Nick is joined by John Granger and special guest star Guido in their temporary headquarters as they await the move to Granger Towers. We discuss the revelation that J. K. Rowling has an inherited blood clotting disorder, and speculate that this could be von Willebrand Disease, and discuss what this could mean for a Golden Thread that John first explored more than five years ago. Nick surveys the instances of blood in all her published work, and John identifies a theme that Nick has missed - the Eucharist. Could this be the key to understanding the final narrative arch of the Strike series?Links Discussed in this Episode:The revelation of J. K. Where there was bloodshed, there was always alcohol.Strike remembered the wide patch of blood on the sheets, the excoriated skin on her wrist where Rhona had tried to free herself.Nevertheless, those long hours of driving through the darkness when he had known an encounter with the police might be fatal, when he had feared a request to turn out his pockets or a shrewd-eyed passenger noticing dried blood on him had taught him a powerful lesson. He was wearing a yellow T-shirt and on his right forearm was the rose tattoo, which had undergone a modification: a dagger now ran through it, and drops of blood fell out of the flower towards the wrist. If they'd been five minutes later she'd've been a goner. Edie fort it was corny, 'avin' a vampire, but I drew 'im so she could see what I was finking. I wanted 'im to be inept, like, tryna kill tourists but never gettin' enough blood to live on, so 'e was, like, weak an' feeble…'‘Julius Evola. Far-right philosopher. Ludicrous racial theories. A rather determinedly eccentric classmate of mine at Radley was partial to him. Used to carry The Myth of the Blood around and read it ostentatiously at meal times. It was impossible to know whether Ross had turned pale, because the man had always looked as though antifreeze ran in his veins rather than blood, but he'd certainly become unnaturally still.Robin stamped hard on his bare foot before both slipped in another puddle of Inigo's blood. As the door shuddered, Robin saw, by the dim glow from a skylight, Katya slumped on the floor beside the bath, blood all over the hands she was pressing against her stomach. The Running GraveThe word “Blood” appears 194 times. It's important to say that my mother – I was raised to call her Louise, because the UHC forbids naming blood relationships – isn't stupid. It'll have been used for chopping wood, but Oisin was convinced it had blood on it. We couldn't get it out, though. We couldn't reach.I don't know what's normal for a birth but she seemed to lose a huge amount of blood. I was present when the baby was actually born because one of the birthing team couldn't cope any more and I volunteered to take her place.Strike's imagination insisted on showing him a vivid picture of Charlotte submerged in her own blood, her black hair floating on the clotted surface. There was a puddle of blood seeping from under one of the toilet cubicle doors. She could see Lin's bloodstained legs, which weren't moving. They committed nine murders in all, one of them of a pregnant actress, and those young women were right in the thick of the action, ignoring the victims' pleas for mercy, dipping their fingers in the victims' blood to scrawl – Jesus,' said Strike, with a startled laugh, as he remembered a detail he'd forgotten, ‘they wrote “pigs” on the wall as well. In blood.'The Hallmarked ManThe word “Blood” appears 246 times. Some might have considered her flat tone insensitive, given Charlotte's recent death in a blood-filled bathtub, but as Strike was more than happy to dispense with prurient questions or faux sympathyThe body was blood group A positive – that's the same.‘The splash patterns from the blood were un-fakeable, according to forensics. There was also a partial footprint that had clearly been made while the blood was still liquid.'The back wall broke the monotony of the sea of silver, because it displayed many antique aprons and sashes embroidered in gold, and Robin's eye lingered on an apron embroidered with a bloody severed head, held up by a single hand.‘Yeah, somefing like… an' 'e dropped 'is doob tube, remember, Daz? An' 'e told you it was a f****n' blood sample, like you was gonna nick it off 'im.'Previously a Conservative MP, he now headed various charitable and political organisations and committees, was ever-ready with a quote for the papers, sprinkled his conversation with Latin tags and capitalised to the full on the English public's weakness for a toff who seemed ready to laugh at himself, having a fondness for appearing on political quiz shows, where he played to the hilt the part of genial, bumbling blue-blood.Blood must've started pooling in the lower part of the body before they started to mutilate it. Maybe that was deliberate. Maybe they didn't want blood seeping out under the vault door.'As Strike watched, life and blood started to drain from the brindle, its legs twitching ever more feebly as blood flooded from its jugular.Robin took the turn into the road at speed, then looked sideways at Strike, one of whose hands was pressed to his inner thigh, blood seeping through his fingers. The bodies of Jim Todd and a woman Strike assumed to be his mother, Nancy, were lying on the dirty carpet in a foul miasma encouraged by the gas fire that continued to blaze. Todd, who was fully dressed, had been stabbed multiple times. His now black blood had soaked his shirt and the floor beneath himBlood now gushing from his head wound, Strike succeeded in grabbing the wrist of Griffiths' knife-holding hand, then slammed it down on the rough concrete floor,He could feel a weird coldness, as though flesh that had never been exposed to fresh air was meeting it for the first time, and this contrasted unpleasantly with the continuing flow of warm blood.Possibly combining heavy blood loss and neat whisky hadn't been the very best idea, Strike was prepared to concede that now, but he had to keep talking, because he wanted the man to know he knew. The IckabogThe word “Blood” appears 11 times.‘If Beamish was half-eaten, why wasn't there more blood?' asked the second.soldiers who'd been sent back to the marsh to find out what happened to Private Nobby Buttons had discovered nothing but his bloodstained shoes, a single horseshoe, and a few well-gnawed bones. Finally, the same man cut off the head of one of the hens and made sure plenty of blood and feathers was spread around, before breaking down the side of the coop to allow the rest of the chickens to escape. In hundreds, Ickabogs were slain, Our blood poured on the land like rain, Our ancestors like trees were felled And still men came to fight us.The Christmas PigThe word “Blood” appears 2 times. They all seemed to be bits of humans. Siri Undlin, better known as Humbird, is a talented singer-songwriter from the Twin Cities with deep roots in Minnesota music and the land that surrounds her. Growing up, she was a true cold weather kid who loved hockey during winter In Minnesota, but also loved music and feeding her vivid imagination. Her love of music was nurtured by her parents, religious music, church choir and also her Aunt Joan, who taught Siri guitar at age 12. Hockey actually led her to her first band Celtic Club, with a set of triplets. The band would play at Irish Pubs, talent shows and, of course, at the local hockey rink. The band introduced her to Celtic music and her first live performances.Undlin shares her rich experience studying folklore and fairy tales, which greatly influenced her musical journey. She discusses her intensive research in Ireland and Nordic countries, exploring how music intertwines with storytelling traditions. Throughout the episode, Undlin reflects on her upbringing, her time at an art school, and her evolving approach to songwriting, blending traditional folk music with indie music and experimental sounds. On her new album, Right On, Siri is acknowledging and addressing white supremacy in Middle America, as highlighted in her song "Child of Violence." She talks candidly about what writing and releasing the song taught her about white supremacy. Touring has provided Siri with unexpected challenges and valuable insights, shaping her perspective as a musician and performer. We talk about the importance of being open to chaos and disciplined in one's mindset while navigating the music industry and life on the road.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? Let's just say it: “The Talented Mr. Ripley” is a gay 90's classic with an ensemble of stars. Matt Damon is admittedly great as Tom, and Gwyneth Paltrow is just lovely as Marge, but the supporting cast truly shines. Oscar nominated Jude Law as bathing beauty Dickie, Queen Philip Seymour Hoffman as terminal main character Freddie, a smashing Jack Davenport as Peter and of course, a pre-Tár Cate Blanchett as Best Supporting Meredith. Plus: Patron Saint of the Pod Celia Weston as Aunt Joan at the opera! Was 1999 a cultural apex? We have no idea, but this cast is a reason to say yes. Marylanders are fortunate that Dennis performs extensively in the region, both solo and as a member of several bands, including Atomic Light Orchestra, The 1974, and Starbelly.  This is Dennis Schocket's story and we're excited to share it on Mainstreet.  Find out more about Dennis's music, bands, and tour scheduleWebsite: https://www.mdparty.com/performers/default?id=8717Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dennis.schocketYouTube: You can find many videos. On the wake of the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict, in this special episode, Rick and Andy sit down with Rick's Aunt Joan and Uncle AJ to discuss their interracial marriage, biracial children and the effects of racism on their household. During the interview Rick speaks about the reality of having racist tendencies within him and his longing to overcome those natural responses. Together, they delve into when slavery began in America, its eventual elimination at the end of the Civil War, a new type of slavery through the criminalization of displaced black slaves in the new society, Jim Crow laws, the Nixon and Reagan era's "War on Drugs" and the mass incarcerations of black Americans. Through this sad history of abuse on the black race and the effect of racism permeating the culture, the group tackle the subject with the effort of finding a real solution. We appreciate all of our listeners! Please share this podcast and tell others about the Burros of Berea! Much Love!

Antonio Michael Downing was raised by his indomitable grandmother in the lush rainforest of southern Trinidad, but—at age 11—is uprooted to Canada when she dies. He is sent to live with his stern, evangelical Aunt Joan in Wabigoon, a tiny northern Ontario community where he is one of only a few Black children in the town. His memoir, Saga Boy, is a creative, startling mash-up of memories and mythology as he shares the experience of growing up as an immigrant minority and longing for home. Eventually, he becomes a “Saga Boy”: a Trinidadian playboy, addicted to escapism, attention, and sex. When the inevitable crash happens, he finds himself in a cold, stone jail cell. Yet this is a story of pride and reclamation, as Downing reclaims his Black identity and embraces a rich heritage. He speaks with independent curator and producer Barbara Chirinos about his unforgettable story.

Known as Aunt Joan, or JB, to her PHILADANCO! family, she's a powerhouse of artistic energy and warmth, and a passionate advocate for Black dancers. As she will tell you, she's nearly 90 years old and has seen a lot.  No pandemic can dampen this woman's spirits or her determination to create opportunities for her dancers to shine. She grew up loving to dance, studying ballet, but finding work in the night club circuit—dancing, choreographing and performing with big name entertainers, including Sammy Davis, Jr, Cab Calloway, and Pearl Bailey.  In this episode she talks about why it's important for her to provide opportunities for young black dancers today.

This week we began our new journey. In this episode of The Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I have another chat with my beautiful wife, Sandy about the first few days of our new journey. Leading up to our departure, it was a crazy, sometimes frustrating two weeks from our original settlement date on our house.  Again, trusting the Lord's timing isn't always easy for me.  However, during the extra 10 days that we had in Berks County from our original plan, we were able to spend some extra time with some of our family members. Another Friday breakfast with my dad, an in person visit with Sandy's mom, spending a few hours with my Aunt Joan on her 83rd birthday, and time with our kids and grand-kids was precious indeed. We spent Monday at another daughter's house in Perry County and early Tuesday morning we embarked on our first journey. We're a few days in.  On Tuesday, we went down Skyline Drive and 60 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway into Lynchburg, VA, where we stayed in our first campground.  Day two took us to dinner at Mabry Mill and a night at Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground.  We'll travel the entire Blue Ridge Parkway from top to bottom on this first leg, taking our time and enjoying the journey.  The destination is now secondary. It was bittersweet to leave Berks County, but we're excited to see what the Lord has in store for us on this new adventure. Below is poem that I came across when I was 17 years old.  I found it along with some other stuff that I was cleaning out when we were emptying the house.  I did not write this, I do not know who did for sure, but I do find it fitting for this moment. Peace.   Good-Bye Sometimes it seems I just get to say helloWhen suddenly I find myself saying goodbyeMaybe that's why we should live each day as our lastFor today we live, but tomorrow we may die I hope I brought some smilesTo brighten people's dayAnd if I didn't offend my GodHe'll now clearly point the way We may forget each other's nameAs tide and time roll onFor tomorrow is upon usAnd yesterdays are gone If we never meet againThis is one thing I'd like to sayI'm very glad I met youAnd so glad you passed my way.

What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

Have you ever felt coerced into parenting in a way you usually wouldn’t because you were in public? Does the tsk-ing disapproval of Aunt Joan feel even worse than eyerolls from strangers? Do you discipline your kids differently in front of friends who might hold a tighter line, even if it's in your house? Do you ever give a "now you listen to me, young man" lecture to one of your kids primarily for the benefit of his or her siblings? For better and for worse, parenting with an audience means doing things differently.  In this episode we discuss what to say to well-meaning (but still interfering) onlookers with front-row seats to your kid's tantrum without making What That Lady Must Think your primary focus. As parenting columnist Sarah Coyne reminds us, we should focus on strengthening our connections with our kids rather than pleasing the onlookers. Kids need consistent, reliable, trustworthy parents who don’t change their game plan based upon who’s acting as witness." Across more than 50 years of essays, novels, screenplays, and criticism, Joan Didion has been our premier chronicler of the ebb and flow of America’s cultural and political tides with observations on her personal – and our own – upheavals, downturns, life changes, and states of mind. In the intimate, extraordinary documentary JOAN DIDION: THE CENTER WILL NOT HOLD, actor and director Griffin Dunne unearths a treasure trove of archival footage and talks at length to his “Aunt Joan” about the eras she covered and the eventful life she’s lived, including partying with Janis Joplin in a house full of L.A. rockers; hanging in a recording studio with Jim Morrison; and cooking dinner for one of Charles Manson’s women for a magazine story. Didion guides us through the sleek literati scene of New York in the 1950s and early ’60s, when she wrote for Vogue; her return to her home state of California for two turbulent decades; the writing of her seminal books, including Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Play It as It Lays, A Book of Common Prayer, and The White Album; her film scripts, including The Panic in Needle Park; her view of 1980s and ’90s political personalities; and the meeting of minds that was her long marriage to writer John Gregory Dunne. She reflects on writing about her reckoning with grief after Dunne’s death, in The Year of Magical Thinking (winner of the National Book Award for Nonfiction), and the death of their daughter Quintana Roo, in Blue Nights. With commentary from friends and collaborators including Vanessa Redgrave, Harrison Ford, Anna Wintour, David Hare, Calvin Trillin, Hilton Als, and Susanna Moore, the most crucial voice belongs to Didion, one of the most influential American writers alive today. Director Griffin Dunne (American Werewolf in London, After Hours) joins us for a conversation on "Aunt Joan" and her fiercely personal body of remarkable body of fiction and non-fiction.
