James has concerns about the mentality and behavior of the Jewish Christians of the Diaspora. Join us as we consider his critique and the way forward he provided in James 4:1-10. The Letter of James | James 4:1-10 Where do the conflicts and where do the quarrels among you come from? Is it not from this, from your passions that battle inside you? You desire and you do not have; you murder and envy and you cannot obtain; you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask; you ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly, so you can spend it on your passions. Adulterers, do you not know that friendship with the world means hostility toward God? So whoever decides to be the world's friend makes himself God's enemy. Or do you think the scripture means nothing when it says, “The spirit that God caused to live within us has an envious yearning”? But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.” So submit to God. But resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter into mourning and your joy into despair. Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.

We start with an email we received from a Catholic in Quebec and a new litner from France that we met on our recent Church history tour. In this episode we discuss the following quote from Joseph Smith "If a man commit adultery, he cannot receive the celestial kingdom of God. We revisit some strong language James used for his readers when he calls them, "Adulterers" and he tells them if they continue to be a friend with the world, then they are enemies of God. They, as well as we, cannot have it both ways. We are called to be holy, we have been washed in the blood of Christ, our sins have been forgiven, and we are filled with the Holy Spirit. Why then do we continue to live in sin? James says we are committing adultery and we need turn from our sin, draw near to God, He will draw near to us; that we should let our laughter turn to sadness, that we should have tears because of our sin, and our joy turn to gloom. The problem is, we are like Israel in Jeremiah 2! They couldn't admit they were in sin and their hearts had become callused! God even tells Israel they are worse than a prostitute and that they can teach a prostitute lessons. We have to realize who we are in Christ and live like it!

Most of us contain multitudes – human beings are complicated and often confusing.Once when asked to “just be yourself,” Bob Dylan responded with: “no problem, but which self do you want me to be?” Many of us can relate to this because we can be one way in one situation but completely different in another. We're all a complicated mix.Our temptation however, when it comes to other people, is to simplify them or label them with a word or a phrase; often that word or phrase is drawn from a person's worst moment. We see the complexity in our selves, but we deny it in others when we label them.Murderer.Adulterer.King David was both yet somehow, he was also called a man after God's own heart. Not only that, but David is also often identified with the messianic identity that Jesus came to embody. Now, consider this question for a moment, “Have you ever fought against God?” Most of us would say no because we are still alive, right? However, we are, in our humanity, predisposed to rebel against God. The sinful nature within us wants to rule. Saul was no different, and he would later admit that he went too far in his religious zeal. Many Christians fled Jerusalem when persecution began after Stephen's death, seeking refuge in other cities and countries. Saul was tracking them down without apology or remorse for the families he was destroying. Even traveling 150 miles to Damascus in Syria to bring Christians back in chains to Jerusalem. Paul (formerly Saul) later wrote to the Church in Rome, “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” (Romans 8:7) That sounds harsh, but it is true. To believers dispersed around the known world because of persecution, James says, “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever, therefore, wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4) This one makes sense.Saul radically made himself an enemy of God by attacking the faithful followers of Jesus. So, as he neared the ancient city in Syria, he discovered God would not have it anymore and that He had other plans for Saul. The resurrected LORD confronts him, radically interrupts his plan, and interjects His own. Are we fighting against God in some way?
