At last the long awaited Xbox 360 Hypervisor exploit shown by Grimdoomer has arrived in the form of Bad Update! This means that unsigned code can be run on any Xbox 360 up to Kernel/Dashboard 17559 using only a USB drive and the NTSC version of Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. This does not require any other modifications to be done to the hardware and can be performed on an unopened and unmodified console, making this the first software-only exploit available for the latest system software version! As this episode will only be focused on Bad Update, we walk through where this started from Tony Hawk's Pro Strcpy, read through a couple of blog posts Grimdoomer made leading up to the release, and of course we set up and try Bad Update for ourselves before giving some final thoughts.

I remember several weekends we would even carry our tvs to each others houses and have multiple games going at once. pizza tons of soda and nothing but laughs. bozo — Yesterday at 10:14 AM I was very late to the party with THPS - I only got into the series around 2016 as I was building up my OG Xbox library and had 2x/3/4 on hand to see what all the fuss was about. Going in, I was expecting it to be the kind of game that hasn't aged well; one whose reputation was heavily embellished by nostalgia for the era it represented.   Needless to say, I was very, very wrong. THPS totally holds up. And the gameplay mechanics on offer are not only ridiculously deep, but fluid and cohesive in a way few other games can match even today. Chaining tricks into manuals into ramps into reverts is an absolutely sublime gameplay loop that never gets old.   I'm always bothered whenever THPS gets lumped into the generic "Sports" categorization, when in reality it has way more in common with combo-oriented action games like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta than say, Madden. I think that's why it quickly became one of my all-time favorite series despite completely missing out on them when they were in the zeitgeist.   Oh yeah, and the soundtrack? It shreds. As a huge pop-punk fan I couldn't ask for more.   I'll never forgive Activision-Blizzard for shutting down Vicarious Visions and cancelling the THPS 3+4 remaster. 1+2 is arguably the best remaster ever made, and is easily the apex of the entire franchise, despite the moribund state the franchise was in for the previous 15 years.   Thanks for listening to the RetroLogic Podcast! Welcome Science Fiction aficionado and listener of the Dead Hand Radio podcast. If you're a listener of Dead Hand Radio, you know this podcast is centered on the events of the cold war, but that's not all it is. It's only been around since March of 2020 and is constantly evolving. After several months of strictly talking about The Cold War, I decided to change up the format and did a whole series on The Paranormal for Halloween. 12 episodes in all, with guests from different backgrounds and interests, who joined me and through their experiences and anecdotes took listeners on a journey through the world of spirits, ghost stories and haunted locations. We talked about cursed lands, myths, legends and lore. It was a blast, and it really opened my eyes as to what this podcast can become. After that series I wanted to expand the platform even more and decided to add a new element to the line up of interesting content. So from this point on, I will occasionally be bringing on people interested in pop culture, movies, comics, books, art and everything else in between related to the incredible world of Science Fiction. Have you ever felt like food waste was such a big and mind-boggling problem that you desperately wanted some perspective on how things ended up this way? If so, you need to meet Jonathan Bloom. To understand the extent of food waste in the United States as well as what causes it, he dove headfirst into our food system, spending time working on a farm, at a restaurant, in a catering company, and stocking shelves at a supermarket. The result was his groundbreaking book "American Wasteland: How America Throws Away Nearly Half of Its Food (and What We Can Do About It)." In our chat, we discuss why grocery shopping more often is a powerful way to prevent waste, why the timing of recess in schools matters more than we realize, and we dissect Jonathan's hot take that composting might not be the environmental victory that many of us assume it is.Whether you're looking to learn more about food waste or are fed up with stats about waste and just want some practical ways to take it on in your life, this episode is packed with timeless wisdom and actionable lessons for you! Tinia Pina, the Founder and CEO of Re-Nuble, talks with us about how to all that waste in a way that won't kill the planet. How much waste are we talking about? 12,000 tons of food waste is produced annually in New York City. That much food waste would take 800 fully loaded garbage trucks to remove. And the city of New York is spending $180 million a year to get rid of it.The numbers sound crazy when you first hear them.  New York City is spending $180 million annually to deal with food waste.  For a while, it was being loaded on barges and shipped off to China. Today, capacity is still an issue as NYC food waste is shipped off to neighboring states. There are commercial storage facilities to help out, but there's still a lot of food waste with nowhere to go. Tinia Pina thought there had to be a better way. Her startup Renuble has joined the list of innovators who are recycling food waste into organic compost, as a soil amendment. When you think of food waste, you might think of the scraps you scrape from your plate or the food that restaurants throw away but there is also food waste created when food is processed, even before it makes it onto your plate. Wholesale food distributors buy directly from farms and re-package food to sell to schools or restaurants, they often throw out the stuff that's less than perfect. Food waste is 75% liquid. A company called Industrial Organic can go to your processing facility, draw out the liquid, digest and sterilize the food waste, leaving you with organic fertilizer. In another approach, Misfit Juicery, based in DC, is sourcing food waste all the way from New York City and turning it into a cold pressed drink. In LA, Pulp Pantry is using the post-juice pulp from your favorite juice bar and turning it into fiber-rich granola.Soil is lost at a rate of 10 to 40 times as fast as it can replenish itself. Conventional farming is stripping soil of carbon and nutrients and 70% of the earth's topsoil is vanishing, because of erosion. To feed the world that soil has to be replaced, that's where fertilizer comes in. Jonathan Bloom wrote in American Wasteland that about 40% of the food we produce ends up being thrown away. The annual cost of that, he says, is $100 billion.Key TakeawaysBuy groceries according to your needs. Supermarkets buy produce based on projections. If you find that you're buying more than what you actually need and wasting about 20% of it, then that waste also is translated upstream to the supermarkets.Plants like good dirt.  Crops need organic fertilizer to thrive, instead of the chemical "junk food" they often receive with industrial farming. Turning food waste into nutrient-rich organic fertilizer helps solve the waste problem and also helps the plants that feed us.Listen to my conversation with Tinia Pina about how she is changing what happens to food waste and building a better story for food and the supply chain that feeds us all.Click the podcast player in the header to hear the whole episode, or in the interactive transcript below, click on any play button to hear that part of the conversation.Jonathan Bloom wrote in American Wasteland that about 40% of the food we produce ends up being thrown away. Tinia has some suggestions for you in the podcast.I feel like this is my purpose and in addition to the experiences that I've had, it has supported my dedication to it. So I'm a huge environmentalist and just, kind of, as hard as agriculture can be, I really feel like this has kind of been just something that I'm here for and that's why I kind of remain dedicated to it. - Tinia Pina

Constipated? Take relief: it's probably not because your sphincter is too tight. In this month's episode of SHHH, The Puru sits down with Dr. Daniel Gerling, Assistant Professor at Augustana University and perhaps the foremost expert on poop history in the United States (who else could write the dissertation, "American Wasteland: A Social and Cultural History of Excrement, 1860-1920"?). Hear Danny explain why American occupiers collected over 120,000 jars of Filipino feces, how the demodex (eyelash mite) may be the only creature that doesn't poop, and why sphincter expanders were recommended as a cure for constipation in the early 1900s. Put down that fork--this is one fascinating hour you might not want to eat through.   Also mentioned in this conversation: Thomas Jefferson, Dominique LaPorte, History of Shit, Tlazolteotl, Austin TX, John G. After reading American Wasteland, you will never look at your shopping list, refrigerator, plate or wallet the same way again. Jonathan Bloom wades into the garbage heap to unearth what our squandered food says about us, why it matters, and how you can make a difference starting in your own kitchen -- reducing waste and saving money. Interviews with experts such as chef Alice Waters and food psychologist Brian Wansink, among others, uncover not only how and why we waste, but, most importantly, what we can do about it.Jonathan Bloom is a journalist whose work has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, and Boston Globe. American Wasteland Jonathan Bloom, Author, American Wasteland Michael Dimock, President, Roots of Change A.G. Kawamura, Former Secretary, California Department of Food and Agriculture Greg Dalton, Founder of Climate One, moderator The ubiquity of food in the United States blinds the mind to a tragic fact: much of it is wasted. Exact numbers are elusive, but estimates suggest that at least a quarter and as much as half of the food produced in this country is never consumed. A panel of food experts convened by Climate One says that much of the waste is unnecessary. Lest consumers think most of the waste ends up in supermarket or restaurant trash bins, Jonathan Bloom, author, American Wasteland, cites a study from New York State, which found that households account for 40% of wasted food. “In terms of the American consumer’s psyche, we’ve gotten to this point where we see beautiful food everywhere – the rise of food TV and glossy magazines – everywhere we turn, it seems, we’re constantly seeing images of food that looks pretty. Appearance trumps taste,” he says. “We have tremendous inefficiencies on both sides, pre-harvest and post harvest,” says A.G. Kawamura, former Secretary, California Department of Food and Agriculture. If prices collapse, he says, a farmer might not be able to afford to pay for the fuel and labor needed to harvest a crop. Fortunately, he says, groups such Farm to Table are partnering with farmers to offset the cost of a second or third harvest to prevent food from wasting in the field. For Michael Dimock, President, Roots of Change, the primary driver of waste in the food system is how we think. “It’s really changing our consciousness about what is waste and what is not. That’s the first step in combating this problem,” he says. There are reasons to be optimistic that the system is evolving, he says, citing the food separation and composting efforts underway in San Francisco and Sonoma County. Also encouraging, he says, is the increased interest in “food sovereignty.” Everything from families and communities planting and tending gardens to consumers “mining” trash bins at supermarkets and restaurants for green waste to feed to backyard chickens. “I’m thankful that we have a system of abundance,” says A.G. Kawamura. “Can we make it a system of efficiency? We’re lucky we don’t have a system of scarcity.” This program was recorded in front of a live audience at The Commonwealth Club of California on March 2, 2011
