In this powerful testimony, Brian Reinhart opens up about his deep struggle with Step 1 of the 12-Step journey. He reflects on his childhood, filled with intense anxiety and trauma, never feeling comfortable in any space. His addiction became a coping mechanism for years, but like many who struggle, he eventually reached the point where the drugs and alcohol stopped working, leaving him in pure misery. Despite going through 30 to 35 treatment centers—from short seven-day detoxes to six-month recovery programs—Brian couldn't escape the overwhelming truth: his life had become unmanageable.Step 1 in Alcoholics Anonymous asks us to admit we are powerless over alcohol (or any addiction), and that our lives have spiraled out of control. Brian's story highlights the essence of powerlessness, described so vividly in the AA Big Book. “We learned that we had to fully concede to our innermost selves that we were alcoholic. This is the first step in recovery.” Like Bill's story in the Big Book, Brian's lived experience with repeated attempts at recovery illustrates that true change begins when we stop trying to manage our addiction through our own willpower and start surrendering to a higher power. In this series, part of the Interactive Step Experience (ISE), Brian's story shows us that the journey starts with admitting defeat—and from that humble admission, real transformation begins. We invite you to reflect on his words and consider your own journey through Step 1.For more content, please like, comment, and share. Reading the big book reading the writing in the big book is like going to the gym exercising training staying tuned up. We not forget the lessons we learn under the lashes of alcohol. We help ourselves when we help others. Thank you for allowing me to help myself. Alcoholics Anonymous rocks.
In this segment, Joe McDonald delves into Step 1 of the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book, exploring the fundamental truth of admitting powerlessness over alcohol and the subsequent need for a higher power to restore us to sanity. Joe expands on the core message, highlighting the journey of a man who, against all odds, found life and sobriety through the realization that God dwells within, providing the power needed for recovery. The Big Book emphasizes, “We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.” This acknowledgment is the first step towards reclaiming our lives from the grips of addiction. Joe discusses how two individuals vouched for the transformative power within, leading to a miraculous change in someone who once seemed beyond help.“Without help, it is too much for us. But there is One who has all power—that One is God. May you find Him now!” (AA Big Book, p. 58).Join us as Joe McDonald reads and expands on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, offering profound insights and practical guidance to help you on your recovery journey. In this rendition of The Way Out I'm ecstatic to bring you my interview with Recovery Advocate and Author of the soon to be released book entitled Slow Dancing with the Devil: A Son's Substance Use Disorder, A Mother's Anguish, Susan Bartz Herrick. I've learned that often in life less is more, and this is one of those times. Susan's message that Substance Use Disorder is not a moral failing, it's a legitimate and diagnosable disease and Recovery is absolutely possible comes through in such powerful and enlightening fashion that anything I could say on the front end would only serve to diminish her quite salient, much needed, and incredibly well articulated message. So without further ado, Susan shares her and her son's journey with substance use disorder and recovery, including the heartbreaking death of her Son, who was under no uncertain terms, poisoned as you'll hear firsthand in the compelling and necessary Recovery discussion that is about to unfold before your very ears so do be sure you listen up. In this rendition of The Way Out, I'm ecstatic to bring you my interview with two persons in long term recovery and the co-founders of Recess Games, Alex Peacock and Nolan Wright. The mission of Recess Games is to pair those in the community with people in recovery who are seeking healthy avenues to have good clean fun while building a meaningful and purposeful life. The mission of Recess Games is near and dear to our hearts here at The Way Out, as we know how essential connection, community, purpose, and fun are to promoting meaningful and sustainable Recovery. Nolan and Alex each share their respective journeys to and through Recovery to this point with us in the inspirational and candid fashion, which is just the way we like roll here on The Way Out Podcast. Their respective experiences both prior to and in Recovery share much in common and perhaps most instructive is what is unique about their experiences as they entered and traversed their early Recovery. Nolan had a spectacular spiritual experience followed by a profound conviction to do whatever it takes to Recover. Alex experienced a far more gradual awakening, and in the beginning didn't especially want to even be in Recovery, but the more distance he put between him and his last use the more he found himself changing and truly wanting Recovery. Each no less powerful and each no less meaningful than the other, both just transformational, both just as meaningful, and both proof positive that Recovery is not just possible, but unquestionably worthwhile especially if you're having a lot of fun along the way which is unquestionably what Nolan, myself, and Alex had in the tremendous recovery discussion that's about to unfold before your very ears so listen up. Surrender to the Now: Get Grounded in Recovery The 12-Step Buddhist Podcast Episode 107 The famous now is where we want to be. But wanting gets us nowhere. The root of suffering, said Buddha, is attachment. To free ourselves, we must cut it out at the root. The root lies in our very desire to be somewhere, anywhere, other than right here, right now. As addicts we've tried to be somone else, somewhere else for our own survival. In recovery we need to learn heart opening, mindful skills to be our own best healers. In service to this vital necessity of practice, let's not gloss over the now, objectify the now, reify or even deify the now. Rather, let's follow the advice of the AA Big Book, which says that we had to let go absolutely, or the result was nil. Therein lies the conundrum, and the very core opportunity for practice. Let's talk about it. Books mentioned: Wisdom of the Desert Fathers and Mothers: Ancient Advice for the Modern World Desert Fathers and Mothers: Early Christian Wisdom Sayings, Merton Total Mind Power

Get, your anti disease
In today's episode Danny and Catherine Mullaney are returning for a follow up interview. We will pick up the conversation from where we left off last time. (To hear their part one please go to episode #138) They live one day at a time. When they stay in the stream of life they will fall and get up, fall again and get up, etc. Falling is a part of recovery. As explained in their first discussion their life's motto can be summed up from the AA Big Book, “The spiritual life is not a theory. You have to live it.” Today Danny and Catherine will unpack that a little more by talking about the 12 steps which can be described as Trusting God, cleaning house, and helping others. The joy of living or the sweet life as Siobhan likes to say is found by living honestly in community which requires internal house cleaning and being of service to their fellow man whether they are in recovery or not. As Catherine said in our initial interview, “abstinence from sugar and flour is but a beginning.” So let's go a little deeper with the Mullaneys today in living life on life's terms. The Mullaneys have been married for 34 years, have 3 adult children and 6 grandchildren. Catherine is a poet and a farmer in training, formerly an educator. Dan became an RN in sobriety and is nearing the celebration of 25th year of nursing. Thanks for listening! If you enjoyed this episode and were inspired in some way, I would love to hear from you. Download your FREE episode guide➡️➡️➡️https://www.luminousrecoveryyoga.com/accept Maybe you can relate—The end of the year always brings up a lot of reflection time for me. Honestly, if you would've asked me this time last year how my life would look a year from now in December 2022, nothing could've prepared me for all the changes that were to come. I've left relationships, a business, started a new business, I moved, and I even saw Lizzo in the front row. (I could see her boob sweat. I was so close!) There have been (and still are) many moments of uncertainty. Many moments of disbelief that my life looks so different than it did this time last year. And yet, if there's one thing I've had to do in order to keep moving, it's accept the things I cannot change. That's why this week's episode of the Luminous Recovery Yoga podcast is about learning to accept the things I cannot change. This phrase comes from a line in the serenity prayer. Over the course of the next few episodes, I'll be breaking down the serenity prayer into three components. If you're not familiar with the Serenity Prayer, it's a jam packed little goodie that helps in many of life's sticky situations, and it goes like this: Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Often times, in a moment of distress over people, places, things and situations over which I cannot control, I take a moment to break down a situation into three components: 1. Things I can't change. 2. Things I can change. 3. Wisdom to know the difference. Maybe you can relate—-when I am not in acceptance of life's circumstances, I can start to spin out. When I'm wishing things were different, I am not being present to life as it is, and it causes suffering of varying degrees. When I'm in a pit of despair—aka suffering—I am not open to the gift of serenity. One of my favorite quotes from the AA Big Book on acceptance says: “When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation—some fact of my life—unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment.” (Mic drop
I have always worked a simple program because that is the only way I'm able to do it. I wasn't able to write my inventory like the AA Big Book recommends with the columns system. But on page 109 in the SA White Book the directions were simple which allowed me to do my inventories. I think in pictures so when I read in the White Book, “Work the Steps, work the Steps, work the Steps,” I pictured myself at a desk doing inventories and I get overwhelmed. I'm much more comfortable with the term applying the steps than working them.
We are into our third year! To kick it off, we invited Pete B back to talk about the history of Narcotics Anonymous. If you know about 12 step groups, I bet you know a lot of Alcoholics Anonymous, but what do you know about NA? Well, we knew next to nothing. Pete B was involved with writing the original text of NA back in the early 1980s. Who better to talk about how NA started.Like many 12 step groups, the first NA groups used the AA Big Book and their steps to get clean. But it was a long road to the founding of one branch in the 1950's to a more structured program in the 70's. It took until the early 80's for NA to get their own literature and that's when growth happened. You'll love this oral history of NA from Pete B. He's so grateful for his program and decades of sobriety, he will pull you into the story of this other fellowship.Support the showIf you love our podcast, SMASH that follow button! Herb was given the gift of freedom from alcohol February 21, 1984. As the result of the application of the Twelve Steps as contained “precisely” in the AA Big Book he experienced a profound spiritual awakening in 1988. Since then, he has been very involved in carrying the message of recovery through presentations, facilitating workshops, and leading retreats. He has authored 3 books (see below) Many have found them helpful for accessing the instructions and confirming the process contained in the Big Book for experiencing and sustaining a spiritual awakening.Herb is widowed, has three adult children, seven grandchildren, and lives in RanchoPalos Verdes, California.Reco12 is an organization with the mission of learning and sharing the similarities of addiction of all kinds and the similarities of recovery from all afflictions and addictions, and gaining and sharing tools and hope from others who are trudging this road. Episode 380– What is Sober? Today we have Shrene. She is 46, from Arizona, and took her last drink on September 10, 2019 AF Photography Class for beginners will start in August. Details to follow. AF Ukelele Course #2 starts in June. Exact Nature: https://exactnature.com/RE 20 Highlights from Paul Paul talks about the word sober. For this podcast, sober refers to alcohol, because alcohol is what got Paul behind the microphone to launch Recovery Elevator. Paul suggests not getting too attached to any idea of what sober looks like. It's not about the substance, but the freedom you have from the substance. Try not to judge others for their definition of sober, because it's rarely black and white. When you judge others, you judge yourself and create separation. Defining sobriety can be a fool's errand. Sobriety is living authentically. Sobriety is not being a slave, to a substance, behavior, or action. Sobriety is living your life how you want to live, living with a connected head and heart, recognizing beauty, art, sunsets, a different vibration. Sobriety is hope, taking off the chains, meeting yourself, a manageable life. Sobriety is “downgrading additions.” Sarah Hepola - Blackout https://www.amazon.com/Blackout-Remembering-Things-Drank-Forget/dp/1455554588 If you remove alcohol and aren't ready to say goodbye to everything else, go slow, take your time, and listen to your body. There is no right or wrong way to do this, and there is no generally accepted definition of sobriety. At Recovery Elevator, we accept all versions of sober. We accept all versions of you. Better Help: www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month [12:04] Shrrene is married with two children, two dogs and is a lunch lady who makes lunch for 700 kids daily. Shrrene remembers drinking as early as age three to four. She drank through her high school years. She stopped drinking when she got married at age 16 and she stopped drinking until after her son was born at age 26. She was a casual drinker. At 40, she started drinking daily. She would sneak her drinking, hide bottles, and hide in her closet to drink. She quit during her pregnancy. She had open heart surgery at 39, then had a stroke. At age 41 she had a second open heart surgery but continued to drink. Her husband brought an AA Big Book home from an Al-Anon meeting. Her husband joined Celebrate Recovery and she joined him for meetings. She began to moderate but went back to field research regularly until 2019. Shrrene got sick and tired of being sick and tired. Prayer was instrumental for getting the desire to drink lifted. Now she doesn't have a desire to drink, other than the fleeting thought and she plans to stay active in recovery and help others. Shrrene slowly started talking to her husband, in AA meetings, journaling and learning to share. Journaling helped when she was too afraid to talk to others and it is a tool that still serves her today. Attending AA and CR meetings were helpful, but Shrrene was reluctant to share. When she learned to open up, she felt less alone. She found the similarities in the stories of others. She encourages listeners to keep trying and never give up. Odette's Summary Odette reminds us “we can do hard things”. We can't do hard things and be hard on ourselves. Chose yourself, chose kindness and be your own cheerleader. Remember that you are not alone and together is always better. Pastor Meg Mcbride hops on the podcast, she shares her story of recovery, and how she founded Hope Recovery-a Faith Community. Our Mission At Hope Recovery Church, we recognize and rely on the foundation forged by the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, who laid down the program of recovery in the AA “Big Book,” by which millions of people have found freedom in the 12 step spiritutal program of action. Using the program of recovery, we seek solution, wisdom and counsel to live lives of freedom and usefulness that connect us to God and the world. Our ultimate goal is to be of service to God, individuals and their families who are still sick and suffering from the effects of addictions and to share with them the GOOD NEWS to help them discover freedom, peace and a RETURN To Genuine LOVE. She shares her recovery nuggets at the end of the podcast. An in depth study of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, chapter 4 “We Agnostics”.
Danny and Catherine Mullaney met early in AA recovery as young adults. Over the last 3 decades they have been living by the spiritual principles laid out in the 12 steps. Despite that, the addiction to sugar has been a thorn in their side throughout. Catherine has been addicted to sugar most of her life, been on many diets since she was 8 years old, but until last year has never attempted to arrest the addiction. Danny has made attempts to abstain from flour and sugar but has never been able to maintain long term recovery in that area. Coming to terms with sugar being a psychoactive substance has enabled them both to yield their addiction to sugar the way the alcoholic must surrender the drink. Once again, these two have another reason to trust and rely upon their Creator. Their life's motto is taken from the AA Big Book, “The spiritual life is not a theory. You have to live it.” In this leg of their ongoing recovery their food plans differ but their commitment to exquisite self-care holistically is the same. The Mullaneys have been married for 33 years, have 3 adult children and are currently awaiting the arrival of their 6th grandchild. Catherine is a poet and a farmer in training, formerly an educator. Dan became an RN in sobriety and has entered his 25th year of nursing. Thanks for listening! If you enjoyed this episode and were inspired in some way, I would love to hear from you. As we have learnt Sobriety provides so many benefits, so what about Sober dating? King13 invited sober single sister's Namaste and Squirrel Monkey to shake this subject up. How is dating different? No Dating first year. (It is not in the AA Big Book). Where do you meet potential partners? What attracts you now? What to do on dates? Boundaries, your choices, how much alcohol effects relationships? Whatever way your love life falls there is always hope. We have to be cautious and we deserve to be happy. Any friend groups that may have suddenly disinvited you can only lead to true friendships and higher standards. How about a ZOOM date? No Sippy No Slippy. Not Another Drop No matter What. Mark Farley has been active in the recovery fellowships for almost 30 years. Mark found his Spiritual connection and his sobriety through the Salvation Army ARC program in 1991. They helped him to get back on his feet and begin putting his life back together. Mark wound up going back to school to get his Drug and Alcohol Counseling Certificates and went through the Salvation Army's Adjutant program to earn a Pastoral certification. He worked at the Salvation Army for 3 years running their Drug and Alcohol Rehab program and managing the homeless shelter in Sacramento California. Mark has a passion for helping others to overcome their addictions and afflictions as well as working with the homeless. Mark went on to build a very successful business that coordinated with hospitals and drug and alcohol treatment centers to medically manage detoxes before realizing his passion for helping the helpless, hopeless, hurting, and addicted. He earned his MBA and Pastoral Ordination while co-founding and building the 501c3 Furniture Bank, Inc. with his wife Tami. Mark is the Senior Pastor and Founder of Faith Through Works Fellowship, an outreach church that works primarily with the homeless, helpless, hurting and addicted. Known as the “cussing Pastor” you won't find Mark preaching from a pulpit on a Sunday! He prefers to be in the rehabs, shelters, and centers that helped him to find his way long ago. As Mark grew older his weight became an issue and in time lead to health issues. Like most folks, he tried every diet, food program, pill, and powder, but had no success. Mark tried to find a solution within the existing 12 Step based eating disorder and food programs but struggled to adhere to their suggestions. November 26, 2017, Mark hit his bottom and in desperation found Bitten Jonsson through the internet. Bitten responded to Mark's request and helped him to see that he was addicted to sugar and bad carbs just like his addiction to drugs and alcohol! The light at the end of the tunnel appeared! Mark continued to work with other existing food programs but found the 12 Step approach severely lacking. At the encouragement of Bitten and others, Mark decided to create what he was seeking. Mark is the founder of SCAA – Sugar and Carb Addicts Anonymous. A 12 Step Fellowship that has been meeting via Zoom since May of 2018. With just under 500 active members worldwide, there are 19 meetings weekly. The SCAA fellowship works from the AA Big Book and follows the 12 Steps as their suggested way to recover. Mark has been married to Tami for 26 years. They have a 23-year-old daughter Kai and reside 1n Queen Creek Arizona. Mark has published 3 Daily Devotionals and (3) 12 Step Recovery Workbooks.
