What if influence wasn't about tactics and persuasion but about truth, trust, and genuine human connection? In this episode, Brian Ahearn, Chief Influence Officer at Influence People and faculty member at the Cialdini Institute, unpacks the fine line between influence and manipulation, a crucial distinction for sales leaders and C-suite executives who want to drive sustainable growth without sacrificing integrity.
Are you really a thought leader—or just claiming the title? Today's guest Mischa Zvegintzov, Chief Influence Officer at Influence Army, thought he was a Thought Leader. As a sales expert with decades of experience, he knew how to pitch. But when a podcast host bluntly told him, “You don't look like a thought leader,” everything changed. In this episode, Mischa shares how he pivoted from traditional sales tactics to leveraging podcast guesting as his primary vehicle for influence. He reveals how appearing on 100+ shows transformed his credibility, opened doors, and led to unexpected opportunities. Peter and Mischa also dive into the hidden power of podcast guesting—why it's more than just getting on a mic, how to “hijack” an audience the right way, and why most guests completely miss out on maximizing their impact. If you've ever wondered whether you're showing up as a true thought leader or just another name in the noise, this conversation is for you. Expect candid insights, hard-hitting truths, and actionable takeaways on elevating your brand, proving your expertise, and turning podcasting into a game-changing growth strategy. Listen now and learn how to amplify your thought leadership without breaking the bank. Three Key Takeaways: • Podcast guesting is a powerful thought leadership tool – Being a guest on the right podcasts allows you to tap into established audiences, build credibility, and position yourself as an expert without heavy marketing spend. • Most guests fail to maximize their impact – Simply appearing on a podcast isn't enough; thought leaders must engage in strategic pre-show preparation, deliver value-driven conversations, and actively promote their episodes post-release. • Thought leadership is about proof, not claims – Having a strong message isn't enough; you need visible credibility. Leveraging podcast guesting effectively can create the social proof necessary to establish real authority in your space. If you've had trouble finding the distinction between Thought Leader and Influencer check out this video by Peter Winick to learn the difference.

The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
Today I am so happy to have my friend (and a great friend of The Brainy Business) Brian Ahearn back on the show. Brian is a wealth of information and is the Chief Influence Officer at Influence People. It has been almost 100 weeks since Brian was on the show – which is kind of crazy to think about. He was here in episode 104 talking about how to ethically influence people and his first book, Influence PEOPLE. Now he is here talking about his third book, called The Influencer, which came out a couple of months ago. Today, Brian gives tips about Cialdini's 7 Principles of Persuasion, including some things to do as well as common pitfalls to avoid. He also talks about how he approached writing a business parable for this third book, and how that was different from a traditional business book. Lots of great insights await in this brainy episode! Show Notes: [00:41] Today I am so happy to have my friend Brian Ahearn back on the show. [01:36] He is a Ted X presenter who has more than 30 years of experience in the insurance industry. [03:39] Brian shares his background and what he does in this world of behavioral sciences. [05:33] Changing how people think or feel about something isn't usually enough–you need to get them to change their behavior. [06:46] It is not about what we think and how we feel. It is about how they think and feel. [09:16] Don't tell, ask. Also, say “Because…” and give a valid reason. That simple restructure is going to get you what you need far more often. [11:46] The Principle of Liking was something he learned the importance of through Cialdini. [12:37] It is not about us getting someone to like us, it is about us utilizing those same approaches to come to know and like them. [14:13] A lot of times, we don't know how thirsty we are until we take that first sip. (Giving compliments to people who don't get them often is like giving a thirsty person water, it makes a huge impact.) [16:32] Life is a lot happier when we are looking for the good in people and they are responding positively to us. [17:41] Brian shares about his three books and how they differ from each other. [19:09] His most recent book is called The Influencer: Secrets to Success and Happiness. [21:11] He shares that his approach for his most recent book is much like his approach to parenting. [23:14] He shares how his first two books were different from his most recent book. [25:49] Authority is really important for speaking and training and a book helps create that authority. [27:53] Brian summarizes Cialdini's 7 Principles of Persuasion: liking, reciprocity, unity, authority, social proof, consistency, and scarcity. [30:14] Liking Tip: Don't go into a situation trying to get people to like you. Have the mindset that you want to come to like the people you are with. [32:32] Scarcity Tip: Instead of talking about all the positive reasons for doing business with you, talk about what people give up for not doing business with you. [35:17] The value of ending with a question can have a huge impact. (reframing!) [37:06] All of life and sales is a long game. It is good to put the goodness out into the world and in some way it will come back to you. [39:23] Brian shares the things he is excited about and what he is working on. [42:17] Melina shares her closing thoughts. [43:45] Melina's top takeaways: Don't ask how you can get people to like you, instead find ways that you can like other people. When you genuinely like people and find things in common with them everything gets better. [44:46] If you enjoy the experience I've provided here for you, will you share about it? That could mean leaving a rating/review or sharing the episode with a friend (or 10!) Thanks for listening. Don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Android. What’s the difference between manipulation and ethical influencing? In this episode of the Building Us podcast, we are joined by Brian Ahearn, CPCU, CTM, CPT, CMCT, International Keynote Speaker, Author and Chief Influence Officer of Influence People, LLC, with hosts Erik Garcia, CFP® and Dr. Matt Morris, LPC, LMFT. Brian talks about the impacts of influence in today’s world and the three significant keys to ethically influence people.Episode Highlights:Erik introduces Brian Ahearn. (2:38)Brian mentions that when it comes to influencing, he would typically ask the audience about their layman's definition of influence. (5:37)Brian shares that influence is about behavioral change. It's not enough in most instances that somebody thinks it's a good idea. (6:09)Brian mentions that he use influence and persuasion quite often interchangeably. (9:27)Brian shares that manipulation is trying to get people to do things without regard to their benefit. (10:06)Brian explains the three keys to ethically influencing people. (10:20)Brian mentions that we've moved in a society, that definitions always change over time, and nobody wants to be manipulated. (14:02)Brian thinks that the words that we use are incredibly significant. Because sometimes, those influence techniques can be weaponized against you. (14:29)Brian mentions a book entitled To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others, by Daniel Pink. (16:07)Brian thinks that principle has become a philosophy of how we can live our lives and how we can live our best lives. (18:43)Brian mentions that taking those principles and learning how to weave them into stories, are far more powerful than just systematically listing them out. (33:41)Brian shares that consistency describes the reality that most people feel an internal psychological pressure and an external social pressure to be consistent in what they say and what they do. (44:05)Brian shares that the key to the consistency principle is to stop telling people what to do. Instead, start asking. (45:44 )Key Quotes:“It comes down to that communication, how we communicate can make all the difference between somebody saying yes, and somebody saying no. So for me, that's the foundation that you need to set so that you understand going forward what everybody is talking about.” - Brian Ahearn“There are many people who do enjoy some success and sometimes, they do things wrong. But what I would say is they could probably have more success if they actually understood what the research said, and was strategically applying it.” - Brian Ahearn“It’s important for our happiness, that the better we understand how to communicate with people at home, our friends, family, neighbors, the easier it is for them to say yes to some of the things that we're asking of them, the less friction that we have.” - Brian Ahearn“Consistency starts with us. We want to feel good about ourselves by keeping our word. It's driven from within, but there is external pressure too. Because when we commit publicly, we don't want to look bad in the eyes of others. So, it's a powerful driver of human behavior, but the key is getting somebody to commit to us.” - Brian AhearnResources Mentioned:Erik Garcia, CFP®Garcia Financial GroupDr. Matt Morris, LPC, LMFTDr. Matt Morris & AssociatesBrian Ahearn, CPCU, CTM, CPT, CMCTInfluence People, LLCInfluence PEOPLE: Powerful Everyday Opportunities to Persuade that are Lasting and EthicalTo Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others

The Intuitive Customer - Improve Your Customer Experience To Gain Growth
General Show Notes: Practical Advice on How to Influence People: 6 Key Principles Many years ago, Robert Cialdini introduced the principles of influence. Today they are crucial skills for salespeople worldwide. They are also foundational to your Customer Experience. If you enrich your experience with these principles, which include things like learning to genuinely like other people and encouraging a favorable environment for reciprocity by your sincere generosity, you can benefit your bottom line. In this episode of The Intuitive Customer podcast, we speak to our guest Brian Ahearn, CMCT®, Chief Influence Officer at Influence People about Cialdini's Six Principles of Influence. We discuss how you can use them to create the experience you want that will deliver the customer-driven growth you need. Key Takeaways There are six fundamental principles of influence, according to Cialdini. These are what Ahearn uses in his work to help people strengthen relationships, overcome uncertainty, and motivate other people to action. They include: The Principle of Liking. Many people make the mistake of thinking this principle is about getting other people to like you, but it isn't. What Cialdini is saying is that if you genuinely like other people and communicate this fact to others, it will set the stage for a relationship that can move forward. The Principle of Reciprocity. When people do something for us, we often feel like we should return the favor. However, these feelings of reciprocity only occur when we feel like the other person is sincerely helping us, not just trying to get something out of us. Ahearn says that this principle is about helping other people get what they want, not getting what you want in return. Ahearn explains when you demonstrate sincere generosity these things you want will come back to you naturally as a result. The Principle of Authority. When we feel like someone is an expert in something, we appreciate their advice more. It's why we hire a CPA to file our taxes and go to the doctor when we have symptoms. We want sound guidance, and it saves us a lot of time to get it from an expert. Making yourself an authority in a relevant area to people makes you a credible resource with advice others want to hear. The Principle of Social Proof. There is an evolutionary imperative in the idea of safety in numbers. Therefore, showing people how other people just like them have taken action and enjoyed a significant benefit as a result, is a compelling motivator for all of us humans. The Principle of Consistency. We all want to believe that we are as good as our word. When we agree to something, most of us intend to deliver and feel great shame when we don't. So, gaining agreement to move forward in some way is an excellent way to persuade people to change their behavior. They want to live up to your expectations—and their own. The Principle of Scarcity. In the time of our COVID-19 pandemic, we all have seen plenty of customer behavior motivated by feelings of Scarcity. We all want to have what we need when we need it. Creating feelings that a person needs to act to have what they need before it's gone is a strong motivator for action. However, Ahearn cautions that it is essential to keep people working together instead of in competition. If you don't believe him, consider the empty shelves of toilet rolls in stores as of late. Recommended Actions We often talk about the psychological principles that are behind the customer behavior inspired by Cialdini's 6 Principles of Influence. Your customer-facing teams must recognize this behavior and its motivations. We recommend training your employees in the soft-skills of emotional intelligence and the concepts of Behavioral Economics, in a program like our Memory Maker Training, so that they can manage it to a better place for your organization. For his part, Ahearn advises us to stop telling people what to do and start asking. This minor adjustment in your approach can make a major difference in your ability to persuade other people to do what you want. Moreover, he tells you to have a fallback position if the person cannot agree with your original request. That way, you have a better chance of still moving forward with your desired action, even if you don't get agreement for what you originally asked. For my part, I believe talking to people on a human level, with empathy and an eye toward helping others, we can meet everybody's needs—and that includes your need for customer-driven growth. Brian Ahearn is the Chief Influence Officer at Influence People, LLC, and one of only 20 Cialdini Method Certified Trainers in the world. Brian’s experience with Robert Cialdini’s methods places him among the most experienced practitioners alive. It was a pleasure to speak with Brian and to gain some insight on applying the methods of ethical influence that Cialdini pioneered in his book, Influence with clients in the real world. We hosted Brian in the Behavioral Grooves studio for our wide-ranging and in-depth conversation. It was a treat because we typically have our discussions via the web on Zoom or SquadCast, but Brian was able to meet us at the dining room table and it was terrific. As a result of being in the same room and sitting around the same table, our discussion on priming, influence and ethics was particularly personal and dynamic. Brian began our conversation by outlining the six principles of influence: liking, reciprocity, authority, social proof or consensus, consistency, and scarcity, all of which were identified by Robert Cialdini in his first book. We wandered into a great story about Cialdini’s very humble personality, that Brian conveyed by way of a dinner meeting with the professor. (Note: Kurt and Tim experienced Cialdini’s humility directly when we met up with the good professor in New York City, recently. Bob, as he urged us to call him, was as curious as a college freshman and solicited our thoughts on every topic we spoke about. Truly an inspiring and amazing guy.) Brian shared his thoughts about Tom Hopkins work on “How to Master the Art of Selling” and the impact that the spoken word has on our beliefs. The ‘what I say becomes what I believe’ was an important reminder that words matter. And in Brian’s case, words are just about everything when it comes to the world of ethical influence. This became clear when he spoke about how he trains insurance salespeople to use primes with their customers when pitching technology. The technology actually helps keep the drivers safer and provides more reliable data to the insurance agencies. Brian trains the agents to say, “…this technology works really well for good drivers like you.” We’re all for being safer on the road. Of course, we spent a fair amount of our conversation on the subtlety and power of primes. Fortunately, Brian took our musical bait and spoke to how he uses musical playlists to create and deliver his own personal primes. We were happy to hear that he’s created playlists that focus on titles or themes with the words ‘moment’ or ‘time’ in them. And it’s evidence that he takes his own medicine when it comes to the advice he shares with his clients. He’s using music to prime himself and others before meetings! We are always impressed with people, like many of our other guests, who apply these principles to their own lives. The priming discussion included a great story about how he used reciprocity to engage his daughter in doing some extra chores around the house. Rather than making his request quid pro quo, Brian decided to preempt the request with a raise to her allowance. After the new, upgraded allowance was in place, Brian’s request was met with immediate support. Kurt and Tim have recollections of childhood chores compressed with bad feelings – and they linger long into adulthood. As children, we never experienced enthusiasm over chores or things we were asked to do, in part because of the ways those requests were made. Brian concluded our conversation with three tips about the most impactful tools from the principles of persuasion. They are: Liking. The focus with liking needs to be on ME figuring out how to like YOU, not the other way around. The search for commonalities and the need to deliver compliments are on ME, not you. Authority. While authority has many meanings, a core part of this principle is in being an authority on what you do. Be willing to share advice. Be a giver. Be an authority, don’t just walk through your job with your eyes half closed. Consistency. The biggest part of consistency is, of course, being consistent in your words and deeds. However, beneath the headline is the very powerful subtext of asking, not telling. Be strategic. Be inquisitive. And live up to the words you speak. Our discussion with Brian gave us the opportunity to talk about both Coldplay and Frank Sinatra. With a playlist that wildly varied from a guy from Ohio, what is there not to like? And since Brian is from Ohio, the home of the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, we decided to do a little grooving on it. So, Kurt and Tim discussed Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame inductees and who, in our humble opinion, deserves to be nominated. Todd Rundgren was discussed as one of our nominees we'd like to see in the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. (We also discussed Queen, but Queen was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001, ten years after Freddie Mercury died.) The impact that music has on our lives is nearly immeasurable and we’re grateful to have the opportunity to listen to it, enjoy it, and chat about it. Tee up a lively tune before you listen to this episode! We hope you enjoy our conversation with Brian Ahearn.
