We had the pleasure of interviewing Gorgol Bordello over Zoom video!International punk band Gogol Bordello & friends, led by Ukrainian frontman Eugene Hütz, release a collaborative single for charity, “United Strike Back.” Out on Hütz's own label, Casa Gogol, the track features punk & hardcore heavy hitters like Tre Cool (Green Day), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Joe Lally (Fugazi, The Messthetics), Roger Miret (Agnostic Front), Monte Pittman (Ministry), Sasha (Kazka) and Puzzled Panther. Hütz shares “Here, living legends of punk and hardcore who always meant so much to me, come together to show their much needed support for Ukrainian freedom fighters.” The powerful punk anthem fights back against imperialism and dictatorship, with a unifying cry of “That's the way united people strike back. That's the way your palace crumbles, that's the way the house of cards tumbles, that's the way the dictator's story ends, as we stand with brothers, sisters, lovers and friends.”All proceeds will go to Kind Deeds to help wounded Ukrainian defenders regain mobility with prosthetics. The release precedes Gogol Bordello's EU & US Summer Tour (stopping at The Atlantis on August 5).The band recently performed for Rolling Stone, The Recording Academy's Global Spin and WNYC's Soundcheck, with Ukrainian frontman Eugene Hütz continuing to be a “flagbearer of the cultural resistance…as the one-year mark of the war in Ukraine approaches” (CBC Radio's The Sunday Magazine).ABOUT GOGOL BORDELLOSince 1999, International punk band Gogol Bordello, led by Ukrainian frontman Eugene Hütz, has been filling up rooms with an energy that could run a whole city. Their latest album Solidaritine is no exception, going back to their hardcore roots: "With a Fugazi cover, Social Distortion references, and an appearance from H.R. of Bad Brains, Gogol Bordello's mission is well-studied and seemingly endorsed by icons of the genre," Consequence declares. The band has lit up stages around the world alongside System of a Down, Primus, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, dueted with Regina Spektor, and cut albums with legends Rick Rubin and Steve Albini. Russia's war in Ukraine is personal for Eugene & the band, who have been tirelessly advocating for Ukrainian solidarity, partnering with Nova Ukraine, ArtDopomoga, and putting together benefits with Patti Smith, The Hold Steady, Suzanne Vega, Magnetic Fields, Matisyahu and more. In the early aughts, Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything Is Illuminated was an inescapable book, launching the young author's career (and more than a few skeptics). This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Ukrainian-born artist, songwriter, and frontman of International punk band Gogol Bordello, Eugene Hütz. Hütz is a rare musical force, raucously illuminating stages alongside System of a Down, Rancid, and Dropkick Murphys, dueting with Regina Spektor, and cutting albums with Rick Rubin & Steve Albini. A lifelong lover of the punk scene growing up in Ukraine, Hütz found himself where he felt he belonged, in New York's Lower East Side in the late 90s, where he went to shows and later performed at the legendary CBGB. Crashing at friends' apartments and playing acoustic sets in NYC Ukrainian bars, his group, Gogol Bordello, steadily grew to an 8 piece multicultural band, combining Eastern, Western and Latin traditions. Hütz is a tireless advocate for Ukrainian solidarity, partnering with Nova Ukraine and ArtDopomoga, as well as putting together benefits with Patti Smith, The Hold Steady, Suzanne Vega, Magnetic Fields, Matisyahu and more. Hütz has also appeared in arthouse films such as Liev Schreiber's Everything Is Illuminated with Elijah Wood, Filth and Wisdom helmed by Madonna and the documentary Gogol Bordello Non-Stop. On June 13th, a new documentary about Gogol Bordello, entitled Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. An intimate, career-spanning portrait of punk legend Eugene Hütz, Scream of My Blood chronicles Hütz's childhood journey to the U.S., his rise to fame with Gogol Bordello, and his defiant return to Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Through never-before-seen photo and video archives spanning two decades — including concert performances, backstage moments, and intimate interviews — Scream of My Blood follows the epic journey of Hütz as he uses music as a rallying cry for the cultural identity of Ukraine while it continues its fight for sovereignty. Born in Ukraine to a family with Romani roots, Hütz fled his homeland during the Chernobyl disaster. Now, after years of exercising demons through his music, he journeyed home to face down the biggest demon of all. A wild punk-rock-doc that explodes off the screen, Scream of My Blood is a testament to the power of speaking your truth, no matter the cost. In this episode host Michael Shields and Eugene Hütz discuss what fans can expect from the new Gogol Bordello documentary and how the career-spanning look into the band found within Scream of My Blood came to life. They converse about Hütz's early days in New York City and the band's remarkable rise to prominence while exploring the bands that inspired Hütz's unique sound, what Hütz thinks about the war in Ukraine and his recent visit to the front lines, wild stories of life on the road, and so much more. The song which closes the podcast, entitled “United Strike Back” is a Gogol Bordello collaborative charity Song For Ukrainian soldiers featuring Tre Cool (Green Day), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Joe Lally (Fugazi, The Messthetics), Roger Miret (Agnostic Front), Monte Pittman (Ministry), Sasha (Kazka) & Puzzled Panther.

Gogol Bordello plays a mix of different genres (Punk, Romani folk, Latin rock, polka), though hints of ska can be found all over their songs. Frontman Eugene Hütz calls it "ska without doing ska" and says he almost doesn't think about the ska elements since he sees ska as so closely linked to punk music.  But on Gogol Bordello's latest album, Solidaritine, the ska elements are more overt than ever before. The reason: their new drummer Korey "Kingston" Horn has an impressive ska resume (Aggrolites, Tim Armstrong, See Spot, Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra, Rhythm Doctors) and we all know that the heart of ska is in those drum beats. Today we talk to the legend, Eugene Hutz about Gogol Bordello's relationship with ska. We also talk a lot about Ukraine--Eugene is a Ukrainian political refugee and has done much to support them against Russia's attack, including playing a recent secret show for Ukrainian troops at an undisclosed location. We also talk about his childhood growing up in Kyiv and going to super DIY punk shows and trading tapes with other local punks. Some favorites include Dead Kennedys, Devo, The Selecter, P.I.L., Bad Manners, Murphy's Law, The Specials, G.B.H.On this episode, we also talk about the immigrant experience that often comes up in Gogol Bordello's lyrics. It is often the product of necessity through displacement or economics. Eugene has talked at length about the idea of worldwide citizenship, so he squares this ideal with the global issue of anti-immigrant sentiments that have increased in recent years. Of course, we talk a lot about interesting music too including Sonic youth, Mano Negra, Russkaja, Cuatro Pesos de Propina and The Specials. Make A Move Podcast Make A Move Podcast showcases stories of how people have found creative ways to live...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify Support the show

Safran Foer proposes that we cut as many animal products as possible from our diet – until dinner. That way we can find comfort in the food we are used to eat, while still taking action on one of the biggest emission sourcesSafran Foer suggests that we have overlooked what we can do about climate change ourselves. Thus, while we cannot change human nature, we can make choices about what we eat.

Regardless of where you stand on the ethics of eating meat, the fact is, it’s a big part of the climate math. It provokes strong feelings all around, some of which may be contradictory within one’s self. And so much of the climate analysis is dependent upon how the animals were raised, marketed, and so on. It’s hard to speak (at least for some) with crisp lines. In this episode we wade into these details. Jonathan Safran Foer is the bestselling author of Eating Animals, Everything Is Illuminated, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast. Today, Jonathan joins Ross to describe his relationship with meat, explaining what inspired him to become a vegetarian at the age of nine and why he is willing to admit to moral failure when he grabs a burger at the airport. Jonathan shares his proposal for reducing our meat consumption as posited in We Are the Weather, weighing in on why it’s dangerous to make our food choices such a big part of our identity. Listen in for Jonathan’s insight on what makes climate change such a difficult story to tell and learn why Jonathan thinks reserving meat for dinner is a productive form of climate activism. David and Nicole watched it for the first time, and all three of us talked about things like the movie’s dramatic shift in tone, Liev Schreiber’s choices as a director, drivers with seeing-eye bitches, and the weirdness that is Gogol Bordello. What is food? It’s nourishment. It’s comfort. It’s culture. It’s art. For millions of people, it’s not something you waste much time thinking about. You eat what you’ve always eaten. What everyone around you eats. What you can afford. For others, every bite is a careful, conscious choice motivated by the drive to be thin, to impress your friends, or to do the right thing. In 2018, whatever our motivations, most of us live at a vast remove from the places and the ways our food is produced. We meet it gleaming and uniform on the shelves of our supermarkets. It’s cheap and it’s plentiful. Why look a gift horse...or cow...or pig...or chicken...in the mouth? Here’s why: While we slept, the farms that produce our food have grown and morphed and metastasized into something worse than sinister. Something that if you look too closely at it might just put you off your dinner. With every meal we eat, we’re making ethical choices that define us and shape the future of the planet. How long and on what grounds can we justify looking the other way? I’m here today with the writer Jonathan Safran Foer. He’s justly celebrated as a novelist, for books including EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED and HERE I AM,  but he’s here today to discuss EATING ANIMALS. It’s a new documentary narrated by Natalie Portman and based on Jonathan’s book of the same name. It's not Andrew's cup of tea, exactly, but we try our best to dive into where it works, where we think it doesn't quite get there, and why Foer has a reputation for being "overrated" in some literary circles. Everything Is Illuminated (2005) Few of us are as obviously obsessed with the past as Jonathan Safran Foer, the protagonist of writer/director Liev Schreiber's 2005 film. Except maybe Jonathan Safran Foer, real-life author of the 2002 novel, Everything Is Illuminated, also starring Safran Foer as one of its protagonists. Confused by this ouroboros of fact and fiction? Join us as we examine its braid and knit our own family histories into its weave.   Amichai - Parting Note As an addendum to this episode's discussion about memory, we'd like to point you to a small portion of a much larger poem entitled What Has Always Been by the Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai. It's found in this collection, as well as at least one other.   The stanza below speaks about the dangers of diving too deply into the past; we may drown in the details of history without truly understanding what they mean (if they have meaning at all). Amichai's invention of a "Field Guide to Human Beings" beautifully evokes this dilemma. We catalog and we catalog and we catalog, but it's no guarantee that we understand or that we fill our "empty heart."   2 Now two generations of forgetting have passed and the first generation of remembering has come. Woe to us that we have already come to remember because memories are the hard shell over an empty heart. Soon people will walk about the fields and cities and like nature lovers holding a Field Guide to Plants, they will hold a Field Guide to Human Beings. And they will call out to one another: Look, I found it, I wasn't mistaken, here are the distinguishing features, the typical color of eyes and of hair, the characteristic smile, thescent and the name, this one was a friend, a friend of a friend, that one a woman from long ago, this one is father-shaped, that one is me-shaped and you-shaped, when are you in bloom when do you wither, this is the scientific name, that's the common name among friends and lovers, this is a name without a man, and this, a man without a name. And that's the way it was.   Next Episode and Thank You  We'd love to hear feedback and thoughts; our e-mail address is chosenfilmspodcast@gmail.com.   Next month, we'll review The Golem (IMDb link), a 1920 film from the silent era directed by Paul Wegener and Carl Boese. Of course, many thanks to the Klezmer Rebs out of New Zealand for graciously allowing us to use the radiata mix of their song,"Yishama-o-rama," as our theme music.
