Get Paid to Practice: The Balance Between Art and Commerce

The Artistic Entrepreneur w/ Jake Isham

Every artist faces the same tension: doing the work that pays the bills vs. doing the work that feeds the soul. In this episode, Jake makes the case that the line between them doesn't have to be a war — and that the smartest artists find a way to get paid to practice. There's a version of this story most artists know too well: working a job that has nothing to do with their craft, saving up, burning out, and wondering if the dream is even possible. Jake has a different model — and in this episode of Move Faster, he breaks it down. The concept is simple: get paid to practice. Find work close enough to your craft that every day on the job is also a day of reps. Jake runs a video production agency that funds his real passion — narrative filmmaking. That agency paid for the gear, the skills, and the bandwidth that let him make 14 short films in four months with his wife. It's not a compromise. It's a strategy. He runs through three real examples: a musician who does audio engineering by day and uses the income to self-fund his own releases and Spotify advertising; a photographer who shoots weddings to bankroll his landscape photography and print sales; and an actor friend spending a small fortune on a short film he could have made scrappier — because he never built the infrastructure that comes from working in the field. Then there's Kurtis Brewer, who kept grinding on his horror projects on the side until one of them grossed over $200 million. The point isn't to stay in the day job forever. The point is to use it until the art pays for itself — and to not waste the off-hours on another Netflix binge when that time could be closing the gap.In this episode:The "get paid to practice" principle Jake learned from a mentor early in his careerHow Jake made 14 short films in 4 months — and what made it possibleThree real artist archetypes funding their craft intelligentlyWhy the side hustle is temporary — and what you're actually building towardThe honest question every artist needs to ask about how they spend their off-hours

What Is The Life You Actually Want? The Question Every Artist Avoids

The Artistic Entrepreneur w/ Jake Isham

Most artists plan their career first and figure out their life later. Jake flips it — and makes the case that the life you want should come first, and everything else gets built around that. Before you can build the career, you have to decide on the life. That's the whole premise of this episode — and it's the question most artists never stop to ask.In this episode of Move Faster, Jake breaks down why reverse engineering your career from your ideal lifestyle isn't a soft concept — it's a strategic one. Do you want money? Freedom? Critical acclaim? To work on your own terms? All valid. But each answer comes with a completely different set of trade-offs, and most people don't realize that until they're already deep in a path that doesn't fit.He shares three real examples: a painter friend building toward museum recognition with zero interest in commercializing, a photographer still figuring out whether the art even needs to pay the bills, and a mentor who built a construction company specifically to fund his art on his own terms — no galleries, no compromises. Then there's Eva Longoria headhunting out of her trailer on the Desperate Housewives lot just to survive while the acting career caught up.The throughline: there's no one right way. But there are trade-offs in every direction — and the artists who move with clarity are the ones who've actually sat down and confronted what they want.In this episode:Why the lifestyle question has to come before the career questionThree real artist archetypes and the different paths they've chosenThe "fund your art with a business" model — and why it worksWhat Eva Longoria's hustle years reveal about building a creative careerHow to figure out what sacrifices you're actually willing to make

Stop trying to be original as an artist

Originality is overrated — at least at first. In this episode, Jake breaks down the lesson that changed how he thinks about both his art and his business: everything has a structure, and the fastest path to creative success is learning it, duplicating it, and then making it yours. It sounds like creative heresy. But Jake's latest revelation might be the most practical thing he's ever said on this podcast: stop trying to be original before you understand the structure. In this episode of Move Faster, Jake shares a conversation with a fellow filmmaker that clicked something into place — every art form, every medium, every platform has a set of rules. Sitcoms have a structure. Movies have a structure. YouTube has a structure. Paintings, photography, podcasts — all of it. And the people who win aren't necessarily the most clever. They're the ones who understand the structure and execute it so cleanly you don't even notice it's there. For someone who's always wanted to do something different, this has been the hardest lesson to sit with. But Jake makes the case that your originality isn't at risk — because whatever you create is going to be uniquely you anyway. The structure is just the container. It's also what separates you from AI, which can replicate structure but can't bring true originality to it.The same principle applies to business: find who's built the career you want, reverse-engineer what they did, and follow the formula. The complications are what slow you down. The simplicities are where you actually grow.In this episode:Why the most successful artists execute structure — not originalityHow sitcoms, movies, YouTube, and photography all follow the same underlying logicThe hardest creative lesson Jake has had to learn (and keep relearning)Why AI proves the point: structure without humanity is just regurgitationHow the same rule applies to building a career and a business

The Power of Silence: Why Artists Need to Stop Announcing and Start Doing

You get excited. You tell people. They have opinions. Now you're off course. In this episode, Jake makes the case for keeping your mouth shut — until the work speaks for itself.Everyone has an opinion about what you should be doing. Your friends, your family, your mentors — even people five steps ahead of you. The moment you open your mouth about a plan, you're inviting all of it in. And sometimes the noise isn't worth it.In this episode of Move Faster, Jake gets into the power of silence — not as a communication strategy, but as a creative survival skill. He shares what happened when he casually mentioned he was starting a weight loss journey to two friends in the fitness space. He didn't ask for advice. He knew what he was doing. He'd lost 30–40 pounds multiple times. Didn't matter — the unsolicited opinions came anyway, and suddenly he was on the defensive about his own plan. The lesson isn't to go dark on everyone. It's to be strategic about when you share, who you share with, and what you're actually asking for when you do. Jake breaks down three ways to handle it — stay quiet until the work is done, brace for the feedback and hold your ground, or set the terms upfront by telling people what you need from the conversation. He also talks about what it takes to actually trust yourself as an artist — which is harder than any of this — and why silence is one of the few tools that protects your instincts long enough to act on them.In this episode:Why announcing your plans can quietly derail themThe three ways to handle the opinions you didn't ask forHow Jake and his wife set communication terms before every hard conversationWhy artists have to protect their instincts — and how silence helps do thatThe journal trick and other ways to "say it" without opening the door

This week on Swimming with Allocators, Erik Balck Sørensen joins Earnest and Alexa to share his journey from serial founder in an almost non-existent Danish startup scene to CIO of Denmark's Export and Investment Fund, a sovereign platform backing innovation at scale. Erik explains how Denmark went from having no venture funds or ecosystem infrastructure to becoming a global player in biotech, green tech, and deep tech, and why “giving back” and tight founder communities were crucial to that evolution. He breaks down what it really means to run a sovereign wealth fund with a dual mandate, balancing financial returns for taxpayers with societal impact, and how political momentum, past missteps, and investment discipline shape their strategy. Erik also details Denmark's 2030 plan: moving faster, professionalizing as an LP and direct investor, and doubling or tripling down on stronghold verticals like life sciences, selected green technologies, quantum computing, and European growth-stage capital. Additionally, Chuck Daly explains how evolving market dynamics, LP demands, and longer-dated, more complex venture products are reshaping the regulatory landscape for VC managers, driving greater scrutiny on valuation, fund structures, and exemptions, and highlighting the value of Sidley's deep, shared institutional expertise for GPs navigating this shift. Highlights from this week's conversation include: Erik's Journey From Founder to Sovereign Wealth CIO (0:13) Community Building and Giving Back Culture (5:26)   Corporates, Biotech, Green Tech, and Deep Tech (8:17)   What Denmark's Export and Investment Fund Is (9:39)   Balancing Political Momentum, Purpose, and Profit (12:52)   Small Country Strategy and Global Fund Partnerships (15:51)   2030 Strategy to Move Faster and Smarter (19:42)   Priority Verticals: Biotech, Quantum, Green Tech, Growth (32:08)   Misconceptions About the Fund and New Operating Style (36:58)   Infrastructure Bets: AI Supercomputer and Quantum Facility (40:48)   Technological Sovereignty and Europe's Tech Dependence (44:14)   Defense Technology Catch-Up with US Partners (48:47)   Optimism From Founders and How to Contact Erik (51:01)   Denmark´s Export and Investment Fund is a new, state-owned fund which proves a single point of contact to all Danish companies in need of state financed risk capital. Nobody hands you a list of your core values. You have to go find them. In this episode of Move Faster, Jake shares the four core values he lives and works by — not because they looked good on a wall, but because he had to think for the first time about what actually mattered to him.He starts with competence — the one his parents drilled into him from day one — and breaks down the three-step framework he pulled from The Way to Happiness: look, learn, practice. No shortcuts. No skipping steps. Just doing the work. Then he makes the case for having fun, which sounds obvious until you watch people stress themselves into misery over things that, in his words, don't require a 911 call. From his wife's TikTok content to his brother's wedding, Jake keeps coming back to the same question: can we make this a game? From there: communication. Always more, never less. And delivered with the right tone — because how you say it matters just as much as saying it at all.And finally, the one that took the longest to learn — lead with respect and admiration. Not liking. Not agreeing. Just respect. He calls it the ultimate superpower, especially with people who've wronged you.In this episode:The 3-step framework for becoming genuinely competent at your craftWhy "have fun" is actually a serious value, not a throwaway lineHow communication creates problems — and why the only fix is more communicationThe difference between liking someone and respecting them (and why it changes everything)Why you need to know your values before you can hold anyone else to a standard

The reality of building a career in founder-led businesses and then stepping into leadership yourself.   Today's guest is Georgina Kirby, General Manager at Kari Traa.   Georgina is an experienced outdoor industry leader with over 20 years in premium brand-led businesses. She's built her career across fast-growing, founder-led brands and now leads the instantly recognisable base layer brand, Kari Traa, part of the PE-backed Active Brands.   Her background spans senior marketing and general management leadership roles at brands including Icebreaker, Le Chameau, and Bradshaw Taylor, where she has worked across strategy, brand development, and commercial delivery.   We talk about working with founders, the energy, the pace, and the freedom that comes with it, but also the challenges that sit underneath that, and how those early experiences shape the way you lead.  People and decision-making, especially hiring, getting it wrong, spotting it too late, and what it costs the team.   As you move into more senior roles, expectations increase, the environment becomes more structured, and imposter syndrome doesn't really disappear even at a senior level, but instead becomes something you learn to manage through preparation and awareness.   We also spend time on something that doesn't get talked about enough: balancing ambition with life outside of work. Georgina shares her experience stepping back at points in her career, navigating personal challenges, and what she's learned about support, flexibility, and the environments that actually allow people to perform well.   If you're leading a team, working with founders, or stepping into a bigger role yourself, there's a lot in here that will feel familiar. Episode Highlights [00:00] Stepping into leadership while relocating your entire life [02:20] What Kari Traa actually is beyond a base layer brand [05:46] Learning retail from the shop floor at live events [10:38] When founder energy drives chaos and rapid pivots [16:11] Why global leadership is about communication, not language [20:21] The upside and volatility of working with founders [26:29] Moving from founder-led speed to private equity discipline [30:01] Why good leaders fail by not acting fast enough on people issues [33:41] What she would do differently in hindsight (career advice reflection) [35:59] The hardest leadership mistake: keeping the wrong people too long [41:21] The hidden cost of underpricing yourself as a leader [45:05] Imposter syndrome doesn't disappear, it just gets managed Notable Quotes “The best thing about founders is the passion. The hardest part is managing the emotion that comes with it.” Georgina “You don't need to be perfect as a leader. You need to create clarity and bring people with you.” Georgina “Imposter syndrome never really goes away, you just get better at managing it.” Georgina “If someone isn't the right fit, waiting too long helps no one.” Georgina “You can step back in role, but you don't have to step back in value.” Georgina Episode Takeaways Working with founders brings energy and purpose but also complexity Hiring decisions have a huge impact, and timing matters more than you think  Culture and people drive performance more than strategy alone Imposter syndrome is normal even at senior levels Preparation and clarity are key leadership tools Career paths aren't always linear and that's okay The right environment and support system make a big difference Great teams are built through diversity of thinking, not similarity Our Host   Dan Trapp is the Founder of Sports+Outdoor Search recruitment business and host of the Sports+Outdoor Mentors podcast.  With 30 years of leadership experience in the sports and outdoor industry, he has built and led global teams and, more recently, developed a strong reputation for helping brands and retailers source, assess, attract and retain exceptional leadership talent.  Having lived and worked in the UK, Switzerland, France, and Finland, for businesses owned by stakeholders from North America, Europe, and Asia, Dan brings a global lens to every conversation. TSA wait times at several major airports are shrinking after Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were temporarily deployed to help. The move comes as TSA faces staffing shortages that had led to long, often chaotic lines. While ICE officers are not replacing TSA agents, officials say their presence has helped stabilize operations and speed up screening. At airports hit hardest by delays, travelers are now reporting noticeably shorter waits and smoother security lines. Welcome to the very first episode of the Move Faster Podcast — formerly known as The Artistic Entrepreneur. In this launch episode, host Jake Isham pulls back the curtain on why he's rebranding, where this show has been, and exactly where it's going.Jake shares the raw origin story behind The Artistic Entrepreneur — a philosophy born from his own hard lessons as an actor, musician, filmmaker, and agency owner. From performing in front of thousands to running a recording studio to grinding through film school, Jake details how years of chasing art without understanding business left him broke and frustrated — while his younger brother was quietly pulling in $90K part-time with nothing more than a business mindset. That turning point sparked everything: a deep dive into entrepreneurship, a decade-plus of learning, and ultimately a new core philosophy — move faster. Jake breaks down why speed of execution has been the single greatest driver of his growth, why confronting challenges head-on accelerates success, and why he believes this principle applies to every artist and entrepreneur. He also teases what's ahead: The Artistic Entrepreneur will return as a dedicated interview series featuring successful artists, while Move Faster will be Jake's personal record — his lessons, learnings, and the ongoing journey of building something big.Think of it as the vlog Steve Jobs never made.In this episode:The origin story of The Artistic EntrepreneurWhy talent alone isn't enough — and what the business-minded artist does differentlyThe humbling moment that changed Jake's entire approachWhat "Move Faster" means as a life and business philosophyThe vision for this podcast and what's coming in 2026

Trust Velocity with Alexandra Prassas: How High-Performing Executive Teams Actually Move Faster

In this episode, Alexandra Prassas joins the show to unpack what she calls Trust Velocity — the speed at which leadership teams convert tension into decisions and decisions into execution. This isn't a soft conversation about values. It's a hard look at operating mechanics.Alexandra breaks down:How to tell if trust is truly present inside executive meetings or just being talked aboutThe subtle signals that show up in decision latency, side conversations, and unspoken hesitationWhat actually slows trust down: misaligned incentives, ego protection, unclear ownership, and political ambiguityThe difference between productive conflict that sharpens strategy and conflict that fractures teamsWhy cultural intelligence isn't about being nice, it's about reducing friction, so teams ship fasterThe line between psychological safety and performance accountability, and why you need both to avoid comfort or chaosWhat the first 30 days of trust repair look like when leadership alignment breaksWhere cross-functional misalignment most commonly starts — and the early warning signs most CEOs ignoreIf a CEO says, “I want us moving 30% faster,” Alexandra makes it clear: speed isn't a motivation problem. It's a trust architecture problem. This conversation goes beyond buzzwords and into how leadership teams actually operate, where influence, clarity, and execution either compound… or stall. For leaders who care about real alignment, measurable execution speed, and building teams that don't just preach trust but operationalize it, this one goes deep.

The CPTO Role Explained, How Product and Engineering Move Faster Together

Arnie Katz has been running product and engineering under one roof since before most companies even considered combining the roles. As CPTO at GoFundMe, he oversees the teams behind a platform processing over 2.5 donations every second, with more than $40 billion in help facilitated worldwide. Arnie breaks down why the CPTO title keeps gaining traction, how he thinks about the role like a portfolio manager, and where the real trade offs live when one person holds both the product and technology reins.Key TakeawaysThe CPTO role works like a portfolio manager. Arnie manages the company's largest investment center by balancing short term business wins against long term platform bets, knowing when to take on technical debt and when to pay it down.Velocity, coordination, and alignment are the three biggest wins. When product and engineering report to one leader, decisions happen faster, roadmap conflicts get resolved without executive tug of war, and technical investments stay tied to business outcomes. The disadvantages are real. Without separate CPO and CTO voices at the executive table, certain perspectives can get muted. His fix: build a leadership bench strong enough to create the right tension underneath him.AI is changing what small teams can deliver. GoFundMe's eight person team behind Giving Funds is shipping at a pace that would have been impossible five years ago.Timestamped Highlights[00:38] The scale most people don't realize about GoFundMe, including 2.5 donations per second and GoFundMe Pro for nonprofits.[02:02] How Arnie first landed the CPTO title at StubHub seven years ago, and why it clicked.[09:11] The real downside of collapsing two C suite roles into one, and how Arnie designs around it.[13:57] His portfolio approach to technical debt, sequencing re platforming in areas like identity and payments while other teams ship business value.[18:38] AI reshaping engineering velocity, the future of the SDLC, and product teams prototyping without writing code.[23:06] Where the CPTO model is headed as the industry evolves. The Line That Stuck"I often think of myself as a portfolio manager. My job is to invest money where the company gets the best returns, where the mission gets the best return, where the shareholder gets the best returns."Pro TipsSequence your bets instead of spreading them thin. GoFundMe gave their identity and payments teams nine months of runway to re platform with no feature expectations while other squads picked up the pace on near term results.Build leadership that creates productive friction. Without CPO vs. CTO tension at the exec level, let your VPs and SVPs push back against each other. That tension is where the best decisions come from.Think in time horizons, not just priorities. Short term moves for 0.1% to 0.5% metric lifts. Midterm bets for 1% to 5% gains. Long term swings that could transform the business. Allocate across all three. If this conversation changed how you think about product and engineering working together, share it with someone on your team. Subscribe to The Tech Trek so you never miss an episode, and connect with Arnie on LinkedIn to keep the conversation going.GoFundMe is offering listeners of The Tech Trek a chance to open their own Giving Fund. For the first 50 people who open a Giving Fund and add $25 or more to their Giving Fund, GoFundMe will add an additional $25 to that Giving Fund. If you have a Giving Fund but have never contributed into it, you can also participate. The deadline for this incentive is March 13. To get this incentive, click here to start your Giving Fund.

Today I'm thrilled to welcome my dear friend, Helen Hall back to the podcast. Helen is a movement therapist, a running coach, a pain expert and one of the best coaches in any modality that I have ever come across. She has had a lifelong passion for analysing posture and movement, and her clients include elite athletes, whether they be runners, cyclists or premier league footballers, but also everyday folk who simply want to walk or run pain-free.   She combines objective clarity from the most advanced motion analysis technology in the world, with 46 years of visual experience and study in the field, to seek out the root causes of chronic pain and injury, that often seem resistant to standard treatment protocols.    In order to help more people than those able to visit her in person, Helen first shared her movement philosophy in her wonderful book ‘Even With Your Shoes On'. Since then, Helen has created a series of online courses for professionals as well as members of the public who want to move better without pain. Her flagship online course is ‘A Troubleshooting Checklist for Walkers and Runners' and she has a brand new course ‘Stress Incontinence: An Alternative Approach'. Helen is offering 40% off for Feel Better, Live More listeners until the end of April 2025 – go to https://www.helen-hall.co.uk and use the code FBLM40.   Helen first came on my podcast on Episode 216 back in November 2021 and many of you got in touch to say how helpful the tools shared in that episode were.    In this conversation, we continue where we left off: We talk again about the vital importance of our head position – and how to become aware of how you're holding your own head, if you're struggling to know. We bust the myth that running is bad for your knees. We discuss walk-run strategies and how they can help all of us reduce injury, recover more quickly and run faster. We discuss why ‘foot wiping' - a very simple practice that I do on most days - could help you move with more ease. We talk about the importance of spending time barefoot. We discuss minimalist shoes and why we are both big fans.   Since I began working with Helen she's become a cherished friend, whose wisdom and insights cover much more than walking and running. Her message for this brilliant episode is straightforward and optimistic: think about your head, think about your feet – and don't assume that you can no longer move without pain. She is an inspiring lady, this is an inspiring conversation, I hope you enjoy listening.   Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes.
