At many nonprofits, corporate partnerships and peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising programs live on separate teams with different goals and often competing priorities. But there's a clear connection between the two. Not only can a peer-to-peer fundraising program serve as an entry point for a new corporate partner, but it can also be a great way to deepen relationships with existing corporate partners through employee engagement. Similarly, adding a cause marketing campaign or other social impact initiative can amplify a P2P sponsor's impact. At their core, corporate social impact campaigns and P2P programs empower champions to ask for donations, volunteer and build awareness on behalf of the nonprofit. Plus, when you leverage the two initiatives in tandem, a true win-win-win partnership can be created for all involved. In this episode, EFG's Alli Murphy and the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum's Marcie Maxwell are joined by Robyn Raphael, Director of Corporate Partnerships for St. Baldrick's Foundation and Amanda Palm, Director of Communications & Partnerships at Sport Clips. The trio discusses how St. Baldrick's signature P2P head-shaving events led to a natural partnership between the childhood cancer charity and the sports-themed hair care franchise and its stylists. In today's episode, we'll explore:How peer-to-peer fundraising can serve as a platform for employee engagementWhat it takes to create & sustain a mutually beneficial partnershipThe importance of listening and trust in a nonprofit-corporate partnershipHow Robyn and Amanda built a strong relationship and how they work together to grow their organizationsElevate Your Social ImpactCheck out our annual conference!Sign up for Engage for Good's newsletterCheck out past podcast episodesAccess free resourcesCheck out our monthly webinarsLet Alli know what you think of the show! Hi Friends,Happy Thanksgiving! For this special episode we are focusing on gratitude, giving back, and using your superpowers to make a difference.Joining me is my friend, Tim Kenny, founder of The St. Baldrick's Foundation-an organization that is near and dear to my heart. If you have been around our show for more than a hot minute, you have probably heard me talk about the work we do to raise awareness and funding for pediatric cancer research. My IRL community has been impacted by the loss of several kids to various types of cancers-and having a front row seat to how it impacts a family alters the way in which you see the world. At the time of this recording, The St. Baldrick's Foundation has donated over 465 million dollars to pediatric cancer research, making them the leading non-profit organization dedicated to pediatric cancer research. They are “the behind the scenes” heroes responsible for funding grants to researchers in institutions including St. Jude's, Dana Farber, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (to name a few).I invited Tim on the show to share his personal story of growing up on a farm in Ireland, the oldest of 6 kids, coming to the US with $200 in his pocket, and building a life here (the true American Dream).During our conversation, Tim shares: The origin story of St. Baldrick's, and how a brainstorm with some buddies over a couple of beers changed his lifeHow St. Baldrick's got its name (spoiler alert: it's not a real saint!)Stories about how kids and adults of all ages have been impacted by the work they do.In a season where many of us are stressed and overwhelmed, this episode focuses on hitting pause on your to-do list and pressing play on how small gestures can make a difference in someone's life. After listening to this episode, my hope is that you feel inspired to share it with your friends, show gratitude for the people in your life who matter, and continue using your superpowers to make the world a better place.I am grateful for all of you.XOXO-LaurieP.S. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and many organizations are raising money for research and patient support. Last week, we learned the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which functions to support the attrition of patients with reduction of the disease.  Dr. Charles Hemenway from the LCMC Children's Hospital joins us today for more on the field of pediatric oncology and the fight to end childhood cancer.  Between jazz halls, dance clubs, and even popular street corners, New Orleans has no shortage of offerings when it comes to vibrant nightlife. But NOLA after hours isn't just fun, it's also economically advantageous. And now, a new position from the mayor's office is singularly focused on the aspects of the Crescent City that come to life after dark.  Howie Kaplan is the owner of The Howlin Wolf, manager of the Rebirth Brass Band, and now the first director of the New Orleans Office of Nighttime Economy. He joins us for more on his new role as “Night Mayor.” Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karl Lengel. Louisiana is considering overhauling its electric market. This would divide up the monopolies that have controlled power generation and distribution for decades and open up the market to competition. The Advocate's Sam Karlin tells us how this possibility has caused a stir at petrochemical plants and the utility companies Cleco and Entergy.  September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the St. Baldrick's Foundation is raising money for pediatric oncology grants through a unique approach – haircuts. Drew Morock, an organizer with St. Baldrick's, tells us about an upcoming bar event where volunteers can donate their hair to cancer patients while raising money for the organization. New Orleans writer and commentator Ronnie Virgets was a local favorite. He passed away in 2019, but left us with a trove of meandering remembrances that cover a wide berth. Today we re-air one a piece on one of our favorite topics: radio.  Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karl Lengel. The St. Baldrick's Foundation, the largest charitable funder of childhood cancer research grants, and the American Cancer Society, a health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer, formed a partnership in 2019 to fund grants that will accelerate childhood cancer research with the goals of understanding and discovering new treatment options and improving care and survival in children with cancer. Kathleen Ruddy, St. Baldrick's Foundation CEO, joined the podcast to talk through the goals of this unique partnership. “Why do some patients respond better than others to a particular treatment? Why does one treatment cause more late effects than another? What else can we learn to speed up progress, to cure more children, more effectively, and less harshly?” Then two of the grantees who have been funded through the partnership talked about what they hope to accomplish. Yael P. Mossé, MD, is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Neuroblastoma Developmental Therapeutics Program, as well as a pediatric oncologist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Mossé's grant is focused on improving patient outcomes for ALK mutant neuroblastoma through precision molecular targeting. E. Anders Kolb, MD, is Vice Chairman for Research and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, as well as Director of the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Dr. Kolb's study aims to validate the detection of novel biomarkers for the Pediatric Acute Leukemia (PedAL) Initiative Sub-trials. 0:00 – Kathleen Ruddy, CEO of St. Baldrick's Foundation 10:25 – Yael P. Mossé, MD, and E. Anders Kolb, MD 11:29 – Drs. Mossé and Kolb on why, “in pediatric cancer care, clinical trial participation is the standard of care” 13:31 – Dr. Mossé on how her team is “bringing the science to the patient” to learn how children with neuroblastoma respond (or don't respond) to treatments 15:57 – Dr. Kolb on why it's so important, and challenging, to bring precision medicine approaches to childhood cancer treatment 18:37 –Dr. Mossé explains the goal “to bring the science to the clinical trials in real time and not for there to be a lag” 21:38 – Dr. Kolb highlights how revolutionary it is for Dr. Mossé to change a clinical trial based on data emerging in the lab 23:26 – Dr. Kolb explains how “the AML that kids get is nothing like the AML that older adults get” and why this matters for drug development 27:43 – “We as pediatricians are taught early on,” notes Dr. Mossé, “that kids are not small adults, and it really is the same for pediatric cancer.” 30:17 – Dr. Kolb on the inspiration he drew from an initiative by St. Baldrick's Foundation called Project:EveryChild, and describes his new study: “what we hope is that we will be as successful in relapse as we have been in newly diagnosed AML” 32:25 – Dr. Mossé on the value of collecting tissue over time, including at relapse, and how a major part of her new study is using liquid biopsies to collect samples in a less invasive way 34:43 – Dr. Kolb on the impact of this funding: “If we're successful, we're going to be able to rapidly screen for relevant biomarkers and we're going to be able to enroll kids in the therapy that has the highest potential to provide benefit.” 37:46 – Dr. Mossé describes how this funding will support her research: “My hope and my expectation is to make a really big difference for a small subset of patients. I think that's where cancer biology has turned now—one disease is not defined by its histology; it's defined by its underlying molecular biology.” 40:29 – A message they'd like to share with children going through cancer treatment and with their parents and families

My interview with Kathleen Ruddy, Chief Executive Officer of St. Baldrick's is special because she represents an organization that I truly love and have been raising money since 2009. The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with the aim of raising funds to help find cures for children with cancer. The name of the foundation is not associated with a recognized Saint of the Catholic Church but is founded on wordplay and appropriation of the title of sainthood. Volunteers sponsored by family, friends, and employers shave their heads or "chop" their ponytails in solidarity with children who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment in order to raise funds. Clutter takes up space. Whether it is physical, emotional, or mental, clutter takes away the time and place that we would rather have to be more productive. Laurie Palau, the author of the book, Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized, sets us up for a more organized life as she motivates us to become more organized through her advice and tips. As a mother herself raising teenagers who also juggles being the host of the weekly podcast, This Organized Life, and the Founder of Simply B Organized, Laurie is very familiar with the struggles women have of trying to integrate multiple roles in their lives. She shares her own way of achieving work-life integration and keeping her time organized in the midst of it all. On the parenting side, Laurie lets us in on how she makes her kids stay organized – from parental controls to keeping their stuff. — Listen to the podcast here: A Mom's Practical Guide To Getting Organized with Laurie Palau I am going to be bringing you a very special guest, my organizing friend, Laurie Palau. She is going to come on and we're going to talk about everything from organization to raising teenagers. Welcome to the show, Laurie. Thank you so much for having me. Laurie is the author of the book, Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized. She also is the host of the weekly podcast called This Organized Life. She's the Founder of Simply B Organized where she speaks, teaches, and works one-on-one with clients to help them reduce clutter and increased productivity. Laurie's advice has been featured in the New York Times Parenting Section, Family Circle, Home & Table Magazine. She can also be seen sharing tips on 6ABC and WFMZ in addition to other radio and podcast interviews. When she's not organizing the world, Laurie can be found at home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with her husband, Josh, same as mine, two girls, two dogs. She loves coffee and Tito's Vodka. In her spare time, she is actively involved in St. Baldrick's Foundation, which raises funding for pediatric cancer research. We already knew that we had a lot in common, Laurie. I did not know that you have a husband named Josh like me and loved Tito's like me. Those are two things we did not discuss. I don't know which was the bigger shame. I think it's probably the Tito's. We met through another organizer, Jen Kilbourne I think the first time we talked on the phone and it's just one of those things when you meet somebody and you're like, “Where have you been my whole life?” I want to talk about your book. I want to talk about organizing. I love having other organizers on the show because although we are very similar, hopefully there's another spin on something that the audience can know from you. I think you've been doing organizing for several years. As my day job, I'd be doing it for several years but like so many other people, it's something that you've been doing for a lot longer. I've had Simply B Organized. I started the end of 2008 and made it official. In 2009, a totally different landscape of the industry but I love it. Love the show?
