Let us choose good every day and decide what we want more of this year, and what we want less of. Quote: Instructions for Living a Life:Pay Attention.Be Astonished.Tell About It.-Mary Oliver
At age sixteen, Bill German began publishing a Rolling Stones fanzine out of his bedroom in Brooklyn. And when he presented an issue to the band on a street in New York, he obviously made an impression: before he knew it, the Stones had hired him to document their career, inviting him into the studio and to their private jam sessions. He traveled the world with them, stayed at their homes, and, for almost two decades, witnessed their wild parties and nasty feuds. Yet through it all, he never lost his identity as that “nice boy from Brooklyn.”“Under Their Thumb” is a fish-out-of-water tale about a fan who wanted to know everything about his favorite rock group—and suddenly learned too much. Bill German majored in journalism at New York University until he dropped out to follow the Stones. He co-authored “The Works” with guitarist Ron Wood and has written about the group for Rolling Stone and Spin. He lives in New York City. This session is the first of Season #3, A Close Call With Death, providing some personal commentary and a personal close call as this new season gets kicked off. I wanted to first thank all of our listeners from Season 1 and 2 and growing with us through a recovery year of 2021 where we heard from many people with fascinating stories of challenges, struggles, dissappointments, and close calls that caused them to over time, gain strength and growth that made them just a little bit taller and stronger. These stories capture those that gained strength from their experiences and I am one that has benefited and have been extremely blessed by them. The conversations have been powerful and touching and every time I sit down with someone, it becomes like a purging, release, healing and vulnerable session. I am so grateful for the time others have taken to share these stories and I have heard feedback that people are hearing and relating to what they have heard and it is making an impact for good in others lives. This year, there will be some diversity in close calls to include not only those that have experienced a close call but, have been close to others that have nearly died or have died and moved on and what did that impact do to influence their attitude and outlook on what life they have ahead of them. I will be talking with Doctors / Nurses, First Responders, Rangers, Firefighters, Morticians, Athletes, etc. Again, thank you for listening in and sharing these stories. There are those out there that need to hear these stories and could use some inspiration and strength through others. Let's all grow and gain more love and closeness with each other in this new year. Until we hear from each other again, "Stay Alive to Tell About It!" --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message

While more of the world is learning the facts of PPD (postpartum depression) and just how common it actually is, postpartum anxiety (PPA) is additionally considered the most common childbirth complication. Kaila was thrilled to talk with Jess from Only You Podcast this week about PPA; Jess shares what her experience with PPA was like as well as what forms of support helped her the most. Anxiety sprouts up when we feel out of control of our surroundings, choices, thoughts, and feelings and that is basically exactly what happens when you birth a baby and become a parent in charge of a tiny, helpless human bean. Kaila and Jess discuss the ins and outs of anxiety and happily share what they do to *nicely* tell that b*tch to calm down. Let's Tell About It.
In celebration of being parents for a full damn year (and in the middle of a global pandemic, thank you very much), Kaila tells her birth story with the help of the one and only Jimmy. Starting from the moment actual contractions kicked in to the importance of having vomit bags handy post birth, Kaila and Jimmy recount the way the birth of their son all went down. Being able to say that you have kept a tiny human being alive for a whole year is no small feat. Let's Tell About It.
The fact is, it's ultimately not up to the birthing person how a baby is born. And that can be really hard to grapple with, especially when you've been pregnant for almost 10 months and you just want to feel even an ounce of control over something for a minute. This week Kaila talks with friend, Amber, about her birth story and what it was like to have an unexpected C-section. While we always know in the back of our heads that it could happen, most birthing people do not go to the hospital thinking that their birthing plans are about to radically change. Whether it's vaginal or belly birth, one thing remains true: birth is birth and you are a kick ass person for going through it. Let's Tell About It.
Welcome to the first official babysode! Kaila's husband, Jimmy, is back to read stories that listeners sent in about the weird things kids eat, lick, or stick up their nose. Let's Tell About It.
In this episode, Kaila talks with therapist Bryce Reddy about postpartum rage and parental anger. Often an overlooked topic due to the internal shame that comes with feeling like the "angry parent", it's important to know that getting mad does not make you a bad parent, it just makes you human. Let's Tell About It.
Continuing where Part 1 left off, Kaila and Katie further discuss the complicated phase that is postpartum. There will be blood, lots of it, and for a long time. But get yourself some supportive (and noninvasive) people to help you through postpartum and you will make it through to the other side. Let's Tell About It.
The Fourth Trimester is probably one of the best kept secrets of giving birth and bringing a baby into the world; Katie and I are here to spill our guts (quite literally) about what really happens once you bring that sweet bebe angel home. Let's Tell About It.
This week Kaila hosts one of her dearest friends, Melissa, to ponder what it's like being undecided about whether or not to become a parent. What do we think about when we decide to have children? Do we think about it at all? While the decision is instinctual and easy for some, for others it takes contemplation, maybe a few pro/con lists, and even a chapter book here and there. Let's Tell About It.
In Part 2 of our conversation with Dr. Shani Cooper, Kaila and Shani begin to chip away at the Iceberg of birthing while Black In the United States, while briefly touching on bringing home a NICU baby and the ~radical~ notion that having a doula present at every birth should become standard practice. Let's Tell About It.
Show Notes Today my guest is our friend, Terry Hershey and do we have a bold subject today: It called “Instructions for Living.” Don't worry; we're using Instructions taken from another author. Instructions from Terry and me… hmmm. For those of you that are not familiar with Terry Hershey, he is the author of 17 books (with a new one coming out in the Fall), he's a sought after public speaker, and an award winning landscape architect of English Country Gardens. In January of this year, one of America's greatest contemporary poets, Mary Oliver, died. Terry and I plan to chat about a line from the poem “Sometimes” in her latest collection titled Red Bird. The line from the poem is this: “Instructions for Living a Life: Pay Attention, Be Astonished and Tell About It.” So let's bring on Terry Hershey to chat about paying attention, being astonished, and then telling about it. You can reach Terry at www.terryhershey.com For more with Charlie Hedges please visit www.thenextchapter.life
