Pneumococcal and meningococcal are caused by a bacterium that can quickly lead to serious disease including pneumonia, meningitis and septicemia. Vaccination is critical for prevention. Professor Booy emphasizes the importance of implementing routine vaccination for all at-risk individuals to effectively combat these dangerous diseases. Visit Immunisation Foundation of Australia for more information Host Steph O'Connell is a public health advocate with 25 years' experience in strategic communications. Steph's advocacy for immunisation awareness and vaccination became a collaboration in 2018 with Meningococcal Australia and resulted in Meningococcal vaccination campaigns by the Australian Government Department of Health and NSW Health. Lily's story quickly resonated with audiences and became a national and international appeal for awareness, education and vaccination. Night Came With Many Stars (Godine 2021) ebbs and flows with people who only take or destroy, balanced by those who give or heal. And everything centers on a family. A Kentucky father treats Carol, his thirteen-year-old motherless daughter like a servant up to the moment he loses her in a poker game. It's 1933, and Carol's aching heart begins a novel of stories filled with heartache or joy that weaves back and forth across decades. Carol gets rescued on the side of the road and finds a home with two women who help pregnant teenagers, a woman survives a botched self-induced abortion, a Black family saves a starving white boy, and Carol's grandson wins money playing poker. In this beautifully-written novel, characters are defined by what they do, not by what they are. Simon Van Booy is the award-winning and best-selling author of fifteen books that include: The Secret Lives of People in Love (short-listed for the Vilcek Prize), Love Begins in Winter (awarded the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award), Everything Beautiful Began After, The Illusion of Separateness, Tales of Accidental Genius, Father's Day, The Sadness of Beautiful Things (short-listed for the Edge Hill Short Story Prize), two novels for children, Gertie Milk & The Keeper of Lost Things and Gertie Milk & The Great Keeper Rescue, along with three anthologies of philosophy, Why We Fight, Why Our Decisions Don't Matter and Why We Need Love. He has has written for The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Guardian, The Times, National Public Radio, the BBC, and the Chinese edition of ELLE. His books have been translated into many languages and optioned for film. In 2013, he founded Writers for Children, a project which helps young people build confidence in their storytelling abilities through annual awards. He lives in New York with his wife and daughter. This program was held live on Wednesday, November 18 - 12:00pm - 1:00pm About the book: When they meet in the 1930s, Doris and Tup's love is immediate. They marry quickly and Doris commits to the only life Tup ever wanted: working the Senter family farm, where his parents and grandparents and great-grandparents are buried under the old pines. Their lives follow the calming rhythms of the land—chores in the cow barn, haying the fields, tending their gardens—and in this they find immeasurable joy. Soon their first child, Sonny, is born and Doris and Tup understand they are blessed. More children arrive—precocious, large-hearted Dodie and quiet, devoted Beston—but Doris and Tup take nothing for granted. They are grateful every day for the grace of their deep bonds to each other, to their family, and to their bountiful land. As they hold fast to this contentment, Doris is uneasy, and confesses, “We can't ever know what will come.” When an unimaginable tragedy turns the family of five into a family of four, everything the Senters held faith in is shattered. The family is consumed by a dark shadow of grief and guilt. Slowly, the surviving Senters must find their way to forgiveness—of themselves and of each other. New York Times bestselling author Meredith Hall's radiant debut novel is a study of love—both its gifts and its obligations—that will stay with readers long after the last page. With a rare tenderness and compassion, Beneficence illuminates the heart's enduring covenants and compromises. About the authors: Meredith Hall is the author of the novel Beneficence. Her memoir Without a Map was instantly recognized as a classic of the genre and became a New York Times bestseller. It was named Best Book of the Year by Kirkus and BookSense, as well as Elle's “Readers' Pick of the Year.” Ms. Hall was a recipient of the 2004 Gift of Freedom Award from A Room of Her Own Foundation. Her work has appeared in Five Points, The Gettysburg Review, The Kenyon Review, The Southern Review, The New York Times, and many other publications. Hall divides her time between Maine and California. Simon Van Booy is the award-winning and best-selling author of fourteen books, including Love Begins in Winter (winner of the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award) and Everything Beautiful Began After, which Andre Dubus III called, “A powerful meditation on the undying nature of love and the often cruel beauty of one's own fate.” He has written for The New York Times, The Guardian, National Public Radio, The Financial Times, and the BBC. His next novel, Night Came With Many Stars, will be published in 2021.

In this episode, we talk about the challenges faced and the mindset necessary to keep going and reach the end of your book.My work with Simon has been instrumental in writing a better book, staying focused on completing and learning that revision really is a fun and empowering part of writing a book. In this episode, Simon and I discuss the process of revision, as well as how we have worked together on my book. It was so much fun to get his take on the book and to be able to share more of the inside scoop on my revision with you. Happy listening and happy revising!Visit this episode's show notes page here: https://www.secretlibrarypodcast.com/episodes/simon-van-booy-s2-ep13 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Reader. Today our guest is Simon Van Booy. Simon is the award winning and best selling author of nine books of fiction and three anthologies of philosophy. He has written for the NYT, The Financial Times, NPR and the BBC. In 2013 he founded Writers for Children, a project which helps young people build confidence in their storytelling abilities through annual awards. His latest work is The Sadness of Beautiful Things published this month by Penguin. And as most of you know, I own an independent bookshop, Wellington Square Books, and I have just ordered all of Simon’s books, including his children’s books about Gertie Milk. The Sadness of Beautiful Things is a book of short stories that grab you, from the epigraph on, and hold you and release you throughout. In fact, I went back and read most of the stories two times and one specific one three times. Each time you read and re-read you discover more about yourself and the characters in the book as well as recognizing what the title represents and what that means to the characters’ lives and to our own. I love short stories and these are some of the best I have read. As I have told my customers, “Buy this book. If you don’t like it, bring it back”. So far they have each flown far away, never to return.

This conversation was absolute and total heaven. Much like Simon Van Booy's latest book, the story collection "The Sadness of beautiful Things," this episode covers a wide variety of topics. However, even as we moved from beginnings, to endings, to the thought and work it took to get various stories right, we kept coming back to one central theme" what does it take to write a good story? Simon is a brilliant guide in this arena, and shared the circumstances of the stories he's been told while traveling that lead, over time, to the ones that made up this collection. We talk about the trickiness of happy endings, how to deal with the tough stuff, and so much more. I've been counting the days until this book came out because I'm so excited for you to read it, and to get to hear this chat. Happy listening.
