Marion reveals surprising behind-the-scenes tension from Happy Days, explaining that Tom Bosley initially didn't want her as his TV wife because he came from Broadway (having won a Tony for "Fiorello") and wanted someone "more important." She candidly shares how it took a long time for them to develop a genuine friendship, though Tom was ultimately "a really nice man, a very good man." Marion explains the memoir's title reflects both her happy television success and the difficult "otherwise" period between ages 40-50 when she went through a challenging divorce.Marion discusses how her son, actor Jim Meskimen (known for the Geico George Washington commercial), literally had to convince her to write the book by bringing writer David Laurel to her house. She describes her preferred method of storytelling - being recorded in conversation rather than typing - and how the collaborative process made the memoir possible. Marion shares incredible stories from her diverse career, including performing Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit" live on CBS with Claudette Colbert, Lauren Bacall, and Coward himself, working with Cary Grant, playing a Jewish Polish grandmother on "Brooklyn Bridge," voicing characters on SpongeBob SquarePants, and appearing as Drew Carey's mother. Now retired and living at "Happy Days Farm," Marion continues connecting with fans through book signings across the country, from San Francisco to Missouri to New York, where hundreds of devoted fans line up to meet the woman who made Mrs. C a household name.

History and politics have long found their way onto the Broadway stage, from Hamilton and 1776 to Parade and Fiorello! But in 1989, one musical took a wildly unconventional approach—bringing the infamous Senator Joseph McCarthy to life in Senator Joe. Helmed by Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar director Tom O'Horgan, this audacious and bizarre production featured everything from Brechtian satire to a musical number inside McCarthy's alcohol-ravaged liver. Yet, after only three Broadway previews, the show collapsed under the weight of its own chaos, ending in scandal when its producer was arrested in a phone booth. How did Senator Joe go so wrong? And why did anyone think a musical about McCarthyism would work in the first place? This episode dives into the missteps, mayhem, and misguided ambition that turned a political firebrand into one of Broadway's most infamous flops. Theme Music created by Blake Stadnik. Has any American mayor ever made a greater stamp on the public consciousness than the Little Flower, Fiorello La Guardia, mayor of New York City from 1934 to 1945? La Guardia is brought to life in historian Terry Golway's “I Never Did Like Politics”: How Fiorello La Guardia Became America's Mayor, and Why He Still Matters (St. Martin's Press, 2024). The podcast tracks with Golway's thematic approach to his book, which features chapters on “In Defense of Democracy,” “The Immigrant's Friend,” and “The Anti-Politician Politician.” Golway recognizes and celebrates the Little Flower as a champion of enduring American political and cultural values that, once again today, as in his times, are under severe and seemingly unremitting stress. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the second movie in the Spider-Verse film series and the 14th (not a typo) Spider-Man feature film. It has made more than half a billion dollars worldwide, and it is the fourth-highest grossing movie of 2023 so far. A third Spider-Verse movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is expected to come out next year, and a Spider-Woman spinoff film is in development. And: “Whether you have spent the past decade and a half avoiding Marvel movies like scabies or are in so deep that you can expound on the Sokovia Accords, it is impossible to escape the films' intergalactic reach,” according to Michael Schulman in The New Yorker. And it's hard to argue that he's wrong. The Nose looks at “How the Marvel Cinematic Universe Swallowed Hollywood.” Some other stuff that happened this week, give or take: Sheldon Harnick, ‘Fiddler on the Roof' Lyricist, Dies at 99 His collaborations with the composer Jerry Bock also included “Fiorello!” — which, like “Fiddler,” was a Tony winner — and “She Loves Me.” Young People Have No Idea What We Used to Do After Work. Let Me Regale You. “I never knew what time it was, so I was constantly buying watches and losing them.” Pixar's ‘Elemental' Falls Flat, Adding to Worries About the Brand The original animated film took in $29.5 million at the box office, by far the worst opening in Pixar's three-decade history. “The Flash,” from Warner Bros., also struggled. The Troubling Pixar Paradox Recent misses and low expectations for ‘Elemental' beg the question: Has Pixar lost its magic touch? Perhaps the answer is that original animation is now a smaller business—one that can't necessarily support the unique culture and $200 million budgets that made Pixar great in the first place. Pixar Boss Pete Docter Says the Studio ‘Trained' Families to Expect Disney+ Debuts, ‘Elemental' Buzz at Cannes Was ‘Confusing' Richard Kind Just Doesn't Want to Be Left Out Maybe that's why everyone in Hollywood has this master of comedy and tragedy on speed dial. This is the second half of my conversation with Thomas Hischak whose new book is titled The Abbott Touch — Pal Joey, Damn Yankees and the Theatre of George Abbott. If you missed part one, you may want to catch up with the previous episode before listening to this one. George Abbott was a major force in the American Theater for more than 80 years. As an actor, director, playwright, and producer — and often several of those at the same time — he played a significant role in the creation of well over 100 Broadway plays and musicals including Jumbo, The Boys From Syracuse, On The Town, Where's Charlie, Call Me Madam, The Pajama Game, Once Upon A Mattress and Fiorello to name only a few. Thomas Hischak is the author of more than 30 books about Broadway, Hollywood and popular music including Musical Misfires — three decades of Broadway Musical heartbreak, The Mikado to Matilda — British Musicals on the New York Stage, and the Tin Pan Alley Encyclopedia. At the end of our previous episode Thomas Hischak and I were just beginning a discussion of the remarkable list of Broadway greatest writers, directors and choreographers who were all in essence trained and mentored by Mr. Abbott including Rodgers & Hart, Comden, Green & Bernstein, Adler & Ross, Bock & Harnick, Kander & Ebb, Jerome Robbins and most especially, Harold Prince. We also explore his reputation as a "show doctor." We will never now how many shows he advised and "fixed" on their way to Broadway. Become A PATRON of Broadway Nation!
