Loving-kindness mantra for more compassion (#54)

Meditation is such a powerful tool, a wonderful bio- and lifehack. Research shows that Loving-Kindness meditation has tremendous benefits from greater well-being to providing relief from illness and improving emotional intelligence. For me, meditation is the one thing, that let's me calm down my mind, reconnect to my heart, release and relax. And it helps me manage my type one diabetes better, by balancing my blood glucose levels. Today, we practise Loving-Kindness meditation together, which uses a sequence of mantras to offer well-wishes to different people in your life. Instead of focusing on the breath, which most meditation techniques do, we use the silent repetition of certain phrases. In the loving-kindness meditation those phrases are an offering to someone—a gift-giving. This meditation focuses on developing feelings of kindness, goodwill and warmth towards others. ✨✨FREE: Meditation scrip✨✨ Practise loving-kindness meditation by yourself, in your own pace. This week's episode is about banning unhealthy and making healthy foods more accessible to everyone for a generally healthier society. Guest on the show is Dr. Paul Coleman, a Public Health Registrar and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Warwick, UK. Together with Dr. Hanson, Paul recently published a review on academic research, which looked into the connections between obesity and advertising of unhealthy fast food products. The findings of the review led the network to recommend to the UK Government Consultation a total ban of such product advertisements on television. With their important work, Paul and his colleagues challenge the UK government and big cooperations. Big food companies are challenged for advertising unhealthy foods specifically to our children. Paul's work is a big step towards health education for all ages and something we will discuss in detail. This week's podcast features an awareness exercise with Nicole Harrington. A meditation style fostering awareness of self. Diabetes is interfering in our relationship with food so much and actually enjoying a meal can be challenging. We are constantly forced to look at food in a mathematical way to do our carb counts, evaluate it with its macros as if it is a science project and inject medication for it every single time. No matter, how you eat with diabetes, very day is a balance act of decisions and that adds stress to our lives. We made this meditation, to ease off stress and for you to return to the present moment. It is made to empower you to foster a good relationship with yourself and the way you nourish your mind and body by focusing on the breath. ✨✨Mindfulness eating booklet✨✨ In connection with mindfulness eating Nico and I developed a small booklet with a vegan low carb recipe and mindfulness practise, which we are giving away for free in a giveaway. The heart chakra comes into appearance in the colour green in the center line of the chest. This is the place of the “spiritual heart”. Use this 10 minute meditation anytime you want. It is particularly uplifting during feelings of loneliness, stress or worry. Relax more, stress less, cause those negative feelings, can mess badly with our blood sugar levels and effect our entire being. Uganda is a country struggling from political lockdowns, which is increasing their humanitarian crises. I spoke with Vivian Nabeta, founder of the Sonia Nabeta Foundation. In her counrty, kids need to travel up to 6h every 6 weeks, the majority of that by foot, to reach the nearest clinic for their next insulin vial. This issue got even bigger due to lockdowns and further limits of transportation. Now, motoscylce taxis are being used to bring medication to remote areas, making Uganda a pilot country to reduce this travel gap families face, which otherwise prevents them from accessing insulin. I spoke with Vivian about her life saving project, how it all started and how to keep insulin cool without fridges. How can you possibly spend less time managing your diabetes and minimising decision making on a daily basis? I discuss just that in today's interview with the athlete Sid Sharma from Canada. After being diagnosed with T1D, Sid immediately got into cycling and has, since then, done many long distance races around the world such as London to Paris in 2016 with roughly 400km/2500miles and crossing the entire US from New York City to San Francisco in 2017, cycling for about 5.000km/3.00miles. But not just that, him and his T1 diabetic wife follow the ketogenic diet and he says: “We are running diabetes on autopilot” and he continues saying, “it is about going away from this rollercoaster and having that confidence.”

It is very important to get the definition of these terms right, as they get used a lot in the diabetes world. Research around gender-specific needs, treatments and medical care is essential for the overall well-being of humanity. Fundamental research and education for girls and women around the world is needed to support and improve their diabetes management. Taking time out with a gong bath (#13)

Today I like to take you on a journey of sounds, in particular of an ancient instrument from Western China, the gong. Today, gongs are often used as meditation music - and that's maybe where you have heard them recently. Gong baths became an important part of my self care and daily meditation practise about a year ago, helping me to take care of my subconscious mind as well as my body. Both my mind and body need a sort of “time out” at times, especially when dealing with T1D, which adds extra stress to my life (diabetes distress). Gong baths help me to do just that. I can relax and just ‘be', feeling more capable to deal with life's challenges and responsibilities. I, therefore made this episode to share my personal practise with you and for you to experience its benefits at home. You are going to hear an interview with my gong teacher Wendy Burbidge. In the interview we discuss: ✨ What a gong bath is ✨ How gongs became Wendy's passion ✨ What motivates people to do gong baths ✨ What it's health benefits are and how it can slow down our brain waves Wendy and I recorded 2 gong baths for you! One is at the end of this episode, played on a bigger gong with deeper sound. The other one is with a smaller gong and higher sound, which you can find free to listen to on my blogcast @thehappytypeone.com. There you can also find illustrations, a bit of history and some of the health benefits listed, people experienced in gong baths. I look forward hearing from you on instagram on how you liked this episode. In todays episode I spoke with Fernanda Claudino, a Brazilian lawyer and T1D, living in Curitiba, close to Sao Paulo, Brazil. We spoke about: ✨ the health care system in Brazil ✨ her recent venture with the low-carb diet ✨ how she is managing low-carb with her two kids in quarantine ✨ and the benefits she has experienced by following the low-carb diet e. g. better blood glucose control, reduction of basal rate by 5 to 6 unites She has only just started low-carb few months ago and is loving it. Yet she believes, that being stuck at home due to the pandemic, it is actually the perfect time to try low-carb. Not just because, many of us are at home and can prepare our own meals but also because we can support our immune system to be less vulnerable for infections such as COVID by having good blood glucose control. For today's episode I spoke with Laura, a former health management student from Germany. Laura is a type 1 diabetic herself and wrote her final Bachelor thesis about the impaired quality of life in type 1 diabetes patients (T1Ds). To explore how those people manage their diabetes and how it effects their psyche, she interviewed many type 1s between 18 and 25 years. In this episode, we speak about her main findings. Her work contributes greatly to type 1 awareness to optimise medical care we receive. The interview is in GERMAN, but we summarised Laura's main findings in English on my BLOGCAST: www.thehappytypeone.com/blogcast Laura on Instagram: instagram.com/kimdiabefit? As most of us have experienced, stress can have a negative effect on our blood glucose levels. Mental health can at times, impact our blood glucose just as much as food does. It is important to feed the mind with positive thoughts and take moments to pause, calm down and rest. For this crazy time of uncertainty, in which many of us feel insecure about our health and overall well being, I established a meditation to feel more protected, save and confident. A meditation of less than 10 min I like to share with you today in this episode. Music by Steffen Grell, www.entspannt.de Write me your thoughts on this episode on Instagram @thehappytypeone.
