Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 30, 2024 is: tribulation trib-yuh-LAY-shun noun Tribulation, which is often used in the phrase "trials and tribulations," refers to an experience that causes suffering. It can also mean "unhappiness, pain, or suffering." // The new graduate knew that the journey to becoming a successful entrepreneur would come with some trials and tribulations. See the entry > Examples: "[Chennedy] Carter doesn't shy away from the tribulations of her early years in the WNBA. She has spoken at length this season about how her year away from the WNBA allowed her to grow on and off the court. Still, there's a competitive edge to Carter that won't ever be tamed." — Annie Costabile, The Chicago Sun-Times, 6 Aug. 2024 Did you know? It would be an understatement to say that undergoing trials and tribulations is a drag, but the origins of the word tribulation have much to do with literal dragging. Tribulation comes (via Anglo-French) from the Latin noun tribulum, which refers to an ancient tool that separates grain seed from the rest of the plant when it is dragged over a harvest. If one imagines such a thresher working on a human being—a harrowing thought, indeed—the connection to tribulation's present meaning is understandable. These days, tribulation is commonly used as a plural noun and paired with trials to refer to any kind of drawn-out struggle, though lovers of John Milton's famous 17th century epic poem Paradise Lost may recognize it, unpaired, from a passage describing life as "Tri'd in sharp tribulation, and refin'd / By Faith and faithful works."
The WNBA broke its own records across all categories this year: ticket sales, attendance, viewership — even players' stat lines were blowing up. And Chicago's team did not miss out on the action, having its own moment in the spotlight before falling to injuries (and more mature teams) mid-season and failing to make the playoffs. But the Sky's future looks bright. Reset sat down with Annie Costabile, Chicago Sky reporter for the Sun-Times, Maya Goldberg-Safir, who wrote about the Sky for South Side Weekly this season and Quita from the Quita Loves Sports channel on YouTube. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 12, 2023 is: divulge dih-VULJ verb To divulge something, especially secret or private information, is to make it known. // Rather than divulge our list of potential names to friends and family before our baby's due date, we prefer our eventual choice to be a surprise. See the entry > Examples: “As an unrestricted free agent, [Azurá] Stevens can negotiate with any team when free agency begins in mid-January. She isn't ready to divulge what her expectations are for her future in the [WNBA] league, but she did say she will be testing the waters.” — Annie Costabile, The Chicago Sun-Times, 10 Dec. 2022 Did you know? Information divulged is typically secret, or known only to insiders, and it isn't usually shouted from the rooftops. But when divulge first entered English in the 15th century, it did so as a synonym of proclaim: divulging involved declaring or announcing something to the public, a duty of town criers from Lizard Point to Dunnet Head. The word's source is Latin vulgare, “to make known,” which traces ultimately back to the Latin noun vulgus, meaning “common people” or “mob.” While nowadays divulge can presumably involve blabbing to the rabble, the word usually implies a more careful and considered approach to sharing sensitive information.

If you're not following our professional women's sports teams here in Chicago, we feel a little sorry for you. The Sky are ranked No. 1 in the WNBA and have won nine of their last ten games. And the Red Stars just came off a nine-match unbeaten streak and are third in the NWSL. Remember, both teams played for their respective championships last season with the Sky bringing home the team's first ever WNBA title. Now, both are on track for another deep playoff run. Each team has battled hurdles off the field, including fighting for equal pay as the men's teams and leadership changes after accusations of abuse and harassment. And women players continue to speak out against social injustice. Today, Chicago Sun-Times reporter Annie Costabile takes us inside this season of the Sky, and Wednesday Claire Watkins from CHGO and Just Women Sports talks Red Stars.
