We're watching Under the Tuscan Sun this week, and going back to what we're now learning was a fantastic year for the American economy: 2003. No wonder 35-year-old women felt so much more settled than they do today... Seriously, if we didn't know what she looked like and someone told us Frances was in her 50s, we'd believe them. It makes a lot more sense.  Frances, played by Diane Lane, is a writer recovering from a recent divorce. She takes the advice of her best friend, Patti, played by Sandra Oh, and goes to Italy on vacation. She buys a fixer-upper villa, makes friends and forms a family.  You can find this movie for streaming on Hulu. Email us at MadeMePodcast@gmail.comFind us on:Facebook: www.facebook.com/MadeMePodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/myhusbandmademedoit/ Podcast artwork by Anna Eggleton of Treehouse Lettering & Design: https://www.treehouseletteringanddesign.com/

The names of Jeffrey Epstein's associates are likely to be published today, after a judge in the US ordered the release of court documents. Epstein took his own life after he was accussed of sexually abusing and trafficking underage girls. Names connected to him have previously been anonymised as John or Jane Doe; but now around 170 people, mostly men, will have their association with the former financier made public. Joan Smith, journalist and author, and Georgina Calvert-Lee, an equality lawyer at Bellevue Law, tell Emma Barnett what the list will mean.Lavinia Greenlaw is one of the country's leading poets and has now published a selected edition of her work, covering three decades of writing. She tells Emma about her new role as poetry editor at Faber, the first woman to hold the position. She is now the custodian of a back catalogue that includes TS Eliot, Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes, and the gatekeeper for aspiring poets of the next generation. It is ten years since journalist Alison O'Reilly revealed that up to 796 babies were buried in a mass, unmarked grave in the grounds of a former mother and baby home in Galway in Ireland. The Irish government has promised compensation but none has been paid out. Is this now about to change? Alison joins Emma to discuss the latest developments. And how far would you go to help a friend? In Lindsay Duncan's new drama, Truelove, on Channel 4, a drunken reunion at a funeral leads a group of friends to make a pact: they will support each other in assisted dying rather than let a friend suffer alone. Lindsay tells Emma how a thriller starring a cast in their 70s and 80s is turning the police procedural on its head.Producer: Hannah Sander Presenter: Emma Barnett

This week the ghouls discuss Philip Ridley's 1990 film, The Reflecting Skin. It's a weird one! From wiki: “The Reflecting Skin is a 1990 British-Canadian dramatic horror film written and directed by Philip Ridley and starring Jeremy Cooper, Viggo Mortensen and Lindsay Duncan. Described by its director as a "mythical interpretation" of childhood,[4] the film weaves elements of vampirism, surrealism, black comedy, symbolism, and religious zealotry throughout its narrative about the perceptions and fantasies of an impressionable young boy in 1950s America. The Reflecting Skin places the majority of its action outdoors around the dilapidated farms and in the wheat fields of Idaho shot in idyllic sunlight which belies the dark secrets of the characters and plot.”They also discuss The Cure, Mr. Klein, Alain Delon, Europe, Europa, Udo Kier, Saltburn, Promising Young Woman, Priscilla, Sofia Coppola, Terrence Malick, Margot Tenenbaum, Mike Leigh, Weyes Blood, Flannery O' Connor, David Lynch, Roger Ebert, Mario Bava, and more! NEXT WEEK: Rift (2017) Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/joshuaconkel.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

Lindsay Duncan says she is a photographer, "of people and the things they make - musicians, writers, artists...I view my position as a photographer as a liaison between the public and the artists' private moments; a position that requires artists to trust my intent and respect their work."I am most familiar with Lindsay's work shooting musicians, but she does everything from professional headshots to commercial photography. She is also fresh off the road from photographing Jagmeet Singh on the campaign trail leading up to the 2021 federal election. We first crossed paths at a studio session where she captured some wonderful photos of Matt Mays and myself while I was interviewing him.  Her warm energy felt like a match for something I was dreading: new headshots.  Does everyone dread new headshots as much as I do?  I hope I look like this for awhile because I HATE HEADSHOTS and I was so thrilled with how they turned out. Find a few here: https://www.facebook.com/BurketalksWhen I was getting ready to launch this podcast, she was the first person that came to mind to help me update my image a bit.  I thought, if I'm going to be awkward as hell anyway, I better hire someone who will make me feel comfortable. If anything, she seemed like a photographer I could at least enjoy hanging out with for an afternoon (and that we did).  In this episode, you'll hear Lindsay talk about her  techniques in photography as she refrains from influencing or directing the subjects she photographs and her respect for humans as subjects vs. objects.  Find out more about Lindsay and her work:http://www.lindsayduncanphoto.com/https://www.instagram.com/lindsayinmotion

Redefining the Definition of Dance With Lindsay Duncan

Lindsay Duncan has always had a passion for the performing arts and dance Lindsay started as a tv/film actor and dancer and continues to work today in various radio and voice jobs. In 2017 Lindsay's side hustle of teaching dance became increasingly more important as she grew tired of the typical dance studio experience (which has traditionally included closed-door price negotiations, secretive training with no way for parents to watch kids in class, stuffy, ugly, stale waiting rooms with no coffee (!?!) , zero access to online registration, outrageously expensive costumes, payments or any technology and unreasonably long commitment requirements of 9 months or longer) More concerning than all of that was the ongoing perpetuation of gender stereotypes that just didn't seem to be going away. She, along with her business partner decided something needed to change. By applying the simple concepts of service-based industry and combining them with real-life, high-quality dance training, Lindsay created "The School". A beautiful space where families can experience the arts together. She joined me this week to tell me more. It's an extended edition of BEHIND THE LENS this week thanks to the release of some terrific films and some wonderful filmmakers as we explore the human condition through cinema and individual introspection with our guests TOM PUTNAM, WILLIAM NORRETT, and T. ARTHUR COTTAM, plus our exclusive interview with ROGER MICHELL. First up is writer/director TOM PUTNAM talking about THE DARK DIVIDE. Adapted by Putnam and based on the best-seller WHERE BIGFOOT WALKS: CROSSING THE DARK DIVIDE by Robert Pyle, one of the most foremost authorities on wildlife and acclaimed nature writers, the film is as much about Pyle's exploration of the "Dark Divide" as it is of himself. Starring David Cross and Debra Messing and showcasing some of the most beautiful wilderness this country has to offer, the visuals and soundscape alone make THE DARK DIVIDE a "must see" film! Then, novelist, screenwriter, and actor WILLIAM NORRETT, and director/cinematographer T. ARTHUR COTTAM are on hand for their first collaboration, ONE HOUR OUTCALL, an examination of a longstanding and complex relationship between an "escort" and her client. Non-linear in its construct, the unfolding dynamic and examinations of internal motivations and conflict fascinate. Listen as William talks about crafting the script in its non-linear form and then T picks it up from there, with additional casting and taking the words on the page and constructing a visual design that adds elements of a thriller thanks to interesting (and often challenging) camera angles and editing, only to be punctuated by effective scoring. Plus, discover just how small and collaborative the independent film world is as we hear from all the boys about T. Arthur Cottam providing some ADR on THE DARK DIVIDE while ONE HOUR OUTCALL editor Sam Hook also served as co-editor on THE DARK DIVIDE! And then we go into overtime talking about BLACKBIRD with our exclusive interview with director ROGER MICHELL. Long a favorite and always a joy to speak with about filmmaking and storytelling, I spoke with Roger last week about his latest film, BLACKBIRD, an ensemble piece starring Susan Sarandon, Sam Neill, Kate Winslet, Mia Wasikowska, Rainn Wilson, and Lindsay Duncan. A remake of the 2014 Danish film, Silent Heart, listen as we discuss the film's themes of a family's love, life and death, the human condition, as told through powerful performances, and metaphoric storytelling thanks to Mike Eley's stunning cinematography, Peter Gregson's exquisite score, and John Paul Kelly's production design. And then there's Unjoo Moon's I AM WOMAN, her biopic on Helen Reddy, and one of my personal faves of the year. Already out on VOD and digitally, if you're a Helen Reddy fan, you're going to love this film. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Edward Albee’s 1966 play A Delicate Balance won him the first of his three Pulitzer Prizes. It has become one of his most highly regarded and frequently produced works, and returns for its third run on Broadway with one of the season’s starriest casts.  Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy were the stars of the original production. George Grizzard and Rosemary Harris played the lead couple in the well-regarded revival in 1996. Now, as the play nears its 50th anniversary, John Lithgow and Glenn Close are the couple whose well-appointed suburban home takes in an alcoholic sister (Lindsay Duncan), a wounded daughter (Martha Plimpton) and friends (Clare Higgins and Bob Balaban), who bring with them an unknown fear. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood — without fear — considers the play and its new cast. The production, directed by Pam MacKinnon, runs through February at the John Golden Theatre.

With Mark LawsonBreathless is a new prime-time period drama from ITV set in a London hospital during the early sixties. The programme follows the lives of a group of doctors and nurses and, like Mad Men and The Hour, combines period glamour with historical social commentary. Neurosurgeon Henry Marsh reviews.Le Week-End stars Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan as a middle aged couple who embark on a trip to Paris to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary, with less than romantic results. The comedy is the latest collaboration from writer Hanif Kureishi and director Roger Michell. Jenny McCartney reviews. The conductor John Eliot Gardiner discusses the life and music of JS Bach, who he regards as the greatest composer. Gardiner's book, which he has spent the last decade writing, presents an "unsanitised" version of Bach, revealing his brutalising schooling, his brushes with the law, and the difficult conditions in which he wrote such masterpieces as The St Matthew Passion and the B Minor Mass.Producer Stephen Hughes.

During her visit to the Brooklyn Academy of Music with the Abbey Theatre's production of Ibsen's "John Gabriel Borkman", Fiona Shaw discusses taking on one point of this lesser-known play's unromantic triangle and links her work with co-stars Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan back to their membership in the Royal Shakespeare Company 25 years ago. She also talks about having to get a degree in philosophy before she was allowed to enroll at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art; her quick leap from RADA to the stage of the National Theatre in "The Rivals" -- and why she stayed too long; the unique confluence of talents that came together at the RSC during her time there; her ongoing collaboration with director Deborah Warner and the uproars that accompanied their productions of Beckett's "Footfalls" and Shakespeare's "Richard II"; why she spent a lot of time as "Hedda Gabler" rearranging the furniture; how she finds modern equivalencies in the great tragedies like "Medea" and "Electra"; her first encounter with Chekhov, doing "The Seagull" under the director Peter Stein, and how the rehearsal process at Stein's Italian home influenced the production; how she and Warner were permitted to do Beckett's "Happy Days" after being "banned for life" from Beckett's work 13 years prior; how she approached T.S. Eliot's poem "The Waste Land" as a theatrical text; and the great fun she had throwing off her tragedian's mantle to appear in "London Assurance" with Simon Russell Beale.
