Released on the 9th June 1978, “Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds” went on to sell an estimated 15 million copies. As you likely know, the album features an adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic sci-fi story, narrated by actor Richard Burton set to music, with vocal performances from the likes of David Essex, Justin Hayward, Phil Lynott, Chris Thompson, and Julie Covington. A single, “Forever Autumn”, reached number 5 on the UK singles chart, and has become an enduring classic. In 2006, the album was brought to life as a touring stage show. It's has had several revival tours since, including a London West End run in 2016. Jeff Wayne is picking up the baton again for the 2025 arena tour featuring Max George and Maisie Smith. Jeff Wayne was born in 1943 and wrote around 3000 advertising jingles which appeared on TV in the 1970s, as well as various television themes. He's also been a professional tennis player. Les Miserables – in lay terms “Les Mis” – is one of the most awarded and impactful musicals of the late 20th Century. Based on the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo, which was turned into a French concept album, and then translated into English and expanded upon for its London West End debut in 1985, the show opened on Broadway in 1987, and became an instant classic as audiences were captivated by the heart-wrenching dramas of the poor during the French Revolution, and especially by the bombastic, melodically haunting songs. With the recent passing of Lucy Simon, playing the role of Lily Craven in "The Secret Garden" is both special and bittersweet for Sierra Boggess and the rest of the cast. Despite people telling her to switch to vocal performance, Sierra stayed as a musical theatre major so she can “graduate a triple threat.” She recalls how she got to do Phantom in Las Vegas which changed the trajectory of her career. She considers leaning into acting as the most important aspect no matter what you're doing and always considers her character's need at the moment to help her with how she's going to sing or dance. Being a part of "The Secret Garden" now playing at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, Sierra talks about the different messages of the show, her relationship with Lucy and how they're honoring her, and the contrast between working with adults and kids. She also gets real about her beliefs, her relationship with fans, knowing what your truth is and why you shouldn't let anyone take your love of performing away. Sierra Boggess is an Olivier-nominated actress who made her Broadway debut in 2007, originating the role of Ariel in "The Little Mermaid" wherein she received Drama Desk and Drama League nominations. She's also best known for her re-inventing the coveted role of Christine Daae in Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera". In fact, Lord Webber himself went on record to say that she's the best Christine. Her other stage credits include "It Shoulda Been You", "School of Rock", "Master Class", "Love, Loss, and What I Wore", and "Music in the Air". She also starred in London West End's "Les Miserables", and "Love Never Dies". Currently, Sierra is playing Lily Craven in "The Secret Garden" at Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre. PART ONE:Paul and Scott talk about Pearl Snap Studios, contrabassoons, penny whistles, and bagpipes. PART TWO:The guys remember Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who recently passed away, chat about Taylor's previous gig playing for Alanis Morissette, and talk about why Debbie Gibson deserves serious respect. PART THREE:Our in-depth conversation with Debbie GibsonABOUT DEBBIE GIBSON:You may know Debbie Gibson for her late 1980s hit pop singles “Only in My Dreams,” “Shake Your Love,” “Out of the Blue,” and the chart-toppers “Foolish Beat” and “Lost in Your Eyes.” What you might not realize is that Debbie wrote all those hits completely solo while still a teenager. At the age of 16 she became the youngest artist ever to have written, produced, and performed a #1 single on the Billboard charts. She once shared the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year honor with Bruce Springsteen, the same year she was nominated for Best Pop Female Vocalist by the American Music Awards and Favorite Female Music Performer by the People's Choice Awards. Now more than 35 years into her career, Debbie has sold over 16 million records worldwide, and has released 10 studio albums. Her most recent, The Body Remembers, was released last August, and is her first US studio album in 20 years to feature all original songs, including a new duet version of “Lost in Your Eyes” with Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block. Though she was named one of Billboard magazine's Top 60 Female Artists of All Time, Debbie has also found success in musical theater, starring in Les Miserables and Cabaret on Broadway, and in the London West End production of Grease, among more than a dozen other productions. Never a pre-packaged pop invention of record label executives, Debbie was a musical prodigy who has continued to make her mark as a singer, songwriter, producer, musician, actor, and entrepreneur.

RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey welcomes back Vidar Hjarding MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands to re-start his regular Connect Radio audio described theatre reviews with his first visit back to a live theatre performance in almost 2 years. Vidar's first trip back to the theatre was to see the audio described performance of ‘What's New Pussycat' at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre on Wednesday 10 November at 7.30pm with live audio description by Julia Grundy and Caroline Smith. What's New Pussycat is a musical, comedy theatre production Written by Tony Award winning, Joe Di Pietro which marries the classic Henry Fielding novel The History of Tom Jones. and the iconic songs of Sir Tom Jones, to relive the delicious excess of London's in the swinging sixties. Set in 1965, ladies' man Tom Jones arrives in London with a broken heart, but he also has big dreams and a big voice. He quickly discovers an exciting world of mods and miniskirts, dancing and decadence, but most of all…incredible music. Romance and adventure await, but will Tom ever be reunited with his one true love, who seems more interested in designing for Carnaby Street than in being Mrs. Tom Jones? Vidar began by explaining to Toby what it was like for him going back to the Birmingham Rep in almost 2 years and the joy of being back in the theatre seeing a live audio described show. If the rumours are true that What's New Pussycat will be hitting the London West End stage in 2022, then Vidar would certainly recommend going to see an audio described performance of the production for a trip to London's West End. If I said the words, “I know this much is true,” a certain generation of humans would immediately start humming along with the lyric and the unforgettable melody from the iconic Spandau Ballet song, simply titled True. As the songwriter and guitarist for ‘80s music phenom, Gary Kemp wrote True, along with 23 hit singles, and the band's androgynous, glam look changed the culture of music in a way that wouldn't be truly understood for year. He later worked with everyone from Nelly to Lloyd and the Black Eyed Peas, wrote music that's appeared on TV shows worldwide, including Spin City, the Simpsons and Ugly Betty a well as Hollywood blockbusters like the Wedding Singer, Charlie's Angels, 50 First Dates, and Sky High. When Spandau's opening run came to close in the early 90s, Gary then followed a parallel muse into acting, appearing in the hit British gangster movie, the Krays, and then in Hollywood movies like the Bodyguard, and Quentin Tarantino's, Killing Zoe. He also made his theatrical debut in the London West End production of Art. Gary began touring again with Saucerful of Secrets, alongside Pink Floyd drummer, Nick Mason, and bassist, Guy Pratt, rekindling a desire to be back in the studio writing and recording an album he produced during the pandemic called INSOLO, which is a deeply reflective look at his life, love and work. You can find Gary at:Website : http://smarturl.it/INSOLOgkInstagram : https://www.instagram.com/garyjkemp/If you LOVED this episode:You'll also love the conversation we had with music icon, Ben Folds, about music, creativity and the power of nonconformity : https://pod.link/goodlifeproject/episode/e4c6ed32b87354e9fe5773e88892207dCheck out our offerings & partners: Hooked on Phonics: Hooked on Phonics App lessons keep kids excited to build new reading skills. You've got to appreciate creative ingenuity... The Calgary Underground Film Festival is kicking off today online, you can find out more right here; https://www.calgaryundergroundfilm.org/ There's a fantastic selection of films running online until May 2nd online but we jumped into the one that really caught our eye. 'Alien On Stage' is the story of an amateur dramatics group lead by a crew of UK bus drivers spend a year creating a stage adaptation of Ridley Scott’s 'Alien'. The show is a crushing flop, but fate gives them a second chance to find their audience. Whilst still adjusting to the idea that their serious show is actually a comedy, the group is suddenly whisked from their village hall to a London West End theatre to perform this accidental masterpiece for one night only. With wobbly sets, awkward acting and special effects requiring 'more luck than judgment', this is the touching and hilarious underdog tale about a unique bus driving crew who become space heroes. We talked with co-director Danielle Kummer about following this motley crew of performers and paying real reverance to what these people are doing and the spirit of creativity and celebration of a piece of work that trancends genres, mediums and generations...
TVC 532.5: Ed welcomes George Chakiris, the Academy Award-winning and Golden Globe Award-winning actor known around the world as Bernardo, the leader of The Sharks, in the iconic 1961 screen adaptation of West Side Story. Topics this segment include some of the subtle differences between the stage version of West Side Story and the iconic motion picture, as well as George’s experience playing Riff in the London West End stage production of West Side Story before he was cast as Bernardo in the movie. Frederic Curzon (4 September 1899 – 6 December 1973) was an English composer, conductor and musician. He was born in London in 1899, and died at Bournemouth in 1973. Curzon had a life largely associated with music - besides composing, he conducted and was both a pianist and a noted organist. His early life was largely in the theatre, where he was musical director in several London West End theatres. In 1938, he moved to the radio. The music he wrote was mainly of the English light music genre, but he also wrote for films, radio and the theatre.
Danielle de Niese, “opera’s coolest soprano”, opens the door of her rehearsal room to Edwina Pitman, as she prepares to make her London West End stage debut. Swapping the world of baroque opera for musical theatre, Danielle will be starring opposite Kelsey Grammar in the award-winning classic musical Man of La Mancha. The daughter of Sri Lankan immigrants in Australia, who began her career aged nine winning a TV pop talent contest, Danielle de Niese has a ferocious work ethic which she applies to every role she takes on, whilst also maintaining the gruelling schedule of one of the most sought-after opera singers on the planet. From her rigorous technique and intense training to careful scrutiny of all her rehearsal footage, de Niese reveals her process of perfecting the emotional heart of a role, which to her is the most important aspect of her performance. We also catch a glimpse of her home life at Glyndebourne, in her off-stage role as one half of the husband-and-wife team behind one of opera's oldest festivals, where de Niese herself became an overnight sensation when she made her debut there as Cleopatra in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in 2005.
All the Spice Girls projects that lead us to the 2019 reunion tour. We actually get a lot at this time. They’re literally... "Giving us everything". Brits 2010 Spice Girls win best British performance of the past 30 years – for 1997 hit Who Do You Think You Are.Geri Halliwell and Melanie Brown (Scary Spice and Ginger Spice) attend to collect the Brit award. They look incredible. I don’t think these photos do Geri justice. I remember watching it on TV and thinking “Hell, how is this angel on earth”.2012 was a big year for the Spice Girls of course we get the 2012 Olympics.London 2012 Olympics was a huge deal in the UK. We had one of our most successful events on record, taking 65 medals. More than we had since 1908. But….. the real thing everyone cared about….. was the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.I had got confused. I believed they would be on in the opening ceremony. Frankly, they deserved tobe in both. Emelie Sande appeared twice. I felt like she was on it a lot. Was Dido there at all?12 August, 2012. The show was entitled “A symphony of British Music”. 23 million viewers in the UK, 750 million globally.Worst kept secret ever. It had been rumoured for some time and then a few days before the event, rehearsal footage leaked of the Spice Girls performing around taxis. They were apparently reluctant at first – believing the show was being staged at minimal costand only agreed after Simon Fuller convinced them. Missing out would be a mistake….. Whodid: The Rolling Stones , David Bowie , Sex Pistols , Kate Bush and The LibertinesThey don’t appear until 20 minutes in, nearer the end of the music section. Everytime I saw ataxi I started screaming. Convinced it was them. Most tweeted moment of the year: 116,000 tweets per minute.By this point we had already had an announcement of a new musical in the works for the girls. So, in June 2012 the five girls reunited on the St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel where 16 years previously they had filmed the video for Wannabe. They announced a juke box musical will be made from the back catalogue with a book by Jennifer Saunders and production by Judy Craymer. Then we move into musical territory. Viva Forever! (written with an exclamation mark – presumably that was Victorias input – we know she loves a ! her Greatest hits thank yous were filled with them). Right choice of people to work with. All female. Felt very appropriate. Saunders can be linkedto Comic Relief, Ab Fab, The Movie.Open in London West End at the Piccadilly Theatre in Dec of that same year. Before we talk about the show – can we do opening night. Victoria nearly didn’t make it. Didn’t walk the red carpet with the girls; did with her familyo The look book. Geri is in a huge ballgown. Very similar to the one she wore at PrinceCharles Birthday Gala. All in upmarket dresses….. except VB. Who is in trousers, ashirt, and a jacket over her shoulders. (Maybe she was genuinely late).I had on platform trainers. My union Jack vest. My bottle of wine. It was very middle class, middle aged, middle mooded. Was not a lot of jumping and screaming. It felt like Mamma Miaaudience, to me. It felt…. Weak. And I wanted it to be good. The story was – well, X Factor felt tired at thatpoint, and it was centred on that. Also, they started as a group and then she left. Whereas theSpice Girls were about 5 girls forced together who had to get along. Bear in mind a yearearlier Little Mix had been put together as a winning group. THAT would have been a betterstory.o They used album tracks and solo stuff. Which I thought was strong. A nod to the fans, new music for some.o Staging – cool – with the houseboat that rose out of the stage.o Also, there was this complicated birth mother story that had an obvious conclusionthat never got resolved.o I lay the blame at Jennifer Saunders door. And the support she would have receivedin writing the book. She is known more for things coming together in improve andrehearsal – They never had a finished script when they went to film an episode of AbFab. The jokes in it were tight – hilar, but it didn’t feel slick and fully cohesive. - The reviews were savage:o Telegraph: "ll tell you what I wanted, what I really really wanted – I wanted thisterrible show to stop. I shall not dwell on the plot because, goodness knows,Jennifer Saunders, its writer, certainly hasn’t done. Viva Forever! marks theWest End coming to an unequivocal dead end."o Guardian: The real problem is the songs. For one thing, there aren't enoughmemorable hits in a career that lasted for three albums to support two hours oftheatreo That’s the tone all the way through – bad script, lack of experience in Saunders, not enough hits to carry the show, gloomy story. We also get a documentary _ Spice Girls Story: Viva Forever! Another Christmas treat myfamily left me in a room with a bottle of wine to enjoy. - Announced on 2nd May that the show was to close after only 7 months, with a loss of£5million. Who takes that hit? That would have been a huge blow. They were looking at thatshow being their legacy…… they were thinking transferring to broadway, a soundtrack, amovie. Big things were planned for this.o How do you survive reviews like that? You just can’t really. Its not like a movie, wherepeople can just pop in. West End is expensive, and a travel, it’s a huge event.o Some satisfaction. I had written to Jennifer Saunders to appear in it…… Tell thestory. Then we get the Hot mess that was GEM.- July 2016: There is a website launched with a video stating they will be doing something forthe 20 th anniversary of Wannabe (watch). The video, they are sat in a bed with paper hats on.- Its just Scary, Baby and Ginger…… with the intials of Melanie, Emma and Geri spelling GEM.In the video, Mel B is wearing two hats….. makes you wonder if they were expectingsomeone else.- They don’t say what is happening, but they say something. Its highly speculated there will bea gig in Hyde park the following summer. Mel B has subsequently confirmed that…. But we never know what to believe with her, because a lot of the time she says things she wants tohappen. Shes obviously read The Secret. - November we get a leak of a single from the 3 – Song For Her – I think it could have been abanger. Its what you would expect from a grown up spice girls album actually.o Geris vocals are awfulo It obviously is pretty raw, needs a lot of production work. But that all comes in later.Get a Hex Hector remix. Call up Freemasons. You got a hit on your hands.o They said it was not a single. Emma said on Heart it was just the girls getting togetherand messing around. - This whole thing just got MESSY – There was some hot rumours they would perform at the XFactor final that year. Either as GEM, or the Spice Girls. But that never happened. That sameweek – Mel C and Victoria duetted on 2 Become 1….. They sang it at the Beckhams NewYears Eve party. (VB is always doing that, her Karaoke song is her OWN song. But she didn’tsing most of the vocals, so it’s a genuine treat and challenge!)- Then they were saying they weren’t called GEM, and still the Spice Girls. Then the other twosaid they weren’t the Spice Girls without all 5. Then they said the other two might join, and theother two said they wont. Then Mel said GEM wasn’t a thing, the tabloids made it up – eventhough the domain name is registered to them. It was messy messy messy….. and just fadedinto nothing. Much like another girlband acronym: Sugababes MKS

Lloyd and Tim sink into the murky and topographically challenging world of Joseph Conrad's imagined London, as described in the classic 1907 novel ‘The Secret Agent'. It's a world of foreign agents, mysterious assassinations, international tensions and (alleged) Russian intrigue - so nothing like the world today, right? Our route through London takes in foreign embassies in Knightsbridge, dodgy book shops in Soho, underground beer halls on the Strand, plus the wide green spaces of Greenwich Park. Our mission at the 'CuSpec' Book Club is to road test works of fiction that appear to be curiously specific about dates and locations. We go to the places mentioned and see if descriptions are accurate, journey times credible, dates and days all in order. Along the way, we learn things about the book and its author. For early access to ad-free episodes - and exclusive access to all our show notes, maps, photos and videos - please support us on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/curiouslyspecific. In the very first episode of the Take Me to the World Musical Theatre Podcast I'll be talking about what musicals are. As well I'll be telling you about myself (Alouise) and why I love musicals, including some of the first musicals I saw like The Little Mermaid and The Phantom of the Opera. As always you can go to Take Me to the World and visit Episode 1 to get resources mentioned in this podcast.
Today we speak to Theatre critic Nicky Sweetland about the world of London West End Theatre. Black Coffee is a South African record producer and DJ, who began his career in the mid 90’s. He is probably South Africa’s biggest deep house producer and this track “Buya” just takes my breath away, it features Toshi Tikolo on vocals. An example of producer as band member, Bernard Edwards of Chic was behind the visceral sound of 1985 hit “Some Like It Hot" by the super group The Power Station. Songs about cocaine abound but not many have the sonic beauty of “Lost" by American songster Frank Ocean. It was released as the fourth single from his debut studio album Channel Orange. Ross Petty is one of Canada's most successful and enduring theatrical impresarios. For the past 20 years he's been producing family musicals at Toronto's historic Elgin theatre. The shows are in the tradition of the British holiday Pantomime, where actors ad lib and the audience interacts with the antics on stage. If you've ever produced a show you'll want to listen because Ross talks about how he went from being an actor in the show to taking over as producer, getting sponsors, hiring writers, actors, being the driving force behind one of Canada's most successful, ongoing theatrical events and how he recovered when he lost money. I forgot to mention as well as doing all that Ross also stars in the shows, wearing a dress. Ross has performed at Le Lido in Paris and appeared with Betty Grable in the London West End musical Belle Starr. He made his Broadway debut in Arthur Kopit's Wings, created the role of Eddie Dorrance on All My Children, and co-starred with Ginger Rogers and Sid Caesar in a national tour of Cole Porter's Anything Goes.
Barry Weissler is a Tony Award-winning American theatrical producer. He met his wife, Fran, in 1964 during an engagement of a touring theatrical production in New Jersey. The two then started a touring theatrical group, The National Theatre Company, which presented classic plays to High School, College and adult audiences with professional casts. After years of touring Shakespearean plays on the east coast, they brought Othello and Medea to Broadway in 1982. The two plays earned them their first two Tony Award nominations. As of 2014 the pair have earned 28 Tony or Drama Desk nominations. They have won 7 Tony Awards and 4 Drama Desk Awards. The couple also received the Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production for their production of Chicago in the London West End. In 2010, they were given a lifetime achievement award by the New York Musical Theatre Festival. I’ve been waiting since 1993 and that first day of rehearsal of My Fair Lady to pick his brain. Took me 23 years, but I finally got my chance! Listen to Barry tell me all about . . . His journey from Actor to Director to Bullfighter (!) to Producer. How they turned the Encores! production of Chicago into the second longest-running Broadway show of all time. What he thinks about movie studios entering the Broadway game. His process of picking shows to produce and how that has changed. Why he doesn’t think Broadway is better off now than it was 20 years ago. I got a chance to learn a heck of a lot from Barry as a PA on My Fair Lady, as one of his Company Managers on Chicago . . . and now, you’re gonna get a chance to learn from one of the best too.
