Exploring Alternative Paths to Addiction Recovery: Beyond 12-Step Programs

In this episode of The Codependent Doctor, I, Dr. Angela Downey, delve into the world of alternative addiction recovery programs, moving beyond the traditional 12-step approach that many are familiar with. Having previously explored the nature of addiction and the effectiveness of 12-step programs in our last two episodes, I recognize that recovery is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Today, I aim to highlight various paths to healing that cater to different needs and preferences.I begin by celebrating the courage of those who are willing to explore recovery options, whether they are newcomers or have previously tried other programs. I share my personal connection to the topic, drawing from my experiences in Codependence Anonymous and the journey of a close family member, whom I refer to as Jane. Jane's exploration of various recovery programs, including SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery, and Dharma Recovery, has provided me with valuable insights into the diverse approaches available for those struggling with addiction. The episode features an in-depth look at SMART Recovery, which stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. This program is designed for individuals seeking a practical, science-based approach to recovery that does not rely on spiritual or religious frameworks. I discuss the four key areas that SMART Recovery focuses on: building and maintaining motivation, coping with urges and cravings, managing thoughts and behaviors, and living a balanced, fulfilling life. Each area is explored with practical strategies and examples, emphasizing the program's empowering nature.Next, I introduce Refuge Recovery, a mindfulness-based program that adopts a Buddhist approach to healing from addiction. I explain how this program encourages self-awareness, meditation, and personal responsibility, helping individuals confront their emotions rather than escape them. I also touch on Dharma Recovery, which shares similarities with Refuge Recovery but offers a more self-guided and flexible structure.Throughout the episode, I emphasize the importance of finding the right recovery approach for each individual, as everyone's journey is unique. I briefly mention other recovery options, including therapy, Life Ring Secular Recovery, Women for Sobriety, Celebrate Recovery, Recovery Dharma, Medication-Assisted Treatment Models, and harm reduction programs. Each of these alternatives provides different strategies and support systems for those seeking to overcome addiction. As I conclude the episode, I remind listeners that recovSend us a textIf you're interested in a list of books that I recommend to help you on your journey you can request it by clicking on the link in my show notes.

Episode 508 – Your Job is to Have Fun   Today we have Fanny. She is 39 years old and lives in Wilmington, NC. She took her last drink on February 3rd, 2021.   Recovery Elevator is going back to Peru in October 2025. On this 10-night, 11-day trip of a lifetime, we will be hiking the Inca Trail and participating in two service projects. Registration opens January 13th and closes May 30th in order to secure tickets to the Inca Trail.   Sponsors for this episode:   Better Help  - code ELEVATOR for 10% off of your first month   Sober Link - $50 off of device using this link   [01:43] Intro:   Better Rhodes recently sent Paul a couple of drinks to sample, and he shares that they were all fantastic. Gone are the days when O'Doul's was the only alcohol-free option around.  Paul says his favorite was Hiyo.   Better Rhodes – code RECOVERYELEVATOR15   [04:05] More thoughts from Paul:   Paul shares an article called Benefits of Play for Adults that shares the importance of being playful as adults. Remember that as a child, you were naturally playful without alcohol. Somewhere along the way we forget how to be playful and then we link alcohol with having fun.   This is great news for healing. Just like some of us have goals to hit a certain amount of steps in our day, you should aim to have at least a certain amount of laughs. Laughter is the best medicine and some of the side effects may be a boost to your immune system, release of endorphins, reduction of stress and anxiety and improvement of mood.   Your job, listeners, is to have fun. The healing pathway will contain challenges, but overall, it cannot be more stressful or boring than when you were drinking. You need to have fun and please don't take yourself too seriously at any moment on this journey.   [09:48] Paul introduces Fanny:   Fanny has lived in NC most of her life and recently proposed to her fiancé who she plans to marry in March. For her profession, she says it's all things food. Recipe developer, food writer and content creator. For fun, Fanny enjoys outside activities such as biking, hiking and walking her dogs.   During high school and college, Fanny says she drank like any other college kid and always enjoyed a party. Over time, Fanny found herself using alcohol to push down negativity and some lingering questions about her sexuality.   When Fanny moved to California for a while, she said drinking was fun again. She says she learned a lot about herself there including that she didn't want to be an actress, her real passion was food, and she found herself wanting to return to North Carolina.   After moving back, Fanny met someone, and they eventually married. Drinking was a big part of their lifestyle. They moved to Illinois for his job right before the pandemic and found themselves isolated without family and friends. Fanny says the drinking ramped up and there were some incidents that gave her a lot of guilt and shame. They eventually divorced and Fanny moved back to NC.   Fanny started a relationship with a friend from college who expressed their concerns over drinking because their ex had an issue. Fanny assured her that she was not like she was in college. After a two-day bender, it was Fanny's girlfriend that helped her call her parents and get some help. Fanny was able to find a rehab in Western NC with the help of her therapist.   Fanny says the first few days were tough, but eventually she settled in and became a sponge trying to learn everything about the addiction. Through her rehab she was exposed to several different recovery modalities and found she enjoys Recovery Dharma the most. She really identifies and enjoys the Buddhist perspective on recovery.   Recovery Elevator We took the elevator down; we got to take the stairs back up. How does someone heal an addictive mind? Matthew Hahn is a co-founder of Recovery Dharma, which uses Buddhist methods to overcome addictions. He also contributes to the Boundless Freedom Project, teaching mindfulness, ethics and compassion to people in prison and on their return to the outside world. Our conversation explores how Buddhist principles and practices empower those in recovery to find inner wisdom. We consider how this differs from “12 step” approaches, which enlist the help of God, while noting the importance of community to both. Another part of Matthew's work is to advocate for changes in carceral policy that make transformation more widely accessible. These commitments grew out of his experiences, both as an addict and convicted felon. Matthew has been sober since 2005, but his earlier escapades earned him ten years in prison. That story is worth a whole podcast in itself (see this episode of How to Human for a fuller exploration). Put simply, his life turned around after stealing a safe, and his response to what he found inside reduced his sentence.Matthew describes his own recovery in this essay, included in the second edition of Recovery Dharma, which is available for free download here. He posts on Instagram, TikTok and X / Twitter with the handle @hahnscratch.
