Dr. Joe Squillace is my guest this week and we talk about the Jacksonville Lunatics, a baseball club that has not played since 1910. The team earned its nickname from playing in the same town as the Jacksonville Developmental Center that opened in 1851. However, were there concerns over this name, how did the team react to it, and why was chosen as its nickname? Squillace describes all that from his extensive research on the club.
What causes baseball team names to change over time? What makes a club's name acceptable during one period of history but then becomes unacceptable as time progresses? We're exploring that topic with Dr. Joe Squillace through the Lens of the Jacksonville Lunatics and mental asylums in the 19th Century. JoAnn Squillace and Stephen Drummond join WMV to talk about a list of reggaeton songs that have been brought into evidence to support the ongoing copyright infringement case against several latin artists, producers, publishing companies and record labels filed by Dancehall producer pioneers Steely and Clevie. Since this conversation over 1000 new songs were added to the lawsuit. The tracks which are alleged to have infringed upon the 80s dancehall riddim “Fish Market” produced by the duo are presented into evidence on the basis that they sample copies of the composition or simply copied the composition without permission. Reggaeton King Daddy Yankee alone is accused of copying the Fish Market composition on over 43 songs including his 41x Latin Platinum hit Con Calma with Snow which interpolates Snow's dancehall hit Informa. Brazilian singer Annita, who was just released from Warner Music after she ranted on social media about wanting to leave the label has 14 songs on the evidence list named Exhibit A. So far 107 summonses have been served to defendants this year alone as the trial is set to get under way but in a motion filed on Friday attorneys Jean G. Vidal-Font and Bradley J. Mullins who are reprenting latin superstar Juan Luis Morera Luna p/k/a Wisin and Drake real name Aubrey Graham, applied to dismiss requests for the artists to come to court to answer to the infringements on the grounds that they were not served at their right addresses. Bad Bunny and Drake‘s MÍA which has 1.4 billion YouTube views has been named as one of the songs that copied the Fish Market riddim. ”We bereaved are not alone. We belong to the largest company in all the world--the company of those who have known suffering.” - Helen Keller There are few things as isolating as grief, both in death and non-death loss. But at the same time, there is nothing so unifying, so completely shared and universal, as grief. Every person will experience grief from loss - a loved one in death, a job, a friendship, a marriage, an identity. Yet, grief and loss are concepts and experiences so seldom discussed and reckoned with. Brittany Squillace is on a mission to help people stop hiding from their grief, and instead begin honoring it by “instilling hope in the way you view, talk about, and navigate grief.” In our first IAS w/ Expert Voices episode of 2023, Shailushi & Kosha talk with grief-specialized licensed marriage & family therapist Brittany to talk about core concepts in grief processing. how to honor one's own grief journey, and how to support a loved one who is grieving. Brittany is a brilliant therapist, and she blew us away with her passion, compassion and conviction. Listen to this episode, and share it with someone you love. Then listen to Brittany's podcast, Exposing Grief w/ Brittany Squillace, and follow her educational YouTube channel, Exposing Grief. Trigger warning: death, grief, loss. The forces of privatization are very definitely on the march. From hunting access and opportunity to the age-old conflict over who has the right to fish or swim or boat on our waterways, privatization is arguably the defining debate in the United States right now. Join us for the story of an 80-year Colorado fly fisherman who is attempting to halt this slide toward privatizing stream and river access in his state, maybe once and for all. Law professor, attorney and public lands and water legal scholar Mark Squillace of the University of Colorado Law School guides us through a fascinating legal case that has ramifications for stream access and other public trust conflicts across the U.S.

What does it feel like to have a higher purpose? Music producer and legendary percussionist Pino Squillace found music after nearly dying from a drug overdose. The Italian native realized music was his calling while in rehab in Florence Italy and the rest is history. Nashville is now home for Pino and he has been busy developing his brand "The Other Side of 615," a sub-culture of the scene which he began developing while owning his coffee shop/music venue Cafe Milano. The famed Chet Atkins one of the pioneers of "Music City," who swayed the government from calling it "Country Music City" confirmed Pino's instincts for showcasing jazz and world beat musicians and to this day he continues on the path with their development in the studio and with their live performances. According to Pino there is only two types of music; good music and bad music. Although widely regarded as a member of the true A-list of dance music, both in terms of production, DJing and label management, it was a chance meeting led to Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito, an audio engineer/musician and working dj respectively, becoming Audiofly back in 2002. Middleton was, in typical boffin style, experimenting with live surroundsound while Saporito was acting as in-house music selector at prestigious London store Selfridges but the pair decided to down tools and throw everything at their shared love of house music. A bold move, but one which immediately began to pay off. The Audiofly name started to crop up regularly in the London scene and beyond via a series of edits, remixes and releases for underground imprints such as Fantastic House and Deleted. This initial hype led to Peace Division and DC10 resident Clive Henry to request an EP for the now legendary Low Pressings imprint. This EP, entitled “Release Yourself” caught many an ear and coupled with the DJs growing reputation as DJs, propelled Audiofly to a new level. Fairly quickly the pair’s groovy, melodic and undulating take on house music started to create a huge fan base, both in the press (DJ Magazine featured the duo on a special covermount CD), in clubs (Space Ibiza residency) and finally in production, with uber-imprints Get Physical, Mood Music, Kickboxer and Renaissance calling on their talents. Now, the duo are pushing their sound even further with a gig diary that takes in the likes of Fabric, Warung, Amnesia and countless other world reknowned clubs as well as a forthcoming album in the works but they still finding time to develop other artists via their own Supernature imprint. Only one year old, and Supernature has been a launch pad for artist such as Ali Nasser, Alex Niggeman, Bearweasel, Amelie and Boris Horel and commands the respect of labels ten times its age while their Flying Circus parties have become the highlights of both the WMC and Sonar festivals and their similarly named radio show for Proton Radio is a continued success. All of this sounds a lot, but Luca and Anthony are veritable steam trains of ideas and projects. Luca’s unrivalled enthusiasm, Anthony’s ability to think outside the box and an envious amount of talent to draw on mean there’s a lot more to come from Audiofly and their “Familia”. Well, its a been a few month since our last Podcast, but we are back with another exclusive mix from our 5th Birthday guests, Inland Knights. Dj’s, Producers and label owners, Andy Riley and Laurence Ritchie AKA Inland Knights hail from Nottingham UK, a city with a rich musical legacy, particularly for house music. They met in ’93 and cut their teeth DJ’ing for Smokescreen, the renegade soundsystem from which they drew their early inspiration. Smokescreen consisted of dj’s, lighting people, sound people, a truck, a P.A, a generator and general helpers. Old warehouses, woodland, fields, quarries and houses were utilised with the sole intention of having a good time…. for free! By the mid 90’s smokescreen could guarantee a crowd of hundreds in attendance at their parties, and their club nights became local institutions that ran for years with packed dancefloors, and still do to this day!. By ’98 Laurence and Andy had made the inevitable step into production and the same year the Dropmusic label was born with the release of ‘Inland Knights vol 1’. As Inland Knights Riley and Ritchie undertook a busy schedule in the studio to write tracks for Drop (almost all of the early output was entirely Inland knights, despite many monikers). Dropmusic has gone on to become one of the most highly regarded house labels in recent years(with 60 plus releases to date), and Inland knights have gone on to become one of the most respected production outfits in the house world, regularly taking on remix duties for fellow labels and producers. Highlights include the accliamed ‘Mohammed Ali’ remix for Faithless on Cheeky Records, cd compilations and remixes for NRK and Om Records, Inland Knights first full length album entitled ‘Creative Spaces’, and more recently Inland Knights album to mark 10 years of Dropmusic entitled ‘Dust till Dawn’. Currently, as well as remix and production commitments, the pair maintain a busy international Dj ‘ing shedule, and can be found most weekends playing somewhere in the UK or Europe, as well as regular visits to the U.S, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Andy also records under the Toka Project pseudonym, and Laurence under the alias Larry Fives. Catch Inland Knights at ......... For our 10th Podcast, we invite our guest for the Kerri Chandler afterparty next month @ Musiquarium, Hot since 82! ... Who is he and where does he come from? A Leeds based dj/producer that’s no stranger to the dance scene. Having given up on a very successful dj/producing career over 3 years ago, “Hot since 82” took time out to relax and start to love the dance music scene again. We caught up with him recently to explain why? “I just wasn’t feeling the music anymore! I was rocking up at clubs and just playing music, no emotion, no creativity, it was just work. I had to take time out. 3 years later “Hot Since 82” is born! New sound, new studio and a whole new generation of underground raver's keen to download and dance to the sound. “Let it ride” was the first to dominate the ears of avid underground house music lovers. With its bad bass line to the catchy vocal hook line that just won’t go away. Reaching number 3 on the deep house charts and being charted from everyone from Dj T, Audiofly, Solomon, Pete Tong, Joris Voorn to name a few. Dedicated to pushing the sound, expect “Hot” new original projects, remixes and collaborations with “Chris Carrier” “Andre Crom” “Off Recordings” “Noir music” “coats of arms” etc. Look out for all future tracks and remixes aswell as tour dates and pod cast's on “Hot Since 82’s” soundcloud @ soundcloud/hotsince-82 Tracklisting 1.
