Today on the show I get to chat with Amber Rubarth! Amber left home at 17 years old to become a chainsaw sculptor in Nevada. At 21, she quit and decided to begin writing songs and teaching herself guitar. One of her early originals was awarded Grand Prize in NPR's Mountain Stage New Song contest. She has performed hundreds of stages around the world, from the early days opening for a flea circus at a Texas theme park, to performing an original duet with Jason Mraz at Carnegie Hall, to full orchestral arrangements of her songs with the Ithaca Chamber Orchestra woven into classical works. She moves fluidly between genres, creating a unique palette of instrumentation for what best serves the song. After many years of solo touring, Amber lights up these days with collaborations in both film and music. She has written original songs and score for numerous films including Sundance festival winner 'Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work' and the super-marathon documentary 'Desert Runners.' She co-founded 'The Paper Raincoat,' a Brooklyn-based iTunes Indie Artist Spotlight band featured in Disney's 'The Last Song,' the CW's 'One Tree Hill,' and Paste Magazine who said “We think the world might be a little better if everyone heard this record.” In 2016 she recorded a live-to-tape single microphone album with her folk trio 'Applewood Road' which the London Sunday Times gave 5 stars, calling it "a flawless set that has to be the most haunting release of the past year” which led to performances at Glastonbury Music Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, a UK tour supporting Mary Chapin Carpenter, and her original arrangement and performance featured in the 'BBC Sisters in Country' documentary with Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. Her most recent album, Cover Crop, is 15 reinterpreted songs exploring the disconnection and remembrance of our interconnectivity with nature. Self-produced and performed by Amber Rubarth in the woods of the Hudson Valley, New York.Today Amber shares with us how she went from chainsaw sculpture to musician, what's different about her musical work then and now, how she takes care of herself (with her Matcha ritual), why and how she made the Cover Crop album, and plays a few songs for us too!Amber on InstagramHere's the Tarot Reading from Nikki Fogerty for those who want to revisit. NeeNee Rushie grew up in Jamaica where her mom and her 3 sisters raised her. She's always been very touched by music and songs from a very early age. She sang in church and school choirs since the 4th grade- when she discovered that she had a talent for singing and performing.NeeNee moved to NY in 2003 and went to college in New Paltz in 2005 where she met the original drummer and Rob (their current bass and musical director) that same year. The band would form in a couple of years. Since then, they have released 5 full length studio albums, a couple live EPs, performed all over the country and experienced countless strange and unforgettable moments. The band has had some line up changes over the years. Some wonderful musicians have come and gone. Rob, Chas and NeeNee are original members. Guthrie, Manuel, Roger and Ryan have been on board for several years now. The band operates like a family. They play reggae-ish, ska-ish, world-ish grooves, sprinkled with some soul-ish nuggets. When NeeNee became a mother, their strategy changed from playing tons of shows, to being more picky about the shows they play. She realized that she was going to have to make the same or stronger impact, but by playing less shows. NeeNee's daughter really regenerated a new love for the band in her. Her daughter has taken a major interest in the band and their music, and that has given NeeNee a new perspective. She's never felt more passionate about the band and is feeling prouder of what they have done, and more confident about what they are working on.https://www.bigtakeoverband.com/On today's show NeeNee shares about her childhood and the music that she was surrounded by while living in Jamaica and what it was like leaving her home and her mama. We talk about her process for writing and collaborating with the band, being a woman in a male dominated industry, and listen to a few songs and hear what they mean to NeeNee. Of course, we also talk about motherhood, how that's impacted her and the band, and how they are evolving as a result. They have two local shows coming up. First up is at The Falcon on September 28th and then The Linda in Albany on October 26th.Here's the Tarot reading that I shared from Nikki Foggerty. "I bring love and compassion to myself and embrace all the possibilities that lie ahead.. "We listened to a song from Amber Rubarth who will be a guest on the show Sept. 9th. She's also playing this benefit...Neighbors for Neighbors on September 14th supporting People's Place and the O+ Festival. Here's a link to today's playlist.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFYITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCAFollow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast

This week, Fariha Róisín offers both timely and timeless wisdom on what it means to live in a body that has experienced trauma. This is a conversation that bears witness to the deep terror and distress of the world and still charges forward with undying compassion and care – the compassion and care of wild survival. Offering both deep personal reflection and spacious contemplation about the state of the world, Fariha reminds us that our bodies guide us to what we need. This episode brings up the things that we so often don't want to touch – trauma, abuse, global systems of disregard – and handles them with care and love. Fariha shows us what it means to take pain seriously.Throughout the episode Fariha threads in a profound relationship with god, and a type of faith that is filled with questioning, fueled by queer thought, and driven by love. In even the darkest of times we can turn to love, accountability, and community to find the care that we need. Fariha Róisín is a multidisciplinary artist, born in Ontario, Canada. She was raised in Sydney, Australia, and is based in Los Angeles. As a Muslim queer Bangladeshi, she is interested in the margins, in liminality, otherness and the mercurial nature of being. Her work has pioneered a refreshing and renewed conversation about wellness, contemporary Islam and queer identities and has been featured in The New York Times, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, and Vogue. She is the author of the poetry collection How To Cure A Ghost (2019), as well as the novel Like A Bird (2020), Who Is Wellness For? (2022) and her second book of poetry is entitled Survival Takes a Wild Imagination, due fall 2023.For an extended version of this episode join us at patreon.com/forthewildMusic by Misha Sultan (with special thanks to Patience Records), Amo Amo, Colloboh (with special thanks to Leaving Records), and Amber Rubarth. AMERICAN FOLK tells the story of two strangers grounded on the morning of September 11, 2001. Elliott (Joe Purdy) and Joni (Amber Rubarth) are unexpectedly thrust together amidst the chaos of that historic day. With little in common but both needing to get to NYC urgently, they accept help from Joni's family friend Scottie (Krisha Fairchild) who lends the duo a rusty old 1972 Chevy Van. The shock and stress of 9/11 quickly threatens to derail their cross country journey until the pair discover what they do have in common: a love for old folk songs. Armed with a pile of guitars left in the van from Scottie’s touring days, Elliott and Joni raise their voices together (and with those they meet on the road), re-discovering the healing nature of music and bearing witness to a nation of people who, even while mourning, manage to lift each other up in the wake of tragedy. With a refreshing gentleness and beauty, AMERICAN FOLK lovingly chronicles the spaces between the suffering and fear, where music has the power to connect. Musicians Joe Purdy and Amber Rubarth give nuanced and thoughtful performances, with voices that are uplifting and achingly gorgeous. Filmed over 3,500 miles in 14 states, AMERICAN FOLK serves as a love letter to the natural beauty of America, to the style of music that has shepherded us through historically tough times and to the kindness of all of the "folk" that make America what it is. Director David Heinz and Cinematographer Devin Whetstone talk about the challenges of filming in cramped quarters, capturing the spirit of a surprisingly united people coping with a disintegrating civic society. https://www.americanfolkmovie.com/
Host Paul Booth reviews American Folk Written and Directed by: David Heinz Starring: Joe Purdy, Amber Rubarth, Krisha Fairchild (Krisha) & David Fine (The Pursuit of Happyness) Filmed over 3500 miles in 14 states, musicians Joe Purdy and Amber Rubarth star as two strangers, both folk musicians, whose fates become intertwined after their plane is grounded in California following the September 11th attacks. Both desperately needing to get back to New York, they embark on a cross-country journey in a 1972 Chevy Van. Along the way, the duo finds solace in their mutual love of classic folk songs, and raising their voices with everyday people they meet on the road. They re-discover the healing nature of music and bear witness to a nation of people who lift each other up in the wake of tragedy.

American Folk, a feature film that's already won numerous jury prizes at film festivals, starts its theatrical run in late January of 2018. First time writer/director David Heinz wanted true-life folk singers to play the lead characters, rather than actors playing at folk singing. And Amber Rubarth is a certified folk singer. Raised in California, she discovered music as a creative outlet at about 20 years old, but as soon as she took her fresh voice to New York in the 2000s she found support and collaborators and was soon making records. Rubarth's music won several significant prizes, including the Mountain Stage New Song Contest. She stands out for her playful lyrical style and daring sense of imagery. As well as her affinity for collaborations. She's released a half dozen albums on her own, including the recent Wildflowers in the Graveyard. Amber talks about her background, her acting debut and how a life altering accident inspired her latest recording. Also, guest producers Matt Follett and Brady Watson report on the multi-year effort to revive and amplify the vital legacy of soul and R&B music in the development and future of Music City.
Songs written and performed with striking clarity. Probably like hearing James Taylor for the first time in the early 70's. No masks, no smoke, no mirrors. And best of all, Amber has an equally goes-down-easy personality making this episode so very enjoyable to listen to. Rubarth's stellar latest "Wildflowers In The Graveyard" was released September 29 2017. Buy it, and maybe a box of graham crackers too.
Working Class Audio Session #135 with Jacquire King!!!Jacquire King is known for his work with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, James Bay, Modest Mouse, You Me At Six, Buddy Guy, Norah Jones, Of Monsters and Men, Josh Ritter, Cold War Kids, Punch Brothers, City and Colour, Moon Taxi, Robert Ellis, Amber Rubarth and Dawes. Our interview takes place at Jacquire's private studio outside of Nashville, Tennessee where he graciously invited me over to have a chat and discuss our common connection to the Bay Area. We discuss his time there coming up as someone trying to make his mark in the studio scene and the changes that eventually convinced him to move to Nashville. We follow that up with his transition into Nashville and the struggles that followed and of course the success that followed that. Jacquire is a thoughtful and low key person who shares his views on what inspires him and how he works to inspire others. I have to say this interview really inspired me and got me thinking about my own career and what I can do to move it forward. I hope you have the same experience. -Matt
AMBER RUBARTH has become a fixture in New York's indie scene, named #1 Best of NYC Songwriter by Deli Magazine last year and grand prize winner of NPR's Mountain Stage New Song Contest. At 21 years old, Amber decided to quit her career as a chainsaw sculptor in Nevada in order to pursue music. She taught herself guitar, began playing open mics and recorded her songs, which soon received over 1.5 million listens on MySpace through word of mouth alone. Amber's latest is a live album 'Sessions from the 17th Ward' features Dave Eggar on cello who will be performing with her on WoodSongs. THE RAGBIRDS are a fusion of folk rock and pop hooks over danceable world rhythms stirred with a Celtic fiddler's bow. Hailing from Ann Arbor, MI, the energy of multi-instrumentalist Erin Zindle demands attention. She is the songwriter and front woman of the band, skillfully switching between violin, mandolin, accordion, banjo and percussion, all while dancing. The release of The Ragbirds' fourth studio effort 'Travelin' Machine' is a new milestone for the band.
