Grief and loss are a part of life, yet death and the wash of feelings and change that comes with it simply isn't sexy to talk about. When we do explore grief, it if often cushioned around trying to make things “fine”. Alison Pena coins herself a “Bad Widow”. Her husband died in her arms at home after their shared journey through his Pancreatic Cancer. The result was her very real experience of coming to terms around external expectations of what it meant to be a “good widow” and that she was, in fact, going to need to be a bad widow for her own journey of healing. She shares her critical 5 R's to moving through this grief and navigating a path forward” with a new definition of being: reconnection, reengagement, reinvention, rebuilding and resetting. If you have experienced loss, in any way, you will understand that the path forward isn't linear, but that it is a process of stepping in with intention every day! About Alison Pena: Alison Pena is a Global Speaker, Grief Resilience Coach & Bestselling Author who helps clients develop clear strategies to reconnect, re-engage, reinvent, rebuild and reset essential relationships disrupted by grief. She calls herself “Bad Widow” because after her husband passed away in 2016, people were continually telling her how to be, how to act, what to feel etc. She took a “rebel” stance deciding to become her own self. Having learned to grieve on her own terms, she now helps people through the various stages of their own grief to feel stronger and more able to take on what lies ahead. What We Discuss In This Episode: Alison shares her own story of how to deal with grief and move through life on your own terms. She shares how people react so differently through this process, and yet it's a process we'll all have to face, one way or another, during our lifetime. In moving through grief, we need to reconnect with self, reinvent ourselves, and rebuild our networks. People experience all of these when grieving but, of course, grief is very personal and universal. We all grieve in our own way and in our own time. People are often driven away as friends, acquaintances, and family members go through their own process of grief, because many times, people don't know how to respond to the person who's grieving. Alison shares not only her own experiences but also gives us some tips on how we can best help friends and family through times of grieving and be the best support and help possible to them during this very difficult period. Alison gives us hope and encouragement as she shares her own experiences and her own outcomes. Let's think "Bad widow". It's a topic that covers the stigma of "the right way" of dealing with life after death. And how Allison handled her husband's death in a way that not many would approve of.
Ep 061: A few months back, one of our clients that we work with in our practice lost her husband after sudden cognitive decline. It was terrible, but also now, she, the spouse has been completely lost. She is trying to figure out her place in the world and has expressed to us that taking on everything her husband did is leaving her continually overwhelmed. She's questioned, how is it possible to find out who she is without her husband? The majority of her adult life has been made up of being in this relationship with someone she loves more than anything. So how common is this occurrence of losing our spouse? According to US Census numbers, 40% of women and 13% of men aged 65 or older have lost their spouses. Our next guest is a lifelong New Yorker and entrepreneur who loves music, art, travel, and adventures. Her husband, David, and she were together 25 years, married for 20 of them. On October 12th, 2015, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer – life expectancy, 6 weeks to 4 months. Together, they learned to live fearlessly in the face of death itself. Saturday, September 10th, 2016, without pain or fear, David took his last four breaths, and she was a widow. What did it mean to be a widow, though? It's impossible to prepare for such a loss. She was isolated and lonely but could not find resources to solve how to reconnect, get back to work and open up to love again - so she created them. She began BadWidow.com and it resonated with people who had suffered a loss too. Our guest is now a grief resilience coach, #1 bestselling author on Amazon, global speaker, and Affluence Code® consultant. Her recently published #1 bestselling book, The Bad Widow Guide to Life After Loss: Moving Through Grief to Live and Love Again is now available on Amazon, and she also has a free 3-video mini-series supplement to her book and ongoing grief resilience tips. This episodes guest, Alison Pena, calls herself The Bad Widow and in her conversation with Amber she dropped tons of wisdom about grief, healing, self-care, resilience and even dating. She even shares an original poem she wrote about her experience with online dating! For anyone who's done the online dating thing, or planning to (or not planning to)....it's very relatable. We may not all be dealing with the death of a loved one, but there's a collective grief running rampant right now...in the world. Because of that, you're gonna get a ton of value from this episode. Her three step approach to reclaiming your life after loss is straightforward and very uncomplicated. When you're ready, give it a try! This is Episode 70 of the VulnerABLE Podcast! When the sudden passing of her husband happened, instead of help and support she was told she was grieving the "wrong" way. Now as the Bad Widow, she's helping others grieve their loss in a better way! She grew up with 3 younger brothers, one of which had a genetic disease which meant they needed to be careful around him even though they weren’t sure why. Then when she was 25 years old her brother would pass away, and she was left feeling a bit lost because for many years the attention was on him. It caused her to begin looking at the world and life a different way, which kind of isolated her from her peers. At the same time it caused her to be empathetic towards others at a very early age. Years later her husband of almost 20 years would be diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. The end of his life was approaching suddenly, this forced them to begin taking chances, and live life as fully as possible until he was gone. Then after his passing she found the grieving process very difficult and was surprised to find very little support or information on how to process what she was going through. She was told she was doing things wrong, and she gave herself the name Bad Widow. Now she’s using her experience and things she learned in the process to help others grieve difficult loses in their own lives. Today, my guest is Alison Pena (aka. Bad Widow). During the episode, Alison describes how she and her husband Dave did some "bucket list" activities before his passing as well as her last moments with Dave and honestly, I get a little choked up at how powerful it is. "We all at one point are going to face circumstances that will break us. It can be the death of someone dear to us, financial disability, heartache, or even health problems. But these circumstances don't determine who you are, but how you respond to them. It's what you do next that matters. Plan, Do, Adjust." — Alison Pena

Today's guest joining us on the Join Up Dots podcast interview is Alison Pena, a lady who ever since she was 15 years old has been fascinated with how money and affluence has so much to do with our view of what's possible. In her own words she says "My dad was a 3rd generation Wall Street investment banker. My great-grandfather was one of White Weld & Co's founders. We lived in an apartment on Park Avenue. The family firm was sold to Merrill Lynch in 1978. We regularly hosted influential financial and world leaders for dinner parties and social gatherings. I attended a well-heeled private all girls' school, as you do when you're part of that world. But when I was 15, I began regularly leaving my white, wealthy, privileged world… and setting off on what can only be described of as “expeditions.” Back then, it meant heading north of 96th Street (the northernmost boundary of my known world) into Harlem. Until that point, my world was Park Avenue and bankers, Latin and piano lessons, nannies and au pairs. And then I started making friends who showed me a whole other world. I came from a world where anything was possible, because there was plenty of money. I could have any career. I could go to any school. I could shape my life into whatever I chose. In contrast, my friends had different expectations. Different obligations. Different ideas about security. Different opportunities. And a lot of that had to do with money. This observation got me wondering… Why does money have so much to do with our view of what's possible? So I suppose the question is, does money have as much to do with confidence and mindset, or is it just a tool for making ideas happen? Is it the key to attracting more money into our lives, not because of it directly, but because we can make things happen and go after it? Well let's bring onto the show to start joining up dots, as we discuss the words of Steve Jobs with the one and only Alison Pena
