DescriptionFelix Mendelssohn: The Wunderkind Who Composed with Spark & Soul in 60 Seconds. Take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactFelix Mendelssohn's first known composition, a *Piano Quartet in C minor*, was completed when he was just 13 years old. Written in 1822, this ambitious work already showed remarkable maturity, blending classical elegance with hints of youthful intensity. It was one of many early pieces that demonstrated Mendelssohn's exceptional talent and foreshadowed his future as a celebrated composer. His sense of structure, melodic grace, and expressive depth made even his earliest compositions stand out.__________________________________________________________________About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer & actor living in Toronto. Donald Macleod & Dr Jennifer Martyn explore the remarkable, tragic story of gifted violinist and composer, Amanda Maier Amanda Maier was one of the 19th century's most brilliant musicians, yet whose story was almost lost to history. Born in the small Swedish town of Landskrona, her virtuoso talent at the violin saw her rise to become one of Europe's most in-demand performers: giving private and public concerts of major works by Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Bruch, as well as her own dazzling compositions. Maier was a friend of Grieg, Brahms, Clara Schumann and Ethel Smyth and her music was reviewed in newspapers across Europe. Tragically, ill health would see her pass away at the age of just 41 and her musical legacy slowly forgotten. This week, Donald Macleod is joined by musicologist and violinist Dr Jennifer Martyn to celebrate Amanda Maier's life and work - with performances of all her extant compositions alongside works by key figures in her life, including Edward Grieg, Carl Reinecke and Maier's husband, Julius Röntgen, with whom she enjoyed a close and loving relationship in music and in life.Music Featured:Violin Sonata in B minor (3rd mvt) Preludes in E major, G sharp minor, and E flat major Violin Sonata in B minor (2nd mvt) Den sjuka flickans sång (“Song of a sick girl”) Carl Reinecke: Symphony No 2 “Hakon Jarl” (1st mvt) Piano Trio in E flat major (3rd and 4th mvts) Aftonklockan (“The Evening Clock”) Violin Sonata in B minor (1st mvt) Julius Röntgen: Serenade for Wind No 1, Op 14 (1st mvt) Piano Trio in E flat major (2nd mvt) Violin Concerto in D minor Sången (“Song”) Nine Pieces for violin and piano Piano Trio in E flat major (1st mvt) Karol Lipinski: Violin Concerto No 2 “Militaire” (2nd mvt) Nacht-mittags Potpourri (St Nicholas-Schwank) St Nicholas-Schwank (excerpt) String Quartet in A minor (2nd and 3rd mvts) Grieg: Sarabande (Holberg Suite) Swedish Tunes and Dances Allegretto (Zwiegespräche) Piano Quartet in E minor (1st and 2nd mvts) Brahms: Violin Sonata No 3 (1st mvt) Zwiegespräche (excerpts) Piano Quartet in E minor (3rd and 4th mvts)Presented by Donald Macleod Produced by Steven Rajam for BBC Audio Wales and WestFor full track listings, including artist and recording details, and to listen to the pieces featured in full (for 30 days after broadcast) head to the series page for Amanda Maier-Röntgen (1853-1894) https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001zmwn And you can delve into the A-Z of all the composers we've featured on Composer of the Week here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3cjHdZlXwL7W41XGB77X3S0/composers-a-to-z

SynopsisOn today's date in 1880, a quartet for piano and strings was premiered in Paris, with its composer, 24-year-old Gabriel Fauré, at the keyboard. Now in 1880, many Parisians knew two things about Fauré: first, that he was a talented pupil of Camille Saint-Saens; and second, that he had been engaged for years to Marianne Viardot, the daughter of legendary French singer Pauline Viardot-Garcia, and that Marianne had suddenly broken off the engagement, leaving the young man heartbroken.French pianist Marguerite Long described the quartet's slow movement as “the sorrowful echo of the breakup of Fauré's engagement with Marianne Viardot,” reporting she could not hold back her tears when she once performed the work with Fauré turning pages for her.But Faure's friend and biographer Émile Vuillermoz would dismiss the suggestion with a loud French snort, protesting that “Fauré's reserve always prevented him from following the example of Romantic artists who allowed the whole world to witness their personal frustrations. … He would never have allowed his private feelings to become a public spectacle!”In any case, Fauré's first Piano Quartet is now regarded as one of his early masterpieces, so perhaps it's both: a breakup and break-away work.Music Played in Today's ProgramGabriel Fauré (1845-1924): Piano Quartet No. 1 (Domus Ensemble) Hyperion 66166

DescriptionAaron Copland was an American composer, composition teacher, writer, and later a conductor of his own and other American music. Take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactDuring the late 1940s, Copland became aware that Stravinsky and other fellow composers had begun to study Arnold Schoenberg's use of twelve-tone (serial) techniques. After he had been exposed to the works of French composer Pierre Boulez, he incorporated serial techniques into his Piano Quartet (1950), Piano Fantasy (1957), Connotations for orchestra (1961) and Inscape for orchestra (1967). Unlike Schoenberg, Copland used his tone rows in much the same fashion as his tonal material—as sources for melodies and harmonies, rather than as complete statements in their own right, except for crucial events from a structural point of view.About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. Today I'm going to be talking about one piece, but in two different ways.  I'm going to start today with an in-depth look at Brahms' Piano Quartet in G Minor, an early piece of his that reveals an incredible sense of drama, drive, and creativity. This is very different music than I've talked about before with Brahms as this is decidedly the work of a young composer, without all the burnished maturity of Brahms' later music. This is also a great opportunity to revisit the bedrock of the Classical and Early Romantic eras, Sonata Form, a form that makes so many pieces from those eras intelligible and clear.  But I'm also going to be talking about another piece. Well, it's the same piece, but to some people, it sounds so completely different that it constitutes a completely new piece entirely. To some others, myself included, it almost constitutes an entirely new Brahms symphony. What I'm talking about is the composer Arnold Schoenberg's arrangement of Brahms's Piano Quartet for a massive orchestra, filling the stage with instruments that Brahms never would have even conceived of! You don't often think of Schoenberg and Brahms in the same breath, but Schoenberg was a devotee of Brahms' music, and often defended him against those who called him a crusty old conservative composer. But Schoenberg was still Schoenberg, and this arraangement of the quartet reflects that in a lot of ways. So along with an exploration of Sonata Form, I'll save a look at the Schoenberg arrangement for the end of th show, since this is a great chance to look at orchestration and how a composer takes a piece written for 4 people and transforms it into a piece for 100. So today we'll dive into this vast and complex piece, and along they way we'll visit Schoenberg's fascinating and sometimes downright wacky arrangement.  Join us!

She was held in high regard by the musical establishment of her time and appointed co-director of the Opera Academy in Berlin. Royalty frequently attended Mayer's concerts and awarded her gold medals for her music and other artistic endeavours. In this episode, Gustav Hoyer discusses research led by Dr. Tomas Schäfer as published through his research into the psychology of music listening (1).  Music is a mirror for our own personal inward journeys, a tool to help define our moods, and a glue that connects us to others. We explore these three reasons that his research identified and Gustav shares some of his own compositions as well as excerpts of other works that have served these functions for him. Donald Macleod looks for clues in Beethoven’s early life that point towards the great man he would become. All through 2020, Donald Macleod takes an unprecedented deep dive into the compelling story and extraordinary music of Ludwig van Beethoven. In this uniquely ambitious series, told across 125 episodes of Composer of the Week, Donald puts us inside Beethoven’s world and explores his hopes, struggles and perseverance in all the colourful detail this amazing narrative deserves. Alongside this in-depth biography, Donald will also be meeting and talking to Beethoven enthusiasts and experts from across the world to discover how his music continues to speak to us in the 21st century. Through story and sound, the series builds into a vivid new portrait of this composer, born 250 years ago this year, who made art that changed how people saw themselves and understood the world. This week, Donald looks at Beethoven’s humble beginnings as a child born into a family of court musicians, working for the Archbishop-Elector’s retinue in Bonn, Germany. He showed musical talent early and followed his father and grandfather into the Elector’s employ as soon as he reached his teens. Would he continue to follow the family pattern and retire there too? Donald Macleod explores the music of Johannes Brahms through his close relationships. Brahms was a deeply private man and very guarded about his life, his friends and his feelings. Across this week, Donald goes “Behind Closed Doors” with Brahms to discover what really made him tick. He finds friends, mentors and lovers along the way who together help solve the enigma of the composer. We’ll hear about Brahms’s doomed early romance with a young singer, Agathe von Siebold, plus his lifelong friendships with Robert, and particularly Clara Schumann - probably the person he was closest to in his life. Donald explores the music written for some of the women he knew intimately, and why he sought solitude and how it came to influence his music. Throughout his life, there was a great expectation placed on Brahms’s shoulders. We end by looking at how that shaped his character and music. Music featured: Sonata No 3 in F minor, Op 5 (4th movement) Lieder & Romanzen, Op 14 (No 4, Ein Sonett & No 7, Ständchen) Piano Concerto No 1 in D minor, Op 15 (1st movement) Ave Maria, Op 12 String Sextet No 2 in G, Op 36 (1. But it would be a mistake not to recognize the profound influence of earlier music – in particular, that of Bach. This influence has been felt in many ways. One significant development has been the emergence of historical performance: using centuries-old instruments. The first selection on our podcast, comes from this tradition: the Baroque orchestra Rebel performing an aria from Bach’s St. John Passion, with tenor Rufus Mueller. The historical instruments lend a brightness and transparency that is quite unique. We’ll then go to a modern performance of an historic work: the chamber orchestra A Far Cry playing Bach’s third Brandenburg Concerto. They bring a unique perspective to the music of Bach, playing it on modern instruments. Finally, we arrive at the most modern work of the bunch: contemporary composer David Ludwig’s Aria Fantasy for Piano Quartet. It takes some careful listening to hear, but the piece is actually based on Bach’s famous Goldberg Variations; you may hear quotes from the various movements creep in throughout the work.

Ravel: MiroirsFauré: Piano Quartet No. 2 in G minor, Op. 45We go inside the French salon to hear works by two great composers working about the turn of the last century: Ravel and Fauré. First up is a suite of bravura piano of which Chan performs three of the original five movements. The first, “Night Moths,” includes quiet, quick chromatic runs, and the second movement, “Sad Birds,” was apparently inspired by a blackbird’s song. The fourth movement of the suite, “Alborada del gracioso,” is a Spanish-tinged comic serenade. From this highly evocative, programmatic set, we move on to Fauré’s more abstract Piano Quartet. Probably best known for his art songs, Fauré was an expert melodist, which you can hear in the work’s long, soaring lines. And, as in most of his songs, each movement begins with a bit of a piano introduction, setting the scene for the string instruments’ melody.

Vivaldi: Concerto for bassoon, strings, and continuo in A minorSchumann: Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 47While the bassoon was hardly a common solo instrument at the turn of the 18th century, Vivaldi clearly took it seriously. He wrote over 39 concertos for the instrument, including the Bassoon Concerto in A minor that we’ll hear today. Why was Vivaldi so drawn to the bassoon? Theories abound: perhaps he was inspired by a well-known Venetian master of the dulcian (an early version of the bassoon) or by an accomplished bassoonist at the girls’ school where he taught. Robert Schumann wrote his Piano Quartet in E-flat Major in 1842, a year known as his “Chamber Music Year” for the abundance of chamber works he composed during that time. Why so much chamber music all at once? Part of the answer lies in the genre itself, representing an ideal middle ground between private and public entertainment. This piano quartet has moments of quiet intimacy; yet the overall texture is thick with activity and grand gestures, melding an older chamber music model with a new impulse towards soloistic virtuosity.

Dvořák: Sonatina for violin and piano in G Major, Op. 100 (arr. for viola)Dvořák: Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 87It’s odd, but true, that one of the best-known classical symphonies about America was actually written by a Czech composer. Antonin Dvořák’s “New World” symphony was written during a trip the composer took to the states in the 1890’s, and is just one of the pieces that established him as the most distinguished and well-known of Czech composers. During his time in America, Dvořák wrote other pieces as well, including the sonatina that comes first on today’s all-Dvořák program. Then, we’ll return to a Dvořák piece that’s a bit more Old World in style: his piano quartet in E-Flat Major. Written before his trip to America, this piece reflects Dvořák’s connection to European composers, particularly Brahms, who was a strong advocate for Dvorak in building his early career. The folksong-like melodies here are reminiscent not of America, but of Dvořák’s native Eastern Europe.
