In 2023, we said goodbye to a service you might not have known was still around — DVD delivery from Netflix, now a giant in streaming. With a collection of more than 100,000 titles available for delivery in those red, paper envelopes, the DVD service retained some utility even years into the company’s transition. But Netflix pulled the plug on the service in September. Marketplace’s Lily Jamali spoke with Slate writer and editor Sam Adams about what we lost with its demise.

Operating systems are necessarily more complex than ever. Still, they must also be simple to use, reliable, and secure, especially the OS that runs digital signage and kiosks for retail or hospitality businesses. This week, Google's Brandy Au and HP's David Gosman join the show to explain the OS progression, trends, and current needs. How are market forces and modern hardware changing operating systems? Thanks for waiting on this week's episode! This week, Sam & Ralph discuss an underappreciated satire of American violence--Series 7: The Contenders (trailer). Filmed as a reality show, this 2001 film follows 6 people who are forced to fight to the death by the fascist American Entertainment Complex. It's also a black comedy! We both really recommend watching Series 7: The Contenders. Especially, if you remember American reality television in the early aughts. The entire movie can be found on YouTube here: MOVIE. This is not our link, so do not get mad at us.We also discuss the incredible work of Scarecrow Video at the top of the episode. If you'd like to take advantage of their new RENTAL BY MAIL program (especially now that Netflix DVD's are dead), you can sign-up here: Scarecrow Video. We highly recommend checking them out, especially if you're in the U.S.Content Warning: the movie and our discussion talk about suicide multiple times. Since this is a dark comedy, we understand if that's not your flavor of conversation.RIYL: Battle Royale, The Hunger Games, The Running Man, Punishment ParkSupport the showClick support the show if you want to support the show!If you like the show, give us a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts or on Spotify Mobile! September is finally offering CatBusRuss the schlocky cinema that inspired the creation of this podcast. You can have your MCU, give Russ gory action and horror movies. Show him what Tony Stark should have looked like after the third Snap. Time was going to made to get to “Expend4bles”. It is gruesome and fun, but creatively gutless. To remedy this and finish out his Netflix DVD subscription, our host watched an actor who did not return to the quadrilogy, Jet Li. This feature was “Unleashed”. And let's acknowledge it now, Bob Hoskins is a stronger baddie than Andy Garcia.

Once upon a time (or let's just say, most episodes) The Guys take the opportunity to reminisce. And with the Netflix DVD service about to send out its last little red envelopes, that seemed like the perfect segue to Robbie quizzing Jay about his semi-recent cutting of the proverbial cords. It's been over a year since he quit getting the little red envelopes in the mail - that was the gateway cut. Then it was his landline; no emergencies so far requiring landlines. And most recently, it was Big Cable getting the boot. Any regrets? Any lessons? Any Netflix DVD's hiding under the old VCR that he'll get to keep? Listen as the last holdout of The Guys tells his tale. Then go watch the Aquaman 2 trailer, or any of the handful of geek-fave TV series or movies that star young Ariana Greenblatt. But don't try to watch them at an MGM hotel - they may not have Wi-Fi restored just yet.
Help NinetyForChill: The #Podcast get away from paywalls by subscribing to "Ninety For Chill: The Podcast with CatBusRuss". "Ninety For Chill: The #Podcast with @CatBusRuss" offers the world the ultimate questionable quadruple feature. If it was between 70 and 100 minutes in length and directed by Ken Russell during the '80s, it is here. CatBusRuss's weekend binge features the body horror classic "Altered States", Russell's reimaginings of 19th century British literature in "Gothic" and "Salome's Last Dance", and Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi battle with a snake vampiress in "The Lair of the White Worm". Weird things happen when our host gets ghosted. Aside from watching Ken Russell's "Altered States" to clear up his Netflix DVD queue before the service ends, CatBusRuss did not have much of a plan for what this week's episode would be about. Presuming that he would have a date on his day off, the best he thought he could do was watch "Lisztomania" to provide the audience with the entire range of craziness the director of "Tommy" had to offer. And then, no response from the lass he had been chatting up through her bout with Covid. Add into the equation that the phallic ode to an early 20th century German composer was not streaming anywhere for free. Russ's response to these difficulties, lets watch all of the '80s Russell that meet the criteria of the podcast.

Help NinetyForChill: The #Podcast get away from paywalls by subscribing to "Ninety For Chill: The Podcast with CatBusRuss". CatBusRuss is doing his best to overcome exhaustion. Fan Expo Chicago calls for exploration means there was no time for relaxation. Our host has worked himself sick, so he felt lucky to get in three movies since returning from Rosemont. And after starting the week with his Netflix DVD rental, "Another Earth", getting up the energy to watch 1979's "The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe" and 2022's "Thor: Love and Thunder" should be considered an accomplishment. These three movies are all worthwhile. "Another Earth" is science fiction that challenges the genre's demand for visual effects. The adaptation of the first "Chronicle of Narnia" is an interesting attempt to sneak Christianity into schools. And while avoiding films in the franchise that are based around a new characters, Russ has enjoyed diving into Phase 4 of the MCU. But all of these features present challenges to enjoy them. There is a very dour premise with the indie film. The cartoon features questionable character designs that make you wonder why they did not stick to their "Charlie Brown" style. And you can see why there are three credited editors on the Marvel movie. It is definitely going to be a one flick movie this week for the CatBus. His strength must be regained.

Just a quick reminder to pick up tickets for Across the Movie Aisle live at the Alamo Drafthouse in Crystal City on Tuesday, May 16, where we're presenting the Matthew Broderick classic WarGames. There are only 20 tickets or so left, but I've got good news: they're the best seats in the house! The front row! You'll be very close to Alyssa, Peter, and me as we do the show! Can't ask for more than that. This week, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason) lament the end of Netflix DVD. It was a golden age of exploration for budding cinephiles, and streaming still can't quite match its breadth. Then the gang does something a little different: with the multiplex back to something approaching full power, there are too many movies to discuss! So we each grabbed a new (or newish) release to talk about. Alyssa's handling The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Peter got Beau Is Afraid, and Sonny took on Evil Dead Rise. Make sure to swing by Bulwark+ on Friday for our bonus episode about the xennial relationship to social media. And if you enjoyed the episode share it with a friend!

Panic in Leafs land. Uploading our consciousness to the cloud. The end of Netflix DVD's. New car features that confuse us. And are we really productive when working remotely?
While most celebrate the New Year with libations and giant balls, CoolMoviesDarth was binging features with reputations that are less than savory. Inspired to get to his next Netflix DVD and kick off the latest series of movies for Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy's Trash Feature Reviews, our host tackles a pre-fame/infamy Amber Heard video from 2004, "SideFX", and Charlize Theron's first attempt at neo-femme fatale, "Aeon Flux (2005)".
Sometimes The Guys have to really reach to come up with Geeks of the Week (see Jay reaching back to 1990's Popular Science issues or announcing new movies advertised on ancient Netflix DVD's). Other times, there's so many to choose from it's hard to pick just one. This week's episode is all geeks, and we're not just talking about The Guys. The ever-popular-in-Bavaria Geeks of the Week segment transmogrifies into the main subject, and some of Jay's breaking news items are truly current. Or they were on the day it was recorded. From a new Fantastic Four theory to an accidental international announcement of a possible Grogu short film, from Sandman part the second to multiple bits of news from Cavill headquarters - even the Broadway debut of Marty and Doc's musical version of a classic film (not to be confused with Art and Jay's attempt to join the cast of Les Mis). This episode has it all - don't miss a thing or you will miss things.

Wherefore art thou, Art? It seems it's once again Art's turn to take a break from the rigorous Guys of a Certain Age recording schedule, and Jay sort of takes over the show. Finally, the cord has been cut on Jay's Netflix DVD plan and the Twitterverse went nuts. (It was about something else, but seriously - it's nuts on there.) To mark the occasion, he shares the last half dozen DVDs watched via Netflix - perhaps the last DVDs ever watched … period. Then it's catch-up time. Jay was intrigued by the recent discussion on a Jay-less episode about Christmas lists, cheap thrills, guilty pleasures (and we're still talking about gifts, people) and wanted to put in his two cents. For the Guys' listeners in jolly old England, Jay suggests a play in the West End involving a broken shark and three slightly inebriated actors. Robbie stays closer to home, with the announcement of two new series coming to HBO Max. There are far less sound effects on this episode, but the milestones abound. Don't miss it.

David-Matthew Barnes is an award-winning author, playwright, poet, and screenwriter. He writes in multiple genres, primarily young adult, romance, thriller, and horror. He is the bestselling author of twelve novels, five produced screenplays, three collections of poetry, seven short stories, and more than sixty stage plays. In addition to his career as a writer, David-Matthew has earned more than two decades of professional experience in marketing and communications, primarily as a director and as a senior-level copywriter. He has created original and impactful marketing materials for many high-profile clients including Jaguar, Land Rover, Motorola, and Porsche. Currently, he is the Director of Marketing and Communications at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, Colorado, where he was honoured with a Diversity and Inclusion Service Award.Born in Torrance, California, David-Matthew is the eldest son of Sam Barnes, Jr., a former police officer originally from Jonesboro, Louisiana, and Nancy Nickle, the former owner of a hip-hop record label originally from Los Angeles. He has four younger brothers. He is the eldest grandson of the late Clifford Nickle, who was a prominent business owner in the Redondo Beach area of California. David-Matthew has a considerable family history in Canada, as his relatives are the founders of the Nickle Galleries at the University of Calgary. Entertainers have been prominent in David-Matthew's family for many generations. His great-aunt was actress Ann Paige, who appeared in the films China Doll and The Young Lions with co-stars Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando, Dean Martin, and Hope Lange. David-Matthew fell in love with writing at the early age of 7, when his second-grade teacher recognized his storytelling talents after he wrote a Halloween-themed story titled The Blue Witch. Thanks to his sixth-grade drama teacher, who saw playwriting potential in him, Barnes' first play was produced when he was only 11. The script was a tribute to soap operas titled Life Isn't Easy. By the age of 13, David-Matthew was writing plays and short stories on a second-hand typewriter. David-Matthew credits meeting young adult author Norma Fox Mazer (who was a visiting author at his junior high school) as the defining moment when he knew he would become a writer. As a teenager, David-Matthew lived primarily in Northern California, where he attended the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VAPAC) at Sacramento High School and later Berkeley High School, where classmates included actress and model Rebecca Romijn and music video director Dave Meyers. In high school, David-Matthew found a love for cheerleading, which would become a part of his life for over a decade. At the age of 15, David-Matthew became a regular on the television series Dance Floor '86, which he appeared on for one year. That same year he published his first short story, a dramatic tale of five teenagers surviving the aftermath of a nuclear war titled The Children Are Crying, featured in the anthology Across the Generations. He has been a professional writer since. David-Matthew wrote and directed the coming-of-age indie film Frozen Stars (starring Lana Parrilla of ABC's Once Upon a Time), which received worldwide distribution and is available via Netflix DVD. The film was recognized for featuring a predominantly Latino cast. As a result, the film was the subject of international press coverage and received a world premiere screening at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles.David-Matthew then directed an independent documentary called Why So Fly? which offered a backstage look at the all-female hip-hop trio Northern State. At the beginning, all of their money is funneled into product and market development. When do they need a CISO, if at all? Check out this post for the basis for our conversation on this week’s episode which features me, David Spark (@dspark), producer of CISO Series, and guest co-host Jimmy Sanders (@jfireluv), head of cybersecurity for Netflix DVD and our guest is Bryan Zimmer (@bryanzimmer), head of security for Humu. Thanks to our podcast sponsor, Lepide Ninety eight percent of all threats start with Active Directory and nearly always involve the compromise of data stored on enterprise data stores. Lepide’s unique combination of detailed auditing, anomaly detection, real time alerting, and real time data discovery and classification allows you to identify, prioritize and investigate threats – fast. In this episode: Should a company get a CISO right away, or wait until the security program matures? If they get a CISO should they go for "on-prem" or on-demand? Or.... should they just go and seek CISO-level advice from the security community?
In the studio today is Jimmy Sanders, a mentor, technician and all-around leader. Jimmy is the head of information security at Netflix DVD where he secures data and systems from cyber threat while building resilient compliance programs across technology, financial services, and healthcare organizations. Jimmy is here to talk about what we are worth in technology and cyber security. He is always full of advice and knowledge and is always promoting positive change in our community. To start this podcast, Jimmy shares a little about his background and how he came to the role he is in now for Netflix. Along with his career background, he shares all the organizations he is involved with. Jimmy talks briefly about what happened to him that encouraged him to go 120% and then some in this career choice. He didn’t find his passion in technology until 12 years after graduating college. You will hear how the possibility of never walking again affected his work ethic. Allan and Jimmy talk at length about those 12-years where Jimmy was stumbling, bouncing from college to college, to flunking out of college. It took those years for him to discover how the absence of passion can truly feel. The show closes discussing knowing how to recognize opportunities and taking them. In addition, they talk about how important it is to know your worth, recognize your value and that everything in life or work is negotiable. You will only be better than your job description if you make it that way. It’s not The Guys’ fault that the world’s screenshape is continually changing, thus requiring yet another discussion about cord-cutting. This time, though, even Jay might be bringing out his scissors - not to cut up his DVD’s like a bad credit card, but to spend those monthly dineros on something else equally watchable. Meanwhile, Robbie seems to have finally come to the point of disconnecting his satellite (and the bill that comes with it). Art, of course, left the world of cable TV many moons ago, with no regrets so far. The big questions: Will Jay actually give up his Netflix DVD subscription, and will Netflix survive if he does? Will Robbie succumb to a last minute sweet deal from his satellite TV provider? And will Art lobby for the return of DC Universe? Are five streaming services too many or just right? These and many more questions will be discussed but probably not answered. Remember: The cord you cut could be your own.
All links and images for this episode can be found on CISO Series https://cisoseries.com/i-think-possibly-maybe-weve-solved-diversity-in-cybersecurity/ We're tired of hearing "we're trying" when it comes to the subject of how companies are trying to inject diversity into their organizations. It's a lopsided game and diverse candidates have to make ten times the number of attempts as their non-diverse counterparts. This episode is hosted by me, David Spark (@dspark), producer of CISO Series and guest co-host Jimmy Sanders (@jfireluv), cybersecurity, Netflix DVD. Our guest this week is Jerich Beason (@blanketSec), svp, CISO, Epiq. Thanks to our podcast sponsor, Living Security Traditional approaches to security communication are limited to one-off training sessions that fail to take customers, regulators, and other external stakeholders into account and rarely affect long-term behavioral change. This report lays out a four-step plan that CISOs should follow to manage the human risk. It provides design principles for creating transformational security awareness initiatives which will win the hearts and minds of senior executives, employees, the technology organization, and customers. On this week's episode How have you actually pulled this off? As discussed before on this show, being the next CISO at a company that was recently breached can be very lucrative. We've had guests that have very successfully negotiated huge salaries as the post-breach CISO. Are CISOs setting themselves up for far too much responsibility to be seen as a the company's digital savior? What are the responsibilities of a post breach CISO? Got a better answer than "we're trying?" Over the years we have interviewed dozens of business owners, security professionals, and hiring managers about diversity. Almost all their answers fall into the following buckets: We're trying but there's no pipeline. We're working with XXX group to improve. Diversity is needed because diversity of thought it needed to create a more secure organization. No one will admittedly say they're against diversity. Yet systemic racism, sexism, or just boys' clubism in general continues to exist. It appears most of the non-diverse business leaders are being pressured into admitting it's a problem. So they do it, and we even get token hires, but it all comes off as diversity theater and not the business actually making a shift. What is the story of diversity in cybersecurity many people don't get and need to actually be doing, not just giving lip service to? "What's Worse?!" Eugene Kogan, CSO at a confidential company sets it up: Who do you want on our side: executives or employees? And now a listener drops knowledge "Learn cybersecurity in public," suggests AJ Yawn of ByteChek who recommends joining a training program and then publishing what you've learned on a blog. As AJ explains, "Doing this will help you build relationships & prove to potential employers you’re applying your new knowledge." He concludes with the advice, "Don’t learn in silence." The community responded to AJ's advice. It's great advice, which everyone agreed to in the comments, but why then do so few people actually do it? There’s got to be a better way to handle this Zero trust is not a technology that can be purchases as a solution. It's an architecture, methodology, and framework that you have to consciously adopt, noted Stephen Lyons of F5 on a post on LinkedIn. Can solutions already in-house be rejiggered to adopt a zero trust methodology? And if so, what changes would need to be made to existing systems to have a more zero trust environment?

Mike also discusses the latest on baseball's 2020 negotiations (1:35) and is joined by the podcast's film critic Jon Stanko to recap the finale of The Last Dance (34:38) and talk movies as they re-arrange Mike's Netflix DVD queue (1:22:55) on this week's show.
Just because the Guys can’t be in the same room together during stay-at-home orders, doesn’t mean they still can’t ramble on for half an hour anyway. Thank you, technology. And this week they give their takes on a handful of technological breakthroughs that have now, essentially, put on the brakes. From lightsaber apps, to aux cords connected to cassette tape adapters, to Billy Bass, to Netflix DVD’s (hey…wait a minute…), the Guys reminisce about gadgets and such that were at one point essential “personnel” but have since been sent home. When it comes to Geeks of the Week, Robbie says it’s hip to be Square, Jay’s still playing with high-end legos, and Art is ready to join (or at least watch) the Space Force. Call the delivery guy, grab a donut chicken sandwich, and listen.
The Star Wars trilogy of trilogies may be complete, and current faves such as Jack Ryan and the Mandalorian may not be back till the fall, but that doesn't mean our screens won't be busy in 2020. In this episode the Guys look forward to all sorts of cinematic wonders in the year to come. Marvel? Eternally covered. DC? It's a Wonder-ful world. Bond? Finally. Maverick is back, with Kenny in tow. Even the Ghostbusters return from the dead. And that doesn't even include all the streaming series that Art and Robbie think Jay needs to watch just to catch up. (Be sure to listen for the shocking revelation that even with an extended Disney+ subscription, Jay may still be the lone Netflix DVD customer.)

What we’ve got here is failure to communicate Is the privacy message getting out to the right people? I argue we need to go to the source and we're not. I was at Dreamforce, the Salesforce conference, and I got the sense I was the only person of the 100K people there that didn't want to be scanned. This crowd is obsessed with the collection of personal data given this conference is mostly about how do I create greater understanding from personal data. Are we as security people in a bubble in this privacy conversation? We need to go to the source of the people who are actually collecting the data and I'm getting the sense we're not getting through. Are we making the situation better or worse? We've talked a lot about AI on this show, and many vendors are selling intelligent solutions, but the factor that seems to hang up usage is trust. Cyber professionals don't think twice about trusting their AI-powered spam filter, but so many other tools are met with skepticism. What's missing from the vendor side and what trust barriers are practitioners putting up? What should the barometers be for trusting AI? What's Worse?! Two bad types of people wanting to do you harm. Which one is worse? Is this the best solution? Should you hire staff from companies that have fallen victim to cybercrime? According to a study by Symantec and Goldsmiths, University of London, as reported by ZDNet, more than half of respondents said they don't discuss breaches or attacks with peers. And more than a third said they fear that sharing breach information on their organization would negatively impact their future career prospects. I would think that asking a prospect, "Have you lived through a breach and how did you handle it?" would be very revealing. Mike? Joel Boggess - Podcaster, Coach, #1 Best Selling Author About Joel Boggess Joel Boggess’ broadcasting career began in the early 90’s – behind the mic in traditional radio, on camera as a reporter, and in the master control room as an Assistant Producer. Today, he is a #1 bestselling author, a front-runner in the world of podcasting and new media, and is one-half of the broadcast team behind the creation, development and explosive growth of ReLaunch. Within 12 days of the podcast’s initial blast off, it soared up the iTunes charts. It nailed #1 in business, education, and in health respectively in New and Noteworthy. His latest book, Finding your Voice, hit the #1 spot on Amazon in three categories - success, self esteem, and happiness; on the same day, in the same hour. Joel has mastered the art and science of how to develop and execute a podcast launch and growth plan, as well as how to mobilize listeners. His global audience has grown 10-fold in twelve month’s time and he has earned numerous podcast awards including Best Overall and Most Inspirational podcast for ReLaunch - Become Known in Your Niche. A couple of the points that Joel discussed that I find inspiring are: The concept and phrase "Consistent Persistence". You have to continue to persist when you are working on your goals. It ties into the Best Advice Received, below. The other is "Personal Accountability". I asked Joel about the subject of Mentoring and Mastermind groups, both services that Joel provides to those that want it. But, as he states, there really has to be personal accountability to be able to achieve goals. You have to be able to be accountable to yourself. Joel uses the mantra of #ResultsOnly #NoExcuses to help us think about how we should have personal accountability. Best Advice Received: Best Advice I've Received is "To not quit, don't quit." Joel Boggess Joel discusses the inspiration that the movie, "Facing The Giants" has about not quitting. The coach in the story motivates a football player by having him do bear crawls blindfolded. Why blindfolded?, you ask. Watch the movie. It's available on Netflix DVD.
