James, The Fan Man, Miller is famous for something that no other person ever to live can claim the same fame. He fell into multiple boxing matches, football games, and even Buckingham Palace. Miller was a parachutist in the 1990s who loved the extreme sport of paragliding. He also was vocal about his distrust of social norms. Those two passions led Miller to his most famous stunt. He was skydiving into a boxing match at Caesar's Palace. In the 7th round of the heavyweight title fight match between Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe, Miller crashed directly into the ring, setting the whole arena into chaos. Despite the negative press, James could not stop attempting these stunts. He flew over sporting events for years to come.Things I Learned Last Night is an educational comedy podcast where best friends Jaron Myers and Tim Stone talk about random topics and have fun all along the way. As part of our Season III relaunch this week, we are revisiting a few of our favorite episodes that grapple with big life themes, break down the components of change, and dive into strategies that are relevant and applicable to you today. This is the story of an athletic prodigy. It's also the story of how setbacks become catalysts for change, how determination fuels a dream, and how a drive for adventure can evolve. And it is a story of risk-taking, mountain life, and personal reflection that characterize what it takes to ski and fly in the backcountry. For pro-skier Caite Zeliff, the derailing of her career as a ski racer was an opportunity to reconnect with herself and become the athlete she was always meant to be. At 12, Caite Zeliff started a ski racing career that brought her all over the world. She ascended, she earned a scholarship to a boarding school, she won titles, she received an invitation to the US Ski Team – and she also was rejected, blew out her knee, and burned out – all by age 20. When the U.S. Ski Team invitation didn't come, and she blew out her knee while racing for the University of New Hampshire, she left college and headed westward in search of big mountains and powder. It was in Jackson Hole, WY, where Caite found her true calling – freeskiing. This risk-taking mentality has built her a career as a professional freeskier. Beyond winning Jackson Hole's Kings and Queens of Corbet's twice, Caite has starred in films like Warren Miller's Timeless (2019) and Teton Gravity Research's Make Believe (2020), and Stoke the Fire (2021). Topics Include:- Caite's journey from ski racer to professional freeskier- Viewing “failure” as an opportunity- Wrestling with an inner obsession for achievement- Shifting focus from the outcome to the process- Processing childhood- Taking risks and stepping out of comfort zones- Finding your voice as a female in a male-dominated industry- The transformational power of women supporting women- Learning to fly and a shifted mindset- And other topics...Resources Mentioned:Caite's Website: https://www.caitezeliff.comCaite's IG: @caitezeliffTimeless, Warren Miller (2019): https://warrenmiller.com/film-archive/timeless-2019Make Believe, Teton Gravity Research (2020): https://www.tetongravity.com/films/make-believeStoke the Fire, Teton Gravity Research (2021): https://www.tetongravity.com/films/stoke-the-fire Powder Magazine: https://www.powder.com/stories/pro-deal-caite-zeliff/Freeskier Magazine: https://freeskier.com/stories/jackson-royaltyStay Connected:Signup for AIR BORN, our monthly newsletter! Living on the edge and creating your own rules with Adventurer of The Year Gavin McClurg Gavin Noll McClurg is an American paragliding pilot, adventurer, and offshore sailor. As a paraglider, he pioneered a route over the Alaska Range along with Dave Turner, and completed several expeditions over remote areas across North America. As a sailor, he circumnavigated the Earth twice. Gavin McClurg is no stranger to adventure and exploration. He is a 2015 National Geographic “Adventurer of the Year” for his unpowered paragliding expedition across the Canadian Rockies (documented in the Red Bull Media House feature film “The Rockies Traverse”). He became the first person to traverse the full length of the Alaska Range by foot and paraglider (unsupported) in 2016 (documented in the Red Bull Media House feature film “North of Known”). He is the owner, founder and Captain of “Offshore Odysseys”, a global kitesurfing/surfing/sailing expedition. He has twice circumnavigated the world by sail, living at sea for 13 straight years, including short-handed roundings of both notorious capes (Horn and Good Hope). Gavin holds the former North American record for foot-launched cross-country paragliding, a flight of 240 miles deep into Montana from his hometown of Sun Valley, Idaho. Gavin is the first American (and only 3rd non-European) to complete the “toughest adventure race on Earth”, the Red Bull X-Alps a paragliding/foot race across the Alps from Salzburg to Monaco. In ten days Gavin flew 1560 kilometers, walked 498 (12+ marathons), and scaled 52,000 meters of vertical ascent on foot (Everest 5 times). Gavin competed again in 2017, 2019, and 2021.
Originally “aired” May 27, 2019Last summer, Benjamin Jordan realized his lifelong dream of flying his paraglider along the entire length of Canada's southern Rocky Mountains. From Roosville, Montana to Prince George, BC, the 37-year old, Nelson-based filmmaker flew his wind-powered aircraft across some of BC's and Alberta's most rugged wilderness while having to make strategic landings atop mountains to avoid electrical storms or touching down within the forbidden boundaries of Banff National Park.Despite the many challenges he encountered along the way, none compared to the psychological struggle of sitting alone in the alpine for weeks at a time, waiting for poor weather or wildfire smoke to clear so that he could fly on. Able to carry no more than 12-days of food, Jordan would occasionally land in populated areas to refuel before heading back up into the nearest summit to re-launch.Of the entire expedition, Jordan was most nervous, and excited, about soaring over the glaciers and alpine lakes of Jasper National Park, North America's only National Park to allow Paraglider travel. Though its remoteness and mystery have caused pilots to stay away, Jordan dedicated a complete year to studying Jasper's unique topography with the ambitious dream of becoming the first person to fly across her entirety.Despite extended waits between flights, his fortune continued for 50 consecutive days until the unprecedented levels of wildfire smoke of late August left Jordan with no choice but to complete his 1200 km, un-supported journey on foot. During a 4-day (214 km) walk from McBride to Prince George, Jordan had time to reflect on his unique accomplishment while stepping into the record books for the Longest Vol-Biv (Fly-Camp) Expedition in America.A film depicting the entire journey will be released in the Spring of this year at theendlesschain.combenjaminjordan.com@benjaminjordanadventuretheschoolofdreams.org (philanthropic paragliding school in Malawi)Support The Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here. Studfit, FrenzyFans, KnightRoso, Herooftheskies, Phillish and GamerAmy discuss Mario Kart Tour mobile game Some questions include:ICEBREAKERWhat was one of the most most memorable/unique “first 12 High End items” you received in the game?Hydra's app has highlighted some of the first items you received in the game. What is your most memorable or unique?ThisBeChris Which course is improved the most by its R version in terms of fun factor?ThisBeChris What's your least favorite 3 item combination to get from an item box?GR★Jonboy88{TRZ} In the last Rundown I speculated that a New Donk City Tour would be a cool New Years celebration along with a new Kong alt. So if Nintendo started representing other series in MKT what other Nintendo franchises or games would you like see represented. Can be Mario or non Mario. And what would the spotlights and courses be like for those respective Tours me personally I want a Hyrule Tour Featuring Link from Zelda the Master Cycle and Paraglider from BOTW. And the track could be a remake of the Hyrule Castle course in MK8D.Studfit rephrase: we've seen Mario crossovers like Cat Peach/Cat Toad (Super Mario 3D World/Bowser's Fury) and Builder Mario/Builder Luigi (Mario Makers), what Nintendo crossover would you want to see? What would you envision the new items and tracks to be?KnightRoso Do you guys have any nicknames or shortened names for certain drivers? For example, a popular one is Holidaisy for Daisy (Holiday Cheer)Studfit rephrase: We've heard AussieKart's Bouce (Kangaroo Yoshi) take off, FrenzyFans use the term Hallowaluigi for Vampire Waluigi and I have desperately been trying to get names like Toilet Paper Mario catch on, what nicknames have you had for drivers (for K/G for that matter) that you enjoy using and the community needs to hear?Geeves2424 (TRZ) Would love to know if any of you have a superstitious “pre-pull” routine.Studfit rephrase: we've seen some reset four times before pulling (FrenzyFans) or wear a gold hat and try to become one with the marioverse (Sammy D of Kart Life) or be as close to the home plumbing as possible with the trademark CTP (Geeves2424), do you have any superstitions when pulling on pipes?MULTIPLAYERIn MP, I see people fly around in random circles. I believe it is obvious they are trying not to be hit, but does it not slow them down? I try this from time to time and I hit something, is there an easy way to do these maneuvers?
