“U.S. shipment of 'lethal aid' reaches Ukraine amid Russia tensions,” NBC News reported in January 2022. “U.S. adopting 'deterrence posture' as aircraft carrier heads towards Israel,” France 24 announced in October 2023. The same month, The Hill warned about “Nutrition: The national security threat no one is talking about.”   This is part two of our two-part episode on the language of war. Last week, we discussed terms like “boots on the ground” and “military footprint;” “precision” or “targeted airstrikes;” “terrorism” and the very Orwellian phrase “enemy noncombatant.”   If you haven't listened to that episode, we definitely encourage you to do so. On this episode, we examine more of the most insidious terms that U.S. media and government officials use to sanitize military aggression worldwide, how this is affecting coverage of Israel's nonstop murderous bombing of Gaza, and discuss how we all can and should use clearer, more accurate terms to describe the real human stakes of state violence.   Our guests are Maha Hilal and David Vine.

Scanner School - Everything you wanted to know about the Scanner Radio Hobby

David Vine returns to the podcast this week to share alternative uses to Ham Radios. Not only can you use VHF and UHF Ham Radios to talk and monitor amateur radio frequencies, but you can use most of them to monitor outside the amateur radio band.  This means many ham radios can also be used as basic scanner radios. Frequencies that can be monitored will vary by make and model, but for the most part, expect to be able to monitor the VHF and UHF public safety bands with a VHF or UHF ham radio. Setting up scan lists and alpha tagging frequencies are most likely different from what you are used to with your scanner, but if you learn how to use a radio within its limits, you may find that having a ham radio and using it as a receiver, could really add value to your radio collection. And yes, I do give Baofeng radios a virtual poke in the ribs, but if you can use a radio like that or something similar to monitor a single or short list of conventional analog channels, then that could free up your scanner to monitor other activity.   And the more radios you have monitoring less frequencies, then the more activity you'll hear and enjoy. ====================================

“Israel Called Them ‘Precision' Strikes. But Civilian Homes Were Hit, Too.,” The New York Times equivocated back in May 2023. “US Military Footprint in Australia Expands to Counter China,” Bloomberg announced in July 2023. “NATO to launch biggest military exercise since Cold War,” the Financial Times reported in September 2023. Far too often, media accept and parrot the terminology of the Pentagon, never pausing to consider how deceptive and pernicious this language may be. War reportage is regularly littered with euphemisms, metaphors, jargon, and esoteric acronyms that obscure the enormity of the warfare and war crimes waged and backed by the US, warping public perceptions of the violence happening throughout the world in service of US empire. Some major news outlets, such as the New York Times, have adopted policies not to use terms like “enhanced interrogation techniques,” a Bush-era phrase used to sanitize the committing, sanctioning and outsourcing of literal torture by the US government. More recently, the BBC has said it will no longer use the term “terrorist,” as it is “a loaded word, which people use about an outfit they disapprove of morally.” But, troublingly, many loaded, euphemistic words and phrases remain in the vocabulary of leading news media, painting a woefully inaccurate and incomplete picture of both the past and the current state of US-led and US-backed violence around the world. On this episode, Part I of a two-part series on the language of war, we'll examine five of the 10 most insidious terms that US media and government officials use to sanitize military aggression worldwide, discussing how journalists, writers, and others in media can use terms that are clearer and more representative of the human stakes of war. Next week, we'll complete the list of 10 with Part II. Our guests are Maha Hilal and David Vine.

Scanner School - Everything you wanted to know about the Scanner Radio Hobby

I want to welcome a great radio friend, David Vine back to the podcast this week. David has a wealth of information when it comes to the radio hobby and has many presentations that he's prepared for multiple radio groups. David returns this week to share a presentation about how frequencies are distributed and organized here in the United States, and across the world. Frequency Allocation is important, because it not only helps vendors create RF Hardware for certain end users.  For example, transmitters, radios, antennas, and back end and interoperable equipment.   Allocation is also important so that adjacent countries can plan between each other and even satellite uplinks and downlinks can remain on spectrum that will not be interfered with. Allocation is important when it comes to global communication with both aviation and marine traffic. I love having David on the podcast, and I hope that he returns again soon to share another presentation. ====================================

David is all about this hobby.  From Scanning, GMRS, and Ham, he has immersed himself with the radio hobby.  So much so that he has involved himself with many local clubs and organizations. His love of the hobby does not end there.   David has created many presentations about the radio hobby, specifically ham, that can also be carried over to the scanner radio hobby. Today's conversation is an introduction to who David is.   You'll learn all about his radio history, what makes him tick, and a little about some of the presentations that he will hopefully share with us one day. I hope this podcast conversation is one of many that David and I will share.   ====================================

This fall marks the 20th year of American military engagement abroad following the events of 9/11. This year Trending Globally is teaming up with scholars at the Costs of War project to explore the effects of two decades of war. The Costs of War project is an interdisciplinary group of scholars who have stepped in where the government has often failed, working to measure the true financial, human, political, and environmental costs of America's post-9/11 wars.  On this episode Sarah Baldwin '87 talks with Stephanie Savell, one of the project's directors, about how the organization started and why its work is more necessary than ever. Dan Richards talks with David Vine about one of the most heartbreaking costs of these wars: the more than 38 million people who have been displaced from their homes in countries including Afghanistan and Iraq. https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/ (Learn more about the Costs of War Project.)  https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520385689/the-united-states-of-war (Learn more about and purchase David Vine's book The United States of War) https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520385689/the-united-states-of-war (A Global History of America's Endless Conflicts, from Columbus to the Islamic State.) https://watson.brown.edu/news/podcasts (Learn more about the Watson Institute's other podcasts.  )

The world watches as Afghanistan falls disastrously under Taliban rule, while this week the United States commemorates the twentieth year since 15 Saudi Arabian nationals (and a few others) attacked the twin towers in New York. Three thousand civilians died in the 9-11 bombings, but up to 4.5 million people have died in America's endless wars since then. Australia has joined these wars of choice that have cost national budgets, caused vast environmental damage, and shattered the lives of tens of millions. Our occasional series Understorey Asia begins with David Vine, author of "[The United States of War,"](https://www.davidvine.net/unitedstatesofwar.html) accounting for the damage done by the American empire: the recurrent wars of choice (carefully engineered by corporate, congressional and defence interests); the environmental and human jeopardy involved in hundreds of US bases in our region, including those in Darwin, Pine Gap and North West Cape; and the military exercises which also engage us in this militarised view of foreign policy. Apart from disaster abroad, these wars have drained the people's wealth. Foreign policy is generated by arms corporations, selling to the military, while politicians receive generous donations from the same arms manufacturers they publicly finance: it's a complex but endless cycle that further militarises foreign policy - all for nothing but to making problems worse. David Vine reminds us of the urgency for allies of the US, like Australia, or at least our civil society, to head off ill-advised talk of an "inevitable" war against China, which would outweigh the mistakes already made in countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Iraq and Afghanistan. In this episode, we interview David Vine, who is a Professor of Anthropology at American University.  His new book is entitled: The United States of War: A Global History of America's Endless Conflicts, from Columbus to the Islamic State  (UC Press). It is a provocative examination of how the U.S. military has shaped our entire world, from today’s multi-trillion-dollar decades-long wars to the prominence of violence and militarism in everyday American life. He examines the global matrix of U.S. foreign military bases, the existence of which, Vine argues, makes offensive interventionist wars more likely, creating a self-perpetuating system of permanent conflict. Vine draws on almost two decades of first-hand research in fourteen countries and territories, as well as on military bases, to expose the political interests, profit motivation, racism, and toxic masculinity underlying the country’s relationship to war and empire, and to examine the infrastructure that has made war a tempting first resort for resolving conflicts and exerting power. As President Biden begins the process of withdrawal from Afghanistan after 20 years at war, please consider speaking to Professor Vine about the long history of the US’s military conflicts.

This episode's focus is to ‘Bring Light Into Darkness' around what the US public should know about the cost of war. Over the last couple of shows we have focused on - among other things - the developing cabinet of President-Elect Joe Biden and the foreign policy history of Joe Biden along with those cabinet members he has already selected or is reportedly considering. The disturbing finding is that it all points to a bellicose foreign policy, similar to that of President Obama's administration, as well as President George W. Bush before him and even in excess to Donald Trump's foreign policy and broken promises of deescalating our military forces abroad. This episode's show shifts focus from personalities to objective outcomes of the past history of US militarism, and we are delighted to have a great American authority as our guest: Author and professor David Vine. We are excited to be presenting the articulate and compassionate dialogue that Professor Vine shared as our guest, on Christmas eve, that we are sharing for the first time during our broadcast tonight. Professor Vine presents a compelling account of the ‘Cost of War' - not just for our servicemen and women and their families or the financial costs as a nation as well - but also for the world populations impacted negatively by unjust interventions promoted by our foreign policy. Jon and Matt were joined by Dr. David Vine to discuss the perpetual warfare state that the U.S has been since even before its independence. For its 244 years history, there have only been 11 years for which the United States was not engaged in military combat. These wars have almost all been offensive in nature, have killed tens of millions of people, and destroyed the lives of exponentially more. The history of the United States is a history of aggressive war. We need to have a reckoning with this blood soaked past. Dr. Vine is a professor of political anthropology at American University, a board member on the Costs of War Project, a co founder of the Overseas Base Realignment and Closure Coalition, and the author of Base Nation, The United States of War, Island of Shame: The Secret History of the U.S. Military Base on Diego Garcia. Specifically Discussed: - David's background and his development of an interest in exposing the imperial history of the United States - The ways in which the US is an empire and the various phases of that imperialism - The aggressive nature of nearly all US wars - Debunking the myth that the massive size of the Department of War and its 800 foreign bases does anything in terms of defense of the United States - The inseparable nature of racism and war - The need for truth and reconciliation and accountability for the mass death and destruction caused the our imperial wars of aggression David's Work: Please Support Him! Since its founding, the United States has been at peace for only eleven years. Across nearly two-and-a-half centuries, that’s a lot of war. In his new book, The United States of War: A Global History of America’s Endless Conflicts, from Columbus to the Islamic State (University of California Press, 2020),  David Vine tries to figure out why this has been the case. His book is a powerful, broad-sweeping, and, at times, shattering account of the forever wars that the United States continues to fight to this day. Vine, an anthropologist at American University in Washington, DC, argues that war infrastructure can be a dangerous thing, even if its designers cite defensive purposes. The United States’ 800 military bases abroad today, and its hundreds of military forts that dotted the western frontier in the nineteenth century, have made war more likely by making it easier to think about. But if we build bases, Vine writes, “wars will come.” As ending endless wars have become part of mainstream political discourse, Vine’s book should help jolt these conversations into action. But if we build bases, Vine writes, “wars will come.” As ending endless wars have become part of mainstream political discourse, Vine’s book should help jolt these conversations into action. Scott interviews David Vine about his research into the effects of America’s decades-long wars on terror. Vine and his team have recently estimated that at minimum, 37 million people have been displaced as a direct result of the war on terror, with roughly 8 million of these fleeing across international borders as refugees. He adds, moreover, that at least 800,000 people have been killed just in combat, along with probably 3–4 million more due to deprivation and destruction of infrastructure as a direct consequence of the fighting. Although immediate culpability cannot be placed at the feet of American troops for all of these dead and displaced, without question it is ultimately American policies and actions that have allowed these destructive conflicts to take place, and allow them to continue today. Discussed on the show: “Millions displaced by US combat since 9/11” (Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft) Creating Refugees: Displacement Caused by the United States’ Post-9/11 Wars “Biden says US must maintain small force in Middle East, has no plans for major Defense cuts” (Stars and Stripes) David Vine is a professor of Anthropology at American University and the author of Island of Shame: The Secret History of the U.S. Military Base on Diego Garcia. He also writes for the New York Times, Washington Post, and The Guardian, among others. The Chagos Archipelago is a group of islands situated in the middle of the Indian Ocean. You may have heard of the largest of these Islands, Diego Garcia, because it is home to a strategically important US military base. However, the story of how this base came to being is rather sordid. And the plight of the thousands of inhabitents who were expelled from their homeland to make room for this base is utterly tragic.    Today's episode is a little different than what you may be used to from a typical monday episode of Global Dispatches Podcast. I have two guests today--each bringing a different perspective to one vastly overlooked affront to human rights that has been ongoing for the last 50 years.    I first speak with David Vine an associate professor at American University and author of a book about the Chagossian exile called Island of Shame. We discuss the history of Diego Garcia, why the US military considers the base is so strategically important, and what's become of the Chagossian population since their expulsion.   Next I speak with Olivier Bancoult, who at the age of 4 was banished from his homeland. Like many Chagossians, he now lives in Mauritius. He tells me his life story and we have an absolutely fascinating and somewhat tragic conversation about how a people who have been banished from their homeland adapt and find ways to preserve their cultural heritage.
