The apostle John calls the final vision of evil he sees, "Mystery, Babylon the Great: Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth." (Revelation 17:5) This title speaks to the true wickedness of who this Mystery Babylon represents and her incomparable influence over mankind. This is the preach I never got to give. The exposing, painful truth of Bruxy Cavey's sexually abusive history has been an incredibly difficult time for my own community at The Meeting House, the church with whom I served on the teaching team. It has also coincided with many other truths being revealed around Clergy Sexual Abuse, harassment and misconduct from other places as well - Brian Houston, and Christianity Today to name two others exposed just these last few days. It appears we are in a season where God is rooting out some deeply embedded sin. The temptation is to think this is a fight against flesh and blood. But it's much bigger than that. So, what do we do? Teaching NotesHope deferred makes a heart sick. Proverbs 13:12a “I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come, says the Lord Almighty.”Malachi 3:1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. Mark 1:1…as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”— “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'” Mark 1:2-3And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. Mark 1:4-5 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. Mark 1:6 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Mark 1:7-8 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Mark 1:9-11 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. Mark 1:12-13 Preparation: What is John's baptism about? The What: John's baptism with water looked forward to Jesus, who by his death would make possible the forgiveness of sins. “told the people to believe in the one coming after him.” (Acts 19:5) The So What: We all need to acknowledge our need for Jesus. Inauguration: Why did Jesus get baptized? The What: Jesus' baptism initiated his public ministry with the Father confirming his identity and the Holy Spirit coming upon him to empower his work. The So What: We need to acknowledge that Jesus is the one we've been waiting for. Confirmation: Why did the Spirit lead Jesus into the wilderness? The What: Jesus' time in the wilderness is a “do-over” of Adam's temptation in the garden. The So What: Jesus offers us the chance to have a “do-over” For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. 1 Peter 1:18-20Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
