Video version: https://youtu.be/fJWJgieaZN4 From hosting parties as kids on two home hifis in a small west country town to playing some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the world, schooldays best friends Nick Halkes and Andy Smith have enjoyed amazing careers both individually and together. Here they talk about remixing , touring and so much more as they prepare for the release of the third instalment of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation series on BBE that Andy compiles. As schooldays best friends Andy and Nick ran a mobile disco together and hunted for bargain 12 inch vinyl in their childhood home town of Portishead near Bristol. At this point they had no idea that Andy would supply beats and tour the world with Portishead before one of the top 100 djs in the world nor that Nick would go on to set up the XL and Positiva labels becoming one of the UK mst respected dance and electronic music industry executives. Reach Up launched more than five years ago at London basement venue The Waiting Rooms and soon after appeared at Carl Cox's night at Space, Ibiza where they played for three seasons on the bounce and then also began packing out their monthly London residency at Peckham's South London Soul Train (hosted at the legendary Bussey Building). Following the 2017 release of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation on the renowned BBE Records, Volume 2 was released in 2019. Andy and Nick's re-edits of two tracks on the 2017 Reach Up Disco Wonderland comp were just the start. Nick's collaboration with Full Intention, both to release original music on Midnight Riot and remix State of the Nation feat the Jungle Brothers, gained support from Purple Disco Machine, Dimitri from Paris and Roger Sanchez. From there a chart topping Nick Reach Up remix of Hideaway by De'lacey followed and a Nick Reach Up collab with Birdee and vocal legend Barbara Tucker that scored coveted daytime Radio One play in the UK whilst hitting top 3 on Traxsource. An invitation to remix Mel C took the Nick Reach Up sound into new territory whilst a rework of Body Work by Hot Streak also took off. Most recently Nick was approached to remix the Kylie single Magic taken from her album appropriately entitled ‘Disco' and in October 2020 had 4 remixes of his simultaneously in the Music Week Upfront Top 20. In the time that all this was happening amongst other achievements Andys re-edit of Will Sessions & Amp Fiddler feat. Dames Brown – Lost Without You notched up a tune of the month accolade in Mixmag. Despite having much to look back on Reach Up's monthly radio show on the award-winning Soho Radio features regular guest mixes from the likes of Full Intention, Jumpin' Jack Frost, Young Pulse, Danny Rampling and more showcasing the hottest new music along with classic and more hidden gems from back in the day. Despite knowing each other for decades maybe this is still just the start for Nick and Andys Reach Up Disco Wonderland adventure?!

In 2018 Tom treated us to one of the great Love Supreme mainstage performances despite being one of the youngest performers to have ever graced that stage. He has an instantly recognisable sound that he draws from Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop, Soul and a little bit of disco that has made him one of the biggest UK artists to have broken through in the last five years despite not signing to a major label. Something of a reluctant star, Tom Misch is modest, generous with praise and totally dedicated to his craft. Find out about how he was able to sell out Bussey Building despite having never played a live show before, his love for Jordan Rakei, how the Red Hot Chili Peppers are influencing his next record and a bit more about an afternoon in Glynde in 2018 that you might remember.

Svelte are South London selectors Martin Sage, Sam J & Jurassic Mark. With a long-standing history of throwing parties together at Peckham institution The CLF Art Cafe aka Bussey Building, Svelte came to life after a sweaty pub gig b2b in 2019 - recognising a shared ability to send British boozers into ecstatic disarray. Zoom parties have taken the place of our usual night time movements for now, whilst musical tonics continue to be served up via the Svelte NRG & REMEDY mix series. All you really need to know about Podcast Number 30 is that it was recording on Wednesday 20 February 2019 at the Bussey Building - a former Victorian cricket bat factory saved from demolition ten years ago. It's home to a new opera - Robin Hood - premiered at the end of February, written by former Royal College of Music graduate Dani Howard, and performed by a small cast accompanied by the Aurora Orchestra. There is an infectious kind of energy to small scale fringe-infused endeavours like this. The excerpts you hear in between the interviews were recorded at the first play-through with orchestra - known in the trade as 'the sitzprobe'. Ransom Note enters the world of conversation as we launch our new Podcast series with our very own Joe Europe. Episode one is brought to you by Rode Microphones... South London's musical history goes way back but, over the last couple of years, one of the cornerstones of the scene has undoubtedly been Rye Wax. Part record shop, part music venue, part taco joint, the multifaceted organisation situated in the basement of the Bussey Building seemed to become one of the key creative hubs in Peckham almost as soon as it opened its doors. Right from the get go the Rye Wax team focused on pushing local artists, labels and parties which has given the shop a strong sense of community. But, as they mark their second birthday, has it been a smooth ride so far and what is it like to operate in a climate of club closures and tight profit margins? On a sticky night in August Joe Europe sat down with the shop's management team to chew the fat, discussing setting up the shop, the ever-changing musical landscape and watching football with Egyptian Lover. Listen to the podcast, brought to you courtesy of Rode microphones whom without this would never have been possible...

Arriving with barely a minute to spare from The Bussey Building where I'd witnessed a stunning show from Brian Jackson & The New Midnight Band, this was a Cosmic Jam that once again came together in a hurry but I don't think suffers in the slightest as a result. Sometime the most spontaneous.... Native Dancer have a great name ( I think) even if it's cribbed from Wayne Shorter (the album he made with Milton Nascimento no less), and the music is also worthy of that audacious theft. Though a name is all they've borrowed, all the other elements are sufficiently scrambled as to remain traceless, though I'd venture there's everything from broken beat to Joni Mitchell, Weather Report to pop woven in to their sound. Most of the rest of the show isn't quite so contemporary, but next week I'll definitely be playing some/a lot /all of the new Rebirth album which had me seriously mesmerised this afternoon...... Big album alert. However the Intuit collaboration with Andy Bey definitely deserves a reboot as it's something I probably only played a couple of times back when it came out in 2004 and for me has all the hallmarks of a classic. Metheny's "Have You Heard" is the first of two jazz tunes that have that upful buoyancy that I cherish and need to keep me smiling through the dark days of winter. Ditto the smile factor with Woody Shaw's "Rosewood", and Bobby Hutcherson's version is just as strong as the composer's more horn-heavy original. More contemporary flavour jazz with Woodland Conclave, (another name I find rather leasing) and the epic "Celebration Of Live (Song For Simon)" Did they mean life? Who cares, they manage the transition between rolling waltz time to sprightly samba fusion very sweetly, and keep the groove hummin' all the way down the track. Having played an epic, there wasn't quite room for all of Ryo Kawasaki's oddball jazz-funk "The Breeze And I " , I wanted to squeeze in a trio of MPBistas with soulful measures of Brazilian groove before the top of the hour and a dive into classic Cosmic Jam horizontalisms. Second hour segue, a classic hippy space jam/ cinematic jazz workout, Spirit's "Ice" is a long time favourite. Put it this way, I played it long before I heard Common's "Resurrection" (which I also love) that sampled the hook deftly. Sparkling.... Toninho Horta's "Diana" has all the classic melodic/harmonic traits of the Minas Gerais sound I love so deeply and I don't think I'd ever really absorbed that tune before, loveliness. Marion Brown's version of Stevie's Visions is another Cosmic Jam perennial though following it with the evergreen "You Are My Starship" felt very right, even more so the Oliver Nelson beauty that follows.... Last half hour swings from classic 2-step, by way of a "free soul" nugget from the land down under, an Hawaiian reissue, and another from Athens Of the North to a righteous soulful conclusion from Arabi. Sounds outernational?Maybe it is, but mainly it's just soul. Until next time Love, peace and harmony P.x 1.Native Dancer - Love 2. Intuit ft. Andy Bey - Planet Birth 3.
