If there's one thing, we all have in common it's the fact that at some time in our life we have procrastinated something. Years ago, I was introduced to the phenomenon of picking a word of the year that could serve as a beacon or an overarching theme for your year. I was kind of curious as to why you would pick one word for the year when life is full of changes even on a daily basis, right? After all, the word of your the year, isn't your goals or your resolutions. It's something different. But, a year ago when I finally decided to succumb to something that I found a little intriguing, my eyes were open to why you would want to have a word of the year. If I thought this was just a fluffy little motivational word, and of no significance, I don't think I'd be talking about it. Several years ago I was asked to check my prejudice and bias and see it was showing up in my life. The source of that introspective question came at quite a surprise to me. None the less I was grateful to start visiting where I might be demonstrating Bias. Do you know where your bias lies? Recently I attended a concert in Las Vegas in a huge arena with about 15,000 people. The large screens flanking the stage and the screens as the set backdrop were in a constant juxtaposition from one musician to another. The producer or visual mixer was carefully crafting what we would see as we were experiencing the sound, feeling and reverberation of the music and the artists performing. We were being led to experience and see what they desired us to see but with 15,000 people, even with the same opportunity to see all the same screens, we were all experiencing the concert in our own unique way. It is the same in life, two people can experience the same thing and because of our life experiences, we interpret it differently. But how powerful if we can start dialing in our lens on what we want to see and focus more optimistically while remaining realistic! It feels like everyone individually is going through some sort of a storm on a personal level and then it's exacerbated and enlarged because of the macro things that are going on in the world. It's good to be informed but if we focus our energies on these crises and breakdowns, we may be giving away our power to them. Whenever we react to things by going into survival instinct or survival mode, we are feeding into unrest, fear, and anxiety and instead of getting through the storms we become swept up in the storms of life. If there's ever been a time when we need to become the eye of the hurricane, it's now. The eye of the hurricane is that sweet spot of the storm where it's calm and quite peaceful while the storm is raging around us. We are able to get into the eye of the storm and remove ourselves or shelter ourselves from the chaos when we stop and focus on some simple tools that can literally CALM THE STORM!
