Guest: Stephanie Yates Stephanie taught at PCA Plano as a writing coordinator and 7th grade English teacher, then moved to 5th grade and taught before returning to teaching at PCA North Campus. Stephanie was diagnosed as “anorexic, exercise bulimic” - which is an eating/identity disorder. Her parents divorced when she was young and always identified as a “pleaser.” A boyfriend made a comment about her weight. When things seem difficult, there are times that a person wants to “control” something in their life and controlling what they eat is one default and many young people select. What's the difference between being thin, healthy, or anorexic? Looks for signs that things are not “healthy” - wearing baggy clothes to “hide” a person's real appearance, not eating enough to maintain a growing, healthy lifestyle (consider what they're involved with), working out constantly, eating by themselves, going to the bathroom immediately after eating, an obsession with body image, etc… Note that an eating disorder isn't just something that young women struggle with, many boys and young men struggle with this issue as well. How do you get help? Here are a few places that Stephanie recommends for help in either understanding more about eating disorders or to actually get assistance with a loved one: Eating Recovery Center - Plano Girls to Women Health and Wellness The Center for Pediatric Eating Disorders (Children's Hospital, Plano) Recommendations by Stephanie are not to be considered endorsements that these institutions address issues from a biblical perspective. Today we're talking to Marissa Sappho, who is the founder and clinical director of Aurora Center in New York City which is an outpatient mental health clinic specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. Marissa is a Board Certified psychoanalyst, a certified eating disorder specialist, and supervisor. She is part of the faculty, supervisor, and member of the board at the Center for Study of Anorexia Bulimia in New York City, the oldest nonprofit training and treatment center for eating disorders in that country. I discuss some common myths about Anorexia such as the role of media images increasing the rates of anorexia and the myth of the "perfectionist" anorexic. I also review the symptoms, and the brain and chemical systems disrupted in this condition. I explain how anorexics become hyperaware of the fat content of foods and develop reflexive habits of fat-hyperawareness. Then I discuss the most effective treatments ranging from family-based models to those that target the habitual nature of low-fat/calorie food choices. I also discuss new more experimental clinical trials on MDMA, Psilocybin and Ibogaine for Anorexia, and both their promise and risks   I review the latest work on binge eating disorder and brain stimulation, drug treatments and thyroid disruption in Bulimia and why the treatments for Bulimia are so similar to those for ADHD. Finally, I discuss "cheat days," body dysmorphia and the growing list of novel forms of eating disorders start to finish. Melainie is a certified eating disorder registered dietitian and supervisor and is accredited by the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals as a clinical supervisor in the treatment of eating disorders. Lakshmi Dev went through hell with her body and decided to create my own heaven on earth through healing. What is an eating disorder? One of the most important things about anorexia and bulimia is understanding that they are caused by a complex interplay of genetics, epigenetics, early development, and current stressors. They can lead to dangerous outcomes because of how the eating disorder changes both the body and the brain. Many therapists and nutritionists, as you’ll hear in my conversation with Sarah Bradley, don’t treat from multiple angles, and often lack empathy into this condition. There are three main types of eating disorders we will cover here: Anorexia is the practice of cutting calories to an extreme deficit or refusing to eat. Bulimia involves purging, or vomiting, the food that has been eaten. Orthorexia is a fixation and obsession on eating healthy food (like only eating green vegetables with lemon juice). Statistics: Anorexia traditionally lasts for an average of eight years. Bulimia traditionally lasts for an average of five years. Approximately 46% of anorexia patients fully recover, 33% improve, and 20% remain chronically ill. Approximately 45% of those with bulimia make a full recovery, 27% improve, and 23% continue to suffer. Some may say it is hard to get our diet choices on the right track. But honestly, our eating disorders or food cravings sometimes aren’t because we are hungry.  To explain how to heal our relationship with food, I have Dietician and Book Author Heidi Schauster in this episode. Eating Disorder Heidi Schauster didn’t have the best relationship with food when she was younger. She struggled with eating disorders during adolescence. And went through a recovery process that included some study of nutrition. Heidi Schauster decided to study nutrition in college because she was obsessed with food. However, she was also a strong science geek and was interested in physiology and anatomy. She thought she would go on to medical school, but Heidi Schauster didn’t like the lifestyle. So, she chose to pursue studying nutrition instead. Studying nutrition was helpful in Heidi Schauster’s recovery. “I was a ballet dancer, and I thought dieting was the norm. And that I needed to eat more food than I thought. Studying nutrition helped me relax a little bit more to understand how food was needed in my body and muscles. And I allowed myself to eat more,” said Heidi Schauster. Getting Inspired Heidi Schauster has been helping people deal with their relationship with food for 23 years now. It was a far cry from her teenage years when her relationship with food was so chaotic. Heidi Schauster almost had to relearn that sense of pleasure and enjoyment from food. As a culmination of her recovery work, it helped that she had experience watching kids enjoy food again when she worked at a children’s hospital in Boston. That inspired her to help people. Nourish: How to Heal Your Relationship with Food, Body, and Self Heidi Schauster wrote Nourish: How to Heal Your Relationship with Food, Body, and Self because she wanted to create a nutrition book that was not going to be triggering for someone who is recovering from an eating disorder. She wanted it to be something that was also accessible to people who don’t have an eating disorder but feel like their relationship with food was funky. “I don’t know how anyone can not have a funky relationship with food sometimes in this culture. There are so many things pointing us in the direction of using food to better ourselves,” Heidi Schauster said.  Heidi Schauster believes that when anyone today struggles with their relationship with food, there is fear involved.  For some, it’s bigger fears than others. Hence, reintroducing food is a very slow program wherein a trusting relationship must be developed first. “We’ve gotten so mind-driven over our food choices. And we think about what we should eat so much. As a result, we don’t drop into our bodies and ask what would be right for you right now and listen to that response,” explains Heidi Schauster.  She adds, “If someone is very out of touch with their body, and not used to inhabiting their body or making decisions on what to eat, it can feel foreign to trust again.”   Steps To A Well-Balanced Diet First of all, Heidi Schauster advises to let go of the diet mentality and sense of trying to fix the body through food. We must accept that our body is ideal. When you come from that place of body acceptance, then you tend to make different choices around eating. Your choices will tend to be healthier. Another way to get your diet on track is thorough diffusion. It is a behavioral technique where you listen to your thoughts and approach it as an observer. Then you decide how to behave. “It just gives you a little space to take care of yourself and your body. And doesn’t necessarily mean you must go on a diet,” Heidi Schauster said. Negative Thoughts According to Heidi Schauster, negative thoughts are a part of life, and they appear for a reason. And it’s nice to know why they are coming up. What happens over time is that people start to behave from a place of self-care when they have negative self-talk instead of reacting to those negative thoughts in a self-destructive way. “Negative thoughts can be little messengers telling us that something is not right in the system. Sometimes when we find ourselves scourging for food. It’s not because we are hungry. It’s because we need something and we can’t figure out what it is that we are needing,” explains Heidi Schauster.  She adds, “And so while food is here and it’s pleasurable, pause and slow down a little bit. You may find that there is something else beneath that compulsion that drives you to eat or starve.” Different from Drug Addiction Heidi Schauster believes that we can’t be addicted to food in the same way that we are addicted to other substances. We don’t have to have a relationship with heroin or alcohol to live. But we have to face nourishing ourselves with food several times a day. We can’t deny that highly palatable food has an addictive quality to it or psychologically dependent on it. “When people are eating enough and balanced way, food often comes into balance quite well,” said Heidi Schauster. “We can become much more addicted to food or driven to eat in an out of control way or coping way when we’re not eating well on a regular basis. There are psychological and emotional reasons.”  She adds, “Our work ethics sometimes is why people don’t eat well throughout the day. Our bodies end up starving at the end of the day. Food activates all of the senses, but it’s not the same as being addicted to drugs.”  Getting Back On Track Heidi Schauster says getting back to a more embodied way of eating takes practice. It can mean getting reacquainted with your hunger and fullness cues. Some of it is also exploring what might be going on underneath. Ultimately, it takes work to figure out what is the eating style that serves you and your life the best. And eating styles are different because our bodies are different. Our bodies are unique, and everybody’s journey is different. If you want to get back on track, it may help to ask yourself these questions: What is going on with my body at these different points during the day? What sensations do I have around hunger or fullness? What are my unique habits around food that feel good and ones that don’t feel good? Why can’t I stop doing them? If somebody is not used to making choices about food from an embodied place that connects to your body, hunger and fullness can be elusive. That’s why Heidi Schauster advises people to close their eyes, take a deep breath, get into your body and ask on a scale of 0 to 10, where are your hunger and fullness. It’s all about pausing or checking in regularly. Ask what is it that you need at any given moment. See if your need for connection is not being met and figure out how can you meet that need. It’s something you have to do for myself. Internal Family Systems Heidi Schauster says there’ s a branch of psychotherapy called Internal Family Systems. It is useful in identifying those parts that are there to protect us. And they have a purpose. A lot of Heidi Schauster’s clients have benefited from this method of healing their relationship with food. “It recognizes that we live in all of us like a family of parts. Some of those parts are younger than others. But they are all trying to help regulate and stay together in this world,” Heidi Schauster said.  She adds, “Some of those parts are protectors. And some of those parts are managers. Plus, they might be doing something in this world that we don’t like. Like the part of us bingeing or inner outbursts. If we can understand that, we can build compassion within ourselves for ourselves.”  The Right Diet According to Heidi Schauster, the field of nutrition is a young field and always evolving. That’s partly why we feel we are contradicting ourselves. Because science is always evolving and changing over time, adding to the complexity of the situation, there are always studies that come out and get interpreted a certain way. “I try not to create judgment around anybody’s food preferences and desires. But rather allow them to explore what makes them feel good and what doesn’t,” said Heidi Schauster. “It’s about connecting to yourself and being able to make those choices. And it gets back to mindfulness. After completing an Adolescent Fellowship at Children’s Hospital, she worked as Clinical Dietitian Specialist for Inpatient Psychiatry and the Outpatient Adolescent Clinic. Since 1999, she has maintained a full-time private practice. She is the founder of Nourishing Words Nutrition Therapy in the Greater Boston area. In addition to counseling, Heidi Schauster consulted with schools, universities, and professional groups, and lectured widely on the topic of disordered eating. Heidi Schauster also provides individual and group clinical supervision for my colleagues in the nutrition field who work with disordered eating. Kirsten Oelklaus specializes in treatment for teens and adults with eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and emotional eating. In the field for more than 23 years, she offers insight to  disordered eating, some of the challenges people face with anorexia and/or bulimia, and how to recover. Just like everything in life, recovery is a process. I have been very open throughout my sobriety about other issues I have struggled with, and food is definitely one of them for me. In this episode, I talk with Kirsten about some of the similarities in the recovery process between substance abuse and eating disorders, and the challenges I have faced in my personal life with eating, shame, and weight. As an addicted person, I have to always be aware of compulsive behaviors because I have a tendency to be compulsive and I can overdo almost anything. These last few years I have found myself in a battle with food, not only physically with some weight gain, but mentally suffering with the shame of being out of control with food and using it as a means to comfort myself. I isolate with food so no one will know how or what I am eating, or how much. For me, the first thing I noticed was I gained weight and I was having a hard time losing it. I have fluctuated weight a little bit my whole life- nothing drastic, maybe 5-7 pounds here and there, and it was always easy for me to reel myself in and lose the weight quickly and easily. But not this time. I found myself a little depressed and feeling bad about myself. I noticed that different foods would affect my mood and my energy, and I continued to eat poorly and gain weight. I felt disgusting, out of control, and awful. For the past two years I have started almost every day in tears. Standing in my closet searching for something to wear among racks of clothing that no longer fit. Every day I was getting more sad and angry and resentful at myself. Finally, I had to take action. I signed up for a program that taught me about food and how to balance meals and eat regularly. I first had to change my mindset to not focus on how I looked, but to focus on how I felt. I know when I eat certain foods I don't feel good, and other foods make me tired. I started to cut out those things. At this point, I am happy to say I have developed a healthier understanding of food. And this made me so excited to do this interview with Kirsten. I wanted to learn more about myself and my struggles, and of course I want to help others do the same. There are moments in this interview that Kirsten breaks things down where it feels like she has seen my life and my habits, and she knows what I am battling. And for me, I know I'm not alone. You may have seen the recent headlines about a new study showing that women with celiac disease could be twice as likely as the general population to develop anorexia. For this particular study, researchers looked at more than 100,000 women and found that women over the age of 20 with celiac disease were doubly likely to develop anorexia later in life and women diagnosed before the age of 19 were nearly 5 times more likely to be diagnosed with anorexia than healthy women.  To help us better understand these staggering rates of disordered eating in women living with celiac disease, we've got Dr. Rose-Marie Satherly from the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine at King's College in the studio. Perhaps Australia's leading expert in nutrition and health, Dr Joanna McMillan completed a Bachelor Degree in Science with First Class Honours in Nutrition and Dietetics in Scotland and moved to Australia in 1999 to complete her PhD with The University of Sydney. She's also a trained fitness instructor, with countless television, radio and press appearances. With her new book Get Lean, Stay Lean out now, we asked Dr Joanna about how she got her start in the spotlight and her best advice for those of us wanting to live healthier lives. According to one of her researches, more people are killed by horses in Australia than all venomous animals combined. Most people hardly feel hungry because they eat before your time of hunger. 28:00 minute mark – Try more looking at your body and become in tune with your body. This "How I Broke Into" interview is filled with stories of courage and self-discovery, and provides tremendous insight into how a global brand can result from the initial efforts of one person’s decision to forge a new path. Here are notes from the show: Jill's love of yoga and fitness began early on. She has a love/hate relationship with business--she grew up in a solar community and her family's business was solar. She worked in the family business from a young age. As a child, Jill was on the standard American diet, was overweight, teased, scrutinized. She discovered Jane Fonda's Workout and Raquel Welch's Yoga Program (Total Beauty and Fitness). She discovered how important a teacher, even one on video, is. But she overdid t with the videos and became anorexic. We discussed "The Best Little Girl in the World" (1981) with Jennifer Jason Leigh (I wrongly said it starred Ally Sheedy). Anorexia/Bulimia is the #1 cause of death in teenage girls. For Jill, falling in love led to a path to self-love. She started studying shiatsu while attending Northwestern University, and this led to healing. The Coregeous Ball is part of her product line; it's a soft, grippy pliable ball meant for self-healing. She never planned to teach. But she was inspired by her mentor Glenn Black at the Omega Institute. Shortly before 9/11, she decided to explore teaching. She enrolled in the 200 hour Teaching Program for yoga. She felt inhibited by the rigidity of the teaching program's failure to take time for body and tissue sense. She started to change the way she taught. Jill became known for her lateral abdominal churning--Nauli Kriya--and had an 8 page spread in Yoga Journal. Her mother worked for JetBlue, which has a family program of flights all over the U.S. Jill offered to fly to yoga studios all over the country. "I had balls. And now I have a ball products business." She does compassionate cadaver labs with Gil Hedley so movement educators can see the anatomy on the inside. Yoga Tune Up does not stay in the yoga space. Center for Pain Rehabilitation - Mitchell Prywes, MD, Danbury, CT Hospitals are finally embracing all parts of well-being. Tune Up Fitness has 500 teachers worldwide. Jill's husband Robetr is a serial entrepreneur. 6 months into dating, he came to a 3 hour core workshop and couldn't believe how fast it flew by. He said, "We need to bottle this." The collapse of her mother and step-father's business made Jill reticent to build a business. She licenses materials and products globally. The Roll Model is being translated into other languages. "Self care health care." She has shared perspective with Dr. Kelly Starrett, best-selling author Becoming a Supple Leopard and Katy Bowman, author of Move Your DNA. She doesn't quite feel like she's arrived yet. We discussed the school system and deskbound kids. She recommended Starrett's Deskbound: Standing Up to a Sitting World.  I mentioned how much I enjoyed Starrett's appearance in 30 Days of Genius on Creative Live, in which he mentioned Jill. She did programs on breath, fascia, and pre-natal fitness for Creative Live. "We met at a time when all of us were trying to reach people." Robert is her business backbone, loves building businesses. It's scary to go along with new initiatives. Jill knew, in writing her first book, that she need to capture the soft-tissue soft tool market, so she did The Roll Model instead of a book on breath. That will be her second book. She has become known as a go-to expert in the field of fascia. She is impressed with Wim Hof's breathing method. Her daily practice involves soft tissue self-care, walking, range-of-motion exercises. Josh Landis is a strength and conditioning coach that has been helpful.
