My guest for Episode #241 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Jazzy Collins, CSA, a Casting Director who holds the honor of being the first Black two-time Emmy® nominee in the Outstanding Reality Casting category.  Episode page with video, transcript, and more She has worked for hit reality shows including Lizzo's Watch Out For The Big Grrls (Amazon), The Circle (Netflix), The Traitors (Peacock), The Bachelor and The Bachelorette (ABC), Family or Fiancé (OWN) and Love Island (CBS).  She has been at the forefront of the movement calling for diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry, published in Deadline, E! News, ET Canada, Women's Health, and beyond. Amid her success, she has been a tireless advocate for diversity and inclusion in the industry, a topic her work frequently brings to the fore. As time went on, however, Jazzy began questioning her career trajectory. Deciding to branch out, she transitioned into digital talent management, believing it akin to her casting work. Jazzy quickly recognized it wasn't her calling. After a challenging stint in talent management, she decided it was time to return to her first love: casting. In this episode, we discuss her career mistake, how she bounced back, and what she learned. We also discuss mistakes made by the producers of "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" when it comes to DEI and representation. Read about her open letter that called out the popular franchise. Questions and Topics: When did you realize that talent management wasn't your space?? Fewer gatekeepers - more diversity shining through in digital platforms? How does one end up working in casting?  The Bachelor — Jazzy's open letter about Matt James as the first Black bachelor, after Rachel Lindsay as the first Black Bachelorette How casting can go wrong — Lee and Rachel's season Problems caused by lack of diversity behind the scenes (or in a Board) Tell us about the thought process for deciding to send the open letter… posted it to Instagram and FB — reporters picked it up Did you ever worry or wonder if the letter was a mistake? Did you hesitate to send it?  How did you gauge the reaction to it? Before the letter, how did you first try speaking out internally? It sounds like you were punished for it… What reaction did you get? Had other people come forward… Ignoring the trolls?? Good move or cynical move to cast Matt James in the summer after the George Floyd murder? What are you working on next that's new and fresh? How does somebody get cast on a reality show?

It has been a whirlwind couple of weeks for Canada's first lady of entertainment news, Cheryl Hickey. The big hit was learning that the series she has hosted for 18 seasons, ET Canada, was being shut down by Corus Entertainment. Hickey admits the move, which took effect Oct. 6, caught her as much by surprise as it did others in the industry. The native of Shallow Lake, Ont. a very small town near Owen Sound, started her career at Global 24 years ago. That's pretty much the last time I interviewed her. That interview took place at five thousand feet -- Hickey was a helicopter reporter at the time! This relaxed and fun chat was much more down to earth, with Hickey walking me through her star-studded career. I quiz her on her many Hollywood encounters and her stories about Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Quincy Jones and Kiefer Sutherland are all red carpet worthy.Hickey's own story is loaded with drive, determination, hutzpah and plenty of family support. Her aspirations and example should encourage others in Canada to reach for the stars -- even though her series no longer will. What's next for Hickey? She doesn't tell me everything now, but I'm looking forward to our next conversation.

Noelle Lambert grew up playing in the dirt and on the field with her older brothers, watching the Pats, Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox. She was always active, keeping up with the boys. Flash forward to college at UMass Lowell where Noelle is playing Division 1 lacrosse, and she's in an accident that changes everything. While riding a moped, she's sideswiped by a truck and loses her leg. Noelle's story is about what has happened since. She's most proud of how she "never let that one moment define the rest of [her] life." She relearned how to walk (and run) and got back out onto the lacrosse field, scoring a goal in her first game back. She founded Born to Run Foundation, a nonprofit providing specialized prosthetics to young adults and children who want to live a fun and fulfilling life. He says he's written more books than he's read, but Roz Weston wrote a bestseller. A Little Bit Broken is a deeply personal memoir about growing up in a small town with a loving family, yet still being compelled to make bad decisions. Addiction, self-harm, promiscuity - all followed Roz from Acton to New York to Toronto, where he eventually found a way to make it better. We talk about the best and worst celebrities to interview, why he'll never write another book, and how he kept the ending a surprise for the person that mattered most. There's also a great recipe for turkey. Roz Weston is the co-host of The Roz and Mocha Show on Toronto's Kiss 92.5. He got his break working as an intern with Howard Stern, then eventually moved on to become an entertainment reporter at ET Canada, where he spent 17 years. After publishing his memoirs, Roz became engaged to photographer Katherine Holland, with whom he shares a daughter, Roxy. Please subscribe to the YouTube channel when you get there. Hey - I've got a really great episode with my friend and colleague, Ciara Foy. We are talking frankly all about weight loss and health optimization for women.   Oh … so January of us — but it's not. This episode is an honest and powerful conversation around how Ciara empowers women to take impeccable care of themselves so that they can maintain the energy, motivation and passion it takes to go after their dreams while curating each day … and therefore the life, they choose.    Ciara is a Women's Weight Loss + Hormone Expert. She's also the author of the Amazon Bestseller "Empowered by Food" Heal Your Hormones, Balance Stress and Become Unstoppable and the founder of “The Empowered Feminine” podcast.   On her own health journey, Ciara faced and overcame weight gain, burnout, depression, and a self-destructive mindset. She now uses those experiences to help women create room for self-care and get back on track to become their happiest, healthiest selves.   In this episode we talk about: We talk about mindset and actionable strategies that are fundamental to the work she does with women. Ciara's journey to date and how she came to the work she does with women. Ciara's 1:1 relationships with women and where she starts when she begins working with them. It's all about their mindset, subconscious and limiting beliefs and understanding why they haven't had the success they are ultimately desiring. When Ciara is teaching women about weight loss, what she is actually teaching them. It goes beyond counting calories but truly understanding how food works and all the other factors that contribute to a healthy metabolism and energy management. Ciara shares the most common myths or untruths that so many of us tell ourselves that keep us stuck in unhealthy or unproductive patterns. The role of protein in keeping and building muscle mass [and why its vital to your health and metabolism], blood sugar regulation and how much we need. Why sleep is one of your most important modulators of good health and optimal weight management. Exercise and movement - how much, how often and what type. What it's like to work with Ciara in her 1:1 or group containers [and why she's so good at the work she does with women]. Dive in and enjoy the episode.   More about Ciara: When Ciara is not working out, spending time in nature or with her two daughters —she's empowering women through her podcast "The Empowered Feminine", speaking on virtual stages and providing clinical evaluation and coaching to women all over the world, from Bay Street to Wall Street, Florida to Spain and beyond. Ciara has been featured in ELLE, FLARE, ET Canada, CTV, Best Health Magazine, Canadian Living, and Body Rock TV.    Connecting with Ciara: WEBSITE INSTAGRAM PODCAST   More about Laura: I have recently opened up some opportunities for women to work 1:1 with me in personal leadership coaching. Happy Mother's Day...seems easy enough to say this time of year, but this year, it comes with a whole lot more emotion. There is an ongoing international discussion surrounding a woman's right to choose what she does with her body. I'm angry. I'm sad. I'm disgusted. I'm disappointed. Why are we still defending a woman's right to choose what she does with HER body? We're going to have to get into this on a future episode, and please stay tuned in the coming weeks for a guest that will help us dig into this topic appropriately.  For now, this episode celebrates a woman's right to CHOOSE.If there's anything I've learned while doing this podcast, it's that every woman has their own story. Their own priorities. Their own triggers. While having a family isn't part of everyone's story, it's a beautiful part of many stories that have been told here. I admire all the women who basically have two full time jobs, raising children while chasing their dreams. Some of these stories are traumatic, and some of them are up-lifting. My guests often share stories about their own mothers, too; some of whom are no longer with us. One thing I want you to keep in mind, is how many former guests on this podcast DIDN'T share their stories because they are too painful. Silent struggles are everywhere and we need to be more aware of this.In this episode, you'll hear the voices of women whose mothers have inspired their careers, women raising children while working in media, and women who ache because they can't. I'd like to dedicate this episode to my mom, who did the unthinkable in raising me. There is no greater gift than you believing in me and everything I do.  As much as I try to incorporate her into my podcasting, radio show or anything else, she prefers to leave this kinda stuff to me. Love you, Mom. Thank you if you submitted a question or comment about motherhood in the media; let's celebrate motherhood and a woman's right to choose by revisiting some former episodes and some great conversations. This got me thinking about matriarchy; A Matriarch is defined as a woman who is the head of a family or tribe or an elder within a family organization. While it's common to assume it's someone who birthed a child…we can also think about this from a female leadership perspective. Happy Mothers Day to those celebrating, big love to those hurting, and hell yeah to those fighting for our right to choose.

My guest today is Jim Buehler. Jim, who claims that he is just a “regular guy” recently returned from a 10 day trip helping Ukrainian refugees cross the border into Poland. Jim's open-heart surgery a year ago metaphysically opened his heart to care deeply about the Ukrainian refugees, enough so to feel compelled to take action. Jim and his college roommate, friend of 50 years, Lorne Adrian, helped the incoming, weary Ukrainian women, children and elderly find warmth, food, shelter, and safe passage to wherever their new upended lives would take them. Networking with local contacts, Jim and Lorne efficiently and effectively transported families from border crossings to refugee centers and train stations. They bought urgently requested supplies, in particular 5 large generators for bombed out buildings and hospitals. Check out the show notes for links to the organizations that Jim trusts, as well as some articles written about his heart-driven experience. Enjoy the podcast!
