In day-to-day practice, It's hard to imagine providing excellent hospice or palliative care services without access to a team social worker.  Social workers augment a team's ability to provide whole-person care, often aiding to identify and meaningfully address the wide variety of challenges and unmet needs faced by individuals and families facing serious illness. But are we really taking full advantage of ALL social workers have to offer our field? On today's podcast, we are talking with Barbara Jones – a national hospice and palliative care social work leader whose many accolades include being a founding member of the Social Work in Hospice and Palliative Care Network (SWHPN), a Professor of Direct Social Work Practice and Associate Dean for Health Affairs at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at UT Austin. Barbara highlights social workers' inherent leadership qualities and tasks us to consider whether our own team and organizational structures are allowing for optimal social work engagement and influence. Whether in direct practice or in research and academia, we should work together to help Hospice and Palliative Care Social Work meet its full potential.  by: Anne Kelly, LCSW, APHSW-C

In this episode, Barbara Jones, Founder/CEO of Lillii RNB Inc., shares her journey as a woman in technology and entrepreneur. Eight years in business, she shares her fears and courage that enabled her to propel and scale her company. She says she values her team. She is Founder of Freeing Returns, an Enterprise SaaS platform that helps retailers with store returns management. Today returns account for over $207B dollars in losses in the US alone. Last year, due to COVID-19, mass returns and retailers moving to e-commerce, this amount grew to over $325B, that's a 25% increase in losses for retailers. Freeing Returns is designed to solve these problems by connecting enterprise POS systems with the most innovative store returns management applications. We save retailers TIME and MONEY on system integration costs, allowing them to offer more cutting edge technology quickly! Barbara says “this is NOT our first Rodeo. My team and I have been on the founding team of retail technology startups that have exited and this is our 3rd one, we are going for a THREE-PEAT. Our technology moves store returns management to the cloud, making it easy for retailers to stay on top of store returns fraud.” About Barbara Jones: Founder/CEO of Lillii RNB Inc. is a retail technology product and services company. She has been in retail my entire life. She started out as a cashier , graduated from UT Austin with a Computer Science degree and was recruited by a Startup in Austin, TX that was building Point of Sale software. After that company was acquired, she founded Retail Technology System Integration firm in 2013. In the past 3 years, Lillii RNB Inc have consistently generated close to $1M in revenue. Over the years, Barbara noticed that we were doing the same integrations but for different retailers and different POS systems and most of the integration were for store returns. We decided to productize our offering allowing retailers to get pre-integrated, latest and greatest store returns management applications - that work with their existing POS systems. Barbara's hot nuggets: Set yourself up for a strong transition into entrepreneurship. As you figure out what you like to do in your business, leverage others by building a team to do the rest. Barbara is an ecologist and climber who was, until a few years ago, the Upland Ecologist for Wales involved in researching and advising on the ecology, conservation and management of the Welsh uplands. Her main interest is in arctic-alpine vegetation and she is the expert on the Snowdon Lily. Cwm Idwal is a special place for arctic-alpines and it was Barbara who worked to conserve these plants and increase the size of their populations by removing most grazing from the Cwm. Hopefully, you have spotted the difference there in recent years! Barbara often pops up on TV as ‘the strange woman who hangs off ropes looking at plants in the mountains. She has a long association with the BMC where she acts as an adviser on the interaction between climbing and the natural world. She taught outdoor education for a number of years and being an active climber she works hard to help reduce conflict between recreation and conservation interests. In recent years this has included setting up the ‘Groups in Gorges' initiative, the White Guide booklet, informing winter climbers how to reduce their impact on cliff vegetation and writing conservation notes for the Climbers Club guides in North Wales.

She's a encyclopedia of building and design knowledge which she often uses to help guide new builders and designers on natural building forums on facebook and in her blog.  In this episode we talk in-depth about the anatomy of straw bale walls, the key differences between thermal mass and insulation, and how to make best use of both for your location and climate. Sigi also gives invaluable advice for troubleshooting some of the trickier aspects of natural plaster application and mixing so keep a notebook handy for this one :)  Resources: https://www.facebook.com/buildnaturally/ http://www.buildnaturally.com/ "Building with Straw Bales" by Barbara Jones

Jamaican Diva Barbara Jones Dies at the Age of 62 Jamaican Diva Barbara Jones died last Friday at the age of 62 in Kingston Jamaica. Her soul influenced reggae ballads propelled her to popularity in the seventies along with Judy Mowatt and Pam Hall. Jones was born Barbara Nation in Kingston but grew up in Manchester, a rural parish located in central Jamaica. She began her musical career cutting a cover of American country singer Sue Thompson's Sad Movies with the Soul Syndicate Band for Randy's Records. Most of her popular songs included, Evie Sands' Angel in The Morning and Walk through This World with Me, originally done by Englebert Humperdinck and Dream Lover. Jones toured with Jimmy Cliff as a backup singer, before giving up secular music in the early 1980s. She became a Christian and eventually recorded four gospel albums. In May, Jones returned to her reggae roots by doing two shows in Brazil along with bassist/singer Lloyd Parks. They did shows in the cities of Teresina and Belem. Jones was shocked she had fans in Brazil, a vibrant market for so-called vintage reggae. “I didn't know my songs were so popular there. People always told me, I should go to Brazil as they love me there,” she told the Jamaica Observer during an interview after her return. Barbara Jones is survived by her husband, three children and three grandchildren. The thanksgiving service for her life is scheduled for the Gregory Park Baptist Church on January 10. Episode 55: Today's podcast is about social work with children who have cancer, also referred to as pediatric oncology social work. Although pediatric cancer is relatively rare event, making up less than 1% of the cases diagnosed annually, that single case affects the lives of countless others. From a treatment perspective, when a child is diagnosed with cancer, the whole family is diagnosed with cancer. Children are most likely to get cancer in their first year of life, and least likely between the ages of 5 and 14. If you are white kid in the United States you are nearly two times more likely to get cancer than if you are black. One in 300 boys and one in 330 girls will develop cancer before the age of 20. Every year 2500 children die from cancers with names like Acute Lymphoblastic Lukemia (cancer of the bone marrow - the most common childhood cancer), Hepatoblastoma (cancer of the kidney), neuroblastoma (cancer of the central nervous system), Ewings sarcoma (bone cancer), Hodgin’s Lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes), and Wilms tumor (cancer of the kidney). Notice that the most common forms of adult cancer such as lung, breast and colon are not included on this list. And it is not just that children get some cancers and adults get others. Among children, the cancers most often found in infants and toddlers are not the same as the cancers most often found in teenagers. For children today, getting a diagnosis of cancer is not the death sentence it once was. Before 1970 most children who got cancer died. Today, survival rates are nearly 80%. Currently there are about 270,000 survivors of childhood cancer. Consequently pediatric oncology social workers need to know as much about working with survivors of cancer as they do about issues of death and dying. To help me get a better idea of what being a pediatric oncology entails, I spoke with Dr. Barbara Jones, social worker and faculty member at the school of social work at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Jones is the immediate past president of the Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers, on the editorial board for the Journal of Social Work in End-of-Life and Palliative Care , and the co-director of the Institute for Grief, Loss and Family Survival at UT-Austin. Dr. Jones recently designed and taught the first social work course in the United States on psychosocial oncology. In today's podcast, Barbara and I talked about the role of a pediatric oncology social worker in a multidisciplinary team, with the child, with the family, in a hospital setting and in the community. We talked about best practices for working with kids with cancer and the role of research in pediatric oncology social work. She talked about practical and ethical issues in pediatric oncology social work such as consent and assent, how to accurately assess a child's pain, and how social workers can take care of themselves. Barbara told some powerful and moving stories about the work she's done with children who have died and children who have survived cancer. We ended our conversation with a discussion about how social workers get training in pediatric oncology social work, and what some resources are for social workers who would like to know more about working with children with cancer. One quick word about today's podcast: I recorded today's podcast using a Zoom H2 recorder on location at the Society for Social Work Research annual conference. If you listen closely you can hear the sounds of San Francisco in the background: a clock chiming, busses loading and unloading passengers, and even some pigeons congregating outside of the interview room. They don’t detract from the interview, but I wanted to give fair warning in case you were listening to this podcast anywhere were those sounds might be cause for alarm.
