In this episode of the Afrocentric Social Worker Podcast we interviewed Kentucky State Rep. Attica Scott. | Black Social Work Podcast Two years ago, Breonna Taylor's death was the result of a no-knock warrant served at her apartment on March 13, 2020, as part of a narcotics investigation. When officers arrived at her residence, they were shot at by her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who believed a break-in was happening. When officers returned fire, she was shot eight times. After Breonna's death, her family and other activists campaigned to ban no-knock warrants in Louisville. The city officially passed “Breonna's Law,” which banned the use of those warrants. Some other police departments and cities have also started to move away from no-knock warrants. As of February 2022, there are 27 states with some kind of restriction on the use of no-knock warrants and 22 cities that have restrictions as well. A total of four states—Oregon, Connecticut, Virginia and Florida—have outright banned the use of no-knock warrants. Many of these bans and restrictions came after Taylor's death.

What does independence mean for the rest of us? Women have long asked this question—as have groups that have felt or experienced being shut out, excluded, colonized or enslaved. On July 5, 1852—a time in which the U.S. reaped benefit from the enslavement of kidnapped and trafficked Black people from the shores of Africa—Frederick Douglass put it this way: “What to the slave is the Fourth of July?” That was long ago, before the Emancipation Proclamation, Civil War and ratification of the 13th Amendment. However, the question—what does it mean to be free, equal and a citizen?—remains a vital point of discussion not only in the United States, but around the world. We dive into freedom, the 4th of July, and what it means to be represented in this episode.  What does liberty mean to and for you, your family, your communities?  To answer that, we are talking to folks making a difference at the local level:  Colorado state Rep. Leslie Herod was elected in 2016 as the first LGBTQ African American in the General Assembly, after receiving the highest number of votes of any candidate running in a contested election. She serves as the chair of the House Finance Committee, vice chair of the House Judiciary Committee, and chair of the Committee on Legal Services. Herod also chairs the Colorado Black Democratic Legislative Caucus and the Arts Caucus. Since her election in 2016, Herod has sent 68 bills to the governor's desk, marshaling through numerous pieces of legislation addressing criminal justice reform, mental health and substance abuse, renewable energy, youth homelessness, and civil rights protections. Kentucky state Rep. Attica Scott serves in the Kentucky legislature, representing House District 41. In 2016, Scott defeated a 34-year incumbent to become the first Black woman in nearly 20 years to serve in the state legislature. She serves on critical committees, including Education; Local Government; Elections; Constitutional Amendments; and others. Before becoming a state rep, she served as an English immersion teacher in China, as well as an adjunct faculty member at both Bellarmine University and Jefferson Community and Technical College.Heather Lende, a former elected local official and member of the Haines, Alaska Borough Assembly, was one of the thousands of women inspired to take a more active role in politics during the Trump presidency. Lende is also New York Times bestselling author; a contributor to NPR, the New York Times, and National Geographic Traveler, among other newspapers and magazines; and a former contributing editor at Woman's Day. A columnist for the Alaska Dispatch News, she is the obituary writer for the Chilkat Valley News in Haines and the recipient of the Suzan Nightingale McKay Best Columnist Award from the Alaska Press Club. Recently, Lende was named the Alaska State Writer Laureate for 2021-2023. One such development, which has received virtually no media coverage at all here in Australia, is the extraordinary wave of teachers' strikes that has swept the nation, starting in West Virginia in February, and then quickly spreading to Kentucky, Arizona, Oklahoma, North Carolina and as far afield as New Jersey. Alex Whisson spoke to Attica Scott, representative of the 41st district in the Kentucky state house, and herself a former union organiser. Three years ago this week, a Florida jury found George Zimmerman not guilty of the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Like many people across the country, we were stunned, and saddened at the loss of life and lack of justice. We asked Lucie Brooks to join us in the studio that week, and help us analyze the cases presented by both the prosecution and defense, and what may have lead to the not-guilty verdict. Lucie taught us about jury demographics and how they affect trial outcomes (Zimmerman's just was made up of five white women and one Puerto Rican woman). And we also talked about something more personal: Lucie's experiences as the white mom of four black sons. Just over a year later, a police officer shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown, in Ferguson, Missouri. Protests sprung up in the neighborhood, and the police responded with curfews and riot squads. International media descended on the St. Louis suburb. We thought surely things would change. Police departments would implement extra training about de-escalation, internal biases, and use of force. All the attention on Ferguson would bring change. The Black Lives Matter movement, formed in the wake of the Zimmerman verdict, was galvanized. At that time, we spoke to now-Representative-elect Attica Scott, about the interplay between police departments, local governments, and their communities. Like Lucie, she spoke about raising black sons. Now, three years later, Philando Castille and Alton Sterling were both shot by police, in different cities, just days apart. They became the latest in what seems like an unending cycle of shootings, administrative leave, hashtags, protests, and acquittals. We're listening back to parts of our conversations with Attica and Lucie this week, since they are, sadly, still just as relevant here in the summer of 2016. In our Juicy Fruit segment this week, we talk about a Yale employee who pulled a Bree Newsom in the Calhoun College dining hall, where he worked. Corey Menafee smashed a stained glass window that depicted enslaved people picking cotton. He was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor for reckless endangerment in the second degree and a felony for criminal mischief in the first degree. Yale has asked the state's attorney in Connecticut to drop the charges, and Menafee has since resigned. And on a brighter note, the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors returned this week after a six-year hiatus, with a special show honoring the genre's female pioneers. We talk about the performances we loved, and women's importance in hip-hip history.
