    Episode #100

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2022 35:51

This is Ambers 100th podcast episode and the topic was formed from a PTSD flashback she had the night before recording.  Amber uses PTSD and CPTSD interchangeably, but there is a difference. The main difference between the two is PTSD usually occurs after a single traumatic event, while CPTSD is associated with repeated trauma. Amber has CPTSD.  In this episode Amber shares her experience with PTSD and the lessons learned from this latest flashback - her first one in almost a year.  One of her biggest lessons this time was how PTSD has affected her relationship with food and her struggles with maintaining a healthy weight. Amber talks a little bit about EMDR experience in which she calls a miracle treatment for trauma. If you're unfamiliar with what EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is, it's a psychotherapy treatment that enables you to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that come with trauma. Here's an EMDR website that describes it. www.emdr.com/what-is-emdr Here's the link to the NIH study and article she mentioned: The Weight of Traumatic Stress: A Prospective Study of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms and Weight Status in Women. If you'd like to do your own research, just Google "weight gain and PTSD", or "weight gain and trauma". There are a ton of studies and theories. Most come down to healing the pain that the trauma (or traumas) created and stored in your mind and body. It can't be buried, ignored, or swept under the rug. That pain will surface in all kinds of ways and will create things in your mind and your body that will hold you back in life. It may not hold you back completely, but it will prevent you from living a fully experienced life.  Excess weight and the (seemingly) impossibility of losing it may not be how unhealed trauma shows up for you, instead it may be one of the following.... Anxiety or panic attacks that occur in what would be considered normal situations A feeling of shame; an innate feeling that you are bad, worthless, or without importance Suffering from chronic or ongoing depression Practicing avoidance of people, places, or things that may be related to the traumatic event; this also can include an avoidance of unpleasant emotions Flashbacks, nightmares, and body memories regarding the traumatic event Addiction and eating disorders in an attempt to escape or numb negative emotions Sleeping issues, including trouble going to sleep or staying asleep Suffering from feelings of detachment, or feeling "dead inside" Dissociation to disconnect in situations and conversations Hypervigilance - a constant feeling of being on guard Suicidal thoughts or actions Uncontrollable anger Self-harm, cutting, and mutilation Not being able to tolerate conflicts Unexplained or irrational fears of people, places, or things Amber has personally experienced 14 of these at different times in her life and along her healing journey. And, now today, due to her deep healing work, out of that 14, she only still experience 5 of them on occasion. If she can do it, so can you! So now it's your turn for some self reflection. Get yourself a piece of paper or your journal, write down the following questions, and answer them. If you're working with a professional healer, coach, or therapist, you're highly encouraged to share the answers with them.  Do you recognize any of the symptoms or experiences in that list of 15 above in yourself? Where are you stuck in life - what area(s)? Health, Career, Relationships, or general Fulfillment? Be specific! What kind of support do you need? From what or who? What does that look like? Have you found tools that help you? If so, what are they and why aren't you using them? If you are using them, why aren't they working? How do you celebrate your wins? Is it something that you feel benefits you - like if it effects your health negatively, you might want to find another way to celebrate? Why do you start treatments/programs/plans meant to benefit you mentally or physically and not finish them? What do you think is holding you back from living your best life? What can you do to change or eliminate those things all together? Really give this one a hard think. Where have you found the most success so far in your healing journey? Who inspires you the most on your healing journey? Follow that person. Read their books or publications. Listen to them. Watch them. Learn all you can about them. But, please for you're health, don't put them on a pedestal or make them your guru. Learn from them. What are the top 3 things you have done to help yourself? What is one thing you would say to someone you love who feels the way you feel about yourself and your life when you're feeling low?  Now say that last one to yourself! Maybe even turn it into a mantra. Put it on your mirror. Say it every day.  You are worthy and you deserve to live a joyful, peaceful, full, healthy life!  Self-awareness is so huge when it comes to helping you get there! So, why not take some more time for yourself and answer these questions? Then re-commit to becoming more self-aware and getting to the bottom of what's holding you back!  What happened to us in the past doesn't have to have a big negative impact on our present and our future. True healing is possible for all of us.  In this episode shares an exciting update about her current offerings too! Ambers guest today is Rachel West, and this is her 2nd time being on the podcast. Rachel is a Holistic Personal Growth Coach, Best Selling Author and the Founder of "Empowering Growth". She is also a Domestic Violence Victims Advocate and Community Health Worker.  Rachel focuses on helping others with mindset improvement and their mental health with a specialty in addiction. She has a belief that you must do the inner work, if you ever want the outer to work; and understands first hand how releasing negative mental, emotional and behavioral programming helps you feel, hear and see new possibilities simply by shifting your thoughts so that you can achieve the results you dream of at a much higher level.  One of her favorite quotes is from Stacey O'Byrne, "Choice is a powerful thing, suffering is always optional".  Sometimes in our lives horrible things do happen, tragedies, traumatic experiences - things that are truly not our fault, and sometimes things that we don't have actual recognition of because they happened to us as children...or even to our ancestors. Those things/events have the potential to wreck havoc in our lives when just left to run amok in our subconscious.  If left buried and untreated, they can lead to mental health challenges as well as addiction. In this episode, that's what the focus is - the buried emotions, the untruths we tell ourselves, and the programming...the roots of the problem. Then Rachel shares some ways to heal those things in your life and how to help others. Because, suffering is optional. We can all choose to start our healing journey or not.  So, even if you haven't been touched by addiction in your family like Rachel and Amber have, this episode is one you need to hear...if not for you, for someone you care about. Then go share it with them! There's also a really easy self-awareness tool buried within their conversation that you can start using today.  All the ways you can connect with Rachel are listed below. This is Susan's 2nd time on the podcast, because Amber really enjoys chatting with her, and she's a listener favorite.  Susan is a transformational life coach whose focus is on helping others who are emerging from life-altering adversities. She guides them to evaluate the insights and wisdom that these times hold. She believes our dark moments hold amazing "gems" which we can use to elevate our lives. Susan is a cancer survivor, which seems to be a part of a many of Ambers guests stories lately. She doesn't specifically seek out conversations with cancer warriors. But, it's understandable why they would be the people who use their stories to then help others. Cancer is big and scary and even if we ourselves don't get it, we're bound to be touched by it through others at some point in our lives.  Susan, like many of Ambers guests who have overcome some big obstacles, draws upon her personal journey as well as her professional training to help others. Susan's specialty is teaching mindset and tools to help us rebuild our lives in alignment with our deepest desires. Susan is also the author of the upcoming book, "Pulling the Gems from Adversity", which they'll talk about a little towards the end. In today's episode Amber and her guest, Marina Yanay-Triner, will be talking about trauma and the body again...because honestly, there's always things we can learn about it. We all have experienced some sort of trauma and that trauma likes to hide out in our bodies.  Marina calls herself the compassionate somatic coach. Her passion is helping people who are disengaged with life, burnt out and checked out by using body-based somatic approaches to support a connection back to the body; strengthen their connection with their instincts and intuition, and flourish!  This is similar to what Laura Rowe, from episode 3 of this season, titled "Embodiment" talked about, AND also different. Both of their messages are so fascinating and important! As a trauma-informed coach, Marina works with clients to go deep into the roots of behavioral patterns that hold you back from experiencing life to its fullest. She helps you look at and explore childhood-rooted beliefs, emotions, behavioral patterns, and the unconscious so you can experience life with more joy and aliveness.  In this episode Marina explains what "trauma informed" means and how working with a professional who is trauma informed is really important. She also explains why the pandemic is so triggering for so many of us! Along with some very helpful tips to help you on your overall healing journey, she shares a very easy, yet powerful method to settle your nervous system next time you're feeling anxious. If you're looking for more, she has a ton of free resources on her website.  Amber highly recommends working with her or any practitioner who specializes in somatic work, especially if you're finding that talk therapy or other methods just aren't getting to the heart of your struggles.  If this all resonates with you, please share with your people. He has a very interesting life story with many twists and turns, but the one that stands out the most may have been when he walked away from an opportunity to run a billion dollar business. BILLION!!! He chose to hitchhike around the world to find happiness and inner peace instead.  Daniels travels took him to a country where he studied in a seminary for five years (but then left one day before becoming a Rabbi). Then when he came back to the United States, he joined a yoga community, which led him to his life as a Monk in a monastery for 10 years. And, those are just two examples!  It seems this guy has lived a hundred lives already! He was once even the Director of Business Development at Hay House bringing them from $3,000,000 a year in sales to $100,000,000 a year in revenue. Now his focus is helping other to "learn how to see what they can't see".  He is the author of The Mosaic, a life changing fable that invites people to listen to those others do not hear and to see the situations in their life differently.  Daniel is truly a rare gem in this crazy world. "The stories we can tell ourselves are way worse than what's actually happening..." Heather Phillips is a long time friend of Ambers. They're friendship blossomed through shared struggle starting almost 10 years ago...and lasting up until just a couple years ago. They endured major momma heartache together on an almost daily basis, while watching their two teenage sons go down some very bad paths together...and separately. During that time, they learned a lot about each other and themselves as mothers and helpers.  Heather is recently an empty nester trying to figure out her own "new normal". In this episode you get to listen in on them picking up where they left off before everything was shut down in March of 2020. Heather was the last person Amber had a coffee date with before all our lives changed in an instant.  Over this last 18 months, like many of us, Heather has made some huge changes in her life...with weight loss surgery top of the list. She has struggled with her weight most of her life, but in spite of her size, she continued to pursue her love of fitness. She even created a platform for showing bigger bodies that they belong in the fitness world! Heather has been an inspiration to Amber and so many others over the years...even when she wasn't feeling inspiring. In fact, in this episode you'll learn a little bit about her mental health challenges and how she's working to overcome them. And, now she says, she does truly love herself...and her life.  Can you say that about you and your life?  After listening, we highly recommend you follow Heather on Instagram @fitnessinthebigworld.

As far as the pandemic goes, things are starting to look up. People are coming back out into the light...with longer hair, and the Covid 15. People seem more hopeful and excited for the future, but at the same time, we're shell shocked. It feels a little like what I would imagine coming out of a bomb shelter after a war would feel like. We've got a lot of healing to do!  Everyone's level of hard was different this last year plus, but we've all been through some hard stuff. Even if it was just having to watch other peoples suffering. There is a level of trauma we've all experienced in one way or another.  So, it's fitting to bring back an episode titled Healing Trauma, from Ambers old podcast The Holistic Healing Connection. Before she rebranded and changed the focus.  Her guest, Tabatha Bird Weaver blends talk therapy methods, energy healing and chakra work for a total holistic healthcare experience. Rachel West said something during this conversation that we know will resonate with many of you. She said, "The #1 person we lie to the most is ourselves, so just be honest with yourself!".  Sounds easy, right!?!? But for many people it's not. Lies to stay in relationships, whether friends, romantic or even family. Lies about choices that are bad for your health...one more cupcake isn't gonna hurt?!?!  Have you told yourself and others that you're "OK" when you're really NOT "OK"?  We don't know why people do this, but I bet it's some kind of avoidance technique. It's a way of not having to look at the stuff outside of our comfort zone.  But, that's exactly how we move forward....heal...and live happy, fulfilling, successful lives. We must face our stuff, learn self awareness, and step out of our comfort zones.  And, that's what Rachel and Amber are talking about today... Rachel is a Personal Growth Coach, Breakthrough Expert, Speaker and Author of "The Successful Woman’s Mindset: Unlock The Secrets of Success, Activate Your Power".  Rachel grew up surrounded by people with addiction and mental illness and her own diagnosis of a learning disability, which really held her back in life. "Your body will lead you to health and wellbeing" For three decades, Ilene struggled with Body image, weight, and her relationship with food.  During a big chunk of that time, she also practiced as a clinical social worker, working primarily with women who were struggling with issues similar to hers. They came to her with feelings of depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, and unresolved traumas. They  hoped that if they could change their bodies, all of these things would magically disappear or at least become less significant. In her own words, she says, "they were wrong - and so was I"! Ilene embraced what is now called intuitive eating - or the belief in the body's innate wisdom. She made a commitment to her own self-care, and shifted to focusing on health and wellbeing rather than the size of her body.  She quit dieting, embraced intuitive eating, and developed a program to help other women find their innate body wisdom and their path to body freedom.
