Today I'm talking to Ronni Robinson, eating disorder recovery coach, author, free-lance writer and public speaker. Ronni has 16 years recovered from 30 years of binge eating and compulsive eating, starting at the tender age of 9 years old. Ronni also experienced an 8-year abusive relationship whilst struggling with an eating disorder. She has written a book about the entire journey called, Out of the Pantry: A Disordered Eating Journey, which came out in 2020. The book's purpose is to help support her own recovery going forward, and to act as a helping hand to reach, as she calls it, back into the "fire" and to help pull others out. Ronni was on the podcast back in February 2023, telling her story and the journey she has been on to being a recovery coach today. Do go back and listen to this episode if you'd like to. There's lots of personal sharing about her journey and it's an inspiring story about what's possible in recovery. The link for that episode is in the show notes. Today, we're going to dive into what really helped Ronni in recovery. Ronni is going to talk about her process in recovering from binge eating and compulsive eating. She is going to share skills and strategies that will give you a deep insight into what is involved in healing a relationship with food and yourself. I hope that you enjoy the conversation. CW: Talk about eating disorders, bulimia, binge eating disorder, restricted eating, purgingI'm so glad to be back in front of the microphone with you all because I recorded so many episodes before going on an African vacation that I feel I haven't reached out in a very long time! It feels good to connect again. I had a wonderful trip and you'll hear a little more about it in this episode. My guest today is Helen Bennett. She's a certified health and addiction recovery coach who specializes in helping people break free from compulsive eating and is the founder of BulimiaFreedom.com. Helen and I have just an amazing, honest, beautiful conversation about disordered eating, sharing stories from both our journeys. Helen truly understands the guilt and shame feelings as well as the challenges that come with an eating disorder and how a peaceful relationship with food can be reclaimed. This is a tough subject, and triggering, so if this is a trigger for you please practice self-care as you listen.Helen shares her personal experience with bulimia, detailing how she started the cycle of binging and purging at the young age of eight and why. It led her to what she calls “a 20-year, nightmarish battle of being caught in this horrific cycle” between restriction, overeating, binge eating, and purging. She calls it an addiction quite deliberately. She eventually found things that helped her fight her way out of the cycle and now she uses her experience to help others get free as well. Helen and I talk about the intense shame and guilt eating disorders bring with them, how hearing somebody else be open about their struggle can be such a lifeline, and we share all the struggles we each experienced in our own journeys. Helen sheds light on exactly what drives disordered eating and what fuels the addiction. We talk about what tools helped her and why they worked. There's so much information, compassion, and understanding in this episode, it moved me and made me realize how useful open communication like this is so we stop feeling isolated in our struggles. I hope you find Helen's story and knowledge as beautiful as I did.__About Helen Bennett:Coach Helen Bennett specializes in helping men and women break free of compulsive overeating. Having secretly battled bulimia for two decades, Helen has first-hand experience of the guilt, shame and frustration that comes with feeling out of control with food. She also understands the unique challenges of reclaiming a peaceful relationship with food and offers practical (and often quirky!) tools to help individuals eliminate compulsion and find lasting food freedom.Helen is a certified Health Coach and Addiction Recovery Coach and is the founder of BulimiaFreedom.com__Resources mentioned in this episode:BulimiaFreedom.comSelf-Compassion with Dr. Kristin Neff“Intuitive Eating, 4th Edition: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach” by Evelyn Tribole, MS RD and Elyse Resch, MS RD FADAGabby BernsteinTommy Rosen, Recovery 2.0__Learn more about Helen Bennett:Website: HelenBennett.coInstagramFacebookYouTubeTiktokLearn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

Is it really necessary? These are all questions Brad explores as he recounts his own experience with step 9 and looks ahead to the final few steps.
No God OA - An Atheist's Journey in Secular Overeaters Anonymous
In this episode, Brad explores the reasons that compulsive overeating behaviors thrive in isolation and how "shining the light" on the most embarrassing or shameful of our behaviors can actually help us find recovery.
Kathryn talks to Cookie Rosenblum about why your problematic overeating behaviors aren't benefiting you in any way, and how you can let go of those behaviors. You'll learn to recognize the false promises of overeating urges and realize that you get no true pleasure, relief, or emotional fulfillment from eating too much. The harmful, habitual pathways in the brain create an illusion that overeating makes you feel better, when it actually does the opposite. When we think about addiction and recovery, we tend to think specifically about drugs--both recreational and prescription-- including alcohol. But, some people struggle with other substances and behaviors that we don't often talk about when we talk about addiction--things like compulsive shopping/spending, work addiction, video game addiction, porn addiction, and compulsive overeating, to name a few. In this episode, Andrea (producer extraordinaire of our podcast) talks vulnerably with Dan about her own struggles with an addiction to sugar and other disordered eating behaviors. She discusses the ups and downs of recovery from an issue that many don't understand and yet is an epidemic in this country.
Emotional eating is never just about the food. Opal Co-Founder and Nutrition Director Julie Church, RDN, CEDRD-S, CD and therapist and host Carter Umhau, LMHC discuss the differences between binge eating, compulsive eating, and emotional eating. If my Fairy Good-Sister came to me and said, "I will give you the body you need to fulfill your life purpose, guaranteed, but you can only eat 30 grams of carbohydrate per day for the rest of your life," do you know what I would say? "I'll do it." I am so passionate about training, coaching, dancing, sininging, and choreogrphy that I would not hesitate to give up sugary starchy foods for the rest of my life. Still, I keep trying to add back more fruit and some grains, and reducing the fat in my eating plans in order to make them less extreme, more mainstream, and easier to offer to a broader audience. What I have had to accept is the fact that what is popular isn't what works for me, and it doesn't work well for my readers and listeners who struggle with sugar compulion, insulin resistance, and carbohydrate intolerance. Since the start of 2017 I have been tinkering with my nutrition, and it has backfired. Thankfully, I am back on the Keto-cart and feeling so much better. Here is what I have learned, and I hope this episode helps you to find the eating plan that works for you, for life.

Since the early 1950s, doctors have been telling people to eat a diet low in fat. This prompted food manufacturers to make low fat processed foods. With people following low fat diets, the thought was that everyone would lose weight and be healthier, but that's not the case. Rates of obesity, heart disease and cancer have increased. Another unwelcome side effect of low fat eating can be compulsive overeating. Without the fat in food, we just don't feel satisfied and we want more and more. Tune in with hosts Darlene Kvist, JoAnn Ridout and Katie Vigesaa to learn more about what triggers compulsive overeating and what you can do to stop it.

I launch a new podcast that's an intimate look inside my lifelong battle with compulsive eating and binge eating disorder. I offer up two first steps that help me deal with compulsive eating when it roars back into my life.
With Alcoholism in the familyhe never thought it would happen to him....after all...he was the helper...the good kid. He finally surrendered to the booze problem at the end of his first marriage and was a "good" recovering alcoholic, doing the right things but always a little distant. He always felt as if something was missing. As time went on his weight climbed, diets failed, feelings numbed, hope disolved and finally the light came on. His family intervened and insisted that he address his compulsive overeating and he did. He finally found the missing piece.
