Down With Boring brings the seaside shenanigans of Rockaway Beach to your ears, as our intrepid hosts Jake and Jamie deliver a festival special recorded live from the glamorous Butlin's Bognor Regis that proves January doesn't have to be all dry veganuary pledges and forgotten gym memberships. Special guests include Isle of Wight's newest noise-makers The Pill, who've been turning heads since first appearing with a bang last year. The punk duo's singles ‘Bale of Hay' and ‘Scaffolding Man' have been building ‘quite the foundation' for future chaos – and yes, we're quite proud of that pun, thanks for asking. With a stint on the Dork Hype List Tour 2025 to come very-soon-indeed, they're our kind of band. They're joined by Brighton's own, Dork faves Lime Garden, whose debut album ‘One More Thing' landed last February to understandable acclaim – unexpected, brilliant, and impossible to ignore.

This episode we are thrilled to be joined by the artist P Staff.  Born in Bognor Regis in the UK and now living and working between Los Angeles and London, P's work draws from a wide-ranging assortment of inspirations, materials, and settings to emphasize the processes by which bodies – especially those of people who are queer, trans, or disabled – are controlled by society.  P works across multiple media, including installation, film, and poetry. In their 2019 installation On Venus at the Serpentine Gallery in London, P used mirrored floors, yellow lights, and warped footage to explore the exchange between bodies, ecosystems, and institutions from a queer and trans perspective. P went on to present a version of this work at the Venice Biennale last year. And in their exhibition this summer at the Kunsthalle Basel titled In Ecstasy (or alternatively In Ekstase), P used materials including electric nets, architectural interventions, and holograms to consider how bodies are disciplined in a society defined by capitalism and its brutality.  Among a host of venues worldwide, P has had solo exhibitions at institutions including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Chisenhale Gallery, London (which is actually run by Zoe Whitley, a guest from Season 1 of Art from the Outside). Sky News and Global Fishing Watch have discovered many of the UK's marine conservation zones and marine protected areas are often protected in name only. Since January 2022, tens of thousands of hours of damaging fishing practices like dredging and bottom trawling have taken place in the so-called protected zones.Although damaging to our ocean's havens, the practices aren't illegal. So how can we allow commercial fishing to continue while allowing our seabeds to recover and thrive? On this week's ClimateCast, Tom Heap is in Bognor Regis to speak to fourth-generation fisherman, Clive Mills, who has returned to his fishing boat after being pushed out because of a lack of supply. Twenty years on, he's pledged to only fish sustainably and is encouraging others to do the same.Plus, we look at the state of fishing in our waters internationally with Jack Clarke from the Marine Conservation Society.Podcast producer: Emma Rae Woodhouse Climate producer: Mickey Carroll Editors: Paul Stanworth and Wendy

In this episode Andrew Ferris (guitar/vocals)and Jamie Burchell (bass) join me to discuss how Jetplane Landing was formed after their previous band Cuckoo disbanded in the late-90s. Zero For Conduct, the band's debut album, was recorded in Jamie's homestudio in Bognor Regis and released on the band's own Smalltown America label in 2001. Jetplane Landing would release three more albums before calling it a day in 2014. Andrew and Jamie were joined in Jetplane by Jamie's brother Raife on drums and later Cahir O'Doherty joined on second guitar. Maybe soured by their experience on a major label in Cuckoo and definitely taking inspiration from Fugazi and DC Hardcore, Andrew and Jamie went it alone, theirs was a DIY punk/post-hardcore work ethic that was absolutely inspirational – tours of the UK and Ireland were often over 60 dates long. I first saw them 2003 and they were just incredible live. Zero For Conduct is a truly fantastic album and remains one of my favourite albums from the 00s.

Very excited to welcome Tim Crouch, one of British Theatre's 'great innovators', with plays that have disturbed and challenged the passive theatrical experience to The Good Listening To 'Clearing'.A wonderfully rich and textured conversation indeed.  As Tim said:  "I talked with Chris about Tony Brightwell, my dad, my dog, randy airline captains, theatre, sailing little boats, my family - but mostly the dog..."Tim Crouch is a world renowned British experimental Theatre Maker, Actor Writer & Director.  He specialises in rejecting theatrical conventions - especially realism - and prefers a form whereby the audience is invited to help image and create the work. Tim is very warmly regarded and much respected as being an "Actor's Actor"."Theatre in its purest form is 'conceptual': No need for sets, costumes & props. All exists inside the audience's head".This is particularly relatable for me because of my own love of all things Comedy Improvisation and INSTANT WIT whereby an empty stage is brimming and charged with potential where 'anything is possible', with the audience all set to colourise the scene and fill in the gaps of all the silly proceedings with their imaginations. Tim's seminal 'centre piece' play from which he says all else has evolved was My Arm, the story of an 'empty gesture'.  It's about the confession of a man who lived for thirty years by the courage of his lack of conviction.  "At the age of 10, for want of anything more meaningful to do, I put my arm above my head and kept it there".Other work includes "An Oak Tree"; TV series "Don't Forget The Driver" which he co-wrote with actor Toby Jones (as Tim's homage to his home town of Bognor Regis) plus numerous world tours with a series of plays making Shakespeare more accessible through the eyes and perspective of single characters "I, Malvolio"; I, Banquo"; I, Caliban"; "I, Peaseblossom"Stephen Bottoms, Professor of Contemporary Theatre and Performance at the University of Manchester said of Tim Crouch:"I can think of no other contemporary playwright who has asked such a compelling set of Questions about theatrical form, narrative content and a spectators's engagement".‘One of the smartest artists making theatre in Britain now.‘Kulturflash on Tim Crouch

After losing her partner in 2007, she trained as a Soul Midwife, a holistic and emotional support for those at the end of life.  At this time, she began creating an exhibition of paintings and stories around the end of life, called A Graceful Death.  For ten years, she worked both on this project and as an end of life companion, and during these years lost another husband, her parents and a brother.   But, there is addiction in Antonia's family too.  Her response is to create a new project, portraits and words from and of addiction as a way to try and understand.  She has had to find a way to survive the craziness, the destruction and the distress of watching a loved one spiral out of control and resist all help.  The project, Addicts And Those Who Love Them, behind every addict is someone traumatised by loving them, simply tells stories.  She asks other people in addiction – whether an addict, in recovery, helping addicts or in a relationship with an addict – what is happening for them.   In this moving episode, we explore: How art lights the way for healing and recovery How to love someone with addiction and take care of yourself How portraits allow addicts to see the reality of who they are How being seen and heard is the first step in healing Songs - Leave a light on by Tom Walker - Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind - Artist in the Ambulance by Thrice Listen via Spotify playlist - GET REAL with Dr Ronaye Meditation - Let go of what you know This podcast is brought to you by Ethical Change Agency. Matthew 1.21 NLT “And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Giving a name to a child is a huge moment for parents. If you have ever had that privilege. I am sure you will remember the conversations about the various possibilities. You will probably have thought about names that have been particularly important in your family together with names that you have always liked. But as you make the decision you know that the child will have to carry that name for life, in one form or another, and so you will want to be extremely careful. We have three children and I well remember the long discussions about the various names that we could use. Our third child is called Bethany for the simple reason that that is where my wife and I first met. I was leading a student group around Israel and my future wife was one of the students and we were staying in a cheap hotel on the West Bank very near Bethany. Many have asked us since then what we might have called her if we had met in Bognor Regis or Nuneaton ... and I guess the answer is probably Bethany! Jesus was given his name because that's what the angel commanded. It was a very common name and has the same root as Joshua, meaning God saves. From the very beginning of his life, it was clear that Jesus had a special mission to the world. There is no doubt that Mary became fully aware that she was bearing a very special son after her meeting with Gabriel during her pregnancy. But I would so love to know what kind of conversations Joseph and Mary had together about Jesus. It must have been a lot for this young couple to cope with and we should be amazed that they handled the situation with such grace and calmness. Jesus was going to become an inspiring teacher and a miraculous healer, but before anything else he came to be the Saviour of the World. His unique identity as fully man and fully God enabled him to do what no one else could ever do, and set humankind free from their sins. QUESTION: How important has your own name been to you? PRAYER: Loving Father, thank you for sending your Son into the world to save us from our sins. Amen
