AKAPAD The Film Buff shares his memories of first seeing Daredevil and his later quest to track down the DVD Director's Cut. Back in 2003, Daredevil was poised to be Marvel's next big hit, following the world-changing success of 2002's Spider-Man. However, what audiences received was unexpected. Despite its serious tone and faithful portrayal of the character's arc, the film faced mixed reactions. Over time, the internet would prove unkind to Ben Affleck's portrayal of Marvel's blind vigilante. Writer-director Mark Steven Johnson had a deep appreciation for the character, incorporating many iconic elements from the comics that defined Daredevil's milestone storylines. Yet, the film's reception left fans divided—until the release of the Director's Cut, which many consider a redemption of the original vision. More about this film. DAREDEVIL (2003) – THE MAN WITHOUT FEAR HITS THE BIG SCREEN! Alright, true believers, strap in! In 2003, Hollywood took a blind leap of faith with Daredevil, bringing Marvel's roughest, toughest, most justice-obsessed street brawler to the big screen. Ben Affleck trades his Boston accent for a red leather suit as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer by day and a no-holds-barred vigilante by night. Fueled by a tragic origin (radioactive goo—because, comics!), Murdock develops super-heightened senses, letting him "see" the world in a way no one else can. But what's a hero without some serious trouble? Enter Elektra (Jennifer Garner), the lethal love interest with daddy issues, and Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan), the crime lord pulling all the strings. And just to make sure things get extra insane, we've got Colin Farrell chewing up the scenery as Bullseye, a psycho assassin who can turn a paperclip into a deadly weapon. Packed with rooftop acrobatics, bone-crunching fights, and a soundtrack straight out of your early-2000s Napster playlist, Daredevil was Marvel's attempt to go dark and gritty before The Dark Knight made it cool. While the theatrical cut took some heat, the Director's Cut added more grit, more lawyering, and—believe it or not—a better story. So, was Daredevil the next Spider-Man, or did it get blindsided by its own ambition? Either way, one thing's for sure: The Devil of Hell's Kitchen got his time in the spotlight, and fanboys will be debating its legacy for years to come! Those who brought us this film. When I'm Rome is a 2010 Romantic Comedy directed by Mark Steven Johnson. This is the story of Beth, a workaholic art curator who is disillusioned by love, played by Kristen Bell. When Beth's little sister Joan, played by Alexis Dziena, gets engaged (after 2 weeks) Beth flies to Italy for the wedding. There she meets Nick Beamon, the best man, played by Josh Duhamel. He is ONE of our love interests. The premise of our story today is brought on by Beth drunkenly wading her way INTO the fountain of love in Rome. It's a take on the Trevi Fountain. There in an act of defiance against love, she pulls 4 coins out of the fountain, unknowingly bringing upon her self a spell. The owners of those 4 coins have now fallen in love… with Beth. Which is a good time to tell you about our supporting cast of Will Arnett as a tortured artist. Jon Heder is a magician illusionist. Dax Shephard is our self absorbed male model. Danny DeVito plays the owner of a sausage company.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
*SEASON X PREMIERE* SIDE HUSTLES AND HYPHENAUTS #1: BEN AFFLECKCelebrities! They are just like us! Except when they get the urge to try something new, it isn't the new taco truck up the street, it's getting studios and money-men to invest millions of dollars in a movie they feel the urge to direct. This has resulted in many an actor finding second creative life as important directors - our podcast began in covering the greatest of this group, Clint Eastwood. Not all were as successful as Eastwood, creatively or box office-wise. These are the men and women we will be talking about all season long. We will talk one movie from their main gig, usually as actor, then pick a movie they directed. First up, alphabetically, anyway, is Ben Affleck. Described as a "geek" by Michael Bay, Affleck had an ascendent leading man career in the late 90s and early 00s. Almost better known for all of the famous ladies he dated, his film career had a classic record scratch in the early aughts that derailed him in the public eye and creatively for years. The nadir of this patch is, arguably, Daredevil (2003), Mark Steven Johnson's insanely wrong-headed and rock dumb superhero film that was PRODUCED BY KEVIN FEIGE (in case you thought this current MCU creative drought was unprecedented). Affleck met Jennifer Garner on it and they had three children together so, for them, this is a special movie. For the rest of us, maybe special in the urban dictionary sense of the word. Four years later Affleck directed GONE, BABY, GONE (2007), his first released film as director and, to this date, the only one he has directed in which he does not appear. Lead status is granted to his problematic brother Casey, who plays Dennis Lehane's angry, sarcastic PI Patrick Kenzie in an adaptation of the best known book of that series. A murderer's row is cast here and Affleck shows a true affinity for the people and places in Lehane's Boston. Affleck, and co-screenwriter Aaron Stockard, do an admirable job taking a typically expansive hardboiled detective plot and pare down the characters and the tangents, leaving a fairly lean and engrossing thriller. Affleck is better with actors than Affleck's previous directors were with actors and directs the movie's key set pieces and moral dilemmas as well as could be hoped for. Is this his best movie as director? He won an Oscar for a film whose main cultural impact is the phrase "Ar-go fuck yourself" so we may be on good standing if that's what it boils down to. Does it? Listen to the damn epsidoe and find out! It took a little while, but we're finally at the part of Ghost Rider with Ghost Rider! Yes, Nicolas Cage's skin has flaked off to reveal a cool skull on fire. Will acclaimed director Mark Steven Johnson make the movie become epic when the action starts? We've got three element-themed bad guys to deal with, so I hope we get to see some classic earth stuff! If not, I'm sure we'll at least have a super normal chat about a guy made of water! Sam | Val | Gigalithic Twitter

Luke and Jae take a ride back to 2007 to revisit this negatively reviewed box-office success of a film. Years ago, motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) sold his soul to save the life of a loved one. Now, he transforms into a fiery, avenging agent of justice at night wherever evil roams. As the only one who can walk in both worlds, Johnny is charged by Mephistopheles (Peter Fonda) himself to destroy Blackheart (Wes Bentley), a demon that wants to overthrow Mephistopheles and create a worse hell than the one that currently exists.

Mark Steven Johnson's GHOST RIDER (2007) sees daredevil stuntman - see what I did there because the same director also did the Ben Affleck superhero caper about a blind gimp lawyer called DAREDEVIL - Johnny Blaze make a Faustian pact with Mephistopheles which ends up in him becoming a flame-skulled bounty hunter. You know how those Faustian pacts can be. With steampunk Neo-clone villain Blackheart and his band of easily dispatched elemental douchebro's desperately seeking the maguffin which will ultimately undo him, it's the Nic Cage inspired adlibs and character details that elevate this B-movie with an A budget to something approaching watchability. Eva Mendes is window dressing, the writing is appalling, the central romantic relationship makes no sense, it frequently resembles a badly rendered PlayStation 3 game when the title character is on screen, Peter Fonda looks bored, the stakes are low or non-existent, there are plot holes galore and it commits one of the ultimate cinematic sins in that it's embarrassed by its premise. Yes, you would have to be a moron to enjoy this which coincidentally explains why we all did to some degree or another.

Nathan and Clint ride alone this week for two movies about going very fast - one for the kiddies, one for angsty Hot Topic teens! First up is Ghost Rider, Nic Cage's first foray into the world of Marvel's very own bike-riding Spirit of Vengeance. The good news? Cage is really fun, injecting no small amount of Elvis-y elan to the deeply weird Johnny Blaze. The bad news? It's written and directed by Daredevil's Mark Steven Johnson, so literally nothing else works -- from the mall-goth villains to the ropey CG to Eva Mendes getting nothing to do but stand around in tight clothing. Bleak! Luckily, we get a zipper, more complex kid's tale with Disney Animation Studios' first big hit, the Pixar-inflected Bolt, about a white lab (voiced by Travolta) who thinks he's a superhero, only to have to confront the horrors of the outside world. It's a cute, clever premise (what if The Incredibles was also The Truman Show?) elevated by sincere performances and some stunning animation that still holds up. Acomi and Turk182 turn off the lights and and play rain sounds in the background to set the mood for their viewing on Daredevil (2003), starring Ben Affleck. Directed by Mark Steven Johnson, the movie tells the story of blind lawyer turned late night vigilante, Matt Murdock. On a mission to rid the city of crime by brining down the one man who controls it all; the Kingpin. Considered by many to be one of the worst superhero movies ever created, Daredevil (2003) hit the screens at a time when superhero movies like Blade, the first Singer X-Men movie, and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man were showing what the franchise could do. Then, the incomparable Ben Affleck dons the red leather suit and sets the bar a little lower than expected. A favorite of Turk's for many non-Affleck reasons, join him and Acomi as they watch a comic book movie come to life. Acomi and Turk182, along the occasional special guest, provide running commentary of awfulsome movie and TV shows. The hosts select movies that either one, or both, have never seen. As an actor, one of the more difficult attitudes for me to manage is that of jealousy, and an elevated sense of competition for roles and even status in this industry. I've particularly noticed this as theater is opening up again after the long pandemic shutdown and other actors, not me, are back onstage again. My guest today, Peter Allen Vogt, is a talented actor in his own right but has struggled with this as well from time to time, especially considering he has a well-known identical twin who is also an actor and comedian. Sign up for the monthly WINMI Newsletter on the WINMI website - http://whyillnevermakeit.com I first got to know Peter Allen Vogt working for Disney. Both he and I worked at Tokyo Disney as well as the theme park in Orlando. He has since moved on to Universal out in Los Angeles, and he is also appeared in such TV shows as Hannah Montana, Parks and Recreation, and American Horror Story. But our first love is still theater. Whether it's classic shows or new musicals, Peter brings a larger than life quality to all of his roles. In fact, his size has been one of Peter‘s notable characteristics for many years. In our conversation today he shares his weight loss journey and what that has meant for his career. But first we talk about what keeps Peter going and the longevity of his career as well as the importance of surrounding yourself with those who support and nurture you as an artist. Final Five episode - https://youtu.be/HwiOlNZQVC0 Topics and people covered in this episode: Streetmosphere - street performers in the various Disney theme parks who don't have a theater or a home, but rather perform in the street for guests as they pass by. 1776 - a Broadway musical from 1969 with music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone, based on the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Grumpy Old Men - a new musical with book by Dan Remmes, music by Neil Berg, and lyrics by Nick Meglin (adapted from the Warner Bros. motion picture written by Mark Steven Johnson). Cathy Rigby - Olympic gymnast, theater actress and producer Glenn Casale - director, actor, and writer; former Artistic Director of Sacramento Music Circus Mark Jacoby - Broadway and TV/film actor Blake Hammond - stage and screen actor Ken Page - longtime musical theater performer on stage and screen Michael Kostroff - stage and screen actor who was a WINMI podcast guest back in Season One Actors' Co-Op Theater - began in 1987 with a dozen actors and operates two 99-seat Equity-approved theatres on the campus of First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood. It's our hometown series! Mr. Monopoly picked this film, and we visit Nova Scotia, Canada. Content Warning: we discuss outdated themes in the film that would not be acceptable by today's standards.
Sorry this is so late, friends! Blame the world! Maren and Martha take a look at a newish Netflix original, Love, Guaranteed (2020, dir. Mark Steven Johnson). It's nice to see Rachel Leigh Cook working! Maybe not in this so much, though. Warning: we do not say nearly as much about Cook's amazing wardrobe as we should have.

Acomi, the world's biggest Nicolas Cage fan, and Turk182, the world's biggest Nicolas Cage appreciator, sit down and watch the 2007 Ghost Rider movie. Directed by Mark Steven Johnson and starring Nicolas Cage. Entertaining, on certain levels, the movie is a WALL-E compacted cube of bad ideas, one liners, and first drafts. Great character design, and great acting talent, mixed with mediocre special effects. A lot that is held together with bad promises and good intentions. It's not the worse, but far from the best. #OMTWF #Acomi #Turk182 #GhostRider #GhostRidermovie #NicCage #JohnnyBlaze #BottomlessMirror Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. Ghost Rider is a 2007 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Mephistopheles sends his bounty hunter of the damned, the Ghost Rider, to retrieve the contract of San Venganza for control of a thousand corrupt souls. Seeing that the contract would give Mephistopheles the power to bring hell on Earth, the Rider refuses. In 1986, Mephistopheles reaches out to 17-year-old stunt motorcycle rider Johnny Blaze, offering to cure his father's cancer in exchange for Blaze's soul. The next morning, Blaze awakes to discover that his father's cancer is cured, but his father dies in a motorcycle stunt. Blaze accuses Mephistopheles of causing his father's death, but Mephistopheles considers their contract to be fulfilled and promises to one day see him again. Twenty-one years later, Blaze has become a famous stunt motorcycle rider. Blaze meets his lifelong sweetheart Roxanne Simpson, now a news reporter, whom he abandoned after his father's death. He convinces her to attend a dinner date. Meanwhile, Blackheart, the son of Mephistopheles, comes to Earth, along with three fallen angels who bonded with the elements air, earth, and water. They are tasked to find the lost contract of San Venganza. In response, Mephistopheles makes Blaze the new Ghost Rider and offers to return his soul if he defeats Blackheart, though Mephistopheles says he has no choice. Yep, you read all that right. The film was written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson, and stars Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze / Ghost Rider, with Eva Mendes, Wes Bentley, Sam Elliott, Donal Logue, Matt Long, and Peter Fonda in supporting roles.

The story of the United California Bank Robbery is one of the greatest stories never told. Back in 1972, the leader of a small group of safecrackers from Youngstown, Ohio got a tip from Jimmy Hoffa: President Nixon was hiding up to $30 million in dirty campaign funds in a bank in Laguna Niguel. Propelled by their hatred for Nixon, the gang travelled to California to rip off the President of The United States. "Finding Steve McQueen" is an unbelievable true story about one of the most daring bank jobs of all time. But at its heart it's a story about identity. Who we are versus who we want to be -- and what happens when those worlds collide. FINDING STEVE MCQUEEN features Travis Fimmel (“Vikings,” Warcraft: The Beginning, The Experiment), Rachael Taylor (Transformers, “Jessica Jones”, Shutter,) William Fichtner (“Mom,” Black Hawk Down, Crash, Armageddon) and Forest Whitaker (Black Panther, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Last King of Scotland). The film is directed by Mark Steven Johnson (Ghost Rider, Daredevil and Grumpy Old Men) is the true story behind "Finding Steve McQueen" one of those fascinating footnotes in American History that deserves to be told. And with a crooked president in the White House and a scandal looming...it's a story that has never been more relevant. Director Mark Steven Johnson (Grumpy Old Men) stops by to talk about his beguiling stranger-than-fiction tale of politically motivated larceny and the love of a true Hollywood icon. Mark Steven Johnson grew up as a huge fan of Saturday Night Live. Mesmerized by comedy, he thought he could make it as a writer from an early age. Eventually, Johnson found his voice from reading scripts and watching new films. Soon, he wrote ‘Grumpy Old Men,’ which brought a fresh voice to Hollywood as most people were unaware ice fishing even existed. As the writer-director made a transition from character films to Marvel movies, he noticed the theme of the underdog stood out in all of his work. As he writer, Johnson has credits for the ‘Grumpy Old Men’ series, ‘Simon Birch,’ ‘Daredevil,’ ‘Ghost Rider,’ and ‘Christopher Robin.’ In his newest film, he’s back in the director’s chair for ‘Finding Steve McQueen.’ The ironic true story heist film takes place in 1972. According to IMDB, “A gang of close-knit thieves from Youngstown, Ohio attempt to steal $30 million in illegal contributions and blackmail money from President Richard Nixon's secret fund.” In this interview, Johnson discusses the missing middle movie in today’s film world, the key to original characters, the importance of a backstory, the importance of character limitations, and why writing what you feel may be more important than writing what you know. In 2003 Fox still had the rights and a young Kevin Feige would lend his hand to producing a movie that many would like to forget- but should they be so quick to dismiss DAREDEVIL staring Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Colin Farrell, Micheal Clark Duncan, Jon Favreau and Joe Pantoliano, written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson.
