For the first time since May 2024, people have been allowed to cross between Gaza and Egypt through the Rafah crossing – seen by many Palestinians as a lifeline to the world. Israel reopened the border after the body of the last Israeli hostage was returned. So far, only a few of an estimated 20,000 sick and wounded people in the territory have been allowed through for medical treatment abroad. People are also coming back into Gaza but the numbers allowed are also very limited. In our conversations, Gazans share experiences of their daily lives and their plans to see their families again.

That is the question the people of Gaza have been asking themselves for the past few months.” And it's the question that kicks off a new issue of The Nation magazine, which they call “A Day for Gaza.” Since a “ceasefire” was declared four months ago, Israel has killed, very conservatively, 420 Palestinians. More than 70,000 overwhelmingly Palestinian people have been reported killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, including more than 300 journalists and media workers. This is without mentioning the destruction of more than half of all religious and cultural sites in the Gaza Strip. The UN has reported Israeli soldiers recording videos in which they mock Palestinians and Palestinian education, before destroying schools and universities. If it ended today, the loss of life, and home, and culture, and history in Palestine would take countless years to reckon, if it could be reckoned at all. But here in the US, we're being told by media that the conflict is winding down, because there's a ceasefire in effect; and we are to interpret all events going forward in those terms. That pretense is mainly expressed through a simple drop in coverage, which by itself says, “Not so much to see here anymore, time to move on.” As an interrogation of and a pushback against the suggestion that because powerful people's words have changed, there is no longer a desperate, attention-worthy crisis in Gaza or for Palestinians, The Nation lifts up the voices of Palestinians themselves, as a kind of intervention into a media conversation that presents Palestinians as subjects—sympathetic or not, depending on the story—more often than as actors, who have the basic right to determine their own future. Seven volunteers with the group, MMIW Search & Hope Alliance, examine its tendons, nerves, and organs. Kimberly Lining is the group's founder. She says she has seen death up close many times. “And I think through my years of traumatic experiences with violent death, I’ve seen a lot, it’s prepared me. I think just due to fire, like steel is forged through fire.” But for most people, exposure to death and corpses is not a recurring thing, so Lining reached out to Borman to arrange a visit. Not only does it gird people for when they find a body, but it helps them discern between human and animal remains. Two volunteers, Sabrina Griffith and Isabella Regalado, say they would recommend this experience. “Just seeing the veins, the actual ligaments, the bone, the muscles, it was quite surprising to see it and feel it in real life. I've only touched bones and stuff like that, so it’s very interesting to actually feel the inner part of our body.” “It’s actually been better than anticipated. I thought it would be a little bit more gruesome, but everyone has been very professional and understanding, and everyone has been doing their best to educate everyone else.” Lining and Borman remind people that viewing cadavers is not the same as coming across a corpse, whether that is in the wilderness or city. Such bodies are not preserved, and beyond what the cause of death inflicted, would be subject to the elements and scavengers. “If it’s in the wilderness, in the forest, bears, cougars, wolves … they’re gonna tear at stuff and leave the bone. So definitely pieces more than together.” Near the end of the visit, Borman sprayed a blue hydrating liquid to keep the cadavers from drying out and developing mold. He said everyone in Lining's group was respectful and asked great questions. “I’m pleased that we were able to make this happen. If she were interested in doing it again, I'd be open to doing it again.” Lining and her volunteers gave small gifts of gratitude to Borman and thanked him for his time. Seventy-four-year-old grandmother Máire Mhic an Fhailí attended a peaceful protest in support of the Palestinian people last August in Belfast. She was among those arrested under the UK’s controversial Terrorism Laws because of her t-shirt. The Police Ombudsman ruled last week that the arresting officer should have taken reasonable steps to arrange a translation service – and that Mhic an Fhailí experienced “oppressive behavior”. The police watchdog also issued a policy recommendation for future engagements with Irish-language speakers. Source:.scmp.com Trump Launches $12 Billion Strategic Mineral Stockpile To Counter China; Rare Earth Stocks Jump The Trump administration is preparing to launch a major initiative aimed at protecting US manufacturers from disruptions in the supply of critical minerals, committing about $12 billion in initial funding to build a strategic stockpile of essential materials, according to Bloomberg. The project, known as Project Vault, is designed to reduce America's dependence on China for rare earths and other strategically important metals. By creating a centralized reserve for civilian industries, officials hope to cushion companies against sudden shortages and sharp price swings that can disrupt production and strain finances. Shares of MP Materials, USA Rare Earth, Critical Metals and other rare earth associated names are higher between 5% and 10% heading into the cash open on Monday on the news. The manual also teaches the use of coordinated chanting to create confusion and overwhelm officers during active arrests, as well as surrounding officers until they release detainees. Each successful interference is described as a “micro-intifada,” framed as a tactic meant to spread, replicate, and inspire wider disruption. A small number of Palestinians from Gaza have started crossing into Egypt for medical treatment after Israel allowed a limited reopening of the Rafah border crossing. It had been largely closed since Israeli troops seized it in May 2024, cutting off a critical lifeline for those in Gaza. About 20,000 Palestinians needing medical care hope to leave Gaza using the crossing, but only a handful have been allowed through so far. The reopening of Rafah is seen as a key step in the US-brokered ceasefire agreement as it moves into its second phase. Listen to the article with analysis from the author:  Israel has banned Doctors Without Borders (MSF) from conducting humanitarian missions in Gaza. MSF has helped to keep the battered healthcare system at a minimal functioning level.  On Sunday, Tel Aviv announced that MSF would no longer be allowed to operate in Gaza. Israeli agencies claimed the humanitarian aid organization failed to provide Tel Aviv with sufficient documentation on its staff in the Strip.  MSF said it attempted to negotiate with Israel to share information about its staff, with safeguards to protect them, but those talks were unsuccessful. “Following many months of unsuccessful engagement with Israeli authorities, and in the absence of securing assurances to ensure the safety of our staff or the independent management of our operations,” the group's statement explained. “MSF has concluded that it will not share a list of its Palestinian and international staff with Israeli authorities in the current circumstances.” MSF supports about a fifth of all hospital beds in Gaza and a third of births. When Israel announced the ban last year, the UN's human rights chief, Volker Türk, condemned the ban as “outrageous” and explained it was part of an Israeli policy to prevent aid from entering Gaza.   During Israel's onslaught in Gaza, nearly all of the Strip's hospitals were damaged or destroyed. Tel Aviv has also barred medical supplies from entering Gaza and injured Palestinians from leaving. The shortage of medical supplies has led to preventable deaths. 

Middle East peace summits have discussed the possibility of Israel surrendering territory to the Palestinians or the surrounding Arab nations in exchange for peace. Stephen resigned from the Labour party, after penning a widely circulated letter, after the Labour party warned him they would “investigate” him if he spoke at a leftist organization on Holocaust Memorial Day. He is a member of Camden branch of PSC (Palestine Solidarity Campaign), Camden & Islington Momentum (affiliate of the Labour Party) and lately of the small network ‘Holocaust Survivors and Descendants Against Genocide.' Haim Bresheeth Zabnner was Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at University of East London and then a Professorial Research Associate at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).He is Filmmaker, photographer, film studies scholar, and historian. His films include “A State of Danger,” a documentary on the first Palestinian Intifada. His books include "An Army Like No Other: How the Israel Defense Force Made a Nation." Haim is the son of two Holocaust survivors and was raised in Israel. He is a member of Holocaust survivors and Descendents Against the Genocide and a founding member of Jewish Network for Palestine. The historical drama is set during the Great Palestinian Revolt against British colonial rule. At the heart of the film is Al-Basma, a fictional village inspired by the Palestinian villages of Lifta and Al-Bassa, which were destroyed and whose Palestinian residents were expelled by Zionist militant forces. Described as “epic” and a “masterpiece”, Palestine 36 weaves personal stories with the political realities of the era. Jacir reflects on the obstacles of bringing the film to life, the depth and complexity of its characters, and the importance of Palestinian cinema in confronting erasure and telling our history on our own terms.
