I'm back from Italy. Bellissimo! And it's a delight to resume the relentless march of this podcast with a legend of British music media, the Venerable Allan Jones. Whether it's launching Uncut magazine – for a time my absolute favourite music magazine – or revitalising the forever missed Melody Maker during his epic stint as editor, or simply standing outside IPC towers chain smoking with me when I was a cub NME hack some 15 odd years ago, Allan has seen it, heard it, done it… and lived to tell the tales. Which he does excellently in his new book, Too Late to Stop Now: More Rock'n'Roll War Stories, in shops this Thursday, May 25th. The follow up to 2017's excellent Can't Stand Up For Falling Down, it sees Allan sharing numerous untold stories from the glory days of rock ‘n' roll and features the likes of Lou Reed, Elton John, Sting and The Clash. It was a delight, and an honour, to speak to Allan for this episode. You're a young marketer who needs a win–how do you test audio, show it works, and not get fired? Fear not, because on this episode of The Media Roundtable: Industry Edition, we're joined by a true marketing superhero: Allan Jones, CEO of Bambee. Allan shares his incredible origin story with us, including how he built the audio program from scratch for ZipRecruiter, turning them into an institution in the audio space and fueling their growth from a seed-level startup to a publicly traded billion-dollar concern. Hosted by our very own Dan Granger, CEO of Oxford Road, and joined by attribution experts Giles Martin and Kyle Jelinek, we delve into the messy and intractable issue of attribution. We explore the challenge of doling out credit fairly and how even a small improvement in attribution can unlock massive scale for your business.

What are the common characteristics of every successful person at your company? Think of those characteristics and write them down as standard operating procedures. This is critically important because when we operate under the same frequency, pace, and purpose… growth happens. But this can change instantly when a new person is added to the team. Too often we hastily add a person to the mix without understanding how they really operate on a daily basis. Assuming that they will be the answer to all of our current challenges because of the skills they are bringing to the table. There is nothing more critical to hiring success than aligning people first, and skills second. This means investing the time to dig deeper into your interview process. Understanding not just what a person accomplished but the details of exactly how it was done and why it was approached in that manner. Guest Bio: Allan Jones is at the helm of Bambee, a new type of business built on the innovative premise that every small business should have a dedicated HR Manager. This concept was derived from Jones' previous experiences working with—and growing up around—small business owners. In 2021, Goldman Sachs celebrated Allan Jones as one of the 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs at its Builders + Innovators Summit. For three years running, Forbes has named Bambee a top startup employer in the U.S., and in 2022 it announced Bambee as a Top 5 Company in Los Angeles. TODAY WE DISCUSS Understanding your company's unique characteristics How to implement critical characteristics into your interviewing & hiring process Challenge? Getting people who fit a special suite of characteristics Infinite characteristics that are valuable How do you narrow it down to 8? Being honest about who you are Characteristics of leadership values Mastery of communication Broad outcome objectivity: don't care where the right answer comes from Urgency & greatness in tandem Separate leadership & team values High potency friction Hired leader that doesn't fit, Courage to make a change Scoring system & scorecard Why is this important to the company? Looking at blemishes before celebrating wins Continuous loop of how can we be better Continuous improvement is just part o the game 200+ employees Not afraid to say “not every person is right for the company” Companies are Olympic sports teams, not govt service agencies Rick's Nuggets: How people operate within your company Core values drive the operating characteristics Adding a player to the game, not an ass to a seat How do we solve the problem? Identify that the problem exists Building leadership personas Hired multiple executives and 50% did not work out Right after fundraising Practices did not scale CEO can not make hiring decisions for the company He is not the only sign-off anymore. Interview Structure Hiring committees Only leaders sit on the committee Master of communication Cliff notes version of who you are personally & professionally Go to the resume Listening skills along with speaking Eliminated Leadership savior complex Problems would be solved by our next hire Company already had great people Never let a problem go unowned Realization that already had an A+ executive team From savior to draft pick 90% success rate Rick's Nuggets: Values drive characteristics Interviewing processStructured & designed to gather evidence to support the correct decision Assign interview questions for people alignment Follow up with what & how questions Key Takeaways that the Audience can plug into their business today! Founded in 1987 by Denise and Allan Jones, the Jones & Jones Group has served many sides of the creative world for Afro-Caribbean & multi-cultural creators. And at the head of this is today's guest, Jesse Jones. Born in Sudbury and raised in Toronto, Jesse studied marketing & communications at the University of Ottawa. Being in the nation's capital presented a coincidence that Jesse parlayed into an opportunity which would arguably help launch his career. Working at the campus radio station allowed him to apply for press credentials when the JUNO Awards were in town. While at the JUNOs, he networked his way into a sales and marketing job with Hot 89.9, which at the time was a new Ottawa FM radio station focused on hip-hop, R&B, and popular music. From there Jesse moved into marketing and PR roles with SonyBMG Canada, Youthography, and the Timex Group. And if you're a fan of realty TV and ET Canada, you're probably asking yourself: Is it THAT Jesse Jones? It is. Some of you might already know Jesse as the season one host of the Bachelor in Paradise Canada, and ET Canada's Black History Special: FORWARD, Celebrating the Future of Black Entertainment in Canada. Jesse Jones stops by to chat about his career in the boardroom and his work in front of the camera. www.mediapeople.ca www.instagram.com/vicgenova/

Stock2Me's latest podcast features Allan Jones, President of Emaginos Inc., which recently submitted a U.S. patent application for its EdManage analytics platform for public education. Throughout the interview, Jones discussed how the EdManage program was developed, how it works and the benefits it provides for students. “A few years ago, our Director of Education, Dr. Keith Larick, was school superintendent in Tracy, California. He gave three teachers a clean slate and one year to design the best possible school based on proven best education practices,” Jones said. “They did that, and they've created an amazing program that's been very effective for years. What we're trying to do is take their model and make it available to other schools. That's our goal – to transform schools to this very successful model used at the Tracy Learning Center.”

Emaginos Incorporated, a company in the business of transforming K-12 public education, today announces it has filed a provisional patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its proprietary EdManage platform, an analytics platform that aggregates and analyzes all of a school district's data to deliver actionable information to users throughout the system. EdManage integrates all of the devices and applications within a school system that traditionally operate independently. The patent application, titled “Education Analytics Platform,” was filed with the USPTO on May 25, 2021.Quote. “Aristotle is frequently quoted as saying, 'The whole is greater than the sum of the parts' – with the clarification that this is only true when the whole emerges as something other than a heap of parts,” said Emaginos President Allan Jones. “If the parts are deliberately combined systematically into some new entity, then through synergy, the new entity emerges. Calling today's K-12 public education a ‘system' is a misnomer. It could better be described as a heap of components trying to collaborate in delivering quality education to the students. The components include everything from student handheld devices to the computer or cloud servers where the applications reside, including the network on which everything communicates. The parts do not magically morph into a smoothly functioning education system. They remain a heap of parts through which educators dig as they try to facilitate learning.“For each of the parts, years of usage have evolved them individually to perform their isolated tasks. End of story – until now.” End quote. The EdManage analytics platform systematically aggregates these individual parts, morphing them into a new entity that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. One reason this morphing does not currently exist within the educational system is the sources of the parts in the heap came from many different places – most of which operated independently, using application program interfaces and other standards to communicate when needed. EdManage changes everything! Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld pointed out, quote, “There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.” End quote. Hidden in all their data, school districts have many unknown unknowns. A well-designed and implemented analytics platform provides alerts when an unknown unknown poses a threat or provides an opportunity. Therefore, there is a need to provide and implement such a platform to enhance the ability to efficiently educate children while comprehensively providing an integrated platform to coordinate all operational efforts of increasingly complex school districts. The EdManage analytics platform uses the latest technology to implement some of the world's oldest educational wisdom. About 2,500 years ago, Confucius taught, quote, “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” End quote. EdManage is a key component of the Emaginos Discovery Learning System, enabling constant opportunities to do and understand. The EdManage analytics platform aggregates and analyzes all of a district's data and then provides previously unattainable actionable information for optimizing every aspect of the district's operations. For more information about getting Emaginos in your school district, visit www.Emaginos.com Media Inquiries: press@emaginos.comFor additional information about Emaginos or to schedule an interview with Allan Jones, please contact Emaginos at (571) 921-4200.To learn more about investing in Emaginos, please visit: www.Emaginos.com*This audio content was produced by Stock Wave for Investor Brand Network. Research demonstrates that engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus, motivates their critical thinking skills, and promotes a more meaningful educational experience. What would it look like if public schools could be customized to reach students in a way that is best for them? The Emaginos Discovery Learning System offers a systemic transformation from the current teacher-centered model to a K-12 public education system that fosters a student's desire to learn. Emaginos has announced its plans to go public in 2021 to raise capital for further development and placement of its transformational public school model.Quote, “We are eager to raise funds to implement our program to unleash America's greatest natural resource – the minds of our children,” end quote, said Emaginos President Allan Jones, who has over 40 years of experience in educational innovation and improvement. To learn more, visit www.Emaginos.comCurrently, 45 states in the nation have adopted The Common Core State Standards for K-12 math and language arts created by the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officers. Many colleges and employers have growing expectations of high school graduates. However, the Common Core does not properly prepare them. To address this issue, Emaginos places its emphasis on learning how to learn, not just what to learn. The company provides a small-group, multidisciplinary, project-based curriculum to encourage active learning, not passive listening. Students do research, validate information, analyze, synthesize, discuss, and defend ideas and communicate their results. On the practical side, all students complete a multidisciplinary career project unit during which they choose an occupation, serve an apprenticeship, and develop a business plan for starting their own business. Emaginos partners with local school boards and governments to transform the existing system. Taking the lessons learned at previous Emaginos' schools and new concepts that arose as new technologies came along, Emaginos is poised to deliver the next generation learning environment. The comprehensive program includes the following techniques: STEM and enriched curriculums, dropout prevention, digital and educational equity, project-based learning, student-centered education, 21st century job skills, longer school days and years, teacher empowerment, recruitment and retention, project-based learning, student-centered education, textbook-free classrooms, community participation and service, internships and job shadowing and more. To support all these programs requires state-of-the-art technology. The Emaginos subscription service includes a complete IT and telecommunications infrastructure replacement, including refreshing the equipment every three years. The equipment being phased out will be refurbished by students (trained by Emaginos) and donated to needy students' families and selected local non-profit organizations. Families receiving the technology will be required to take training provided by the district students to ensure parents and siblings also benefit.Quote, “Emaginos' strength is in providing personalized learning for students with different styles and needs,” said Dr. Keith Larick, Emaginos' Chief Education Officer and a national leader in the field of integrating technology into teaching. ”Over the past 10 years our three beta test schools have graduated over 1,200 students representing a 96% graduation rate. Emaginos provides the tools for young people to be effective in any profession.” End quote. On average, the cost of implementing the Emaginos model per student is about the same as traditional public school programming. By going public, Emaginos will raise the needed resources to market and produce its programming for new schools around the country. Stock2Me's latest podcast features Allan Jones, President of Emaginos Inc. During the interview, Jones discussed the company's business model and its vision of leveraging proven best practices to transform public school students from passive listeners into active learners. “We're a company that's dedicated to transforming public education. We have this vision of unleashing America's greatest natural resource – the minds of our children,” Jones said. “A teachable moment occurs when the student wants to learn what the teacher wants to teach. Good teachers can recognize those and take advantage of them; great teachers can create them. What we try to do is put a situation in place that all teachers can become great teachers. We're focused on kids becoming good learners more than on the content that they learn.”

This coming Saturday, December 19, is an important day for my family: it’s my mother Jane’s 85th birthday. To pay tribute to this event, and to this very special woman, I’m presenting a program focusing on the year 1935, and important milestones in film, musicals, and the hit parade. There was such a dizzying variety of musical material in this year that it was challenging to organize, but I focus on young artists who were just entering the scene (Judy Garland, Carmen Miranda, and Édith Piaf) to émigrés to and from America (including Marlene Dietrich, Paul Robeson, Joséphine Baker, Kurt Weill, Elisabeth Welch, and Erich Korngold), to Broadway shows that debuted in that year (in performances by, among others, Ethel Merman, Libby Holman, and Nat King Cole). Along the way I pay particular focus to what was, in retrospect, the most important Broadway event of the year, the premiere of Porgy and Bess. From that show, I present performances by Todd Duncan, Anne Brown, and Ruby Elzy, all of whom created their roles. I also examine the “Latin” influence on US culture from artists like Xavier Cugat, Carlos Gardel, and Miranda, and of the enormous cultural impact (in spite of repression and discrimination) that African American artists were making (Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Alberta Hunter, Fats Wallter, and Adelaide Hall.) Finally I look at musicians who were also born in 1935 who made their mark in subsequent decades in a wide variety of styles (including Johnny Mathis, Julie Andrews, Diahann Carroll, Elvis Presley, Nancy Ford and Gretchen Cryer, and Jerry Orbach). This is not to forget figures ranging from Ruth Etting to Grace Moore to Fred Astaire to Patsy Montana to Allan Jones to Noël Coward to Benny Goodman to Lucienne Boyer to the Comedian Harmonists to Bette Davis. Please join me in celebrating all these artists, and in wishing my mother a very Happy Birthday! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody’s core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. This week, the Government’s target to be testing 100,000 a day for COVID-19 looks like it won’t be met. But we’ve heard about many people who experienced the virus mildly, or who’ve tested positive with no symptoms at all. If you really want to know who has had the virus, the only way to tell for certain is with an antibody, or serology, test. Describing how they work is Professor of Virology at Nottingham University, Jonathan Ball. Eleanor Riley, Professor of Immunology and Infectious Disease at Edinburgh University, explains why its so important to get the specificity and sensitivity of these tests right, and reveals what they can and can't tell us about individual and population-wide exposure to the virus. We like citizen science on BBC Inside Science, it’s an opportunity for anyone and everyone to try their hand at some scientific projects, learn about the scientific process and help researchers crunch through masses of data. Professor Chris Lintott co-founded Zooniverse, the biggest citizen science platform over a decade ago. He’s a regular on the programme telling us about the latest Muon-hunting, Penguin-counting, galaxy-searching opportunities they offer. But they’re not the only ones, Butterfly Conservation want you to help them track the timing of butterfly emergence in the UK and Fold.it are asking people to play their protein folding online game to help them find a possible cure for Covid-19. But back in the 1930’s BBC radio producer Mary Adams was running a series called ‘Science in the Making’, where listeners were invited to participate in, what would now be called ‘citizen science’ experiments. With topics as diverse as charting the timing of blackbird egg laying and deciphering the meaning of dreams, a scientist would explain their hypothesis and ask the audience for help. Allan Jones, a senior lecturer in computing and communications from the Open University has been digging into the BBC’s earliest public science experiments, and the woman who decided to broadcast them. As we all hunker down in our homes to flatten the coronavirus curve, finding a guest for this week’s episode was a little difficult. So I asked my friend Chris Brown (my guest in Episode 3) to come back, this time to act as the interview host, so I can share my own personal story. We sat the requisite 6 feet apart while discussing my childhood growing up in the other Valley (the San Fernando Valley), the tragic loss of my mother, and how that story both affected me in my career and relationships and how it’s now propelled me into this next phase of my life as a story collector. In 1990, my brother, mother, and I fell 60 feet down a mountain in Big Sur. My brother and mother were seriously injured, I was not. She spent the next year as a quadriplegic. No longer wishing to be a burden on our family, or to live with the pain of life in a wheelchair, she starved herself for 45 days until she passed away. Just before she died, my mother, Marlene, gave me a recording of her voice, which I cherish to this day.In this episode, Chris and I discuss how that story has impacted me and how it’s helped me come to find my passion and purpose for this next phase of my life. You can find pictures of my mother and me, our beautiful ranch, as well as my family in the SYV at SYV Stories. The Maverick Saloon is featured in Small Business Spotlight. Also mentioned in this episode are Santa Ynez MOPS, Bethania Lutheran Church, Allan Jones at Santa Ynez Valley Real Estate, Valley Wellness Collective, Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum, Dovecote Ranch, and StoryGem.
Every episode I ask my guests to name people who they have come to respect or admire in this community. In Episode 1, Allan Jones mentioned that Boyd Bettencourt played a significant role in the planning commission several decades ago, which shaped our community through its zoning laws. And while Boyd is no longer with us, Allan recommended I speak with his wife Claire. Claire Bettencourt was born on the Old College Ranch, which her family purchased in 1923. At 95 years old, she’s seen this community grow from mostly dairy farms and cattle ranches to vineyards and thriving towns. With tremendous foresight and a touch of boldness, the Bettencourts planted the first commercial vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley. Since the 50’s, the Bettencourts helped shape the community through their work with the Farm Bureau, 4H, and the Planning Commission. Claire and I look back on her life in the Santa Ynez Valley in our wide-ranging conversation.

Allan Jones, President of the Santa Ynez Valley Real Estate Company, has been a distinguished resident of the valley since 1965. The youngest of 4 brothers, the Jones family moved to the Santa Ynez Valley when Allan was just a few weeks old. In 1977, after their 4H pig project turned into a pig farm, the family bought and started the Pork Palace, which grew to 800 pigs. Allan recalls how working daily at the pig farm kept these brothers out of trouble and taught them the value of hard work. As a real estate broker for several decades, Allan has a unique knowledge and love of the Valley. We discussed how in the early days when the founders wanted to create a European style community where smaller towns were surrounded by agricultural farms and ranches, they created zoning regulations to ensure properties outside of the towns remained larger parcels. These zoning rules naturally control our community’s growth and preserve our rural way of life, as well as the natural beauty of our Valley.Allan’s commitment to serving the community is second to none. He’s served as the Solvang July 4th parade announcer for twenty years, and even sits on the board of the Oak Hill Cemetery, among his other community service pursuits. For his long record of service, he was honored by the Santa Ynez Valley Foundation as the 2018 Man of the Year.
