Nicky Schrire is a multitalented and inventive British-South African vocalist and composer based in Toronto, Canada. Her work has seen her likened to vocalists Joni Mitchell, Norma Winstone, and Esperanza Spalding with The BostonGlobe's Jon Garelick noting that “though her approach has earned her comparisons to Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens, the similarities are superficial…she's got her own thing, and it's very much worth listening to.”A graduate of the South African College of Music and New York's Manhattan School of Music, she studied with Anthea Haupt, Peter Eldridge, Theo Bleckmann, and Dave Liebman. Schrire has performed in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, London, Dublin and South Africa, with musicians including Ben Wendel, Gerald Clayton, Fabian Almazan, Nir Felder, and Taylor Eigsti. She released three critically acclaimed jazz albums-2012's "Freedom Flight", 2013's "Space and Time", and the 2014 EP "To The Spring"-which earned her comparisons to songwriters like Joan Baez and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Her duo album “Space & Time” featured Grammy-nominated pianists Gerald Clayton, Gil Goldstein and Fabian Almazan. The Ottawa Citizen's Peter Hum described the recording as “fifty minutes of emotionally eventful, richly crafted music”.Support the show

Segunda hora.
Summer tour 2011 was similar to the '84 GD. At times erratic with work coming in prolific streaks followed by sustained periods of hibernation. Still the periods of hibernation sowed the seeds of dreams which were than executed and made believable. My first guest upon returning to the Monsoon Laden desert was Lew Tabackin. Lew T grew up in the underprivileged side of Philadelphia. When in high school during a small band competition Lew was trying to sound like Trane while others were copying the sounds of west coast be-bop. He made his way to New York and became accustom to playing in front of many of his brothers who would sit and make comments about his playing within earshot. This is a story of trial by fire although the competition was good. Lew played on both coasts and spent sometime in Los Angeles playing with the great Billy Higgins. They made an album together in 1978 called "Black and Tan Fantasy." It was on a small label originally issued under Lew's wife, the great pianist Toshiko AKiyoshi. Last month I saw their grandson make his debut on trumpet at Gil Goldstein's July 4th spectacular. Rebirth and Regeneration. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support
My guest today relentlessly pursues individual sound. He knows the spirit inside him sings from an island shore in the middle of the world, a cotton field in New Madrid Missouri or at Smalls Paradise in Harlem where Jimmy Smith would groove that organ like a wailer. My guest today is a conductor of major symphony orchestras in the US and Canada so he has roots in the classical idiom but when performing he likes to swing the band like Tony Williams except unlike polyrhythms my guest uses his voice polyphonic ally performing the main melody and accompanying parts of the song. He blends this with the soul of Bill Withers, Save Me Jesus in Grandmas hands with Gil Scott Heron and Leon Thomas. Every time my guest performs he carries with him the burning spear of electricity. Being able to project with confidence and clairvoyance be it the Pink Panther or The PBS series This is Your Brain on Music or coming over the top of a Gil Goldstein accordion solo. My guests individuality has led to 10 Grammy awards, invitations to play all over the world spreading his message of spirituality not religiosity and the conjoining of faith with the incandescent vocal as libs, beats, cuica's, and spoken word that make music the magic that it is. Bobby McFerrin, welcome to the JFS --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support
What is needed in these adverse times? We turn to our spirit guides, our philosopher kings, our rabbis: the musicians. Because although this particular form of adversity is new, musicians have been choosing to feel good in spite of adverse conditions for a long time. In this episode, we explore the nature of the musician joke, particularly the jazz musician joke. Jokes about gigs, drummers, singers, trombone players, viola players, junkies, 3 legged pigs, bagpipes, bar mitzvahs, African safaris, little old ladies, family therapy, tattoo parlors, monkeys, genies, it’s all here. In other words, the classics. Featuring Steven Bernstein, Amy Cervini, Peter Coyote, Ethan Eubanks, Donald Fagen, James Farber, Steve Gadd, Hilary Gardner, Gil Goldstein, Steve Khan, Ashley Kahn, Tessa Lark, Will Lee, Phil Lyons, Les McCann, Adam Nussbaum, Ben Sidran, Janis Siegel, Larry Ratso Sloman, Dave Stoler, Jack Stratton, Neil Tesser, Michael Visceglia, Michael Winograd, and more.

Born and raised in Houston TX, Chris Walker began singing before he began speaking. He got his start in the church as a member of his family gospel group, The Walker Brothers. Chris plays the bass upside down like one of his early hero’s Jimi Hendrix. The Walker’s raised their children with a strong hand, and once Chris graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, he was all too happy to high-tail it to New York, with only forty dollars, in pursuit of his dreams of doing his own music. With aspirations of attending the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, he sold his bass amp and bought a one-way ticket to New York; despite being denied due to inability to pay the tuition. Fate, however, would intervene as Walker was walking the halls and happened to come upon a jam session in need of a bass player. When he took the stage the school dean just so happened to hear him and offered him a full scholarship on the spot and so begun another chapter in his musical journey. As a student and lover of jazz music, it was an opportunity that came via a former teacher, Gil Goldstein, that would bring to fruition a longtime dream of Walker to work, as Musical Director, with seven-time Grammy Award winner Al Jarreau. In honor of the late Mr. Jarreau, Chris Walker has released a new cd: We're In This Love Together: Celebrating Al Jarreau. Follow Chris on Facebook & Twitter.
It’s been seven years since we last visited with Michael Franks, when he had just released his last studio album “Time Together.” In a few weeks, his brand new album “Music In My Head” is set to be released and it continues in his tradition of combining elements of jazz, pop, and Brazilian styles, with his unmistakable voice leading the way. “Music In My Head” was a collaboration with several producers, arrangers and musicians, including the late Chuck Loeb, Jimmy Haslip, Scott Petito, Gil Goldstein, Charles Blenzig, Bob Mintzer, David Spinozza, Eric Marienthal, Manuel Quintana, Rachel Z, Billy Kilson, Larry Koonse and many more. The album drops in early June, but during our chat with Michael we’ll play a few samples to whet your appetite. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome back Michael Franks.
Happy New Year to all from Hip-Bone Music! No better way to kick off our 2018 bone2pick series than by sitting down with the always virtuosic, always ingenious and always impassioned, Dr. Gil Goldstein. As only he can, Gil takes us on an insightful and entertaining ride through the highlights of his extraordinary career. Meeting Pat Martino for the first time in the mid 70s, the influence of his longtime friend and mentor Gil Evans, his decades of work with Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker, starting out on the accordion at age 5 and ultimately becoming the world’s second greatest accordionist and why Pat Metheny has called him the Zelig of jazz. Definitely one you don’t want to miss! Enjoy.
Publican "Round about Amstrong".

Gil Goldstein is an arranger, composer, educator, pianist and accordionist. He has arranged projects for artists including Michael Brecker, Esperanza Spalding, Boz Scaggs, Michael Franks, Dave Sanborn, Chris Botti, The Manhattan Transfer, Paul Simon, and Pat Metheny, and produced projects for Bobby McFerrin, Jane Monheit, Mike Stern, Jim Hall and Randy Brecker…and more. His book, The Jazz Composers Companion, is in its third edition.Gil’s meeting and subsequent work with Gil Evans had a profound effect on his professional trajectory. Goldstein would become the piano player in Gil Evans band for the final years of Evans career, and when Gil Evans passed away, it was Gil Goldstein who kept the flame alive as the musical director of the band. This is an extremely deep conversation. The first half is an overview of Gil’s early development and career, and the second half is a treasure trove of information for anyone interested in arranging. Gil explains how he thinks about arranging, specifically the importance of the overtone series, the fibonacci sequence, and ultimately the idea of the “universal musical mind”. He says, “You have an intimate relationship that is not coming from your brain – your choices are so organic that you almost don’t have a choice. Your soul tells you that this is the next phrase…as you do that you’re somehow tuning in to what nature tells us from the overtone series.”Gil really delivered some of his knowledge, wisdom and musical world view in this conversation, and in sharing that, he shared some of the deeper truth about who is as well.Stream it here or download it from the iTunes Music Store.www.gilgoldstein.us

Although she's already firmly established as one of the jazz world's most acclaimed and respected young vocalists, Nicole Henry's vibrant new album Embraceable makes it clear that she can't be categorized so simply. "I consider myself a singer who loves singing jazz," notes the versatile Miami Beach-based artist. "However, no matter the style or story, I'm always striving to be myself.”powerfully expressive, emotionally resonant voice has already earned her three international top 10 albums, the most recent being her 2008 release The Very Thought of You. She's also won an international reputation as a beguiling live performer, enchanting audiences on multiple continents. The aptly titled Embraceable showcases the uplifting energy, sophisticated soulfulness and lyrical sensitivity that have endeared Henry to listeners around the world. However, the new album is a substantial departure from her prior releases, which established her as a peerless interpreter of jazz and pop standards. In contrast, Embraceable finds Henry applying her sublime vocal skills to a captivating set of songs drawn from a diverse array of sources, encompassing impressive new originals, covers of some '60s and '70s classics, and a trio of vintage jazz numbers. The material is delivered in a variety of musical settings that range from expansive orchestral arrangements to spare acoustic performances. The album matches Henry's distinctive voice and abundant charisma with a stellar musical cast that includes saxophonist Kirk Whalum, pianist Gerald Clayton, harmonica virtuoso Gregoire Maret, and Grammy-winning arranger Gil Goldstein, and was helmed by Grammy-nominated producer Matt Pierson (Kirk Whalum, Jane Monheit, Joshua Redman).
