Zen teacher and mindfulness pioneer Fleet Maull joins me for a deep dive into neurosomatic mindfulness, bearing witness, and the science of awakening. We discuss plunge practices, time in prison, the nuances of running summits, and the shift from the 60s to the 90s in spiritual culture. “When we let go of our attachment to the separate self, we can begin to discover who and what we really are, which is so much bigger, so much deeper, so much more extraordinary than we could have imagined. At that point, a much larger, more meaningful life begins to unfold through us that's no longer a personal journey of accumulation and achievement. It's an experience of flowing with and participating in something grand. We discover that we are a fluid, dynamic piece of this much greater unfolding life process, which is the opposite of a materialistic orientation.”—Craig HamiltonIn this episode, "Freedom from Spiritual Materialism," Craig explores a common hurdle in meditation and spiritual growth: how our natural desire to achieve something through practice—like personal improvement, existential relief, or blissful experiences—can actually block our progress.True spiritual growth is about letting go, not acquiring more. This can be difficult to accept because it challenges some deeply ingrained ways we relate to life. As spiritual seekers, we aim to awaken and tap into the profound potentials of meditation. However, we often approach the spiritual path—and life itself—with a tendency to grasp, hold on to, and accumulate experiences for self-enhancement and self-confidence. In doing so, we miss the true essence of spiritual awakening. So, what's the solution? To reach our deepest spiritual aspirations, we need to approach meditation and spiritual growth differently—essentially 'wanting it without wanting it.' This might sound tricky, but in this episode, Craig shares key insights on how to shift your mindset from one of achievement and acquisition to one of receptivity and surrender. From this subtle shift, the deeper dimensions of meditation and awakening will unfold. To access the full transcript of this episode and more resources, visit the episode page on https://www.MeditationChangesEverything.com. If you're interested in exploring more of Craig's approach to meditation, you're invited to tune in to a 90-minute online workshop Craig will be hosting called Meditation 2.0 – The Miracle of Direct Awakening. Raising Our Vibration: Exploring Higher Consciousness Through Spiritual Practice
Episode 19: ARE YOU FALLING PREY TO SPIRITUAL MATERIALISM? In our consumer culture, it's very tricky not to fall into this trap. Spiritual materialism is a form of attachment that reinforces and builds up our egoic consciousness in the guise of spirituality or spiritual practice. This can take the form of collecting spiritual possessions, books, courses, devices, attainments, initiations, group identification, or seeking to achieve and maintain a certain state. While it can feel like we are "being spiritual" (and any of these can be used as skillful means), spiritual materialism reinforces egoic consciousness and its grasping tendency. Stephen and Kevin talk about how to recognize "Spiritual Materialism" in ourselves in order to let go and rest as Awareness itself. For more information on Subtle Energy Meditation, including the 10-Week SEM Course, ROV Meditation App, and other skillful means to support your practice, visit: https://raisingourvibration.net
Spiritual materialism happens when the ego hijacks our spiritual practice and uses it to fulfill its hopes, dreams, expectations, desires, etc. This episode is an overview of what spiritual materialism is, what it's not, how it manifests in our meditation practice, and the ways in which the new-age industry reinforces spiritual materialism to sell us capitalism. I also offer 3 practical tips in moving out of materialism. Enjoy! Reference: Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism by Chögyam Trungpa. This is a public episode. In this “mini” episode we discuss how Spiritual Materialism affected the outlook, behavior, and overarching beliefs of CUT church members and our parents. Topics include: -- Defining Spiritual Materialism -- How CUT has their own version of the Law of Attraction and why this is problematic -- Magical thinking and its influence / an infantile view of the world and how things are affecting you -- How Purism is linked to our topic -- How only putting out positive intentions and doing rhythmic chanting (decrees) has limited effects -- How the Hindu caste system is reflected in CUT hierarchy and their modified theology of karma -- How decrees (rhythmic chanting) are part of spiritual materialism -- Hierarchies of graduation -- How doing getting professional mental health support comes down to the willingness of the individual, and how some people were encouraged to do it -- How some mental health conditions are viewed as weakness and being caused by invisible evil spirits called “entities” -- Beliefs about if you are failing it is because you are failing spiritually -- In the last four minutes we give a summary and recap of what spiritual materialism is and why it's harmful
Every yogi begins infatuated with the practice. This is what inspires us to fall in love with yoga so we keep coming back for more. But the initial fascination we feel with the practice eventually wears off and our first instinct is to spice up the practices with new types of yoga or superficial gimmicks that are more about entertainment than true awareness. There is difference between yoga as spiritual entertainment and settling in to spiritual maturity and discovering a deep devotion to the process. This episode discusses emotional wisdom and spiritual growth and how we can let wisdom and discipline lead our path rather than let our yoga become an object of curiosity and desire. When we practice non attachment to our expectations of yoga, our relationship with the spiritual elements has opportunity to expand and take root.
I was scrolling through my news feed and found one of them self help books being advertised called "Warrior". I've always been a fan of self help content, but these days I'm reluctant to dive into new ones. Chögyam Trungpa called this "Spiritual Materialism". Collecting many different spiritual disciplines and teachings, new and ancient, is really just another form of materialistic pursuit. I might be good on it, though I'm still a bit interested. This episode gives a few of my thoughts around some of the author Garrett J White's content and how it may or may not differ from my own spiritual beliefes. She helps people to dig deep into their own priestess magic, make money and live their dharma – not their conditioning. I talk about my history in Evangelical Christianity, delving into the study of the Occult over the past year, and how Ceremonial and Ritual Magick ultimately led me back to the basics: simply Meditating. I talk about how there's been a lot of monetizing of this trendy "new" practice in America and some of the pitfalls of how it's perceived and what it's for, and offer some suggestions as to a higher purpose for sitting and breathing, and how you don't need any of the Spiritual Materialism shit, but simply, your own body and breath. A quotient is an answer to a mathematical division problem. When we gather experience and look at the opportunities within our most challenging days, by deduction we begin to grow in wisdom. Hey, at the very least, we might learn what not to do. When we become wise and stop desiring the acquisition of wealth, or love or spiritual enlightenment, we will begin to become naturally happy. The Happiness Quotient endeavors to apply knowledge to the experiences in our lives, exploring how Happiness can be a part of our every day, even during the most challenging times. In today's inaugural episode of our new incarnation we explore the healing power of music with bluesman and Master of Divinity in Buddhist Philosophy the Reverend Freakchild. We also share a killer rendition of Happiness Jones by The Wood Brothers. Music throughout the episode is brought you by Reverend Freakchild off his latest album The Bodhisattva Blues. Final cut is Happiness Jones by The Wood Brothers. What is Spiritual Materialism? How do you navigate it? In this episode, Jen shares what Spiritual Materialism is and how it shows up in our lives. What it's like to be in your intuition versus what it's like to be in your ego. Key Notes: How Spiritual Materialism shows up and what it ends up doing in our lives Intuition is not spiritual, It's science based How intuition is a natural state of our being How everything we experience is about all of us, our connection to source and one another Show Notes: (0:33) Jen talks about how Spiritual Materialism was describing what she is witnessing and experiencing (2:50) Jen shares how the examples of Spiritual Materialism look like and how it can show up (03:45) How when we find ourselves reinforcing and self-actualizing, we know we are in ego (6:30) Spiritual materialism is an attachment to the spiritual path as a solid accomplishment or possession. It is said that spiritual materialism is the hardest to overcome. The imagery that is used is that of golden chains; you're not just in chains, you're in golden chains. And you love your chains because they're so beautiful and shiny. But you're not free. You're just trapped in a bigger and better trap. The point of spiritual practice is to become free, not to build a tap that may have the appearance of a mansion but is still a prison. By M. Caplan (07:21) How we start to fake it to make it, we start to think that if we do the right things then we'll be happy (08:12) Jen shares her own feelings regarding religion vs spirituality (10:07) The difference between addicted to self-improvement and being open to growth is in the feeling in your body and the attachment to what it means (12:15) Jen discusses how we can notice the difference between your intuition and ego (13:45) How we're all born in touch with our intuition, with the same offering, we are just choosing differently (16:11) How nothing that we experience has anything to do with us Quotes: (7:33) The truth is that you already are everything that you are seeking (7:48) We have everything we need inside of us (9:42) Everything that you need is within you (10:14) Vulnerability is the gateway. The stretch is where the growth happens (13:17) Everything is a choice (18:44) You are your Divine Truth Links Mentioned: Resource for Shadow Work: https://lonerwolf.com/ Heart Math Institute: https://www.heartmath.org/ PODCAST DISCLAIMER: This podcast is to educate, inside, and inform the listeners of various pathways to wholistic well being. In this courageous book "Grounded Spirituality" Jeff takes us on the spiritual ride of a lifetime. The book opens with the author's compelling journey through a variety of spiritual approaches. Through decades of dedicated exploration and discernment, Brown exposes the transcendent notions of spirituality that limit our human experience. In his fiercely authentic, no-holds-barred style, Brown reveals that what we view as 'spiritual' is often devoid of the gift that makes us most alive--our precious and unique selfhood. He demonstrates that true spirituality is a whole-being awakening, one that heartfully embraces our entire human experience: our feelings, our stories, our bodies, our relationships with others, and the earth that houses us. Brown then engages in a riveting dialogue with a fictitious spiritual seeker named Michael. Their conversations unfurl in warmth and humor, threaded with cutting truth and inspiring realization. Hands-on exercises throughout provide a direct experience of a vital new model. In Grounded Spirituality, the author lays down the tracks for an embodied way of being--one that leaves us 'enrealed, ' integrated, and purposeful. Not awakened--but awakening. Not transcending our humanness--but finding meaning and spirituality within it, right in the heart of our imperfect daily lives. At long last, we can lay down our weary heads, burdened by the impossibility of transcending our human experience. Back to our roots, back into our bodies, back into all that makes us magnificently human. Home at last... “If you want to live a more spiritual life, live a more human life. Be more truly, fiercely, heartfully human.” -Jeff Brown - - - - -SUPPORT THIS PODCAST & VLOG- - - - - ► Become A Member: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv_MsYFGi-RHrNajHqqUJ6A/join ► Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thenakedguruexperiencepodcast ► TIP JAR: paypal.me/thenakedguru - - - - - WEBSITE, SOCIAL & OTHER PROJECTS- - - - - ► Website: https://www.thenakedguruexperience.com ► Sharing Circles: https://www.rememebringourself.com ► Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thenakedguruexperience ► Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/672595846495678/ - - - - - LINKS - - - - - ► More about Jeff: https://jeffbrown.co --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thenakedguruexperience/support
This week's episode is inspired by a different podcast called Guru, which dives into how spiritual materialism has lead people down a dark path, behind teachers who don't have the best intentions for their students. Buddhist philosophy clearly dictates that Dharma cannot be sold or bought and more specifically, that Enlightenment and wealth are two different paths. We discuss why that is and how we can fully embrace the spiritual path regardless of where we are materially in our lives. To stay connected, follow our Instagram at @the.daily.dharma
As we steadily dismantle the ego in the course of our practice, it will often simply rebuild itself, cloaked in new disguises. Adi and Rishika discuss the pitfalls of indulging the ego's spiritual displays, and why shadow work is among the essential tools for navigating this nearly universal developmental phase on the path to true freedom. On the surface, owning a watch isn't a complex thing. Dig a little deeper into our motives for owning any given watch, and things get complicated fast. Allen explores the mental gymnastics involved in picking out your next watch, and he explores everything from the study of human motives, to why so many watch nerds hate on Invictas, and more.
If you're flipping watches constantly and wondering how to slow that down, Allen's got a method for picking out keepers and avoiding flippers. The method grew out of a talk Allen gave at a Gear Patrol event about creating the perfect three-watch collection. He wanders into Spiritual Materialism, a developing theory he's been tinkering with for about a year.
In this, her first Podcast, Nalanie discusses Spiritual Materialism and how some people are advertising about the spirit - a sort of "let me put my magic on you and make you feel better" approach to spirituality! They make it seem that spirit is something that can be found outside of you when, in fact, the opposite is true: It's inside you and all it takes to realise it is simple awareness. In reality there is no materialism in spirituality and yet some people try to commercialise it so, here, Nalanie describes and prescribes some simple practices to help you find the Divine Spirit within and, in doing so, to find inner peace.Recorded at the Integral Yoga Centre, Gibraltar, in October 2019.

Live from the MIND/WAVE event in downtown Los Angeles comes this very special episode on the topic of “Spiritual Materialism.” Myself, Daniele Bolelli, Cory Allen and Michael Philip sat atop gloriously high pulpits adorned with emeralds and holy water to instruct all of you on the virtues of sacred practice! Really, we sat on wooden chairs talking about the pitfalls of spiritual materialism and how western influences can make for strange bedfellows with eastern modalities. The other guys on the stage are wonderfully sharp and thoughtful and are all great podcast hosts in and of their own right. I highly recommend you check them all out.
