up when she doesn't like how things are looking. A few years ago, I was going through a pretty rough break up (from a situationship LOL). At the time, my mom's advice to go to the beach and switch up my routine felt totally inaccessible. But when I started to peer at my situation through the eyes of my highest self looking down at the snow globe, I popped a bubble of stagnant energy. Finally, I could feel my highest self looking down with pride. If you're feeling the nudge the shake things up, this episode is for you! In this episode, I discuss: What the snow globe effect is How this concept helped me through break-ups and feeling overwhelmed Using the snow globe effect to totally switch up my experience in NYC How to use the snow globe effect to get to the root of a problem Want to send a voice note to the podcast and have Chelsea answer you on air? What has luck got to do with it? Well, the short answer is absolutely nothing, and when Chef John Shields and his wife, Karen, took a leap of faith and moved to a little-known town in rural Virginia, they had no idea how life-changing that decision would be. It was after a New York Times writer stumbled upon their groundbreaking cooking at the little country inn named Town House in Chilhowie, Virginia, where they were really developing their style of cooking, that their careers really took off. But, as chef Eli says in the podcast, luck is nothing more than being fully prepared when the opportunity comes your way. Here's what else is covered: John's newly found love & enthusiasm for the “B' word Having no direction early on in his young adult life and finding food Cooking with his father ignited the flame in him How NOT getting hired in New York changed his trajectory, and you can blame it on dial-up internet Working for Charlie Trotter in one of the most challenging kitchens in the world Why failures, disappointments, and the feeling of discomfort are SO essential to developing yourself as a chef It's OK to fail! But fail forward and learn from every failure by turning it into a lesson Why being a great chef is like walking a tightrope between failure and ambition How working at Alinea shaped his perspective The hilarious story of how the relationship with his future wife was exposed after dating and working together How the husband-wife team splits responsibilities and how that relationship has evolved after children Moving to the middle of nowhere with no expectations How a full-page article in the New York Times changed everything for them The one and only Kitchen Arts & Letters bookstore in NYC How the layout of their building gives them the opportunity to do two separate concepts under the same roof The way that he approaches food, the ingredients and how he brings them to the plate, and his intuition-based style of cooking Allowing a plant to go through its full cycle of life to see what kinds of exciting stages it goes through and how that can impact the way you use it Breaking down one of their more novel ideas from back in the day A way that Chef stays grounded and on the right path The benefits of having two restaurants that can feed each other's customers as well as help use up the product they get in the house Why learning a craft such as cooking takes time and effort, and why you should not rush your career A huge shout out to our sponsors, Maxwell McKenney and Singer Equipment, for their unwavering support, which allows us to be able to bring these conversations to you. In this episode, we're exposing all of our toxic traits and share some top offenders submitted by listeners. Raeann gives Kristina reasons why moving to NYC could have a positive impact on her career, shares an update about how she's thriving in the city, and we talk about our current obscure Tik Tok holes. “Another really bad toxic trade of mine is how often I lose things.” - Kristina “My top toxic trait is thinking everyone's in love with me.” - Raeann We also talk about: Kristina's exciting family update! Why Raeann's thriving in NYC How rude it is that our partners can't read our minds Zillow-ing our friend's homes Returns are the worst People whose phone is constantly dead or dying Always needing a treat when we leave the house Bad Bunny and Kendall Jenner How long it takes us to get ready Kristina: “This is someone's toxic trait in his mind as well: My phone is always about to die.” Raeann: “That is a toxic trait about people that really annoys me. Today's guest is Alexis Wolfe, founder of NYCDateNite, a New York based blog that has become the go-to resource for dating in New York City. We sit down and talk about the below topics: How and why she started her blog: love for food and dating in NYC How she met her boyfriend on Hinge, biggest lesson with dating and focusing on if you like them, rather if they like you Building her community and followers on Instagram: how she structures her day and posting schedule and restaurant visits Realities and difficulties of dating in a city like New York and seeing someone for who they are instead of romanticizing the relationship Struggles with stressing about the future and not living in the present Confession Relating to ‘faking it till you make it' About Alexis: Dating can be a treacherous road, potentially leaving a girl pretty frustrated. On the other hand, dating can also be an amazing time — that is, of course, if you know exactly where to go and what to do. That's why I launched NYCDateNite. NYCDateNite is an ever-evolving repository of the trendiest places to take your date, while also serving as a guide to enjoying a night out with friends, brunch with family, and everything in between. I'm here to help you navigate the maze that is dating, especially in a city like NYC where the choices seem endless (including the wrong choices). At times, you almost want to give up — at least I did. That's why this platform was born. I realized that even if I didn't have control over finding my perfect man, I did have control over where to meet him. So even if the guy wasn't for me, it would never again be a total loss because, hey, at least the food was good. Assembled here are some of my most trusted recommendations to ensure that you're dating both efficiently and enjoyably. You will hopefully find, as I have, that there's no such thing as a failed date if you're equipped with a game plan. https://www.nycdatenite.com/ https://www.instagram.com/nycdatenite/ Feel free to leave a positive review on Apple Podcasts if you enjoyed this episode and be sure to share this with a friend! Our life journeys can be filled with steps of faith and adventure, but also difficulty and challenges. Ricky and Krista Ortiz are certainly familiar with both. After meeting in Bible college they married and then started Meta Church in NYC. In today's episode Ricky and Krista are honest about their personal and marital struggles. At the brink of divorce, they stood before their own Red Sea wondering how they would ever get across. Join us as we discuss: ▫️Grief, loss, addiction, and depression ▫️How Jesus changed their lives ▫️Serving as pastors in NYC ▫️How they serve their community in tangible ways ▫️Living open-handedly with generosity ▫️Staying faithful despite difficulties ▫️Making an impact on our world Ricky and Krista share their story in hopes that all who hear it will know God can work in the midst of theirs too. If you are standing in front of your own Red Sea today, do not be afraid. Stand still. The Lord will fight for you (Exodus 14:13-14). And when God helps you make it to the other side, we pray you stand in awe of Him. Just as Ricky and Krista continue to do. “Be a funnel and be open handed. It's our love offering back to God.” “Be a love offering by telling your God story.” Connect with Ricky and Krista: Meta Church - @metanyc - https://meta.church Krista - @krista_ortiz - kristaortiz.com Ricky - @rico6886 Faithbox - @getfaithbox
Laura Lea Brant is a two time cookbook author, chef and voice of reason in the culinary world. Laura Lea has always had this strong desire to fit in and belong, more than her need to belong has been the pull to create a life that aligns with her core wants and desires. From ditching the conventional path of career, being a woman who grew up in the South to breaking relationship patterns, Laura Lea is vulnerable and honest in this conversation. Laura Lea also opens up in a bold way about the way social media has shaped her career but also about the boundaries she has had to create in what and how she shares her life. In this episode, you will learn: What inspired Laura Lea to make the big move from Nashville to NYC How food helped Laura Lea navigate mental health and anxiety Laura Lea's most influential people growing up How growing up in the South influenced Laura Lea's voice and sense of rebellion The pivotal moment when Laura Lea decided to unlearn the learning that “women in the south were supposed to be seen, not heard” The signals Laura Lea looks for when she needs to make big life decisions and on following her gut The core learning about materialism and intentionality that continues to stay with Laura Lea decade after decade: “it doesn't matter how many times you walk into a store and buy things, you are going to want more if that's your perspective about it. There will always be new shiny things.” How Laura Lea has had periods of living to eat and then during times of stress, eating to live. What Laura Lea is learning and unlearning about what a healthy relationship looks like. What social media “love bombing” can look like (yes, this is a thing!) How social media has influenced Laura Lea's career and how she has had to unlearn what and how to share to her growing audience. How assumptions on social media can be dangerous and what boundaries she is setting to have a healthier relationship to social media. We discuss Cal Newport's approach to social media and his book, “Digital Minimalism”. How to start with the work, then build your following - and the value of consistency. How we both think about self care and alone time - and how it allows us to show up more fully for those we love. In this episode, I mention the work of Cal Newport and his book, “Digital Minimalism”. Tips on how to Biohack your Sleep to improve Performance & Longevity with Elizabeth from Baloo Living! Elizabeth is the CEO + founder of Baloo Living, a weighted blanket brand inspired by our bodies' innate healing abilities and natural balance. It is the only eco-Friendly, luxurious weighted blanket made with lead-free glass microbeads and soft premium cotton that's cool and breathable for year-round use. The deep pressure stimulation of a Baloo Blanket feels like a firm hug, massage or swaddling designed to soothes the nervous system, alleviates stress and anxiety, and increases serotonin production - the happy hormone. Elizabeth bounced around several different industries before getting to where she is today. After graduating from University of Texas with a marketing degree, she held roles in politics, advertising, and finance before working for a startup tequila brand and ultimately in children's book publishing at Scholastic. Throughout all her experiences, she still felt like she had a lot of untapped energy, drive and ambition to give that wasn't being utilized. So, she quit. She said she felt like a huge failure and decided to go to the one place in the world that she felt really good – Bali. When she got there, it was an unlock. She said she was able to get out of the typical corporate grind for productivity and reconnect with what made her joyful. That's where she got the idea to start Baloo. Questions and topics we dive into today include: Baloo Living's Founding Story – How Elizabeth launched the brand after an extended trip to Bali shortly after losing her full-time job in NYC How weighted blankets are a proven remedy for insomnia, anxiety, overall health and help athletes recover and repair. How can the way you start your day impact your sleep Tips to improve your sleep during the day How to create a sleep hygiene routine before bed and a sleep cave! What is your sleep routine? Here is what me (Debbie) is doing right now to optimize her sleep! Waking up naturally (when possible) without an alarm with the sunrise Exercising – moving outside with the fresh air, time in nature and morning sunlight Intermittent fasting and time restricted eating (11-4) weekdays with once a week a little longer 20-24 hour fast when possible (rest days usually Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon meal to meal). So, I take extra melatonin, use the Bio Mat and cold shower before bed- plus need more time to wind down so bedtime is later. A few nights a week we do “sleepy time” Yin Yoga (Travis Eliot), or I try to use the Bio Mat (Matt) and Normatech (Norm) before bed to help recovery and relaxation (PNS) I close the blinds and make the rooms dark and cold– lights off or dim) No caffeine after 12pm…and no alcohol (I rarely drink alcohol 1-3x/month) close to bedtime as it will mess up your deep sleep for sure! I write in my gratitude journal each night three things I am grateful that day as well as sent intentions for the next time plus I read at least three pages… it doesn't sound like much but that is my goal before I fall asleep! Unplug your Wi-Fi or at least keep devices out of your bedroom (including no T.V.) and put everything into AIRPLANE MODE! Set boundaries when you are off-line and unavailable …no emails, social media, text or phone calls 1-3 hours before bed. We are connected enough ALL day long and always online. Disconnect to connect to you and your family. Create the sleep cave and spa like environment -try using essential oils as Vibrant Blue Oils as… Circadian Rhythm® Blend: “Struggling to fall or stay asleep? You might be physically exhausted, but your brain won't shut off. So, you lie awake, willing your brain to turn off so you can finally fall asleep. Your struggle ends right now.” Adrenal® Essential Oil Blend: “The Adrenal® blend is designed to balance the extremes, calming the adrenals when too much cortisol is released and supporting them during periods of adrenal fatigue.” Parasympathetic® Essential Oil Blend: “Turn on the body's ability to heal with this all-natural essential oil blend made from a synergistic combination of clove and lime essential oils. Why you won't actually sweat when you use CAR.O.L. What your life will look like after using CAR.O.L for a year or two. M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Power Quotes From The Show Reversing The Effects Of Sitting All Day "The human body is conditioned to be in survival mode but if you're sedentary sitting in front of a computer all day, your body will adapt to that. A sedentary lifestyle like that will certainly affect the quality of your life and can lead to disease later on in life. So, from the perspective of adaptation, you do reverse the effects of sitting all day by doing CAR.O.L rides because we see it in the blood work and that's what will tell you whether or not you're healthy. It's your insulin levels, cholesterol, blood pressure, your hip to waist ratio; all of your levels." - Ratna Singh Turning Exercise On Its Head "The reason why CAR.O.L came about is because I was doing a disease management program in a Middle Eastern country where diabetes is the second-highest in the world and I couldn't get people to exercise despite having incredible gyms. So, I asked myself, 'Why don't people do exercise?' We had to fundamentally turn exercise on its head by knocking out the time element, the inconvenience, and the boredom." - Ratna Singh Focus On Wellness, Not Fear "Focus on wellness, not fear. Fear is a destroyer of everything. I try to manage it every day by just surrendering to what is instead of worrying about it every day. If you worry about what is going on, really you are saying a prayer to attract whatever it is that you don't want versus what you do want." - Ratna Singh Links From Today's Show With Ratna Singh Cured Nutrition Oura Ring 336 Joe Sheehey CAR.O.L Ratna Singh 312 Kevin Kelly Dr. Niels Vollaard 084 Dr. David Perlmutter Dr. David Sinclair 250 Dave Asprey Global Wellness Institute 332 John Wineland Dr. Cedric X. About this episode This episode marks our 35th episode since we launched in January 2019. When The Startup Story launched we had no audience. Yet, even with not having an audience, Larry Namer, founder of E! Entertainment Television, was gracious enough to share his Startup Story for our launch. There is a high chance that you have not heard our first few episodes. For that reason, we are going to bring our first two episodes off the shelf to ensure they make your podcast queue. This week is the first of those two episodes. I hope you enjoy this episode as it originally aired on our launch date of January 15, 2019. This episode of The Startup Story features Larry Namer, founder of E! Entertainment Television. When you think of E!, you may instantly think of the show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Now for the record, Larry had nothing to do with the Kardashians phenomenon. He did, however, have everything to do with the building of this media network giant, which eventually sold for approximately $3,000,000,000 in 2007. Kulveer Taggar is the Founder & CEO @ Zeus Living, the startup providing a home of your own for business travel with smartly furnished homes for extended stays. To date, Kul has raised over $14m in VC funding from some dear friends of the show in the form of Garry and Alexis @ Initialized, James and Pete @ NFX, Mike @ Floodgate, Y Combinator, GV and Naval Ravikant just to name a few. Prior to Zeus, Kul co-founded Auctomatic alongside Stripe's Patrick Collison, they ultimately sold the company for $5m. Before that, Kul co-founded Bosco, alongside former 20VC guest, Monzo's Tom Blomfield, they raised seed funding from YC before moving to the states to start Auctomatic. If that wasn't enough, Kul has also made several angel investments in the likes of Boom, Airhelp, Meetings.io and more. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Kul made his way from Oxford University to being at the centre of one of tech's most powerful hubs of YC and then with the founding of Zeus? What were Kul's biggest takeaways from his first 2 startups? How did that impact his operating mentality? 2.) What did the idea generation process look like for Kul with Zeus? How was James Currier @ NFX so foundational helping here? Why does Kul believe that the idea "really is everything" today? Why does Kul believe that customer acquisition channels are a core part of the product that must be considered from Day 1? 3.) Before hitting on Zeus, Kul and the team had many ideas, what did that idea validation process look like? How did Kul keep morale high in the team when continuously trying and stopping work on new projects? How does Kul think you can use culture as a superpower? As a leader, how can you be both vulnerable and strong at the same time? 4.) Kul has previously said that "tech-enabled businesses are just much harder than pure software plays". Why is that? What makes them so much more challenging? How do the required skills to be successful change when moving from pure software to tech-enabled? What single question remains the most important to ask when innovating in either? 5.) VCs are not so used to such operationally heavy businesses so how did Kul find the fundraising process? Why does Kul advocate that all founders should speak to investors and A/B test their idea before starting work on it? How did investors differ when comparing SF vs NYC? How did the messaging have to change? What was the most common pushback or concern? What have Initialized done to have such a foundational impact? What makes Garry such a special investor to have on board? At Inman Connect, the top movers and shakers in real estate come together to learn about the latest technology and explore what’s next for the industry. And in 2019, the hot topics include disruptors like Compass and eXp, the impact of data aggregators on the MLS, and the relevance of franchisers in light of tech centric startup brokerages. So, what are the most interesting conversations happening at the conference this year? And what SHOULD we be talking about? Today, Rob and Greg are sharing the highlights of Inman & CEO Connect (live from the lobby of the Marriott Marquis), discussing how the conference focuses on the intersection of real estate and technology and what predictions Inman has gotten right over the years. They speak to Brad Inman’s interview with Rob Reffkin, Ben Kinney’s talk knocking brands like Compass and eXp, and the conversation among brokers, franchisers and tech company CEOs regarding the MLS. Rob asks why no one is talking about Redfin, and Greg predicts when the industry will recognize it as a significant force. Then Rob and Greg snag Sam DeBord, Managing Broker and VP of Strategic Growth for Coldwell Banker Danforth in Seattle, to get his take on Kinney’s advice to brokers and the research around stock options and franchise loyalty. Listen in to understand why franchises need to make their value offerings more obvious and easy to use—and learn why Greg believes the mortgage space is ripe for disruption. This week we watched Iron Fist (or Danny Rand and the Big Punch), the recently cancelled Marvel/Netflix joint. Iron Fist is a rare show that burned very, very faintly for almost all of its run, until it burned so bright in its last 30 seconds that it spontaneously combusted. What superheroes would we want to defend the outer boroughs of NYC? How much of our tax money should go towards public bathrooms? Is Scrooge McDuck the wealthiest superhero? Plus - a sleeper contender for the worst episode summary we've ever done!

Throughout NYC and the entire US, there is a serious lack of supply of affordable housing. This has a wide-ranging impact on cities and their growth. Any investor interested in the long-term health of their market knows how critical affordable housing is to the local community and future economy. Real estate entrepreneurs have a critical role in how cities develop, and we dive into this subject in this episode. Knox LaSister is the CEO of World Urban Property Management. (His online job title actually describes him as a "World Urban Strategist"). With over 30 years of experience in New York City Real Estate, his impact and expertise in the affordable housing industry has been significant. He is a thought leader in urban development and consults on new public/private developments around the country and the world. We also talk about potential impacts that new technology has on real estate and how this will change the face of urban development. This includes things such as vertical farming, self-sustaining development, and new ways of creating public/private partnerships. To Knox, it’s all about a housing environment which encourages community, that is not only better for the residents, but also has business and financial rewards for the owners. This episode brings up topics that are often left out of typical real estate conversations, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I learned a lot. We discuss topics such as: How have his early life experiences of being homeless and building his first home at age 15 shaped his career? The history and the current state of Affordable Housing in NYC How are the mindsets of renters and owners different? What is the future of public housing in NYC? How do you create self-sustaining communities? What’s to come with vertical farming and the future of food in urban areas? How does home ownership in low-income areas create community? Oftentimes on the podcast, we talk about the importance of “connection” and how we eradicate a lot of our undue anxiety by simply connecting to something, whether it be a passion or otherwise. This week’s guest is Colette, who is here to take us on a journey that exemplifies this idea with her incredibly inspirational story of being a professional singer in New York City who suddenly lost her voice one day, and how she ultimately re-connected with it years later through volunteering to sing to Alzheimer’s patients. Colette’s story is a powerful testament to the healing powers that intent can illicit, how we better treat and serve our elders, and how the fulfillment we receive from any endeavor we choose to pursue in life is ultimately dependent on the energy we choose to bring to it. PS — Colette is also hilarious. Highlights of this episode include: — How Colette lost her singing voice while trying to make it as a singer in NYC — How she was able to launch a career in comedy afterwards — How she re-discovered singing many years later through volunteering — Her grandmothers that inspired her to want to work with the elderly — The importance of having a purpose, and much more!
