Why is it important to explore British values in school?
My guest this week is Jan Germen Janmaat, Professor of Political Socialisation at University College London. We discuss his research on schools' role in creating a national identity and promoting civic values. We discuss attitudes to politics, political participation, and immigration. He finds a worrying social divide and an encouraging acceptance of liberal values among young people. Note: It was the statue of Edward Colston that was pulled down in Bristol.
Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
Anna Ansted has been working with international charity, Lepra, for 9 years. Lepra works in India, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe helping people affected by leprosy. Every day 600 people are diagnosed with leprosy; 50 of those are children. Anna works with schools across the UK to raise awareness about leprosy – that it still exists, that it is curable and with more support, Lepra can help more people. Working with schools for over 50 years, Lepra have develop a schools' programme that offers students key learning benefits with strong curriculum links which embed British Values and citizenship. The programme highlights the importance of charities and the work they do and helps students to understand the role they play as global citizens. As part of Lepra's schools' programme, they have teamed up with Maria's Island author, Victoria Hislop, illustrator, Gill Smith, and Walker Books to develop an educational project, available for schools to download and use for free. The story of Maria's Island, as seen through the eyes of 10-year-old Maria and her family, helps young people understand the challenges people with leprosy face and, most importantly, how they can be overcome. https://www.lepra.org.uk/marias-island (Download the free Educational Project Resource) including a video assembly with a reading by Victoria Hislop, a free Maria's Island PDF extract, and helpful teacher notes that prompt exploration into the book's complex themes. Anna is married with two primary-aged children and is passionate about inspiring children to use their creative talents to fundraise and help make a difference for people whose lives are affected by leprosy. My guest on Episode 12 of Confidence Conversation, the last in this series, is the inspiring Kate Harris who is the Founder and CEO of VotesForSchools. This is a great conversation about confidence as Kate is possibly the most resilient person I know which I think naturally gives you confidence when you feel like you have nothing left in your tank. We chat about lots of confidence things including visiting the bank manager in flipflops, and how the foundations of confidence can mean you either have a mansion on those foundations or you have a crumbling bungalow. Kate began her teaching career in 2000 and very quickly found a passion for Citizenship, PSHE, and student voice. Kate left teaching in 2014 to follow her dream of finding a way to support schools in developing SMSC & British Values, making it engaging to children and young people, and getting students to discuss the biggest issues affecting them today. Kate's Citizenship teaching days also developed her desire to see young people becoming more involved in democracy and voting. Kate co-founded VotesforSchools which enables any teacher regardless of subject or experience to feel confident to discuss tricky subjects and then vote, VotesforSchools takes this voting data and uses it to inform influential people and groups about what young people think and feel about a variety of political issues.Find out more about the incredible work VotesForSchools does by following them on the channels below:https://www.votesforschools.com/https://twitter.com/votesforschoolshttps://www.instagram.com/votesforschools/https://www.facebook.com/votesforschoolsConnect with Kate:kate@votesforschools.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/kate-harris-767989110/Want to know more about me & Enrichment Coaching then follow the link below to my website. https://www.enrichmentcoaching.co.uk/
Prevent is one of four limbs of the government's anti-terrorism policy. It is directed at behaviours and ideas that the government deems to be extreme and to represent a possible ‘gateway' to violent offences. The Prevent duty applies in schools, colleges and universities and many other public spaces. It professes to safeguard individuals and funnel those at risk to programmes/interventions of de-radicalisation. In light of the Government's upcoming Independent Review under William Shawcross, many have voiced opposition to this policy, arguing that Prevent entails marginalisation, racism and problematises certain ‘communities' that are perceived as being against ‘British Values'. Today I am joined by Prof John Holmwood and Dr Gavin Bailey, who are both counter terrorism experts as we discuss the future of prevent, it's criticisms and the recently published People's Review of Prevent. We also talk about John's book (together with Therese O'Toole) on the Birmingham Trojan Horse affair and the problems of intervening in a pre-criminal space with the most vulnerable in our society. The report can be found here: https://peoplesreviewofprevent.org/ John's book can be found here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Countering-Extremism-British-Schools-Birmingham-ebook/dp/B0772TGVN2
This week Shain is joined by her sisters Sara and Anisa to discuss the Trojan Horse Affair, in light of the recent Serial podcast series (presented by Brian Reed fellow Brummie Hamza Syed). As three proud Muslim Brummies, Shain and her sisters have been directly affected by the scandal; here they recount their experiences both inside and outside education. Listen to learn about the complexities of the hijab, the damage done by Prevent, the nonsensical implementation of British Values in schools, and the fact that (sadly) everyone has worked with a Sue Packer. Sara is a senior science technician in a secondary school and Anisa is a specialist pharmacist in a hospital.

What is British Islam? It is when you adopt British values and then go to Islam to interepret however you wish with as much Dhikr, Salah, Fasting, Hajj or as little as you like as long as it fits within the British values as its basis. For Muslims, the Islamic Aqueedah is our basis and the Quran and Sunnah is the lens through which we see and understand the world. British Values and Islam do not mix just like Truth & Falsehood do not mix. We must not hide the truth about the real value of Islam that Muslims can only visualise and realise under the Khilafah system and the unity of the Muslims. We must not mix the truth with the falsehood like the Banu Israel mentioned in Surah Baqarah which Allah warns us about: "And believe in that which I reveal, confirming that which ye possess already (of the Scripture), and be not first to disbelieve therein, and part not with My revelations for a trifling price, and keep your duty unto Me. " "And do not mix up the truth with the falsehood, nor hide the truth while you know (it). " "Keep up prayer, pay the welfare tax, and worship along with those who bow their heads"(TMQ Baqarah 241-243).
Breakthrough comedian Tez Ilyas presents a show for everyone interested in - or interested in becoming - a British Muslim. Everything you need to know is here - the do's, don'ts, and avoid-or-you'll-be-arresteds. Simultaneously a hilarious, joyous celebration of British-Muslim life - and a subversive, thoughtful satire on society's attitudes to Islam. In this episode, Tez looks at 'British Values'. Recent legislation means we're all obliged to know about British Values to avoid the path to extremism... but what are British Values? Who decides them? And does Benidorm hold the answer? Tez explains all... About Tez Blackburn-born Tez Ilyas started performing comedy in 2010 and has appeared in eight competition finals including the BBC New Comedy Award and Leicester Mercury New Comedian of the Year. He has recently appeared on the Now Show on Radio 4, as well as having performances on BBC1, BBC 3, E4, and BBC iPlayer, following his hugely critically-acclaimed debut Edinburgh show. Producer: Sam Bryant A BBC Studios Production.

Episode 8 of The Curriculum podcast provides an introduction to teaching children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC), and fundamental British values (FBV). We cover what those things mean, their impact on children's learning, and how schools can make sure they cover the requirements set out by Ofsted. Here at Cornerstones, we've been working on SMSC and FBV a lot over the last 12 months. That includes explaining how the Cornerstones Curriculum incorporates SMSC to launching Cornerstones Yoimoji, a new product that helps schools put values at the heart of children's learning.

Professor Gary McCulloch, UCL Institute of Education, gives a talk for the Education Public seminar series on 27th February 2017. Conservative policies in education have often been analysed in terms of their neoliberal characteristics. In the early years of the 21st century, the neoconservative themes of education policy are also highly visible, in particular social wellbeing, national character, and British values, strongly influenced by broader contemporary issues but also by longer-term historical legacies. In this seminar we will review briefly the key themes of Conservative policies in education in the 20th century before examining the emergence of neoconservative themes over the past decade, continuities and changes in education policy since the 1980s, and current prospects for new and alternative themes. Dr Liam Gearon, Philosophy, Religion and Education Research Forum
Acts 8:1-4 North Korea ranks first place in its relentless, systematic persecution of Christians via its communist dictator Kim Jong Un. Worship of the ruling Kim family is mandatory for all, and those failing to comply are imprisoned, tortured or killed. Across the Muslim world in countries such as Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Yemen; those daring to leave the ranks of Islam are martyred for their faith in Jesus Christ. The only thing that sets them apart from us in the West is mere location! Yet, we see in my own country of Great Britain, the storm clouds beginning to gather momentum and increased levels of persecution arising on the back of so called “British Values” and “Diversity”. What is our response to be when persecution comes to our doorstep on account of our faith in Jesus Christ? Do we stay or do we go? Do we stand and remain or do we retreat and flee? This sermon seeks to bring a balanced and biblical answer to this question that will serve to help prepare the Body of Christ for the coming storm!
(Speaker:Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury)Will “Muslim” values ever be regarded as synonymous with British ones? Hardly a month goes by without someone prominent saying British values and Islamic values are at odds with each other. Former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams weighs in on the character of the country and gives his frank views on what British Muslims must do. (Recorded at the Living Islam Festival, UK www.livingislam.org.uk)
“British Values” according to Prime Minister David Cameron, describe the “democracy, the rule of law, freedom of speech, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different beliefs and faiths." Its introduction is a response by the state to what it perceives to be Black, Minority and Ethnic (BAME) communities growing and representing a threat to the norms inherited by hundreds of years of colonial rule. What is portrayed as a way of “uniting” communities can be a way of policing culture and in particular cultures of colour. Invariably, it can also be a way for the government to criminalise articulations of dissent from BAME communities who express the frustrations of marginalisation. The zine British Values is a response to “British Values.” Written and created by journalist Kieran Yates, the zine seeks to “rewrite the narrative of what "British values" are by passing our aux cords over to taxi drivers, re-visiting our school lunch boxes and generally shining the spotlight on the lives and experiences of non-native Brits.” Kieran will be discussing “What the fuck British Values” really are and how BAME and how she as a women of colour is creatively responding.
