Episode 61: Dee AllumDee Allum brings her debut show ‘Deadname' to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, performing at 4:30pm at Pleasance Courtyard Below from 31st July to 25th Aug (excluding Tuesday 13th). Tickets here. https://www.instagram.com/dee_allum/BBC New Comedy Awards finalist Dee Allum (Comedy Central Live) is set to bring her highly-anticipated debut stand-up comedy hour ‘Deadname' to the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe, performing at Pleasance Courtyard at 4.30pm throughout the festival. She's here! She's queer! Her parents are sort of used to it! In her debut stand-up show, Dee Allum, the greatest (and only) transgender comedian her small village has ever produced, is determined to move on with her life. Questions will be asked and answered like: What is a woman? Shut up! But you've kept your Watford FC season ticket? It's allowed! And at what point is it morally acceptable to return a puppy if they misgender you? The jury is out!But most importantly, Dee is on a mission to fully embrace who she used to be. From being a little theatre kid who was too chubby to play Oliver Twist, to a love-sick teen who learnt a new language to impress his crush, to discovering that she was transgender whilst at an all boys school. All to have to go through two puberties (frankly, two too many). Will Dee come to terms with her past selves, and become the perfect, flawless, 34DD woman that she always imagined herself to be? After all, didn't every boy dream of this from time to time?Dee Allum is an award-winning stand-up comedian and writer. Dee started her comedy career performing sketches with the Cambridge Footlights and wrote the prestigious Footlights Pantomime in 2018. Dee was part of the Pleasance Comedy Reserve 2022 line-up, has written and performed a 45-minute solo stand-up show, and started to become a regular fixture on the UK comedy circuit, as well as performing at cultural events such as Latitude Festival. In the last two years Dee has been nominated for Best Newcomer at the Chortle Awards, placed as runner up in the Leicester Square Theatre New Comedian of the Year award 2021, won the 2Northdown New Act Competition 2021 and was a finalist in the 2022 BBC New Comedy Award competition. Dee has appeared on Comedy Central Live, as part of Comedy Central's digital series, and is also set to make her debut on The Stand Up Sketch Show on ITV this summer.#HYGYSTPOD #haveyougotyoursh*ttogether #HYGYST #caitlinoryan #deeallumHave You Got Your Sh*t Together? with Caitlin O'Ryan, is a podcast that celebrates not having your sh*t together! BBC New Comedy Award News and Another Groping Story.
Comedian Tom Allen joins me for a hilarious chat - he discusses early life in primary school and growing up in Bromley, the National Youth Theatre, winning the BBC New Comedy Award and So You Think You're Funny at the age of 22, and his rise to success. Tom is a natural storyteller, and loves to chat, and we end up digressing a lot. I was lucky to be able to record with him and fit around his busy schedule! We even get a cameo from Angela Barnes, who enters after bumping into Gloria Hunniford in the lift of ITV and being starstruck.
This week we spoke with comedian and writer Steve Bugeja. Since winning the BBC New Comedy Award in 2013, Steve has gone on to host the BBC Radio 4 series Economics with Subtitles, and has appeared on Love Island: Aftersun (ITV2), Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central (Comedy Central). Steve has also performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for the past two years, appearing on the Opening Night Comedy Allstars Supershow (ABC1) and on Comedy Up Late (ABC1). In this episode, Steve talks to us about working in a highly pressured environment, how he has recently started to have therapy and how perfectionism can sometimes get the better of him, as well as gives us a hilarious insight into his up and coming show 'Single Mum' debuting at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival later this year! Thanks Steve, enjoy everyone!
The Fourth is with us! Steve sits down with William Stone, a comedian whose well-honed on-stage persona is like a quantum-locked throwback to a brighter, happier, funnier time. In a thoughtful and considered chat, Billy and Steve cut deep into their own pasts to answer the nagging questions of the present: Were the good ol' days really so? Can Jar-Jar Binks be fixed in one single scene rewrite? Does anyone ever get to live in the decade they were born for? Does the current "trend" of big-reveal confessional comedy really have more integrity than honest-to-goodness jokes and clowning? And will we ever see a return to the time when comedy was uncalculating, child-like and for everyone? In 2018 William was a finalist in the BBC New Comedy Award, appearing on BBC Radio4 and BBC Radio2. In 2019 he is doing his first solo comedy show "Gathering Moss" at Brighton and Edinburgh fringe festivals. Definitely a talent to watch and follow; a one-liner comedian that truly feels singular. In this episode, Tez looks at 'Integration', a word that's often used in the context of Muslims in the UK. How can Muslims integrate better? And who says they don't at the moment? And more importantly, what's Marks & Spencer or hipster beards got to do with it? Tez explains all... About Tez Blackburn-born Tez Ilyas started performing comedy in 2010 and has appeared in eight competition finals including the BBC New Comedy Award and Leicester Mercury New Comedian of the Year. It seems from the news, all Muslims belong to the 'Muslim Community' - but what is this mysterious organisation? Who runs it? What does it do? And does Nadiya from Bake Off speak for them all? Tez gets to the bottom of it... All the fun of the fair as Phil Ellis ambles through another day at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Phil and Andrew Maxwell visit a bric-a-brac market.
Phil talks to Susan Calman, BBC New Comedy Award winner Jethro Bradley and Richard Gadd A BBC Studios Production
Phil hears from Mark Watson, Ian D Montfort and the BBC New Comedy Award hopefuls.
“It’s woven very densely into the fabric of my life,” explains Josie Long. “It happens when you do your accounting every year. You look at your receipts, and everything there you’ve written about.” The comedian began her standup career at the tender age of 14, scoring a BBC New Comedy Award three years later. Having spent more than half her years on Earth as a standup, it’s certainly understandable that comedy has become the filter through which Long examines her life. I caught up with the comedian ahead during a week-long string of shows in New York. She’d been out swimming in the ice cold Atlantic in the midst of an autumn chill, her voice slightly worse for wear. But she happily spoke the cross section of the personal and professional, an area she had been mining heavily for the set she was performing later that evening. Cara Josephine trades her often political source material in for stories about family and failed relationships, making for far away Long’s most personal show to date.
