After being booed off stage when telling jokes at a school talent show, Alexis started his first business aged 12 — four years earlier than Branson! However, Alexis then failed to grow any of his six(!) businesses all the way through school and University. His most successful business closed after a visit from the police. His early failures lead to him fear hiring people and so he nearly gave up completely. Even his wife and mother were telling him to wake up and let go of the dream. Fast forward 10 years, Alexis is now an award-winning entrepreneur, with two software businesses and a consulting practice, serving over 600 organizations around the world, including well known brands such as Sony, 3M, Swarovski, Fitness First, and Pepsi. Alexis is passionate about freeing up time for business leaders so they can spend it on what matters most. Through his work as Founder of AirManual, Alexis has saved 1,000s of hours of time for business owners and their leaders each year, enabling them to unlock business' growth, and scale with less stress. In his own businesses, he has removed himself from day-to-day operations, allowing him to go on a 6-week road trip across Europe whilst his businesses continued to operate and grow.

In this episode of the Data Malarkey podcast, data storyteller Sam Knowles is joined by serial entrepreneur, business simplifier, and podcaster, Alexis Kingsbury. Alexis is the co-founder of AirManual, a company that helps businesses document their processes, onboarding, and training so that employees can take on new responsibilities and deliver high quality work more quickly and efficiently. Indeed, on Alexis' LinkedIn profile, he says that he saves “thousands of hours of time for business leaders each year, reducing stress, and unlocking business growth”. He's been business savvy since before he became a teenager, and founded his first business while studying Management Science at university. From the ‘using data smarter' mindset, making better – business-focused – use of data is precisely what Alexis does to empower all sorts of organisations to grow faster, with less pain, while at the same time avoiding the common mistakes everyone seems to make. Our conversation was recorded remotely, via the medium of Riverside.fm, on 9 August 2023. Thanks to Joe Hickey for production support. Podcast artwork by Shatter Media. Voice over by Samantha Boffin. As a pioneer of working out what works in business processes – and then using validated, road-tested checklists to accelerate, simplify, and automate them – Alexis tells us that he is now able to spend most of his time working on the business and less and less actually in the business. And, in a classic case of no “cobblers' children's shoes”, he's applied this approach to his own companies. Business leaders – particularly founder-entrepreneurs – who he works with often find themselves stuck working in rather than on the business, over-relied-upon, and stressed out. But even a simple intervention with AirManual can save a leader 15 hours a week. This removes bottlenecks to growth and at the same time drives down stress, in this way enabling leaders to lead – AND secure – a more meaningful life/work balance. Alexis is a big champion of taking time out – real time out, not just working next to a pool for two weeks – and offers all his globally-distributed team 40 (yes, forty) days holiday per year. He also puts measures in place to ensure that his team don't under-take their holiday allocation – and fortunately means not nearly as draconian as Sam suggests (fining them a day's pay for every day's holiday not taken!). To make a business run more efficiently, Alexis advises identifying the data that matter, summarising these in a regularly-updated dashboard, and the whole team discussing them at regular, at-least weekly meetings. This includes taking a weekly pulse of employee happiness. He also has a daily, ten-minute huddle for his global team. “Just because we are remote, it doesn't have to feel like that,” he observes. Alexis is excited and terrified by AI in equal measure, but more importantly his businesses have started to use it – for instance ChatGPT – and his team is guiding clients through smart use of AI to accelerate laborious, repetitive processes. Alexis Kingsbury is the Founder of AirManual, where he has saved 1,000s of hours of time for business owners and their leaders, enabling them to unlock business growth and scale with less stress. As an award-winning speaker and serial entrepreneur, he has two software businesses and a consulting practice, where he serves over 600 organizations around the world, including well-known brands such as Sony, 3M, Swarovski, Fitness First, and Pepsi. In this episode: When delegating tasks, many business owners notice their team is not following established processes and making costly mistakes. This often occurs when entrepreneurs document processes in a confusing manner. Find out how you can escape from the day-to-day and build your ideal business. Systems maven Alexis Kingsbury has observed that when removing themselves from their businesses, most entrepreneurs aren't sure where to start and document every minute process. Instead, he recommends documenting operations that align with your goals yet consume most of your time. After identifying these key tasks, prioritize, document, and test the most prevalent ones. These should be documented using comprehensive checklists and include video instructions for additional clarification. In today's Systems Simplified episode, join Adi Klevit as she hosts Alexis Kingsbury, the Founder of AirManual, to discuss documenting and scaling processes to gain freedom. Alexis explains the benefits and barriers of task delegation, how to clarify your processes and procedures, and his entrepreneurial endeavors at a young age.
You've got to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. That was a top tip and a bit of a theme in my podcast interview with M.C. Laubscher... As an investor, business owner, and host of the Cashflow Ninja podcast, M.C. shared so many stories of businesses who had thrived using ideas and approaches that they put in place when they were hit by a crisis. And for many businesses right now, the current climate is such that crisis after crisis may be the norm. And you have no idea how to dig yourself up from under it all. And so in this episode of De-stress Your Business, we go deep into what you should be doing in the current economy. If you need practical insights or you're looking for simple changes you can make in your business to improve cashflow and help you scale, this episode is for you. --- Helpful resources: - Free Guide: How to give your team the clear guidance, processes and onboarding to remove stress and unlock growth: https://airmanual.link/discover - Arrange a Discovery call with an AirManual consultant: https://airmanual.link/discovery Want to learn more? Most business owners struggle with one thing that seems easy on the surface… How do you get your team to FOLLOW THE PROCESS? For example, Darren is the owner of multiple dog hotels. One day, he told me he was frustrated that his team would not consistently follow the processes in his business. As a result, mistakes were frequent (risking the health of the dogs), team members were inefficient (increasing costs) and he was required to be on hand EVERY DAY to deal with issues. He wanted to know… What should he do? Should he give up trying to get people to follow the process? Are the people the problem? Does he need to fire people? Is his business unusual? Why won't people just do things right? In this episode of De-stress Your Business, I'm going deep into the advice I gave him, the changes Darren made, and what happened as a result. --- Helpful resources: Free Guide: How to give your team the clear guidance, processes and onboarding to remove stress and unlock growth: https://airmanual.link/discover Arrange a Discovery call with an AirManual consultant: https://airmanual.link/discovery --- Want to learn more? Alexis Kingsbury is co-founder at AirManual and SpiderGap. He is also a speaker on topics such as freeing up time and the business applications and limitations of AI. Alexis's entrepreneurial journey started before he was even a teenager, and in later years it was the honest if brutal advice from a manager that inspired his path to understanding how businesses need to be run, and how best to use processes to solve people challenges and save time.
Many business leaders are currently wondering whether artificial intelligence has got real business applications and many others have tried some AI, but not really seeing their teams start using it day to day. This may lead us to question: Is this just a fad? Is AI going to really add value? Are we missing the big opportunities? How are experts using AI in their businesses? So I wanted to share some of the practical ways in which AI is already being used by businesses to solve real business problems. In this episode of De-stress Your Business, I'm absolutely thrilled to be having a chat with Alfred Goldberg, the founder and president of Absolute Marketing Solutions. Alfred and his team have been at the forefront of digital marketing and technology for about two decades, implementing variety of tools and more recently AI solutions in creative and innovative ways to drive business growth, both for Him and his clients. He is personally using AI tools daily in his business in loads of different ways. So I reached out to explore some of the practical benefits that he's getting, what the experience has been with his team, and what advice he has for other business leaders. How well documented are your finance processes? In many companies, the answer is not particularly well and there is far too much reliance on knowledge in the heads of key members of the team. This leads to all sorts of problems when it comes to improving the process or bringing in new team members. Kevin Appleby chats to Alexis Kingsbury, co-founder of AirManual. Alexis founded AirManual to solve exactly this sort of problem and it forms a simple cloud-based solution that can be implemented quickly and simply. Documenting your finance processes is important for several reasons: Streamlining Operations: By documenting your finance processes, you can identify inefficiencies and areas for improvement. This allows you to streamline your operations, improve productivity, and reduce the amount of time and resources spent on finance-related tasks. Compliance: Well-documented financial processes can help you stay compliant with applicable laws, regulations, and financial reporting requirements. This can help you avoid penalties, fines, and legal issues down the line. Better Decision Making: With clear documentation of your finance processes, you can make informed decisions based on accurate and up-to-date financial information. This improves your ability to forecast future revenue, manage expenses, and make strategic business decisions. Training and Knowledge Transfer: Documenting your finance processes ensures that your team members are appropriately trained and knowledgeable about how your financial system operates. This reduces the risk of errors, omissions, and misunderstandings, and helps ensure consistency and accuracy in financial reporting. Overall, documenting your finance processes is essential for ensuring the financial health and long-term success of your business. https://youtu.be/G72x8AAQ2YY Links Alexis Kingsbury on LinkedIn Kevin Appleby on LinkedIn GrowCFO 2023 Predictions Find out more about Airmanual Timestamps 00:11 Introducing Alexis Kingsbury. 02:35 The importance of learning from your mistakes. 08:24 Firing yourself from tasks is a healthy attitude. 14:08 What would you do if you were working with a client to improve a process? 18:21 How do you make it possible to zoom out and see at a high level? 23:18 How to use checklists in your business to automate your processes. 28:58 The three big process systems issues in finance right now. 34:20 The cost of errors and how it affects cash flow. 38:29 What are the rules around creating realistic expectations? 42:48 The power of a well-documented process. 47:42 Why you need a purpose-built system.

In this podcast episode, Alexis Kingsbury, an experienced management consultant, shares his passionate journey to empower business owners with his unique process to help them break free from an overwhelming workload, reclaim their time, and achieve success without sacrificing their work-life balance. You will learn the essential steps to quickly document business processes for maximum growth and scale. "Scaling beyond those 42 hours becomes nearly impossible because you're already at full capacity. I imagine that there was a point at which he was working five days a week and as he added more team members, he gets to the point where he's working 60 hours. There is no more juice to squeeze out of him. He's already giving his all and the risk... and I know this from other business owners. Where they went down that route and didn't solve it and as a result, closed the business or significantly cut it back. One of the biggest challenges that I've seen in businesses is that no matter how small or how large they are, they don't have enough time to finish all of their daily processes. These businesses feel overwhelmed and can't even imagine what the next step would be to resolve all of their organisational issues. One of the reasons for this overwhelm is that they add poor processes to their systems. However, the main reason is that most business owners consider implementing processes as a time stealer and as a means to drain a lot of money due to inefficiencies. Our guest today is Alexis Kingsbury, the co-founder of AirManual, a startup that helps businesses document their processes as well as onboard and train employees. With over 10 years of experience and with a remote and global team, Alexis will explain the power of systemising business procedures and processes for both your time and bottom line.
Alexis is an award-winning entrepreneur, with over 10 years of experience, currently running two SaaS businesses (AirManual and Spidergap) with a remote & global team, and supports others as a board member or consultant including well known companies like Sony PlayStation. In the last few years, Alexis has worked with 100s of business leaders to help save them 1,000s of hours of their time each year and unlock their business' growth. He's been sharing his findings, and it's had a huge impact on many businesses. For example, Alexis won the ‘Most valued content' award in 2021 for his workshop at Dan Bradbury's Success Mastermind (a community of 60+ small business owners), which led to over 30 business owners adopting the tools and processes recommended.Alexis is a husband, and dad of two, and is passionate about balancing work alongside family life (and makes sure his team does too!) Could you remove yourself from your business or life for 6 weeks while you take a road trip with the family? It is about creating s systems for success, it is about being organised and with processes and procedures for what you do so that others could do it for you. My guest on the programme is a systems man, as a child, he was a natural entrepreneur, at 10 he was always making stuff and selling it. But then he came from a family where business and selling were just normal. Alexis Kingsbury was born in Nottinghamshire in the UK. As the clever child, he was seen as the geek, the one with his hand up in class. The point is he was driven to learn and business was his primary interest. The question was how do you make them grow After taking business studies at advanced level and went on to Loughborough University to study management science. He was still looking for the answer to that question, how do you grow a business past yourself It was only after leaving university that he found the answer. He went into management consultancy and got to experience first-hand what the inside of a scaled business looks like. He was terrified on his first day on the job with a new client and he was able to save them 1000s within 10 minutes. What he discovered is that scaling a business is about people and systems. Systems For Success Our conversation is about his ability to break down a process and create systems. He discovered what came to him with ease was difficult for others. Ultimately he left the consultancy to start up a business with a partner. They created Airmanual and Spider gap both software services that support businesses to grow and scale. Over the last 15 years, Alexis has worked with hundreds of business leaders to save them 1,000s of hours of their time each year, help them work more effectively, and unlock their business growth. About He was once told by a manager that he'd never be able to build a team because he'd be a horrible manager. He didn't have the people skills. He believed him, so tried to set up businesses that didn't need people. But it didn't work — they couldn't grow or operate without him. His family and friends encouraged him to give up building businesses and stick with what he was good at — business process consulting. When his first employee quit, he learned during her exit interview that she felt they didn't have a good culture, processes or ways of working. He decided there and then not to let this happen again. Over the course of the next few years, he got smart about how businesses need to be run... The impact? He now has two software businesses with a combined team of 16 super happy people, that do not require him day-to-day in the business — he can focus his time on growth, or take significant time off to be with family. Sadly he knew so many business leaders stuck where he was... It's now his mission to help business leaders to build and use amazing processes and onboarding so that they can delegate effectively, support their team's development, and achieve more with less stress. --- Alexis is currently active in three businesses / roles: 1. Co-founder of AirManual, making it easy to create simple processes and onboarding that others can use, edit and provide feedback on. 2. Co-founder at Spidergap; the employee-friendly 360 degree feedback tool. We work with over 500 organizations (inc 3M, PwC, Pepsi) around the world to help their employees to prioritize and take action on their personal development. 3. Partner in the management consultancy Bridging Insight Ltd, focusing on improving the ways in which teams across organisations work together. Have worked with global FTSE 100 organisations (inc. Sony, AstraZeneca, IMI, ABF) to help them improve working relationships between teams and individuals, and to design and implement the roles, processes and technology to support effective working. In his spare time (when it exists!) he is also host of the Parentpreneur Accelerator podcast and founder of Parentpreneur Ltd; helping parentpreneurs to build successful start-ups whilst having quality time with their families.
On this episode, we are pleased to introduce Alexis Kingsbury who started his entrepreneurial journey at a very young age. Alexis came on the show and shared valuable lessons learned that can help entrepreneurs and business owners. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/askdpros-business-podcast/message
On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Alexis Kingsbury who runs software and consulting businesses that help leaders grow their business and their teams with less stress. He is a long-term entrepreneur and has scaled several businesses and helped them to systemise and grow. KEY TAKEAWAYSMy background was as a management consultant with some medium sized businesses and then I worked with some very large businesses like AstraZeneca, Honda and parts of the UK Government helping them to optimise their processes to achieve more with either the same or less resource, sadly in some cases. When I left the consulting world to set up my own businesses I had to take everything that I learned and completely unlearn it! Because a lot of what you do for large companies doesn't immediately apply to small companies. There's a temptation as an early-stage entrepreneur, to hold onto the concept or the idea that you have too tightly. Entrepreneurship is a really weird balance, you need perseverance and a thick skin when you're getting rejections and friends and family are questioning your crazy idea, but on the flip side you need to be able to listen and change and pivot and iterate. The trick, or the solution, is to get passionate and focus on the pain and the customer. If you're really clear on the people you want to work with and the problems you want to solve for them based on real problems they have, not ones you assume they have, then the solution itself matters a bit less and you can pivot and change that to find what fits and helps them. When you've got that you've got something magical that can then grow and turn into a successful business. We've had to rebrand a few times and it's always incredibly painful to do. SpiderGap is an example of where the product and customer changed significantly and yet, when we reviewed it and spoke to customers, they liked the name and said it did stand out from the usual suspects of HR Solutions and so on. So, we concluded it was fine. You can spend so much time on renaming the business – and there are other businesses where we have changed the name and the branding.Often one of the most common areas for business owners and early stage entrepreneurs to let go of next is around sales. Perhaps they are the only sales person in the business, so when they get busy the sales pipeline slows up, which holds them back. Then they start to think about hiring, but that could hold them back from making sales and both things will impact money coming in. It's a barrier for people to make that first leap. The mistake I and other entrepreneurs make when hiring a sales person is they assume the answer is to bring in a really experienced sales person to come in and solve all their problems. We did that, and that didn't happen. We realised that at their old job they had a sales process, pipeline management, sales collateral and really clear sets of questions and things to cover. Making a mistake like that can cost you a year, but next time round you must implement a sales process. BEST MOMENTS‘At various points in my life I've started up 9 businesses, but it's probably telling that, of those 9, I essentially have 3 still active and one where I've paused. The process of building a business is an iterative one, or at least it should be.'‘As an entrepreneur, you do need to listen and have lots of conversations and that's often one of the hardest things to do is go out there and have those conversations, but it's only through that that you can truly pivot and innovate.'‘One of the most important things when you're looking at branding is messaging: What's your description of the customer, what's your description of the pains and frustrations that your customer has that you're solving for them, and how do you succinctly describe what you do and demonstrate that?'Continuous improvement is so valuable, like tweaks and changes over time add up to huge shifts I the results that you get over years. If you don't document things and continuously improve them, you'll get the same results and never grow.' But he found that the products and services weren't meeting the needs of the market as much as he expected and the company was not able to scale up and grow.Taking what he learned thus far, he created another company called AirManual which helps companies to document processes and procedures to make management more effective and easier. He was determined to figure out a way to have more personal time for his family by having a business that runs more effectively.Alexis then explains how he built a team and the problems he had initially because he didn't have the onboarding processes and procedures in place to help train new employees and make them feel supported. After the onboading process was created, he was able to have great retention for the new hires. Next, we learn about how he was told that he would never be a good manager by someone before he became an entrepreneur, and how he proved them wrong by developing his staff to become great managers themselves. We end the conversation hearing about how the startup business changed since he launched his first company.Do you want to start your own Podcast?
