Today we have Kathy. She is 57 years old from Phoenix, AZ. She took her last drink on October 21st, 2024.   Sponsors for this episode include: Better Help – 10% off of your first month   Registration for one of our best international sober travel itineraries opens today, as we are going back to Peru October 4th – 15th, 2025. We are starting off in Cusco, then head into the sacred valley, and of course we're doing the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.   Next Monday our first ever AF Songwriting Course starts at 8pm EST. Connect with other sober musicians and improve your own song writing skills.   [02:43] Thoughts from Paul:   At the end of last week's episode, I discussed how certain chapters in our lives might be closing, particularly those involving drinking and all the associated antics. As Yung Pueblo poetically expressed, endings are a natural part of life. The universe thrives on cycles, where every beginning anticipates an eventual end. Embrace this closure, grieve it, if necessary, write a farewell letter and consign it to the flames if it helps. But remember, alongside the end of the partying comes the end of hangovers, bloating, puffy eyes, heartburn, and a myriad of other unpleasant side effects.   Let yourself mourn the end of this chapter. For me, the cessation of drinking heralded a new beginning in September 2014. Let's explore what awaits after setting the bottle aside—a life free from elevated liver enzymes.   Five months ago, I asked our Instagram followers to describe sobriety in three words. The prevailing themes were peace, energy, and presence. I can't predict your future, but I can assure you that whatever it holds, you'll face it with more vitality, tranquility, and mindfulness. This journey is far from solitary, as more Americans are reducing their alcohol intake.   So, as one party ends, another begins, brimming with the promise of a healthier, more vibrant life.   [06:09] Paul introduces Kathy:   Kathy is 57 years old, is divorced and lives in Phoenix, AZ with her husky mix named Mario. She works in big data analytics. For fun, Kathy enjoys walking her dog, hiking, riding a mountain bike, kayak and read. She enjoys memoirs, thrillers and enjoys Quit Lit.   Kathy says her drinking was in the moderate category for many years. In her forties she became part of a friend group that enjoyed drinking and spending time on the lake together. Kathy was comfortable letting her hair down and didn't have any fears of becoming an alcoholic.   Kathy did begin to question her drinking after it started noticeably affecting her sleep and how she felt the next day. She explored some Quit Lit and since her drinking didn't look like the author's, Kathy decided it wasn't bad enough to stop completely but would try to cut back a bit and skip days here and there.   When Kathy was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, the doctors put her on pills she couldn't drink with. It was a relief to her to have to stop, but was surprised how little support others would have for her not drinking. After her oncologist told her she could drink a little, she started drinking again. A constant cycle of ramping up and ramping down began.   After some issues with her white blood count, Kathy had to quit for three weeks awaiting a blood test. She decided to join Café RE for support to quit drinking. Kathy really identifies with gray area drinking and has found stories from other people helpful in continuing her pursuit of quitting drinking. She prefers her life without alcohol and hopes to continue. She says her sleep has improved and she looks forward to lifting weight again, traveling and being cancer-free.   Kathy's parting piece of guidance: if you're questioning it, just start talking to sober people, join Café RE, seek out more podcasts, whatever.     Recovery Elevator Alcohol is shit and we both know it. Millie is based in Kent and quit drinking in her 20s following her first few years working as a journalist. She dived headfirst into drinking when she first arrived at university and found it difficult to slow the pace after graduating. One day woke up and decided that enough was enough. Since then she has become the founder of Sober Girl Society which is an enormous community of women coming together to de-stigmatise the choice to go alcohol free. Not only that, but she is also one of our favourite Quit Lit authors having already released the Sober Girl Society Handbook and her much anticipated upcoming release ‘Booze Less: Rethinking Drinking for the Sober & Curious - A Guided Journal' is out next month. In this episode, I challenge the conventional approach to sobriety by discussing the hidden downside of quit literature, aka quit-lit—books focused on stopping drinking. While these books aim to inspire, they often keep our minds fixated on alcohol. Psychological studies show that what we read can shape our thought patterns, so constantly reading about alcohol can inadvertently reinforce cravings. Instead, I recommend focusing on personal development. Tune in to hear my top 5 authors: Jen Sincero, Bob Proctor, Napoleon Hill, Dr. Joseph Murphy, and Dr. Maxwell Maltz. Plus, I share a sneak peek into my upcoming book: “The Last Quit Lit Book You'll Ever Need.” Get ready to rethink your reading habits and finally put alcohol in the past. #soberinspiration #sober #alcoholabuse

This is an extra special episode of The Sober Edge Podcast - we are inviting ALL of you to meet author Laura Cathcart Robbins.   First, you will meet Laura in this special podcast episode. Robbins is the author of Stash: My Life In Hiding. This powerful book takes us on the emotional journey of Laura's addiction to sleeping medication and alcohol. I must share that I was riveted as I read her account of navigating being a Hollywood wife and mother and board president of the private school her children attended WITH sourcing extra refills of Ambien.    I know that many of us had a relationship with alcohol that included 'hiding', whether it was hiding the amount you drank, or the fact that you were drinking again. This is part of why Laura's story is so powerful. Her honest telling of her story includes the parts of her past that she was hiding from everyone in her life. 'My Life In Hiding' is about so much more than hiding one's addiction, it includes learning how to be honest with ourselves.   During this interview, Laura and I were careful not to divulge any 'spoilers' as the book is full of twists and turns. The one 'spoiler' is that we know Laura is ultimately triumphant over her addiction and, like many of us, her life looks completely different now. This book is ultimately a love story, with her children, a surprise relationship but, most importantly, with herself.   Laura Cathcart Robbins is the best-selling author of the Atria/Simon & Schuster memoir, Stash, My Life In Hiding, and host of the popular podcast, The Only One In The Room. She will be joining us in our Author Spotlight Special inside The Sober Edge Book Club.   Show Notes HERE Register to attend our Author Spotlight and meet Laura HERE

In this edition of The Way Out I'm delighted to bring you my interview with person in long term recovery, wellness advocate and author of the book Bamboozled: The Guide to Getting EVERYTHING You Want in Life by Giving Up Alcohol, Ken Middleton. Ken shares his journey to and through sobriety to this point with us in an exceptionally enlightening and inspiring fashion. For Ken, getting sober wasn't born out of debilitating alcoholism leading to an ultra-low bottom of despair and hopelessness. No, Ken reckoned with his relationship with alcohol, despite not having severe internal or external consequences and essentially asked himself one big question. What would life look like if he didn't drink? Out of that question an experiment was born, and Ken realized that though Alcohol wasn't destroying his life in the classic crash and burn style, what ken discovered was all the things alcohol was preventing him from being and doing. Said in another way, Ken had a remarkable realization: Alcohol was limiting him and was nothing short blocking him from being the best version of himself. Ken's story is proof positive we don't have to be in the depths of addiction in order to benefit from abstinence, sobriety, and recovery. We can ask ourselves questions similar to what Ken asked himself, such as what could life be like if like if I didn't drink or use for a period of time? Ken suggests 90 days, but you choose the amount of time and then do something we talk often about on this show, run the experiment, and see what happens. You may find you were more dependent on it than you thought and your drinking or use was no mere habit, or you may find that though perhaps you weren't dependent on it, alcohol or substances were acting like a governor on an old school muscle car and keeping your potential pent up, or you may find out something all together different. The only way you'll find out is by running that experiment yourself, and might I suggest you take it in 24-hour segments at a time saying “Self, I'm not going to drink and/or use today”. Then start engaging in a recovery and/or wellness program and begin building a meaningful life filled with purpose as you become increasingly closer to the person you feel called to be. To that end, you'll find plenty of practical tools, insight, and inspiration in Ken's story, which about to unfold before your very ears so listen up.  The Power of Books. I think we have all been transformed by a book - transported to a make-believe world or moved by powerful history. I believe in the power of books because books allow me to explore a life that might look wildly different than mine and also because they show me what is possible in my own life.  And, books can be powerful connectors, showing us in big and small ways how we are humans having a human experience and not so different after all.  On this alcohol-free journey many books have been written about the science of addiction, and so many memoirs have been authored  that a new genre, 'quit-lit' , has emerged. That is the power of books! In this podcast episode, I share some thoughts about what books mean to me and I chat with my friend and partner, Sarah Showard about our new offer: My Sober Girlfriends' Book Club. Episode 425 – What Recovery Pathway is Right for Me?   Today we have Doug. He is 59, from Buena Vista, CO and he took his last drink on July 28, 1982.   Join Recovery Elevator in Atlanta over Memorial Day weekend for a fun conference style meet up at the Marriott in Alpharetta.  This event is all about getting your connect on and it will be a fun time.  Spouses or loved ones are encouraged to attend the Sunday night event and Silent Disco afterwards!   [2:30] Thoughts from Paul:   When building your recovery portfolio, a good goal is 50% external and 50% internal. At first, the internal work may be too big of an ask, but as your nervous system settles down, you want to aim for a balanced split. Here are some quick examples of what I mean when I say external vs internal:   External: Driving to an AA meeting, or hopping on a Café RE zoom chat Phoning a sober friend Working with a sponsor   Internal: Meditation Journaling Reading Quit-Lit   When building out your recovery I recommend this 5-tiered approach: 1. Community – AA, SMART, Café RE, therapy, sober friends. Burn the Ships! 2. Action/Movement – Chemicals of wellbeing, endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin are released when we move.   3. Inner Peace – Meditation, breathwork, creative ventures, writing, time in nature. 4. Knowledge – Podcasts, Quit-Lit, learning about new things in and out of recovery. 5. Universe – This is not religion, but it is the spiritual component of recovery.   Better Help:  www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored           [11:55] Paul introduces Doug:   Doug had his last drink on July 28th, 1982, when he was 19 years old. He lives in Buena Vista, CO and is married and they have two adult children. He has worked in upholstery, cabinet building and installations, and has built some houses with his son. He enjoys the mountains, biking and riding his motorcycle.   Doug grew up in a normal family and wasn't exposed to heavy drinking. His first experience with alcohol was when he was 4 years old when he remembers having a few sips of his mother's drink. He felt the warm glow and really liked it. Later when he was 12, a friend of his stole a bottle of liquor from his parents and while his friends were mixing it with soft drinks, Doug drank straight from the bottle. He felt something click – suddenly, he felt normal, and like everyone else.   When Doug was 16 his mother passed away and the drinking escalated and continued to be excessive after graduation. Some friends invited him to Alateen meetings, and he started attending weekly. Once a month AA members would come in and share their stories. He started identifying with some of the stories which got him to start question his drinking. He realized that he was becoming less like the person that he wanted to be.   When one of his former drinking friends disappeared from the meetings, he found out that they were working on sobriety with AA. That friend was a speaker at one of the meetings, and Doug noticed that they looked healthy and at peace. He chose to speak to him afterwards and expressed an interest in possibly attending AA but wasn't quite ready for it.   Doug finally accepted the invitations to attend and was planning to go to a meeting on July 29th. The night before he found himself drinking and when he saw himself in a mirror started asking himself why he was drinking. He didn't have a good answer for that.   AA has been a big tool for Doug, along with volunteer work. He knows that if he had continued drinking, he would not have had the life he has. He believes in counting blessings, finding things to be grateful for and putting sobriety before everything else.   Cafe RE  Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the set-up fee. You can find some tips and can sign up for a $50 off promo code.   [2:15] Highlights from Kris:   Kris enjoys living in a small town where everyone helps one another, and the pace is rather consistent. He and his wife were recently on a trip to the city, and it was busier than usual which created sensory overload for Kris. He found himself in the candle section of Target taking a moment and saying the serenity prayer. It helps him shift his thinking that it's all about him and reminds him that he can exist better with others.   God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change The courage to change the things I can The wisdom to know the difference   It doesn't fix everything right away, but it assists with pausing and choosing how to react going forward.   Better Help:  www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored   [10:15] Kris introduces Bethany:   Bethany is 34, has two kids and a fiancé. She just graduated college last year, works as an account manager for a car parts company. For fun she likes to play video games and plays often with her fiancé. She also enjoys running, camping, travelling and quality time with friends and family.   Bethany wasn't exposed to alcohol much growing up. She had her first drink when she was 14 and got sick so she didn't try it again for a while. Started going to high school parties but didn't drink when she was playing sports. She found herself in a toxic relationship with a boy she met in church. After a messy break up she stopped going to the church and ended up feeling the loss of community as a result. After going away to college, she started partying as a way to escape her depression.   By her sophomore year she stopped going to classes and for the next year, her drinking escalated a good bit more. She met her ex-husband around this time. She ended up getting pregnant and then they got married and had another child. She says they weren't compatible, and they didn't have a healthy relationship. Bethany feels she didn't have a good real-life example of strong relationships growing up because her mom died when she was four and her dad never remarried. Her husband was in the military where the drinking culture is very normalized, and they drank a lot. Towards the end of the marriage, she realized that the drinking was getting in the way of her parenting, and it was hard to take any breaks from it. Everyone she was around drank like she did, so no one ever said anything to her about it. For a while she stayed stuck in the cycle of drinking too much, taking a few days off and then starting back again.   She met her fiancé at a friend's party. He is a normal drinker and would sometimes call her out for her drinking. Bethany says her behavior towards him and others could be abusive, so she started trying to set rules around her drinking. It wasn't until an incident that had her feeling bad about not being present for her kids prompted her to think about trying to quit drinking.   A Google search led her to finding RE and she discovered a few episodes that really resonated with her. For the first time she realized she wasn't alone and felt hope for the future. She joined Café RE for support and accountability and started reading a lot of Quit Lit. Soon into recovery she found herself enjoying life without alcohol and enjoying her children playing sports. Her grades improved and she graduated with honors. She has started making friends that she enjoys spending time with.   [52:25] Kris' Summary   Telling our stories is a brave thing and can help a lot of people. In this edition of The Way Out I'm pleased to bring you my interview with author of the new book High: Confessions of a Cannabis Addict, editor of The Addiction Recovery E-Bulletin, and Producer of the 14 year old Reel Recovery Festival, Leonard Lee Buschel. With 28 years of continuous sobriety, Leonard shares his journey to and through recovery to this point with extraordinary insight combined with great storytelling, as you might expect from a newly minted author who's been sober as long as Leonard has been. One of the greatest pearls of wisdom Leonard bestows upon us is the phenomenon of slowbriety, which has been invoked on this podcast more than a few times, yet bears highlighting, nonetheless. As the term infers, slowbriety is a term that describes our slow but sure emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental evolution in Recovery that results in an increasingly sound mind, body, and soul and the sounder we are in these three areas of being, the more fulfilling and rewarding our recovery and ultimately our lives are so listen up. In this rendition of The Way Out I'm absolutely thrilled to bring you what turned out to be a conversation that was at once extremely resonant and outright entertaining with Amanda White. Amanda is a licensed therapist, author of the new book Not Drinking Tonight – A Guide to Creating a Sober Life You Love, and person in long term recovery since 2015. Perhaps one of the most enlightening aspects of Amanda's recovery is the immutable truth that our last bottom doesn't have to be our lowest or worst bottom, that we don't have to hit a proverbial rock bottom, and then ultimately our bottom is when we stop digging. Equally as instructive is the undeniable value of adding therapy to our program of recovery, especially if we have experienced trauma, adverse childhood experiences, or have a mental health issue. Finally, as you'll soon hear, much of the work Amanda does professionally and writes about in her new book is centered on the truth that we are not stuck with our default thought and behavior reaction patterns for eternity, that indeed we can change and choose to mindfully respond instead of reacting to our counterproductive auto-thoughts. Often referred to as emotional sobriety in 12-Step recovery and an aspect of recovery we work hard to highlight and demystify, this next level recovery allows us to recognize these counterproductive auto-thoughts, pause, and then make a choice to act in a way that's consistent with the people we truly want to be – and that my brothers and sisters is more than half the battle and what it looks like to get out of our own way so we can authentically connect to ourselves and then others in a meaningful way. Amanda shares with us her journey to and through recovery to this point with disarming humor, clear insight, and with the unique perspective of a licensed therapist who's herself in recovery so listen up. Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol free life!

There are so many inspiring quit lit memoirs out there but very few from South Africa.  Apart from Melinda Ferguson's "Smacked" and Sam Cowen's "From Whisky to Water" there has been a distinct lack of inspiration coming from the Southern Hemisphere. However that's all changed thanks to my podcast guest Thando Pato who has just published her Quit Lit memoir - "On the Rocks".  When Thando wanted to get sober she struggled to find a book by someone she could relate to.  So she has put this situation right by becoming the first black South African woman to write a QuitLit memoir.  As it says on her book cover:- "Thirty-nine year old Thando is living in complete denial about her drinking. On the surface, her life appears aspirational – she has an enviable job, a cool apartment and a snazzy car. But behind the facade she harbours a dark and shameful secret – she can't control her drinking." In this Episode Like many of us Thando's drinking career got started at University – that combination of being away from home with access to cheap booze and drinking buddies gets to many of us. However she was not at all worried about her drinking as it just felt normal. In fact she displayed a very sensible attitude towards alcohol as she ditched it for a year while she was doing her post grad at Rhodes - she was paying for her own studies and well aware of the heavy drinking reputation at Rhodes. However by 2012 she had got into the habit of drinking a bottle of wine at home most evenings of the week Still not particularly concerned but when her therapist told her she was an alcoholic she stormed out of the room and promptly sacked her – Thando was still in denial about having a problem but the therapist had definitely planted a seed! Thando's drinking accelerated in 2016 when she had two personal setbacks. Using alcohol to deal with disappointments can easily become our default and it's actually a big sign of progress when we can deal with our lows (and even our highs) without reaching for the booze. Thando described 2016 as a bit of a blur – often having to leave her car and collect it the next morning, not remembering the journey home, awful hangovers, feeling a lot of shame etc.. I think many of us can identify with that blurry stage – that's when you really need to make a change and step off the slippery slope of dependence Of course Thando was making (and breaking) rules by this time but finally accepting that she had a toxic relationship with alcohol but like many of us she had no idea HOW to make a change. Like me she trotted down to AA but like me she listened to the shares and decided that she wasn't “that bad” and that she didn't fit in at all! Now that I look back on the AA experience and that feeling of being "ok" because we are not drinking in the morning etc it occurs to me that we should be comparing ourselves with the best version of ourselves that we could be – rather than comparing ourselves with the hard core “alcoholic” Thando made a pact with her brother to not drink for a year and he would be a support Thando's decision to take a year off was a brave one but it had a fatal flaw – she was under the impression that this sabbatical from the booze would mean that she would be able to reset her habits and drink “normally” This was futile because once our drinking has crossed that line into dependence we can never go back – we have to go forward and create an alcohol free life – a life we don't want to escape from Tribe sober can help you do that – so why not join our tribe. Thando's therapist pointed out that the fact that she was taking a year off indicated that she did have a problem with alcohol as it would never occur to a “normal” drinker to do that! She was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and told that she displayed the traits of a functioning alcoholic What helped Thando finally accept that she was a functioning alcoholic was the explanation she got from her therapist of alcoholism being a spectrum – two extremes with many degrees of dependence in between At one end is the stereotype alcoholic (that homeless man in the park) and at the other end is the non drinker – most of the population fall between those two extremes Back in 2012 Doctors Nowinsky and Doyle published a book called “Almost Alcoholics” – these people are still holding it all together but edging up to the alcoholic end of the spectrum The trick is to keep an eye on your relationship with alcohol and your location on the spectrum.   If you'd like one of our free pdfs called “Signs you have a drinking problem” then email me at janet@tribesober.com Once Thando had got through her sober year (mostly by white knuckling it) life threw her a couple of curved ball which meant that her intentions to moderate were completely derailed She was diagnosed with breast cancer and as drinking was her default mechanism for dealing with trauma she drank more than ever to cope with the stress, the surgery and the various treatments Then came the pandemic but this turned out to be her saving grace.. South Africa implemented an alcohol ban and Thando was able to isolate herself and build up some sober time Although she felt like she was “losing her mind” during those first few months of sobriety she hung in there and it got easier At month 9 she started to write her book and after a year she stopped obsessing about alcohol, she stopped romanticising it She changed the way she saw alcohol, her mindset – that's such an essential step and we'll never thrive in our alcohol free lives if we don't change our mindset So Thando got sober by a combination of being locked away due to the pandemic and getting some therapy Her therapist helped her to understand that she was actually an introvert and needed time alone to recharge – extraverts draw their energy from being with people whereas introverts need time alone Another conclusion she reached through therapy was the fact that she was attracted to men who were emotionally unavailable – her therapist helped her to realise that by drinking she was emotionally cut off from herself.. These days Thando feels that she understands herself so much better and has adjusted her lifestyle to ensure that she gets plenty of time alone Her social life has evolved accordingly and she spends time in smaller groups rather than going for long boozy lunches with big groups of people Apart from getting to know herself better Thandos main benefit of sobriety is more capacity – for herself and for her to connect with others – her relationships are deeper. So many young professionals will identify with Thando's story - her book “On the Rocks” is available in bookstores on Kindle and can be ordered online via Amazon and Loot.   More Info Subscription membership – you can join up HERE. No one in Suzanne's life told her she should stop drinking or that she had a problem with alcohol.  But why could she not stop herself from drinking two glasses of wine each night (and not to mention more on the weekends)?  Suzanne decided she should probably go to AA, because, at the time, where else did you go if you thought you had a problem with alcohol?  Once there, though, she realized it was not a good fit.  So, was she an alcoholic, or was she not?  She didn't fit into the AA scene, but she wasn't comfortable with her drinking habits.  It wasn't until Suzanne started reading Quit Lit and listening to sober podcasts that she realized... Einfach so – einfach nüchtern. In this edition of The Way Out we have recovery podcaster, and person in long term recovery Shane Ramer of That Sober Guy Podcast. I recently had the honor and privilege to share my story on Shane's podcast and I couldn't be more grateful to have had the opportunity to welcome Shane to The Way Out Podcast family to share his remarkable story and the spiritual and recovery truth embodied in it, with us. I'm more convinced than ever that people we don't yet know aren't strangers but friends we haven't met yet, especially in the Recovery community. Indeed, Shane and I share much in common in and out of the realm of Recovery, so much so we're very much like brothers from another mother! Shane and I do our level best to Recover Out Loud as we talk music, coming of age in the 90's, our mutual love of walking with our Recovery dogs, the journey to recovery and the serendipity of recording this installment of The Way Out Podcast on the precise date of Shane's 8 year sobriety anniversary so Listen Up. Was bedeutet "Rauschlos Glücklich" sein? Was waren unsere Erkenntnisse und was war rückblickend ziemlich hart zu schreiben und im Nachhinein zu lesen?Wir freuen uns auf alle Fälle, wenn Ihr das Buch lest und wenn es Euch gefällt. Und über Feedback freuen wir uns auch! Verlosung folgt auch noch, mir fällt nur soeben keine mega gute Frage für ein Gewinnspiel ein. Kommt aber noch!Hört rein! Lest rein! & Spread the message!

If you've read any Quit Lit, Catherine Gray's book, The Unexpected Joy Of Being Sober, is likely on your bookshelf or Kindle. It's one of the first books about giving up alcohol I recommend to women as they're starting their journey to stop drinking.   So I'm incredibly excited because my guest today is the author of The Unexpected Joy Of Being Sober, Catherine Gray. I met Catherine online in a secret non-drinking Facebook group 8 years ago, when she was first starting her life without alcohol and she has been an inspiration to me ever since.   We're here to talk about all things drinking, and quitting drinking, the joy you can find in life without alcohol and her new book, Sunshine Warm Sober: Unexpected Sober Joy That Lasts.   Staying sober is about so much more than putting down the alcohol. It's about recovering and reclaiming your best possible self.     You don't have to spend all day sleeping off your hangover, you can leap out of bed at seven and go on an early morning walk, or join your friends for a lovely brunch. Catherine Gray is a Sunday Times bestselling author of five books and an award-winning writer and editor. Catherine's hit debut, The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober, was a Sunday Times top 10 bestseller. Since then she has published The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober Journal and the critically acclaimed Unexpected Joy of Being Single and The Unexpected Joy of The Ordinary. There's a whole genre of books that you might not ever hear about if you're not a woman who has a complicated relationship with alcohol. It's called “Quit lit"- books about drinking, quitting drinking, getting sober and life without alcohol.    There are novels and memoirs, essays, fiction, and how to guides. They are deep and soulful, entertaining and honest, eye opening, hysterically funny, raw and hopeful. Quit lit books were a lifeline to me in early sobriety.    In this episode, I want to share not only my favorites but the voices of other women and the books that have inspired them and helped them along the path of re-evaluating their relationship with alcohol.    If you're constantly surrounded by messages that drinking is important and glamorous, sophisticated and fun, these books will be a lifeline.   They'll give you a glimpse into what your life could look like without alcohol.    These voices, of women who have been where you are, will remind you that you're not alone.    They'll whisper to you when you are worried about your drinking. They won't let you bury your head in the sand and tell yourself that how you're feeling was no big deal.    They'll give you hope that life will be better without alcohol.    This episode is about the best quit lit for women. To get the full guide of the best quit lit for women go to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/quit-lit Enter your email address and the guide will be sent right to your inbox.   Shownotes: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/19 Grab your  Free Sober Girls Guide To Quitting Drinking   Books and Resources mentioned in this episode Drinking a Love Story by Caroline Knapp Carry On, Warrior: The Power of Embracing Your Messy, Beautiful Life by Glennon Doyle Tired of Thinking About Drinking: Take My 100-Day Sober Challenge by Belle Robertson The Sober Diaries: How One Woman Stopped Drinking and Started Living by Clare Pooley We are the Luckiest: The Surprising Magic of Sober Life by Laura McKowen The Naked Mind: Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness & Change Your Life by Annie Grace The Sober Lush: A Hedonist's Guide to Living a Decadent, Adventurous, Soulful Life--Alcohol Free by Jardine Libaire + Amanda Eyre Ward Blackout by Sarah Hepola Quit Like A Woman by Holly Whitaker Girl Walks Out of A Bar by Lisa Smith The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray Mrs. D is Going Without by Lotta Dann Sober Stick Figures by Amber Tozer Nothing Good Can Come of This by Kristi Coulter Idiot by Laura Clery Drink by Ann Dowsett Johnston The Little Book of Big Change by Amy Johnson My Fair Junkie by Amy Dresner This is How by Augusten Burroughs High Achiever by Tiffany Jenkins The Ember Ever There and The Unpickled Holiday Survival by Jean McCarthy Almost Alcoholic by Joseph Nowinski Ph.D The Road Less Traveled by M. Hi and welcome to THE PUBLIC SPHERE from Contrivers' Review. I'm Luke Mergner joined by Pete Sinnott at our "studio" — in air quotes — in Glendale, CA. Two weeks ago we discussed the collective autobiography, Quit Lit, documenting the mass exodus of non-tenured faculty from Higher Education to a depressed and depressing job market. Today, we're talking about Ron Srigley's "Whose University is it anyway?" — a diatribe about the balance of power between administrators and professors in the modern university. As educators at every level face funding crunches, how does the growing administrative bloat in higher education serve the students?
