Greetings, friends! Can you believe we've made it to December? Wow! Take a big, deep breath. I'm so proud of you. To round out our year of podcast episodes, we've got a good one for you today. I sat down to chat with Terri Connellan. Terri is an author, creative transition coach, teacher and accredited psychological type practitioner who specializes in creativity, personality and self-leadership-- especially for midlife women in transition to a life with deeper purpose. Terri works globally through her creative business, Quiet Writing. Her book, Wholehearted and the Companion Workbook are published by the kind press. We dive into some great topics in this episode, including:Beautiful home offices that look like librariesBecoming a published authorChanging careersEmbracing a beginner's mindsetWhat it feels like to leave yourself behindThe beauty of our past experiences informing how we move forwardTerri's values of creativity, self leadership and personalityWhat it means to be a psychological type practitionerTools like Tarot, Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, human design, etc.Honoring creativity and self expression in your lifeListening to the frivolous Pull Quotes“My work is around creating your story, and your work is around reclaiming your story. I think there are fantastic synergies between those two ways of looking at the world.”  ---- 5:21“When you spend a long time in one place in one organization, or in one sort of career path, even though I had lots of different iterations, my identity was very much stitched into that work. I was successful in that work. And I enjoyed it for a long time. But what I really struggled with, and what I share in my book, Wholehearted was how I struggled just to make space and time for what was really important.” ---- 6:04“I think sometimes when we're working hard for others, we can lose touch with what's important for us.” ---- 7:45“When we start that change, we're not always clear on what the direction is, but we've focused on the forward.” ----11:19“So even though I enjoyed success, enjoyed my role, it was just really realizing that there was more important work for me to do in the world.” ---- 12:54“I just find that in midlife, it's a time when often the things -- whether it's our career trajectory, whether it's our personality-- everything's starting to change, and it's quite a volatile mix.” ---- 14:17“And I realized that I was on this, this journey to connect back with what feels wholehearted for me. What feels aligned, would be fulfilling what's in line with my personality, and what I want to create in the world. So partly, it's about legacy. It's about calling what we have felt called to do for many years that we haven't gotten around to? What's got in the way of that pathway? And how can we now make a transition to feeling more wholehearted in the world? To feeling more fulfilled, and to getting to what's important to us.” ----15:57“If you look at a tarot deck, there's 78 cards, some are super, super positive and inspiring. And some are like, well, here's, here's a really shadowy part of your life you might want to look at, and it's the same with personality type. There are these particular aspects we can identify as our strengths. So for me, it's introverted, intuitive. And there's other aspects of our personality that are not so strong. But if we can sort of shed light on those unconscious things, then that's how we can really get whole.” ---- 21:14“If we can understand the way that we're wired from a psychological type person or personality point of view, it just provides us with some tools for looking at the things that we are really strong at but also where our blind spots might be.” ---- 24:37“I think one of the biggest challenges of going through the whole journey to wholeheartedness, or to reclaiming what's important for us, is: it requires going through uncertainty. And it requires patience.” ---- 36:28“Take some time to have a think about your strengths… I use that as a lens, generally, on working with our gifts, but also being self compassionate, because none of us are good at everything. You know, strengths are strengths for a reason.” --- 40:25“I encourage people to tap into the wisdom of whatever creative urges are there and make time for them.” ---- 45:23 Mentions and More Info:Buy Terri's book, “Wholehearted”Buy “The Wholehearted Companion Workbook”Terri's websiteTerri's blogTerri's InstagramMyer's BriggsTerri's Create Your Story PodcastPenelope LoveBeth Cregan

Perception is how we experience the world.”“I wanted to share a story of what it meant to come from the broken side of the fence, I just wanted to be a person who could have some kind of worth or impact.”“It was the worst day of my life. Hello, Self-Reclaimers!A new pod episode dropped, you'll want to tune in! Promise!  We'll be welcoming guest Esther Loopstra to the pod today to talk about reclaiming creativity through the lenses of intuition, neuroscience, and flow. That's right, baby, it's a science and art combo meal!Esther is a brilliant creative mind, holding degrees in Counseling and Illustration, and has taught at Kent State University and Cornish College of the Arts. Her obsessive study of neuroscience, creative process, intuition, mindfulness, and flow make her a pro at connecting individuals to their intuition and creative spark. We cover a wide range of topics in this hour-long episode. You can look forward to hearing about the following: Connecting creativity to intuitionExploring your inner wisdomThe art of flow: heightened consciousness influenced by creativityCuriosity and lifelong learningOpen mode thinkingBrainwave statesHow spirituality and science work togetherTrusting yourself in mind and body, embodying intuitionJournal prompts to get in touch with intuitionRedefining traumaBringing compassion to ourselvesThe benefits of creating a morning process Pull Quotes“I grew up in a very dogmatic religion and church, and there was, like, abuse and trauma there. And so, you know, I think a lot of times people think that artists are very driven by their intuition, very flowy, you know, very connected to themselves. And that just wasn't the case. For me, I was, I knew I was always intuitive, but I was always driven by either what I should do, my logical mind, or what other people wanted me to do, or what God wanted me to do, things like that. I had all these voices in my head, but none of them were my inner voice.”“I think all of us have these points in our life where life asks us to go deeper. Let go of those layers, go deeper, to the authentic. So I just got to this point where it's like, you know what? I am just gonna listen to my intuition.”“Our intuition really, most of the time speaks through the body. If we are detached from our bodies, if we're like, really in our head, it's really hard for us to get into flow. So when we connect to our intuition, we're able to sense our body. They call it introspection. So feeling like what it feels inside your body, then we're able to get triggered into flow.”“If you've worked in corporate America, or, you know, you've taken any classes about how to brand yourself, or whatever, you know that we're taught that we need to kind of just use our logical mind to create, like a pretty package of what people want. We just have to figure that package out, right? Most of us are going into the creative process, whether it be a project or whether it be our own business, using your logical mind… It's based on slavery, on industralization, on consumerism. So we have to flip the model.”“When you are looking at things from that very narrow, analytical point of view, you're actually using the analytical brain, which actually bases all of its information off of what it's experienced before. So when you open up to open mode, you actually can tap into more of your brain, more of your subconscious, and that's where your intuition lives. Turning that to neuroscience, we now know that with 95 to 98% of our knowledge, approximately 90% of that is subconscious. That's where a lot of this knowledge lies. So when we can actually tap into that open mode, we're starting with all these possibilities first.”“it's just really, really fascinating to me. How, you know, how all the science is kind of coming together and showing us all these things. And some of them are really connected to deep spiritual truths that have been around for a long time.”“You have the answers within you. I think one of the hardest things is for people to trust, or begin to trust their intuition, because all of your life, you've been told that you need to look outside yourself, for answers for permission. It's not your fault. You know, it's hard to trust ourselves. But it's so worth it.”“We've been so conditioned to ignore our needs and our bodies, even as babies. We cry? We get reprimanded. We pull hair? We get reprimanded. We say what we mean, and we get pushed down, right? So we've been taught to kind of push our feelings down and ignore the things that our body needs. So, I say: just begin to listen to those impulses. And maybe write about how that feels.”“What has your intuition been nudging you to do?”“My whole process starts with curiosity, exploration, play, and that broader expansiveness, and then funneling down into focus.” Mentions and More Info: Esther's InstagramEsther's Website: Flow Into Authenticity Esther's art shopArtist Flora BowleyPsychologist Mihaly CsikszentmihalyiJohn Cleese and “open mode thinking”Brainwave statesDr. Gabor Mate - The Wisdom of TraumaResmaa MenakemScott Barry Kaufman And Bloom by Denise BoomkensKevin James Thornton Reclamation is yours,Megan

That really led me to jumping off the cliff and quitting my job.”“To me, art is really just freedom. It feels like you are coming from a place of wholeness. And when you're able to express yourself and do creative pursuits, especially when it's not tied to a specific outcome.”“Passion, for me, is really allowing yourself to be expressive and to trust that if you follow those threads in life that you're drawn to, and you show up authentically, that everything will come to you.”“I deserve to live a life that feels good. I deserve to share my work with others, I deserve to be in service.”“Art is so, so broad in my mind. It's more just about finding your passion and really feeling like you should go for it. And in order to kind of pinpoint when that transition needs to happen, it usually comes with, like, a low point in life, like a rock bottom of sorts, where you're just feeling like, stuck in life or not excited to go to work, you know, feeling like there's something more.”“There are two questions I have people ask themselves: What do you stay up at night researching and reading about learning about? And what would you do for free because you love it so much?” “It's all about holding on to the moments in life where you feel like you're in a river, and you're moving along, and you kind of forget hours in the day, and you're just kind of in the zone. And that's what being in flow feels like.”“Recognition of failure is okay. And nothing is actually ever failure. It's all just learning.”“The intelligence that exists within your body is also very much tied to your subconscious - it's a really powerful connection.”“[My photography sessions] are very much about the experience of learning to be in your body to be cradled by nature, and then to have this piece of art that represents that experience for you.”“You can't create from a place of chaos, a place of distraction.”“It's okay to trust yourself. Tamara uses her amazing storytelling superpowers to write about chronic illness and sleep disorders and pens a column that shares observations about life with MS for MultipleSclerosis.net.A fierce advocate and educator, Tamara is also a mother of two 20-something daughters, a wife of 34 years, and a resident in a beautiful Puget Sound ferry town. Simply put: she is a loving, smart, compassionate, AMAZING woman. I'm so excited to share her story with you!In this episode, we'll chat about lots of different things, such as:Cute woodland creatures in Puget SoundTamara's story of being diagnosed with Multiple SclerosisAttending school as a motherLiving, learning and writing with chronic illnessA little bit of MS 101, helping us learn about autoimmune disordersKnowing your purposeBelieving in yourselfValidating all feelings - even the icky onesReclaiming and reshaping identity after a diagnosisHaving agency over your body while still living with the knowledge that you have a chronic illnessAccepting the detours of life Read on for a couple of quote highlights and our shout-outs from the episode!“Here I am, I'm writing to help people! It's kind of a miracle. It was a really crooked path to get here, but it's mine and it's working. And I'm just going to make it work for as long as I can.”“There's this level of compassion I inherited from my mother. I see it in my own children now, which is so amazing. When I help other people, I just feel better about myself.”“Even if you're perfectly healthy and you have all the right marks in the milestones you want to make in your life, there's always going to be something in the way. There's a certain level of self-belief you have to have - you know, you can do it!”“I love the idea of feeling the feelings. They're all valid. Even if they're negative and uncomfortable, and you know, icky, they're all part of the process.”“I'm not sure we actually fight diseases. We treat diseases. What we fight is our own experiences and our own relationship to the disease, I think. For me, it's just ‘own it.' This is me, this is what I got.”“There's something that happens when you're diagnosed with something that you don't expect. It's this thing that I call ‘diagnosis mind,' and it's like this airless brain space in which you kind of lose your connection to hope and perspective because everything becomes attached to this diagnosis. It's like a parasite, almost.”“Reclaiming my identity in the face of MS has to do with getting past that diagnosis. I'm saying, ‘wait a minute, I'm the same person today that I was before I was diagnosed. So let's get back to that agenda. And then we'll just make some accommodations.'”“I've done some meditation… and one of the images I have is when you're sitting there, trying to get calm enough to meditate, you have all these passing thoughts to come in. I kind of envisioned them as a bird or an airplane that is in my field of vision, and then it just flies away. And I kind of think about that when I think about expressing my story or sharing my story. It's putting it on a jet airline and sending it off the screen. And it's out in the world. But it's not here with me now. Now I have a nice, peaceful sky.” Mentions and More Info:Tamara's InstagramTamara's author websiteTamara's work for MultipleSclerosis.netBuy Intention TremorInformation on Multiple SclerosisiConquerMSAccelerated Cure ProjectDisability Visibility by Alice WongCrip Camp movieTara HardyFUMS PodcastActive MSers About The HostMegan Colleen Johnson is a life coach, creative consultant, space holder, and speaker who helps passionate humans as they rise as the leader of their own life. There are so many things that I am still learning in the context of relationship.”“I believe in taking our full humanity with us wherever we go. And fear is just a part of being human. I think that we need to be with our fear and listen to what is coming up and be able to call our nervous system in order to not push forward, but progress forward, kind of, holding fear's hand.”“The salve for me, and for my heart, and for my soul, has been learning to connect to myself first. And from that place of being connected to myself, I've been able to connect to others.”“I actually tell my clients all the time that if you feel guilty when you start doing these things, that's normal, and use it as a sign that you're actually doing something different, rather than the patterns that you have been just running out unconsciously, all your life.
