The debate about the transfer of change of direction and agility training is a bit like the debate about general and specific training. Specificity is a critical factor, but not all general training is the same. And specific training can also be counterproductive if you don't understand what you're training for. On this weeks GAINcast, Bill Knowles joins us to discuss how he sees the spectrum of agility training and how a purposeful approach can improve performance all along the spectrum. LTAD has almost become a cliché. Everyone has an LTAD program and they all look the same. How can that be? Because the models assume a linear march to the top of the athletic achievement pyramid. In reality it is a very chaotic process at best, full of detours, false starts and redirection. On this week's episode we look at rethinking long-term athlete development with some practical examples from yesteryear and the present. The new research on injury prevention discussed in this episode was summarized by Craig Pickering in our most recent Sports Science Monthly. HRV and data was another topics discussed on this episode, and we looked at it in more detail on GAINcast 221 with Dr. Michael Joyner.

Healing an injury is only one step in the complex process to return an injured athlete to the field. Being on the sidelines can have a large impact on the physical and psychological condition of an athlete, which also needs to be addressed in the return to play process. In other words, we need to recondition the athlete. Physiotherapist, athletic development coach, and footballer Leigh Egger joins this week's podcast to talk about the process of reconditioning and helping injured athletes.
