In this episode of Skin Anarchy, host Ekta is joined by Dr. Mamina Turegano—triple board-certified in dermatology, dermatopathology, and internal medicine—for a conversation that blends science with soul. Known for her integrative approach to skin health, Dr. Mamina shares how her Japanese heritage, her mother's traditional remedies, and her clinical training have shaped her philosophy of care. The episode explores how modern dermatology can benefit from incorporating Eastern wisdom, with a focus on treating the root cause of skin conditions—not just the symptoms.Dr. Mamina breaks down the link between gut health and chronic inflammatory conditions like acne and psoriasis, emphasizing the importance of addressing internal imbalances through diet, stress reduction, and circadian rhythm alignment. She also challenges the skincare status quo, highlighting why conventional acne treatments may fail if they don't support the skin barrier or address hormonal drivers like cortisol and androgens. With patients now more informed than ever, she encourages curiosity—but also cautions against misinformation that can derail healing. Her new book, The Holistic Psoriasis Management Nutrition Guide, dives deeper into this integrative framework, including practical lifestyle tools and nutrition strategies that support lasting skin health. If you've ever wondered how lifestyle, microbiome health, and cultural traditions intersect with cutting-edge dermatology, this episode is a must-listen. A Parenting Resource for Children’s Behavior and Mental Health
For so long, mothers have been the CEOs of the medical, emotional, and even educational well-being of kids. But roles have changed over the years as the society and its norms and way of life continuously develop and become more progressive in different aspects.Come to think about how women were wired and nurtured to be caregivers. During childhood, girls are given dolls, whereas boys are given balls and legos. So you see, even as young as that, girls are trained to be caregivers.Kids need as much help and support as they can get from their parents. And so, you have to convince your spouse why and how to do holistic therapies like neurofeedback, psychotherapy, supplements, and many more that will be beneficial for your kids.So let's dive in and talk about how to successfully do that! I'm in a rabbit hole, and my kid is not getting better. We've all been in a rabbit hole where we feel that our kids are not getting any better. That's a normal part of the process. Sometimes, it makes us nervous or scared, but that's okay. Everything's going to be okay. What we first need to do is to educate our partners about what this therapy is. If you're considering neurofeedback, biofeedback, talk therapy, or whatever it may be, gather more information about it. Educate your spouse on how it works and the effects of the treatment you want to use for your kids. It's been said that guys usually use 50% fewer words in parenting than their wives or partners. Also, most men are pretty logical, so there's a need to mix up logical and emotional reasoning when educating and convincing your spouse. What can you give to a parent or spouse to educate them? Even as simple as sending videos, blog posts, and vlogs help in educating parents. You can also show them data to back up what you're trying to convey to them. 9 out of 10 dads go to the clinic for consultation and then express their gratitude and appreciation for the concise and thorough explanation of how neurofeedback works and how effective it is in calming the brain. It also helps to show them statistics about mental health. There are many blogs out there that you could get information from and then explain what the statistics of the efficacy of that treatment are. Neurofeedback is easy, and the good thing about it is that there are many research studies and peer reviews about it and its efficacy. When you try searching for neurofeedback on Google, you'll see good reviews. But you'll also get some complaints. The complaints are usually from people who didn't follow through on the recommendations, or they could have gone to a provider who isn't great because, as we know, there are some lower-qualified providers. You don't need your pediatrician's approval to do these treatments. These treatments that we seek are generally safe and natural. You don't need your pediatrician's approval to do these sorts of things. You are the CEO, and it's possible that you are more knowledgeable about integrative care than a standard physician considering that physicians don't often go this way unless they have their own pain points. The cost of not taking the right road and watching your kids suffer cannot be calculated.Though our society may have progressed, it is still patriarchal. Most of the time, mothers are home or working part-time while men make more money. In fact, the sad but usual case is that you can have a female and a male in the same role, yet the males are the ones who make significantly more money. It's no longer a surprise that it is the male spouse who is often in charge of the finances. So it is best that you need to lay out the costs for your own understanding. Our kid's mental health should never be compromised. Watching them go on the wrong path and suffer the...

Lori hung onto a sense of humor as she stumbled her way through 3 decades of "mystery illness", trauma and personal challenges to find healing and joy again. Through her search for healing, she had to abandon the allopathic mainstream healthcare system which had no answers except pills to make her feel worse. She certified in Biopratique, Mediation, Reiki, and holistic health and has joined forces with health practitioners to promote real healing with her work at The Roots Brand which is a sponsor of this podcast this month. We continue our conversation from Episode 41 about various alternative treatments we have tried since we were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. There is a common misconception that holistic treatments can only be used exclusively as a replacement for a Western approach, however these types of treatments can also provide tremendous benefits when used in conjunction with medications. ----CONTACT US:Podcast:IG: www.instagram.com/autoimmuneandyouEmail: autoimmuneandyou@gmail.comRachel Albo:IG: www.instagram.com/rachelalboEmail: rach.livefit@gmail.comWeb: www.rachelalbo.comErika Bustos:IG: www.instagram.com/healing_arthritis_holisticallyEmail: coacherikabustos@gmail.comWeb: www.erikabustos.comMUSIC:Intro/Outro Song: Higher Up by Shane IversLink: https://www.silvermansound.comAcast Supporter Song: Acid Trumpet by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3340-acid-trumpetLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseAdvertisement Song: A Breath Of Happiness by MusicLFilesLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/8453-a-breath-of-happinessLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/autoimmune-and-you. My guest this week is Dr. Ellen Vora In this episode, Dr. Ellen and I discuss the very relevant topic of anxiety. Anxiety is something that every child and every adult experiences at some point in their lives. While anxiety and anxiety disorders are becoming more common, it's also something that is often misunderstood: anxiety is so much more than “just a mental problem”. When we ignore the physiology part, we are missing out on an important piece that we really need to understand and address. Why? Because anxiety is a whole-body situation. The good news is, there are so many ways to support anxiety reduction and treatment that go beyond the traditional recommendations of just counseling or medication. Listen in to learn more about the difference between “normal” anxiety and a disorder. Dr. Ellen and I also dive deep into how we should be thinking about anxiety and holistic ways to approach it for ourselves, as well as for our children. Dr. Ellen Vora received her BA from Yale University and attended Columbia University Medical School. She's a board-certified psychiatrist, medical acupuncturist, and yoga teacher. Dr. Vora takes a functional medicine approach to mental health, considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root rather than reflexively prescribing medication. In addition to her private practice and speaking engagements, Dr. Vora consults for healthcare startups, and has a book called The Anatomy of Anxiety coming out in March. Sarah is one of my best friends + she opens her heart today to share about her healing journey with her chronic illness. It has been 7 years since she's had an autoimmune disease, numerous parasites + chronic viral infections. She almost had to drop out of college, her hair was falling out, her periods were extremely painful + had tons of symptoms. She went to over 10 doctors and got heaps of blood tests that keep saying how she was healthy, but her symptoms were worsening. She saw how antibiotics had such a harsh impact on her body + often served as a quick fix, but destroyed her gut + symptoms kept returning. She decided to try the natural route and finally got answers + results. Switching to non-toxic products helps improve your overall health. Lots of products approved by the FDA are banned in other countries. When you start the natural healing it might get worse before it gets better. It's short-term pain for long-term pleasure. She uses modalities like reflexology, lymphatic drainage massage, Ayurveda, dry brushing, and rebounding on a trampoline. She also doesn't drink alcohol + she reminds us that we don't have to have an explanation to not drink. Caroline Craven’s road to natural and holistic MS treatments is pretty fascinating. In 2001, she lost the ability to see and walk unassisted while traveling across Guatemala. Upon her return to the US, she was only given a probable diagnosis, but then started to progress rapidly. She was then placed in a three-year double blind study at USC for the t-cell vaccine. During which, she did a deep-dive into holistic nutrition, Ayurvedic medicine, Chinese medicine, and healthy eating. Now, Caroline promotes healthier living for MS patients through stress management, healthy eating, and having a positive attitude through her blog The Girl with MS.
